She described Lagos as a vibrant melting pot of cultures, histories, and traditions, noting that the Lagos Fanti Carnival remains one of the State’s most iconic cultural celebrations.

According to her, the carnival is a powerful reflection of Lagos’ Afro-Brazilian heritage and its enduring historical ties with Atlantic communities.

“The Fanti Carnival is more than just a festival; it is a living narrative, an expression of identity, resilience, and community. Through colourful costumes, rhythmic music, captivating dances, and theatrical displays, it brings history to life while connecting generations through shared cultural experiences.” Commissioner disclosed

She said that the 2026 Lagos Fanti Carnival will take place on Monday, April 6, 2026, at the historic Tafawa Balewa Square, which will once again serve as a grand stage for cultural expression, attracting residents, tourists, and culture enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond.

She emphasised the economic significance of the festival to the economy of the State and how it will boost sales, noting that tourism plays a critical role in enhancing and building local communities while driving commercial activities across the State.

Referencing the recent hosting of the  Eyo Festival, she highlighted how such cultural events have consistently stimulated economic activity and boosted Lagos’ visibility on the global stage.

“As a Ministry, we remain resolute in leveraging cultural tourism as a strategic driver for economic growth, social cohesion, and global visibility for Lagos State,” she added. “Events like the Fanti Carnival stimulate local enterprise, empower creatives, and reinforce Lagos’ position as Africa’s leading destination for arts and culture.”

Highlighting the State’s forward-looking approach, Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka added that efforts are ongoing to reimagine cultural heritage in ways that resonate with younger generations while preserving authenticity. She noted that the carnival continues to evolve by blending tradition with innovation, ensuring its vibrancy and global relevance.

The Commissioner expressed appreciation to partners, sponsors, and stakeholders for their unwavering support in sustaining and expanding the State’s cultural ecosystem.

She also called on members of the media to continue amplifying Lagos’ cultural narratives to a global audience.

Giving insights into the Afro-Brazilian roots of the carnival, the General Secretary of the Brazilian Descendants Association, Mr. Remi Da Costa, highlighted the historical significance of the festival, tracing its origins to the 19th-century return of formerly enslaved Brazilians to Lagos.

He noted that these returnees introduced vibrant cultural elements, including elaborate costumes, mascots, and performance traditions that have evolved into what is now celebrated as the Fanti Carnival.

He further emphasised that the carnival represents only one aspect of a broader Afro-Brazilian heritage, which also includes distinctive cuisine and architectural styles found across Lagos Island.

According to him, the carnival remains a vital platform for preserving and showcasing this unique cultural identity.

He disclosed that the carnival’s 130-year heritage and cultural connection between Lagos and Brazil, is rooted in the Portuguese word “Fantasia”, meaning fantasy.

Also speaking, the Project Manager of the Lagos Fanti Carnival, Bolaji Animashaun, commended the Lagos State Government for its consistent support, as well as the collaboration with various Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and federal institutions.

She revealed that this year’s edition will feature special highlights, including award presentations for the Best Dressed and Best Performing Community, celebrating creativity and community participation.

The 2026 edition will spotlight key elements such as the 19th-century cultural rebirth of Afro-Brazilian traditions in Lagos, the evolution of Fanti costume artistry, the prominence of neighbourhood troupes, and the dynamic development of brass band performances that define the carnival’s unique rhythm and spectacle.

“This year, we’re expecting over 40,000 people; LAWMA is tasked with making sure that our waste is recyclable; the ambulance service, always ready to make sure that everyone is safe and hydrated,” she said.

Animashaun said the Nigerian Police, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Lagos Waste Management Authority, Lagos State Ambulance Service, Fire Service, Safety Commission and other agencies had been actively involved in planning to ensure safety, traffic control, waste management and emergency response.

She also acknowledged support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Lagos State Printing Corporation, and other government partners, noting that their collaboration would ensure effective coordination and community participation.

In her remarks, Chief Executive Officer of the National Arts Theatre, Tola Akerele, described the carnival as an important cultural and tourism platform that promotes national identity and community bonding.

Akerele said that the carnival showcases Nigeria’s creative strength and encourages global participation in local cultural experiences.

She praised the organisers and community for their hard work on costume design, music, food, and performance, noting that it took dedication and commitment.

The carnival started among three communities on Lagos Island and has grown to include other neighbourhood troupes.

Seven troupes, including the Isale-Eko Woro Carnival Association, Brazilian Campos Carreta Carnival Association, and Okoo-Faji Carnival Association, will showcase their heritage in this year’s carnival.

Others are: Lafiaji Fanti Association, Epetedo United Youth Movement, Olowogbowo Fancy Carnival Association, and Okepopo Fanti Carnival Association.

The carnival will feature elaborate floats, Afro-Brazilian cultural displays, samba-influenced highlife brass music, traditional Yoruba design elements and culinary exhibitions reflecting shared Lagos-Brazil food heritage.

The event will also be accompanied by the Afro-Brazilian Economic and Cultural Exchange Summit aimed at strengthening cultural tourism, investment partnerships, and long-term collaboration between Nigeria and Brazil.

The 2026 Lagos Fanti Carnival would build on previous successes by expanding community participation, boosting tourism visibility and creating more opportunities for local businesses and young creatives in Lagos.

Lagosians Lament Excesses of State Police Taskforce, Writes Gov. Sanwo-Olu

 Eniola Jacobs

Dear Governor  Babajide Sanwo-Olu Lagos State task force arresting bike riders on the road needs reform, and the civilian touts working with them should be banned.

The Lagos State Taskforce  chairman and police officers are operating independently for their own gain rather than on behalf of the Lagos State government.

The majority of the bikes they are arresting are being sold off for themselves, with a 150,000&200,000 naira bail collected for some, and the few that are not functioning properly left at their office!

On 14 of january 2026, I was in a car with a friend at Dopemu under bridge along santous Lagos, around 9:25 pm.

I wanted to buy fruit 🍎, when I saw four boys running after two bikes.

They pushed the bike man while he was moving, wounded him with a weapon, and tear-gassed him!  I couldn’t take it and questioned him about why he did this. Did he want to kill someone?

He’s not even a police officer but they called them AJA Taskforce ( Taskfoce Dog 🐕 ) all of them are criminals, he came to me and other boys came directly to me and started talking.

Before I knew it, one of them removed a tear gas canister and pushed it towards my face, but I blocked it. A colleague who was also inside the car came out and challenged them before they left with two bikes last night

I asked the riders what was going to happen now, and they said the bikes were gone because they couldn’t be traced, as they had been purchased on installment payments.😢

The Lagos State Government needs to ban civilian touts working with the Lagos state task force and the task force also needs to be reformed.

The Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo, is  making a lot of money for himself through the selling and bailing of bikes they claim to have arrested!

Yomi Durojaye

The Lagos State Government is set to host the ninth edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) to enhance the growth of the music ecosystem in Nigeria and across Africa.

M: HC, Toke-Benson, L: President,  AFRIMA, Mike Dada and Co-Producer, Olisa

A week long AFRIMA will run from January 7 to January 11, with activities spread across Lagos. The programme includes AFRIMA Music Business Summit, which will hold on Thursday, AFRIMA Music Village concert featuring African superstars performing and show-stopping performances from Africa’s biggest stars at Ikeja City Mall and the award ceremony, scheduled to hold at the prestigious Eko Hotels and Suites on Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, on Wednesday to herald the AFRIMA Awards, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, declared that the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration will continue to support the creative industry by strengthening the ecosystem.

Benson-Awoyinka said Lagos remains Africa's cultural and creative capital, hence its stance to encourage cross-cultural collaboration and position music and culture as drivers of development.

Speaking on the significance of AFRIMA, Lagos State’s role as host, and the broader cultural and economic value of the continental event to the creative industry and the State at large, Benson-Awoyinka said Lagos State is proud to continue its support for initiatives that elevate African talent and position culture as a driver of development.

The Commissioner said the All Africa Music Awards has, over the years, grown into one of the most influential platforms for recognising African musical excellence, fostering cross-cultural collaboration, and promoting Africa’s creative economy on the global stage.

She said: "On behalf of the Government and people of Lagos State, I wish to acknowledge and appreciate our strategic partners, particularly the British High Commission, for their sustained collaboration and commitment to cultural exchange and creative diplomacy.

"This type of partnership reinforces our shared vision of using arts and culture as tools for international engagement, innovation, and economic growth.

"This edition of AFRIMA will bring together artists, producers, industry leaders, policymakers, and creative entrepreneurs from across Africa and beyond. It will also underscore the growing relevance of the creative sector as a contributor to employment, tourism, youth empowerment, and global visibility for Africa.

"I want to use this medium to congratulate all the nominees and participants for this award. Your creativity, discipline, and impact continue to showcase Africa’s strength, diversity, and global competitiveness in the creative space. AFRIMA remains a platform that not only celebrates excellence but also amplifies African voices and stories to the world."

Benson-Awoyinka stressed further that, "Lagos State remains Africa’s cultural and creative capital. Through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, we are committed to creating an enabling environment that supports creativity, encourages investment, and positions Lagos as a hub for arts, entertainment, and cultural tourism.

"As the programme of events unfolds, we look forward to constructive media engagement, positive coverage, and continued collaboration with stakeholders to ensure a successful and impactful AFRIMA 2026."

Also speaking, the President and Executive Producer of AFRIMA, Mr Mike Dada, said Lagos emerged as the host city after extensive deliberations by the African Union and key stakeholders, in recognition of the state’s capacity, infrastructure and cultural influence.

He said the event, in partnership with the African Union, supports key developmental frameworks, including Agenda 2063, projecting cultural heritage.

Dada explained that beyond music awards, AFRIMA was designed as a platform for peace-building, continental integration and youth empowerment.

"All over the world they are listening to our music, but is the money coming home? Is the government of Nigeria getting taxes from those revenues? Those are the issues we are discussing. Or are the governments of African countries getting the right taxes? Because those taxes and revenues are not coming to Africa. So those are the things we discuss,” Dada added

Also, the co-producer of AFRIMA, Mr Olisa Adibua, commended the Lagos State Government for its consistent and practical support for the creative economy.

“From the beginning, Lagos State understood what we are trying to do. They don’t just talk about supporting the creative economy; they actually do it,” he said.

He also urged residents and visitors to participate fully in the week-long celebrations, noting that AFRIMA would significantly boost tourism and the local economy. He stated that about 6,000 free tickets would be made available through the Lagos State Government to enable young people to attend the AFRIMA Music Village concert.

Over 16 artists, 277 crew members and 130 stakeholders are expected at the weeklong musical event, which will climax with an award ceremony on Sunday on Lagos Island

President Tinubu Particiates In Historic Eyo Festival In Lagos

Yomi Durojaye

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday attended the Grand Finale of the week-long 2025 Eyo Festival, in a white robe, a damask sash slung over his shoulder, and a distinctive hat emblazoned with bold, decorative stars. Like other revellers, the President also carried a long staff called an opambata.

The colourful event, held at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, began with paying homage and presenting the festival staff to the President at his Lagos residence on Sunday, December 21.

The Eyo Festival, which dates back to 1854, was held this year for the first time in eight years. The 2025 edition honoured four distinguished Lagos personalities, a departure from the usual practice of celebrating one or three individuals. The honourees are: the first military administrator of Lagos State, Mobolaji Johnson; the first civilian governor, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande; a former civilian governor, Sir Michael Otedola; and a former Iyaloja and mother of the current President, Alhaja Abibat Mogaji.

The carnival showcases the deep cultural history and heritage of Lagos, with various Yoruba families participating in regalia, dance, unity, and peace.

President Tinubu, in a message sent to the organisers, described the carnival as "a great rekindling of our culture".

"The Eyo Festival is a vibrant expression of the rich traditions of Lagos. It celebrates the achievements, outstanding contributions, and exemplary lives of distinguished Nigerians—not only eminent Lagosians.

.

He added that all the honorees deserved the recognition. "They were leaders and builders whose visionary leadership, influence, and diligence in public service helped nurture Lagos State to both national and international prominence".

The President also noted the festival's timing, which coincides with Detty December, a period when Lagos welcomes thousands of Nigerians from the diaspora and foreign visitors.

"It is a reminder that our culture and traditions hold great tourism potential. Indeed, our cultural assets can serve as valuable resources for destination promotion. The glamour of white-robed figures parading our streets in celebration of distinguished Lagosians sends a resounding message about our identity and our country".

President Tinubu encouraged all revellers to celebrate peacefully and ensure the safety of all participants.

In his welcome address, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, described the event as not only historic for the President but also a homecoming.

"What we're celebrating here today is the first of its kind. As our son, our father, we are seated with the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to witness a history of the cultural heritage of Lagos.

"Mr President, it is not just a coincidence; it is history in your lifetime that is being put in place today.

"We honour you, give God the glory for your life, and we are indeed excited that God Almighty can bring you and most of your people to come and celebrate the best of the cultural heritage of Lagos," he said.

Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the traditional institutions under the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, for their exemplary leadership in reviving the festival.

"Today, we gather on this historic ground at the Tafawa Balewa Square, wrapped in the timeless majesty of the Eyo Festival, the sacred Adamu Orisha Play.

“After an eight-year interval, this revered tradition returns to Lagos in full splendour, standing as a powerful affirmation of our identity, our resilience, and unbroken connection to our history.

"The Eyo Festival is far more than a pageantry. It is a living archive of our Yoruba heritage and a symbol of unity, a symbol of purity and the communal strength of Lagos.”

The governor assured his audience that his administration will continue to advance the state's socio-economic trajectory without abandoning its cultural roots. He said his administration will maximise the festival's potential as it projects Lagos onto the global stage.

Dignitaries at the celebration included the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma; Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; members of the diplomatic corps; and senior officials of the federal and Lagos State governments, among others.

The event, featuring cultural performances, traditional dances, indigenous music and chants, and a procession of Eyo groups, concluded with special prayers for the President and the country.

Lagos Slashes Taxes from 65 to 9 by 2026, Scraps Bike, Truck, Canoe Levies

 Yomi Durojaye

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce new levies covering bicycles, wheelbarrows, canoes, carts, trucks and several other activities as part of a sweeping tax reform scheduled to take effect in 2026.

The move comes under newly proposed tax laws aimed at simplifying revenue collection and ending the long-standing problem of multiple and overlapping taxes across the state.

The proposal was unveiled by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Taxation and Revenue during a two-day tax reform summit themed “The Lagos Implementation Roadmap”, held on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.

Why Lagos is reforming its tax system Speaking at the summit, the Special Adviser on Taxation and Revenue, Abdul-Kabir Opeyemi Ogungbo, said the reform was driven by persistent complaints from businesses and individuals over excessive taxation and harassment by multiple revenue agents.

According to him, some businesses, especially in the hospitality sector, are visited by more than 16 different revenue-collecting bodies, a situation he described as unsustainable. He said the new framework is designed to bring clarity, reduce duplication and create a fairer tax environment for residents and investors. From 65 taxes to just nine

Under the proposed harmonisation framework, Lagos plans to collapse its current 65 taxes and levies into just nine single-digit charges. These include income tax, stamp duties, property tax, road tax and haulage levy.

Other proposed charges are the economic development levy and a broad harmonised levy that will cover shops, motor parks, slaughter slab fees, domestic animal fees, liquor licences, TV and radio fees, as well as levies on bicycles, trucks, canoes, wheelbarrows and carts that are currently charged separately by local governments.

What the harmonised levies will cover The new structure also introduces a unified user charge, which will combine fees for birth, death and marriage registration, street naming, signage and mobile advertisements, refuse and sewage disposal, burial permits, religious establishment permits and wharf landing charges. In addition, daily ticketing will cover all market-related levies, including tickets paid by transporters. According to Ogungbo, this consolidation will allow better taxpayer data management and streamline revenue operations between state and local governments.

Implementation and legal framework To ensure smooth implementation, the state plans to set up a technical committee and develop a legal framework before deploying the harmonised system. Revenue agencies will also undergo repeated training to ensure consistent enforcement across Lagos.

Representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), said the reforms are necessary to prepare residents and businesses for what to expect when the new tax laws come into force in 2026. He also called for similar harmonisation at the national level to promote uniformity across Nigeria.

Boosting confidence and reducing poverty Lagos State Internal Revenue Service chairman, Ayodele Subair, said the reform would ease the tax burden on businesses and improve planning and compliance. He added that the policy is also designed to help reduce poverty by easing costs related to food, housing and transportation.

Subair disclosed that many essential goods and services previously exempted from VAT will become zero-rated by 2026, meaning no sales tax will apply. He said the new approach ensures that everyone, including farmers and small-scale operators, benefits more fairly from the tax system.

Local governments pledge compliance The summit featured technical sessions with government agencies and local council representatives.

Chairperson of Conference 57 Lagos, Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, pledged that local governments would fully support the reforms and tackle tax duplication at the grassroots level once the harmonised taxes take effect. New tax law: What you must know as salary earner Legit.ng earlier reported that on January 1, 2026, one of the most comprehensive reforms of Nigeria’s tax system is set to redefine how individuals and businesses are taxed. There has been an intense debate among Nigerians, especially the working class, over what the law means for their already stretched finances. While the government insists that the reform only aims to broaden the tax base and simplify compliance, there is misinformation and conflicting reports that have left many workers confused.

Trump’s airstrikes: Halt military cooperation with US immediately – Sheikh Gumi tells Tinubu

Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called on the Federal Government to immediately halt all military cooperation with the United States following reported US airstrikes.

Gumi

Gumi warned that American involvement could worsen Nigeria’s security challenges and undermine national sovereignty.

Gumi made the call in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Friday.

He said while Islam permits the fight against terrorism, such actions should only be carried out by what he described as “clean hands,” arguing that the United States lacks the moral authority to lead such efforts because of its global military record.

According to the cleric, Nigeria made a mistake by allowing foreign powers to play a role in its counterterrorism operations, insisting that “terrorists do not truly fight terrorists” and that such interventions often result in civilian casualties and hidden political motives.

Gumi warned that allowing Nigeria to become a theatre of war would attract anti-US forces into the country, further destabilising it.

He also cautioned that US involvement, particularly under claims of protecting Christians, could polarise the country along religious lines.

The cleric further argued that airstrikes alone cannot defeat terrorism, stressing that effective counterterrorism requires strong ground operations, which he said Nigeria has enough personnel to carry out if properly organised.

“This is the mistake Nigeria has made. Terrorists don’t fight terrorists in truth; they may only kill innocent people and have ulterior motives behind the drama of fighting ‘terror’.

“As a principle, no nation should allow its land to be a theater of war. And no nation should allow its neighbors to be their enemies.

“If Nigeria wants military assistance, China, Turkey, and Pakistan can do the job effectively,” part of his statement read.
