The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has announced that Operation Zero Tolerance on street trading and hawking will commence across Lagos soon, just as the Agency promised to liaise with relevant stakeholders to ensure a successful exercise.
The Corps Marshal of the agency, CP Gbemisola Akinpelu (rtd), who disclosed this today at Alausa, Ikeja during an advocacy campaign to the President-General, Association of Commodity Women and Men of Nigeria, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo said the exercise is in line with the mandate of the present administration for promoting a cleaner, hygienic and beautiful environment that gives aesthetic pleasure.
According to her, “The Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration has always maintained the State government's resolve towards ensuring a greener and cleaner environment. It is therefore important to seek the support of your association and members to key into this vision towards ensuring adequate synergy in order to eradicate street trading, hawking, and indiscriminate dumping of refuse and other environmental nuisance associated with some market places”.
Mrs. Akinpelu opined that the activities of street traders on major roads, such as displaying of goods on roads setbacks and walkways, hawking on highways and indiscriminate dumping of waste impede the free flow of traffic, adding that the traders also expose themselves to various dangers including auto accidents.
While appreciating the tremendous contribution of the leadership and members of the Association towards the socio-economic development of Lagos State, the Corps Marshal, however, solicited for the cooperation of the traders in ensuring proper waste disposal.
In her response, the President-General, Association of Commodity Women and Men of Nigeria, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo appreciated the Corps Marshal’s efforts to sanitise the environment and expressed readiness to partner with the agency in the area of advocacy in markets across the State.
She, however, appealed for a human face in the Agency’s interactions with traders and assured of increased assistance from the body.
