A notable Girls-only school in Lagos, Government Senior College, Agege has highlighted why the school should be upgraded into a model college.
The plea was made by the District TGPS, School Principal, other Stakeholders during the year 2022/2023 Prize Giving Day celebration, themed Dignity and Honour are Embedded in Hard Work held at the School Auditorium.
In his address, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Bolaji Abayomi congratulated the Awardees.
"The Awardees should not rest on their oars while the others should strive to surpass today's winners"
He urged the outgoing students to justify the government's over 1 billion naira investment in their forthcoming examination.
"For those writing Exams, my advice to them is to perform very well. The government has invested heavily in them."
"Government is paying over 1 billion naira as examination fees, so they should show value for money by studying hard"
About the request for Model College Status
Abayomi promised to expedite actions on the request.
In his own remarks, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Education District 1, Mr. Bashir Adebowale applauded the initiative.
"I commend the 1980 set of the school for organizing such prize giving program, it will complement the effort of the government".
"The set has set a pace by motivating the students. For the past 3 years, it has been 100 per cent result from the students".
Adebowale disclosed that the school has produced 7 permanent Secretaries amongst other professions.
He urged the old students to continually be mentors to the students.
Speaking on the event theme, 'Discipline and Honour are Embedded in Hardwork, the Principal of Lagooz School, Chief Mrs Olivet Otubela, said that each of them should put off the mentality that everything comes by luck.
"If you put proper Hard work that is when you see things coming your way".
"Hard work comes with commitment, dedication, sacrifice and putting in your best".
She charged the students to forget the social media euphoria.
The keynote speaker, Barr. Kembi Adejare spoke extensively on students' rights and Responsibilities under the law.
Earlier, in her welcome address, the school principal, Mrs Bola Alamu thanked the 1980 set of Old Students Association for sponsoring the the 3rd edition of the program.
According to her, the school is the best in Lagos State.
She noted that some of the reasons why they are proud of their feats include - consistently excellent academic performance; Qualified and Experienced Faculty of Teachers; State-of-the-art Facilities; Supportive learning environment; Strong Community Involvement; Best Career Guidance and Counseling Unit; Good Alumnae Network; Best School Administrator in Lagos; School Culture; Digital Civility; UNICEF Ambassador; School Hall; Best Laboratories; School Farms; Unique School Anthem Equal to None amongst others.
"We want more for Government Senior College to be upgraded into a model college".
"It has always been my vision, effort and dream since my inception into this school, to have a facelift and be upgraded to model college", Mrs. Bola Alamu asserted.
She praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for honouring her as the Best Senior Secondary School Administrator in Lagos State.
The high point of the event was the prize presentations in various categories to outstanding students, 2022/2023 WASSCE best students, and Non-academic Awards, including Teachers Special Awards and Administrative Special Awards.
It was learnt that the event was fully sponsored by the 1980 set of the school.
