The Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, said in a statement that Alausa Police Division operatives on routine patrol spotted three men attempting to dispossess the rider his tricycle.

“Upon noticing the approaching police patrol van, the criminals took to their heels. The officers, undeterred and determined to prevent further harm, engaged in a hot pursuit,” Mr Hundeyin said.

He said the suspects abandoned a black bag while fleeing the scene. A search of the bag revealed a Beretta pistol, one live round of ammunition, a cutlass, a knife, and various charms.

The police stated that the tricyclist, who sustained machete injuries to the head and other parts of his body, was rushed to the Lagos State Emergency Centre where he is currently receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Owohunwa Jimoh, commended the swift response of the officers and reiterated the Command’s commitment to the safety of residents.

Mr Hundeyin urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activity to the nearest police station.

Last year, the police in the state announced the arrest of four suspects for allegedly stealing three tricycles belonging to a mobility company in Lagos.

According to Mr Hundeyin, the company’s secretary reported the case to the Ogudu Police Division. He stated that investigations led to the recovery of the stolen vehicles in Lagos, Ondo, and Ogun States.

“The first suspect was arrested in Ondo Town with the first tricycle. The second was arrested at Mile 12 in Lagos with the second tricycle.

The third and fourth suspects were apprehended at Idiroko, a boundary town between Lagos and Ogun States, with the third tricycle,” he said.

Mr Hundeyin added that the suspects will be arraigned upon the completion of the investigation.

LG Polls: Lagos electoral commission meets political parties, pledges impartiality

Eniola Ajose

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has assured political parties that it will ensure the credible conduct of the July 12 local government election.

LG Polls: Lagos electoral commission meets political parties, pledges impartiality

The commission’s chairman, Mobolanle Okikiolu-Ighile, gave the assurance during a meeting with representatives of registered political parties in Lagos on Tuesday.

LASIEC announced on Friday that July 12 would be the election date in 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs).

Ms Okikiolu-Ighile also pledged a level playing field for each political party before and during the election and sought their support for the exercise.

“Nobody among us is a card-carrying member of any political party. Let us be nice to ourselves. We are not your opponent; we are working for the betterment of this election.

“We are prepared, we are working, we have sworn an oath, and we are going to stick to the oath,” Ms Okikioly-Ighile said.

The LASIEC boss, while speaking on the election guidelines, encouraged political parties and aspirants to strictly follow the electoral timetable and the guidelines.

She said political parties must visit the LASIEC headquarters to obtain nomination forms, adding that they would pay administrative fees for processing the nomination of their respective candidates.

Ms Okikiolu-Ighile, however, stated that female candidates were to pay half of the administrative fees.

She said the details of the revenue code and agency code for the payment would be stated in the guidelines. Also, verification of candidates’ documents will take place at the commission’s headquarters.

The LASIEC boss said the election guidelines would be published on April 17, while campaigns and rallies would start on April 18 and end on July 9.

“Political parties are to submit details of their party agents between June 23 and June 28. The political parties are to give verifiable party secretariat addresses to the commission,” she added.

Meanwhile, Temilola Akinade, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) chairperson in Lagos State, has expressed displeasure over the council’s neglect by the new LASIEC board.

Ms Akinade said the commission erred in how it released the election notice without the contributions of IPAC and other critical stakeholders.

According to her, important issues remain unresolved as regards the appropriate interpretation of the Supreme Court’s pronouncements on LG autonomy and how that will impact the 37 LCDAs established by the state government.

Ayinde Olawale of the African Action Congress (AAC) said the party would not participate in any local government election recognising the 37 LCDAs in the state.

Dele Oladeji, the state chairman of the Accord Party, urged the new board to always carry political parties along in the process.

Other party leaders took turns to express displeasure over the revised LASIEC law empowering the agency to conduct executive elections into 57 LGs/LCDAs, without the knowledge of stakeholders.

They said many political parties had yet to access the new law, stating that such critical legislation should be in the public domain.

Responding, the LASIEC boss said she could not meet IPAC earlier due to the huge workload and the need to put things right.

She explained that the law requires the commission to meet with IPAC only before the release of guidelines.

“The commission regards and respects IPAC and political parties a lot. The issue of guidelines is why we called for this critical stakeholders meeting to have your input,” she said.

Representatives of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), National Rescue Movement (NRM), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord, Youth Party (YP) and Action Democratic Party (ADP) attended the meeting

Crude price crash: Petrol can drop below N400/litre — Refiners

Yomi Durojaye

Crude Oil Refinery Owners Association of Nigeria has said that the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) can drop below N400 per litre with the current crash in crude oil prices.

Crude price crash: Petrol can drop below N400/litre — Refiners

CORAN argued that there is no reason petrol should not be sold at NN350 per litre if crude prices eventually fall to $50 per barrel.

However, CORAN said petrol prices will continue to rise despite the crash in crude prices and the reduction in its landing cost.

CORAN feared that unless the Federal Government continues the naira-for-crude deal, the price of petrol will be on the rise even if the price of crude oil falls to $50 per barrel.

The PUNCH reports that oil prices plunged last week to $65 per barrel as the United States import tariffs and an unexpected OPEC+ supply hike erased $10 per barrel from global benchmarks.

The price had appreciated earlier when US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on any country that buys crude from Venezuela.

However, oil prices turned the corner as of Friday, with Brent falling to $65, the first time since 2021.

Police bust ‘yahoo school’ in Lagos, rescue 12-year-old trainee, others

The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered and dismantled an illegal internet fraud training facility, known as a “Yahoo School,” in the Iju area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Tuesday, stated that four principal suspects were arrested alongside six trainees.

According to him, among the trainees was an underaged boy identified as Minachi Udochukwu.

Hundeyin noted that preliminary investigations revealed that the principal suspects recruited the trainees from Anambra State, engaged them in internet fraud, and confiscated their earnings.

The other six suspects are their criminal trainees, all of whom were undergoing training in cybercrime and fraud: Okorie Henry, Otoh Chisom, 20; Okeke Kwufrochikwu, 26; Uchenna Obeji, 26; Minachi Udochukwu, 12; and Chinedu Ukachukwu, 23.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the principal suspects of the facility recruited their trainees from Anambra State, engaged them to commit internet fraud and other related crimes.

“The proceeds from their fraudulent activities were being confiscated by the principal suspects.”

While the command warned the owner of the facility to turn himself in at the State Criminal Investigation Department, it assured all that all suspects would be charged to court for prosecution upon the conclusion of the investigation into the case.

The statement further revealed that Ugochukwu had been provided with medical care after healing marks of injury believed to have been sustained during the training was found on his body

“In line with due process of the law, the underage suspect among them, Minachi Ugochukwu, 12 years old, with healing marks of injuries on his body allegedly inflicted on him by the main principal suspect to compel him into the commission of the criminal acts, is being given medical attention and kept in protective custody till his relatives are identified and reunited with him,” Hundeyin stated.

The command also warned parents and guardians to monitor the activities of their children and wards to prevent them from being exploited, lured, or compelled into falling into criminal activities.

It, however, called on members of the public who have fallen victim to the fraudulent activities of the criminal syndicate to come forward to the SCID, Yaba, with their complaints.

“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, also commends the police personnel involved in this operation for their dedication and professionalism that resulted in this success.

“The CP Jimoh assures all Lagosians that the Command remains resolute and committed to combating all forms of crimes and criminalities, including cybercrime tagged ‘yahoo,’ etc.

HEALTH: LASG MARKS ORAL HEALTH DAY WITH SCHOOL OUTREACH

 By Yomi Durojaye

… Distributes Oral Care Kits, Educates Pupils on Healthy Teeth

LASG MARKS ORAL HEALTH DAY WITH SCHOOL OUTREACH

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Health, has commemorated the 2025 World Oral Health Day with an impactful awareness campaign at Oregun Junior and Senior High Schools, Ikeja. The event, which focused on promoting oral hygiene among children, featured health education sessions, interactive demonstrations, and the distribution of oral care kits to pupils.

The theme of this year’s celebration, “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Mind,” underscores the link between oral health and overall well-being, particularly in children. The initiative aimed to equip students with knowledge and practical skills to maintain healthy teeth and gums, thereby preventing tooth decay and other dental issues.

Addressing the pupils, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. (Mrs.) Kemi Ogunyemi emphasised the importance of good oral hygiene in children’s mental and physical health. She highlighted that poor oral health can contribute to low self-esteem, anxiety, and dietary deficiencies, ultimately affecting a child’s development and academic performance.

"World Oral Health Day is a time to celebrate the benefits of a healthy mouth and raise global awareness on oral hygiene, especially among children," Dr. Ogunyemi stated. "Oral diseases can impact not only individuals but also communities and economies, making preventive care essential.”

She further stressed the connection between oral health and mental well-being, noting that children with tooth pain, discolouration, or swelling may suffer from social anxiety and embarrassment. Encouraging students to prioritize their dental hygiene.

In his remarks, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye urged the students to limit sugar consumption and adopt proper oral care habits. He warned against the dangers of excessive sweet intake, explaining that sugar residues stick to the teeth, creating a breeding ground for bacteria that leads to tooth decay.

"I know children love sweets, but you must understand that bacteria thrive on the sugar left in your mouth, leading to cavities and bad breath," he cautioned. "Good oral hygiene ensures fresh breath, healthy gums, and a confident smile. You don't want to be the child that others avoid because of mouth odour.”

Also speaking, the Director of Family Health and Nutrition, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Folashade Oludara, praised the collaborative efforts of government agencies and school authorities in promoting oral health. She encouraged pupils to share their newfound knowledge with their parents, siblings, and peers, reinforcing the importance of proper oral care.

The Principals of Oregun Junior and Senior High Schools, Mrs. Adesola Ajimuda and Mr. Olatunji Sunday Opeolu, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Ministry of Health for selecting their schools for the initiative. They emphasised that the lessons learned would have a ripple effect on families and communities, helping to instil lifelong healthy habits in children.

"When children learn good oral hygiene, they pass it on to their families. This programme is not just about today; it is about securing a healthier future for our students," Mrs Ajimuda remarked.

The event also featured live demonstrations of effective tooth-brushing techniques led by oral health experts. Pupils eagerly participated in the hands-on exercises, learning how to properly clean their teeth, gums, and tongue. Teachers were also trained to reinforce these habits in school.

To encourage active participation, pupils engaged in a quiz session on oral health, where winners received prizes and additional oral care materials. The initiative was designed to make learning about oral hygiene fun, interactive, and memorable for students.

As part of the commemoration, oral care kits containing toothbrushes, toothpaste, and informational materials were distributed to all pupils. Health officials urged them to commit to daily brushing, regular dental checkups, and reduced sugar intake to prevent oral diseases.

The 2025 World Oral Health Day celebration in Lagos demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving public health. With continued investment in awareness campaigns, school-based interventions, and preventive healthcare, Lagos is taking bold steps to ensure a future where every child enjoys a healthy, happy smile.

VIRAL VIDEO: PARENTS, ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BLAME UNCULTURED STUDENTS, BACK SANGO SENIOR SEC. SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

 Yomi Durojaye

The Parents Forum and Alumni Association of Sango Senior Secondary School,Agege; have blamed the attitude of some students for portraying the image of the school in bad light and backed the disciplined Principal, Mr Okunola Moruf.

In a recent viral video, some students were seen dancing to a music and chanting what some members of the public claimed  to be that of cultists.

The Viral Video threw the image of the school to mud and faulted the efforts of the School Principal, Okunola, popular called Officer Mufu.

The Principal was said to be hardworking, disciplined and leading by example.

According to the investigation carried out HOTNEWSNAIJA ONLINE, Officer  Mufu has been the engine driving the school to greatness considering how he has reposition the school.

In the words of one S.S 3 student, " Our Principal has been the symbol of hope to all of us. He encourages us to read and be good children.

" Through his personal efforts, he organizes Morning and Evening classes for us to learn more apart from our usual learning hours. He is God- sent to all the students. From 6:30am to 6 pm, Mondays to Saturday, he is a good leader and teacher.

On the same vein, Chief (Mrs) Duroshola Olajumoke , the Chairperson of Parents Forum of Sango Senior Secondary School, said the principal is a hardworking and disciplined man.

She said, " Mr Okunola (the principal) is a very hardworking principal and disciplinarian. He is highly respected and  doesn't take nonsense from any student. The ugly incident was a bad stain on his personality and good leadership.

"On that fateful day, I was also in the school as they had a Cultural Day. After the programme, S.S 3  students still had their examination on that day. We don't know how the issue of dancing occured. But we (parents) are on top of the situation and we won't stop in talking to our children.

"On behalf of all parents, I can say it anywhere that the principal is a good man in all ramifications. And we want the principal back to the school.

Meanwhile, one of the Old students of the School who had passed through "Officer Mufu", Mr Lawal Ibraheem Okanlawon said the incident was unfortunate. He described the school principal as a dutiful and hardworking teacher.

"What happened in the school was an eyesore to the personality of the Alumni and that of the principal. Because the principal is an administrator per excellence. He was once a teacher in that school, vice principal before being elevated to be the principal. I was sad about the incident and  all stakeholders are doing something already.

" The parents, teachers, government and other critical stakeholders are working to be engaging with the students, " he said.

While Ministry of Education and Education District are investigating the matter, the parents and community are routing for Officer Mufu to come back as the Principal of Sango Senior Secondary school, Agege.

How a Retired Soldier Asked us to kill his son — FCT CP, Tunji Disu

Eniola Ajose

A retired soldier once stormed into my office, demanding that we kill his son, a university student arrested for cultism. His rage was volcanic.

But the next day, he returned with food, asking after his son. When I joked, “So you don’t want us to kill him again?” his eyes revealed the truth: anger is often the flipside of helpless love.

📌 Years later, I met his son again—now educated, married, and changed. Not because he was jailed, but because his father eventually chose support over abandonment.

---

💬 Many parents bring their children to us, demanding we “discipline” them:

❌ “Detain him.”

❌ “Torture him.”

As if punishment alone can fix a broken path.

One father even begged us to keep his drug-addicted son in custody for weeks. But cells are not rehabilitation centres. If something went wrong, who would he blame? The police.

---

⚠️ The issue isn’t a lack of discipline—it’s a lack of presence. Parents now hand their duties to teachers, police, and social workers, but no institution can replace a parent’s guidance.

📢 If your child commits a crime, come to us—we will help. But don’t surrender your role as a parent.

🔹 We enforce laws, but we cannot replace love.

🔹 We investigate crimes, but we cannot teach values.

---

🚨 The police cannot replace your voice.

🚨 Our cells are not classrooms; handcuffs are not parenting tools.

💡 Our parents weren’t perfect, but they owned their role as first teachers. Today’s parents must do the same—not with harshness, but with wisdom and love.

✅ Be present. Listen. Correct. Love.

Tragic Incident: Lady Jumps into Lagos Lagoon, Dies

 Eniola Ajose

Lagos was thrown into shock on Thursday after a woman tragically jumped into the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge. Authorities confirmed her death following reports of the incident at approximately 4 PM.

Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, released a statement on the matter, confirming that the Marine Police responded swiftly to the emergency. The rescue team recovered the woman’s body near the UNILAG shore slipway, a location that has witnessed many significant events in the past.

Local medical officials at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) examined the victim and officially confirmed her death in the presence of officers from the Sabo Police Division. Her remains have since been transferred to the Yaba Infectious Disease Hospital mortuary for further procedures.

The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic event to determine the reasons behind her actions. Authorities have not disclosed the woman’s identity or any potential factors leading to the incident.

This unfortunate event reignites concerns over safety along major Lagos routes, particularly around bridges and waterfronts. Reports indicate that accidental drownings and suicide attempts have become a growing issue in the state, prompting calls for increased security measures and preventive interventions.

Experts and concerned citizens urge the government to implement stronger safety protocols around critical infrastructure to reduce such occurrences. The swift response from emergency teams in this case highlights the importance of rapid intervention and thorough investigations to prevent future tragedies.
