INEC Apologises Over Drunk Returning Officer

The INEC Electoral Officer in Bokkos Local Government of Plateau, Mr Salihu Adamu Musa, on Monday apologised over the “shameful” behaviour of a drunk Returning Officer deployed to the area.

According to The Guardian, Musa was being queried by APC Collation Officer in Pankshin, Mr Emmanuel Bok, who wanted to know why the returning officer deployed to the area was not the person declaring the results of elections for Bokkos.

Musa, in his explanation, told the party agents, observers and INEC officials that the Returning Officer, a university lecturer, was drunk on Sunday and was sacked when he could not perform his duty.

“The Returning Officer’s attitude was appalling; he was drunk and couldn’t do anything at all.

“I took over the job based on instructions from the INEC headquarters in Jos,” Musa explained.

Musa apologised to the election officials on behalf of the electoral body, and promised that the situation would not repeat itself.

Egbeyemi Debunks Fake Rumour Around Oshodi

The operatives of the Lagos State Task Force has debunked fake rumour circulating around the State particularly on social media that there is on-going civil unrest around Oshodi.

The Chairman of the Agency. CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi confirmed that there is no any civil unrest around Oshodi and other parts of the State as been rumoured.

The Chairman urged parents and guardians to closely monitor activities of their wards as anyone caught formenting any problem would be seriously dealt with in accordance with the law.

The United States Government website has published about 100 achievements of Buhari administration. They also urged Nigerians to consider the re-election of President Buhari. The website picked Buhari as the option for Nigeria in the next four years.

19-year-old Girl Kills Husband In Lagos

 
...Police to charge Suspect to court

The Lagos police command has arrested a 19-year-old girl identified as Mary Adeniyi for allegedly stabbing her husband to death.

Adeniyi who is nursing mother is said to have committed the crime on Friday afternoon and is currently being detained at the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Panti, Yaba.

It was gathered that the suspect and her husband Solomon Nduka, 30, had a scuffle over her alleged infidelity at their Shagamu Road, Ikorodu residence.

The deceased, it was gathered usually accused the suspect of cheating on him which led to a fight.

Adeniyi, said to have a four-month-old baby for her deceased husband, allegedly stabbed him on the neck region with a knife which prompted neighbours to rush him to a nearby hospital.

But on arrival at the unnamed hospital, doctors were said to have confirmed the victim dead and the police notified, Igberetvnews learnt.

Spokesman for the command Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) confirmed the arrest, adding that investigation was ongoing.

Oti said the suspect would be charged to court at the completion of investigation.

How Customs officer shoots civilian ‘friend’ dead while trying to extort European returnees

A Customs officer has killed a civilian, Godwin Onoja, while allegedly trying to extort N5,000 bribe from travellers coming from Europe on the Sagamu end of the Lagos-Ore-Benin Expressway.


It was gathered that the victim was shot during an altercation between the officers of the Federal Operations Unit of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ikeja, Lagos, and some travellers, who boarded an Iyare Motors’ passenger bus travelling to Benin City from Lagos on Sunday.

One of the passengers, Mr Oliver Joseph, who lives in France, said he and the other passengers in the bus arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, on Saturday evening.

According to him, whenever he and his co-travellers get into  Nigeria, they usually contract Iyare Motors to convey them to Benin from the Lagos airport.

Joseph stated that when they got to the Sagamu intersection of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, some Customs officials asked the driver to stop.


He stated, “The driver stopped and asked them what the matter was. The driver told them that the bus belonged to Iyare Motors and it was pointless to ask him to stop. Immediately the driver parked, one of the officers came and asked who owned the luggage. The driver told him that the luggage belonged to the passengers. The customs officer asked us where we were coming from and we told him that we were coming from overseas and that we were here on a visit.


“He said he had interest in the luggage and needed to check them one by one. We told him that they had been checked at the airport. He replied that he must carry out his job and ordered us to alight from the bus. One of them then called the driver and asked him to give them N5,000 for them to allow us to go. We heard the driver saying that he did not have the money and that we did not have anything illegal. The driver then told us that the Customs officers demanded N5,000 from us.


“We eventually agreed that our luggage be searched and one of us insisted that he would record it so that they won’t place contraband in our bags. So, the guy brought out his iPhone 6, but one of the officers demanded to have the phone but the passenger refused, saying that the price of the phone could pay his salary.


“The officer just took some steps back, cocked his gun and fired. Immediately he fired, a man fell down. Before we knew it, one of the two Customs officers in green sweater ran into the bush, leaving the others. We were 10 passengers in the bus and when we took a headcount, we were complete. There was blood all over the victim’s face, so we could not recognise him.

“The officer tried to run away, but we held him by the uniform insisting that he had to follow us to the nearest police station.”


The manager of Iyare Motors, Benin City, Mr Aghimien Osahon, thanked God that none of the passengers lost their lives in the process.


He explained that the Customs officers were angered by the driver’s refusal to give them N5,000, adding that he did not know why they behaved the way they did.


“It was one of their men that they mistakenly shot dead and not any of our passengers. The officer, who fired the gun, wanted to shoot one of the passengers; as he cocked the gun, he opened fire on one of his men in mufti. We give God the glory,” Osahon added.

Cult war: 50 vehicles, shops vandalised in Lagos

A cult war in the Oworoshoki area of Lagos state has left fifty vehicles damaged and

 several shops looted on Sunday.

It was gathered that the fight,, which started around 2am and lasted till 7am, affected 

Ayo Odugbesan, Church, Oke Eri, Odo Eran and Aralamo streets, among others areas.

Residents revealed that there were  shouting “kill them all, kill anyone you see,” 

with accompanying sounds of sporadic gunshots/

According to an eyewitnesses, they saw the  street urchins around 7pm on

 Saturday and alerted the police.

“At about 7pm, we saw those boys trooping to our area. Some people fled 

because some of those boys were arrested recently and sent to jail.

 How they regained freedom and found their way back is surprising.

“We are not safe in Oworo. These cultists are making life unbearable for us.

 We need help in this area. The destruction started around 2am.

“No death was recorded. It seems their target was to kill the night guard, but he escaped.

“They shot non-stop, smashing vehicles. They were just destroying things

. It was around 5am that people came out and saw the massive destruction

. They were moving from street to street, vandalising vehicles,” he added.

Confirming the incident, Lagos police spokesman, Chike Oti, 

said 20 persons have been arrested.

“Commissioner Zubairu Muazu has deployed additional security, including 

operatives of counter-terrorism and anti-cultism units in the area. Investigation is on. 

Twenty suspects have been arrested. As I speak with you, there is increased 

security presence in the area. No one died and no one sustained injury.

Yes, vehicles were vandalised,” he added.

Lagos RRS Arrests Robbers Terrorising College Road, Fagba, Abbattoir Agege

Operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS), a unit of Lagos State Police Command said it arrested seven robbers believed to have been terrorising College Road, Fagba, and Abbattoir areas of Agege in the state.

The robbers were arrested on Valentine’s day at about 9:00 p.m at College Road, Ifako – Ijaiye area of Lagos, after the gang had robbed more than five passers-by of their valuables with knives and other harmful objects.

The suspects are Lekan Akinyemi (23), Chimeze Ofulie( 18), Babangida Abdullahi (22), Abubakar Umaru (30), Samuel Oyinloye (24), Timileyin Oladipupo (27) and Habeeb Olayinka.

All the suspects said they came from different parts of the country but reside in Abattoir, Agege, Lagos.

The suspects had on Thursday, robbed Agafe Augustine after he alighted from a taxi at College Road, Ifako Ijaiye.

Amongst the items collected from him by the gang were; an android phone, N14,000 and a handbag.

According to Agafe, “I allowed them to rob me because they were many and were holding dangerous objects but I trailed them to an open place before raising alarm. This drew the attention of some RRS officers on patrol in the area and they arrested some of them”.

He added “ they equally robbed some other victims amongst whom were a lady in company of her boyfriend. They dispossessed them of their phones and stabbed her boyfriend who refused to let go of his mobile phone after parting with his wallet”.

In his confessional statement to the crime, one of the suspects said they specialise in robbing passers-by at night collecting their mobile phones, bags, jewelry and wallets.

Investigation by the police revealed that one of the suspects, Timileyin Oladipupo popularly known as ‘Timi Yahoo’, specialised in working on SIM cards of the stolen phones to determine which ones are internet banking enabled to facilitate the gang access to transfering money from victims’ accounts.

The suspect disclosed “I have worked on so many SIM cards given to me by Lekan and other groups in Agege Abbatior and what I do is to further increase our gain from the robbery by transfering victim’s money from their bank accounts after using some softwares to determine how much are lodged inside their accounts and we also share the proceeds”.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police Mu’azu Zubairu, who ordered the arrest of all the gang members, added that they will be transferred to SARS for a thorough investigation.

He added that the gang will be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed.

Why INEC Postponed General Elections By One Week - Prof. Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed this year’s general elections by one week.

The chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who cited logistics  and operational glitches for the shift, told newsmen at the commission’s headquarters after about six hours marathon meeting with the National Commissioners, that “this is inevitable.”

Consequently, the commission has decided to reschedule the Presidential and National Assembly Elections to Saturday, 23ed February 2019.

“Furthermore, the Governorship, State House of Assembly and FCT Area Council election is rescheduled to Saturday, 9th March 2019.

“This will afford the commission the opportunity to address identified challenges in order to maintain the quality of our elections,” Prof. Yakubu said.

He said it was a difficult decision for the commission to take, but necessary for the successful delivery of the elections and the consolidation of the nation’s democracy.

He added that the commission will meet key stakeholders to update them on this development today at 2pm at the Abuja International Conference Centre (ICC).

In a bid to ensure that teachers make quality use of the usual mid-term break, the Principal of Government Junior College, Agege, Mrs. Alamu Bolanle Olusola has introduced the first of its kind welfare initiative for teachers in the school.

The school,which is under the umbrella of Lagos Education District One, Agege,  a district known for attaining many great feats when it comes to creativity in teaching and learning, added flair to the second mid-term break of the 2018/2019 academic session.

It is a popular knowledge that most school teachers always spend their mid-term break at home, and mainly occupied with abandoned house hold chores.She also said when you are doing a particular job in the  same way for some time, it will be one a routine and one might lose interest.

However, to change the mundane and to unleash their passion, Mrs Alamu organized a motivational excursion cum get-together for the relaxation of teachers under her watch and also for further exposure stating that their is no nation that can develop beyond the level of its teachers.This time, the teachers spent a part of the second term mid-term break outside the normal routine by going out on an excursion, visiting some heritage endowment sites across Lagos amidst lots of merriment. They visited the amazing Nduibusi Park in Lagos where the teachers were treated to delightful pleasure,they concluded the event at the Ikeja City Mall, ShopSite.

According to Mrs Alamu, the maiden excursion cum special welfare package for teachers in the school is to creatively change the mundane relaxation style of the teachers who spend their mid-term breaks mostly indoors. As we are in the era of creativity and innovative reforms in education, I thought of the best way to sustain the momentum that our teachers have been working on since the beginning of the term. Therefore, I came up with this Mid-term Excursion/Special Welfare Initiative.’

“The idea is to make our teachers come together during the short break to have fun that is tailored towards energizing them for the concluding part of the term. We believe this will bring out the best from our teachers and reflect in the outstanding  performance of students at the end of the term and ultimately at the end of the session.

“By the grace of God, this initiative will be an annual event as we desire to motivate and expose our teachers to many interesting educational stuffs that would consequently improve teaching and learning outcomes in class.” She concluded.

Mrs Alamu recognized efforts of the award winning and quintessential Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of EDD1 Dr. Yinka Ayandele, who has always encouraged school managers to be more creative in order to make teaching and learning interesting.

The Chieftaincy Council of Hausa Community, Agege - Lagos State and the entire good people of Agege has announced the death of one of the elders, Father, Brother and mentor High Chief Alhaji Kabiru Ali Dinar (Dallatun Agege/Hakimin Arewa).

Alhaji Kabiru passed away yesterday 13th of February 2019 after a brief illness. He will be buried today Thursday 14th of February 2019 according to Islamic rites at the Hausa Community Burial Ground, Junaidu Street off Moricass Road - Agege by 10:00 am and the Jana’iza Prayer will be conducted at Harisiyya Mosque, Abimbola Street, Moricass, Agege by 9:30 am.

He survived by Wife, Children and grand Children.

Breaking: Polytechnic union, ASUP suspends two-month-old strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), on Tuesday, suspended the industrial action it started in December 12th, 2018.

ASUP President, Usman Dutse announced the strike suspension at a press briefing in Abuja.

Dutse said that within the life span of the strike, several meetings were held between the union and government’s representatives concerning non-implementation of the 2017 Memorandum of Settlement/Action signed with the government after the November, 2017 strike.

He said that the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union, after exhaustive deliberations and due consultations with the respective congress across the nation “resolved to suspend the industrial action on the conditions that government commits to a reviewed memorandum of Action to solidify the resolutions and ensure its full implementation, failing which the union shall resume the action at its discretion.”

Some of the issues, according to him, included salary shortfalls, promotion arrears and payment allowances, NEEDS Assessment, victimization of union officers, passage of the amendment bill of the polytechnics among others.

APC vows to punish Governor Amosun over Ogun presidential rally violence

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has promised to take punitive measures against sponsors of Ogun presidential rally violence after the elections.

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu said, in a statement today, that the party regretted Monday’s alleged premeditated attacks purportedly sponsored by Governor Ibikunle Amosun on President Muhammadu Buhari and other senior party leaders at the venue of the presidential campaign rally in Ogun State.


Issa-Onilu, who said the party would review what he called ‘gross misconduct’, added that party supremacy and discipline were not matters of choice but binding principles which must be adhered to by all party members.
The APC spokesman, who urged party supporters and members not to be disturbed by Monday’s condemnable incident, implored all to continue trooping out enmasse for the remaining campaigns and vote massively for only APC candidates in the forthcoming general elections.



“This is one act of indiscipline too many. The APC will not condone acts of indiscipline, indiscretion and anti-party activities from any party member no matter how highly placed.

“The party will review this gross misconduct of deliberately positioning thugs to attack and embarrass the President and the party’s leadership. The party will take a decision on this matter immediately after the elections,” the statement read in part.

The governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Babatunde Gbadamosi, popularly called BOG has proffered what he called "practicable solutions" to many challenges facing Lagos and Lagosian.


Gbadamosi received a standing ovation after speaking eloquently at the just concluded Today's Community Newspaper Interactive Session for governorship aspirants and other politicians seeking elective posts in Lagos State.

Gbadamosi highlighted several challenges facing Lagosians while speaking to newsmen at the community media Parley  in Ilupeju, Lagos. He went on to proffer feasible solutions to tackle them systematically.

BOG revealed that every Lagosian faces a lot and expends too much of money on travel time because of gridlocks across the state. He mentioned key areas where Lagosians spend their hard earned money ranging from high schools fees, poor power supply which leads to incurring other expenses such as fueling and other source of alternative power supply adding that if all of these are settled by government, life will be more easier for people.

GbadamosI assured that in his first hundred days in office if elected, he would try increasing the salaries of civil servants in the state, but he did not explain how he would raise the additional fund needed to do this.

He, however, bounced back from the initial flutter, arguing that his priority will be to immediately fixed the roads and boost the infrastructural shortfall of the state by building rail lines to all the exit points of the state, opening up water transportation and the movement of containers by barges instead of contesting the roads with trailers.

The ADP candidate, who berated the ruling party in the state for lack of prudence in running the state finances, said he would bring his experience from the private sector to handle the spending of state fund.

According to him, he would be able to do this because he does not have any godfather, which was a snide remark on the candidate of the ruling APC, Mr Sanwo-Olu, who enjoys the backing of a former governor of the state, Bola Tinubu, generally believed to be the de-facto political leader of the state.

Mr Gbadamosi pointed out that the state budget website no longer exists stating that the APC led government is known for being opaque rather than open. He said if elected into office, he would operate an open government.

He berated the current government for being unable to complete its light rail project in 10 years and wondered why the state was paying for it from its purse when it could have welcomed the private sector to finance the project. He also said at a cost of almost $1 billion, the light rail project was too expensive.

He said he would open up the state waterways and improve tourism as a means of growing the state's tax revenue if elected into office.


He hailed community media practitioners in the state as viable platforms through which government activities are spread to the grassroots. He promised to make community media major part of his government if elected.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Saturday assured President Muhammadu Buhari that residents in Lagos would troop out enmasse on February 16 and deliver the State to him and other National Assembly candidates of the All Progressive Congress (APC).



Governor Ambode, who spoke at the APC Presidential Mega Rally, held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, said the President in the last three and half years fully supported the infrastructural growth in the State and would do more if given another mandate of four years.



According to him, the February 16 election was not about tribe or religion, but strictly about job creation, infrastructural development and economic growth, saying that President Buhari has shown total commitment to making life comfortable for residents.



"In and outside of the stadium, you can see the crowd that has turned out here and we are very grateful that Lagos has been signed, sealed and delivered to APC already. The message is very clear.



"We appreciate Mr. President for his support to our State in the last three and half years. The achievements that we have recorded in Lagos were possible because of his support. This election is not about tribe or religion, it's about infrastructure, jobs and the economy and the right path to go is to go to the APC.



"if you see what we are going in Lagos already, you will see that the Airport road is not for the Yorubas or the Igbos or the Hausas, its about making life comfortable for Nigerians and that is why Mr. President has continually supported all our projects by even refunding some of the funds we used for capital projects so that we can complete more projects," Governor Ambode said.



He said it was important for Nigerians to entrust President Buhari with another four years in office to continue in the trajectory of growth, warning that the return of the opposition party would do nothing but alter the progress made by the Federal Government so far.



"If you remember, the first two years of this administration we were in recession caused by the PDP, but in the last two years, we have stabilized, we have created the groundwork for growth and that is where APC is different from the PDP. They will tell you that they want to make Nigeria work again, but ask them who destroyed Nigeria in the first place?



"Therefore, this election is about moving the economy forward and for this to be possible, we need to continue on the foundation that we have already made in the last four years. APC remains one party, we remain one nation and one family," the Governor said.



Buhari, who made his entrance into the venue of the rally at about 2:45pm to a tumultuous welcome by the teeming crowd and party faithful, assured that Lagos as commercial capital of Nigeria would continue to receive greater attention in terms of infrastructural renewal and all round economic growth.



Speaking earlier at a session with members of the Organised Private Sector held at Lagos House, Marina, President Buhari said it was gratifying to note that the economic policies of his administration were already making the desired impact as evidenced by steady growth in the economy in the last three years.



He said the APC government had kept the promise to boost the economy through blocking leakages in government finances, increasing capital expenditure and inflows, and implementing the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), among others.



“I firmly believe that our economic policies are beginning to make the desired impact. Economic growth has resumed and is continuing to improve. Growth was higher in 2017 than in 2016, data even from external sources shows that it was also higher in 2018 than in 2017. I am confident that as we stay the course, it will be better still at the end of 2019.



“Inflation is coming down steadily, there is stability in the exchange rate and foreign exchange is readily available for genuine business. Foreign reserves are adequate and growing; capital inflows have increased and the trade balance is positive.



“We are paying off debts that were not even publicly acknowledged before now, including those owed to States, the electricity sector, oil marketers, exporters, backlog of salaries of workers and pensioners, amongst others,’’ he said.

Among the organizations which made presentations to the President at the session were Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), and Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME).



Aside Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Governors of Oyo (Abiola Ajimobi), Kebbi (Atiku Bagudu), Kano (Abdullahi Ganduje), Osun (Gboyega Oyetola), Ekiti (Kayode Fayemi) and Ministers, the session was also attended by many captains of industry including Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Femi Otedola, Oba Otudeko, Jim Ovia, Bismarck Rewane, Chief (Mrs) Nike Akande, among others.



The rally was well attended by the who's who in the APC including the Governors of Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Edo, Kano, Kebbi, National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Mr. Babatunde Fashola, other serving and past Ministers, party chieftains, among many others.

Buhari Arrives Lagos For APC Presidential Campaign

President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived Lagos for his presidential campaign ahead of next Saturday’s election.

Buhari and his entourage landed at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos at around 10.15 am.



The President arrived aboard a Nigerian Air Force Boeing aircraft with registration number 5N-FGT to a rousing welcome by All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains and supporters

He was received at the Presidential lounge by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, ministers and other senior government officials.
