...Arrests Miscreants, Illegal Street Traders

AgegePulse Magazine

Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) over the weekend raided all streets within Central Business District including surroundings of the 'African Shrine', Alausa, Ikeja.

The Chairman of the Agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi said the enforcement operations became imperative following complaints from members of the public about the criminal activities of miscreants and environmental nuisance of illegal street traders around the Shrine.

Egbeyemi disclosed that 28 miscreants and 15 illegal street traders were arrested at various locations around Alausa, hinting that the raid was also initiated due to the nefarious acts within the vicinity of the African Shrine which presented a negative image to tourists and Lagosians as a whole.

According to the Chairman, "The night enforcement operation was carried out on all roads around African Shrine where sales of hard drugs like Tramadol, Codeine, Skunk, Weed, Illegal Mixed Liquor, Assorted Food and all sorts of consumable and non-consumable items are freely sold on the streets in defiance of security agencies and government authority”.

CSP Egbeyemi maintained that the enforcement operations will be a continuous exercise in line with the vision of the present administration to rid the entire State of street urchins and criminals.

"The Lagos State Government has vowed to sustain the security onslaught on all areas identified as criminal hideouts and hard drug outlets across the State, especially within the metropolis,” Egbeyemi said.

One of the arrested miscreants (Tunde Babalola) who was caught with a bag of substance suspected to be Indian hemp confirmed that he has been selling hard drugs for eight years, particularly around 'African Shrine' at Ikeja.

He confirmed further that dealing in hard drugs is a lucrative business, saying he realised an average profit between N60,000 and N100,000 weekly from customers around Obalende, Akala, Mushin, Bariga and Ikeja.

Another arrested trader who simply identified herself as Mrs. Abike Adeyemi disclosed that she paid N1,900 every week to a representative of Ikeja Local Government from the sales of 'Skuchies' and 'Hot drinks' around the ‘African Shrine’.

The Task Force Chairman has confirmed that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Zubairu Muazu has directed that all those arrested be immediately prosecuted.

Sort your waste for recycling – LAWMA MD

AgegePulse Magazine

The Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has again urged residents to imbibe the culture of waste sorting at source by dropping all recyclable items in one bag and other waste items in another. This comes on the heels of the recently launched Blue Box Program of the state government.

He spoke at Orile bus stop during a road show organized by LAWMA along Lagos Badagry Expressway, to create awareness among residents and to distribute waste bags to them.

According to him, the Authority embarked on the massive sensitization program, to draw the attention of residents in the area to the need for proper sanitation and cleaner surroundings.

“Today we’ve come to sensitize the community on how to maintain a clean environment because a clean environment is the beginning of good health for all Lagosians. If you don’t have a clean environment, you cannot enjoy good health”, Dr. Gbadegesin said.

Speaking further he said, “You were keeping one waste bag before, but now you will be keeping two bags; one bag for your recyclable materials like plastic bottles, cans and water sachets while the other bag is for general waste. That is why we are distributing the bags to you, for the “Blue Box” program which the governor launched last week.”

“I also want you to stop the idea of using refuse to reclaim land. This is an unwholesome practice that is harmful to the environment and must be discontinued”, he stressed.

The LAWMA boss also stated that the agency, as a follow-up to the recent executive order on sanitation by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had commenced massive clean-up exercises along Orile – Lagos Badagry Expressway, to ensure that the stretch was rid of black spots and all forms of environmental nuisance.

He urged residents in the area to support government’s efforts by embracing right environmental practices, to protect them from dangers of environmental pollution, adding that the Authority had commenced distribution of trash bags, in line with the blue box program, to enable residents sort their wastes properly for recycling.

Mr. Funsho Adeolu, a renowned Nigerian actor and LAWMA ambassador, said he joined the campaign to promote environmental sustainability in the state, urging Lagosians to support LAWMA’s efforts at restoring the environment through proper waste management practices like waste sorting for recycling.

Also at the sensitization exercise was Ohekwuru Tony, a child environmental advocate with Children for Cleaner Lagos, who educated residents on how to dispose of their wastes properly, as well as the importance of waste segregation for recycling

Xenophobia: How 187 Nigerians arrived Lagos from South Africa

...Arrests 135 Nigerians

AgegePulse Magazine

The first batch of 187 Nigerians being evacuated from South Africa have arrived Nigeria through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

The returnee Nigerians departed their base in South Africa from OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, around 4:00 p.m aboard an Air Peace Boeing 777 aircraft, which landed in Lagos at 9:34 pm Wednesday night.

Those awaiting the arrival of these Nigerians caught up in the xenophobic crisis in South Africa have waited for the whole day  at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport until their flight landed in Lagos Wednesday night.

The Air Peace flight, a Boeing 777-200 plane transporting the Nigerians on their arrival at the airport were received by the Chairman, Diaspira Commission, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa and the Chairman of Air Peace airline, Mr. Allen Onyema.

Some of the returnees who spoke to journalists told stories of woes that bedeviled them in the hands of the hostile South Africans during the attacks.

The arrival of the flight which was earlier scheduled for 2:00 pm Nigeria local time was delayed for over eight hours following the uncooperative attitude of the South African immigration officials.

Despite three days of rigorous efforts put in by the Nigeria’s High Commission in South Africa in conjunction with the Nigeria’s Controller General of Immigrations to process emergency travel documents for the troubled Nigerians whose papers had expired to leave the hostile country aboard Air Peace airline special flight out of the African country, the South African authorities at the last minute came up with a fresh demand of another round of documentation of the Nigerians.

Out of the earlier number of 317 Nigerians already cleared for evacuation, while 182 was allowed to board the flight, the remaining 135 were at the point of boarding arrested by the South African officials who accused the Nigerians of entering their country illegally.

The activities of the South African authorities which led to the extra eight hours of delay also subjected scores of both foreign and local journalists to a whole day of endless waiting for the flight to arrive as they waited anxiously at the hajj/cargo axis of the Lagos international airport.

How Agbede Endorsed MC Oluomo As Lagos NURTW Boss

...Settle Rift, Caution Members

AgegePulse Magazine

The leadership crisis that many thought may lead to another blood bath among the members of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) was resolved “peacefully” on Monday, it was learnt.

This followed the endorsement of Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (aka MC Oluomo), who was appointed by the union’s national body as the Lagos State Caretaker Committee Chairman by the immediate past NURTW Lagos State Council Chairman, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede.

Akinsanya and 17 others were last Wednesday appointed Caretaker Committee members to run the council union.

The National Deputy Secretary-General, Kayode Agbeyangi led the national and zonal leaders to swear in the new state helmsmen at the union’s state headquarters at Oko-Oba, Agege.

Agbede, who was said not to have favoured Akinsanya to succeed him, showed up at the swearing-in.

Many were surprised by his appearance and subsequent peace message to the gathering.

Agbede declared Akinsanya as the new leader of the state council.

He urged all members irrespective of where they belong to support Akinsanya and join him to move the association forward.

The era of changing leadership of the union through bloodbath, he said, should be jettisoned.

“I want members of our union in Lagos State to let peace reign and join hands together with the committee chairman to move theunion forward,” he said.

Agbede urged the union leaders to do things in accordance with the union’s constitution.

Agbeyangi hailed Agbede for ensuring that the leadership crisis is resolved.

According to him, the immediate past chairman has handed over all the property of the union in his custody to the new leadership.

He urged other former executive members totoe the same line.

He warned the new leadership not todiscriminate against any member.

Agbeyangi also enjoined members to stop posting negative materials on the social media.

According to him, executive members at branchesand units’ level have not been dissolved.

“No one should go and take over any branch because of the new leadership at the state level. You should also stop circulating rumours just to create unnecessary tension,” he said.

Akinsanya urged the members to sheath their swords and embrace one another.

“We have won the war but the most important thing now is to win the peace. We are one and we will always remain brothers irrespective of our differences during the struggle for this position. Whoever I have offended should forgive me; I also forgive those who offended me. Be sure that we are going to run this administration together. Let us join handtogether to make this union great,” he said.

The NURTW boss warned that henceforth there will be no forceful takeover of the union’s branch, adding that anybody that participates in such act will end up in jail.

He directed all branch’s chairmen to recall any member suspended during the electioneering period.

The State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, who made the disclosure at the stakeholders’ meeting held in Alausa, Ikeja noted that the invalidation of the exercise by a court is a temporary setback to the reintroduction of the exercise.

He said the meeting, which also had the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Ronke Odeneye and Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegeshin in attendance, was convened to seek the buy-in of market leaders, women and men on the government's zero-tolerance for indiscriminate dumping of waste.

The Commissioner told the market leaders who had not engaged the services of PSP waste operators to link up with the State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and do so immediately as well as ensure that no form of waste is dumped on the roads henceforth.

Bello averred that, in conjunction with the appointed PSP waste operators, a point within the market must be identified where all the waste generated should be gathered before being carted away by the PSP operator.

While assuring the market leaders that the State will not hesitate to sanction PSP operators that failed to perform their duties appropriately, he declared that the Government would have no option but to shut any market that proves recalcitrant, harbours refuse or dumps same on the roads.

He also revealed that as a form of motivation, competitions would be re-introduced to recognise and reward markets adjudged as the cleanest.

In her response, the Iyaloja-General, Mrs. Folasade Tinubu-Ojo promised to ensure that market sanitation becomes a daily task that all market leaders will adopt.

She assured that the association was ready to cooperate with the State government to adopt all methods proposed by the government to ensure cleanliness in all markets and its environs.

In furtherance of its commitment to driving equality through gender inclusion, the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) in a partnership with Access Bank on Wednesday, September 4, 2019, launched the ‘LSETF W-INITIATIVE’ to provide funding for women entrepreneurs in Lagos State to achieve their growth objectives and create jobs for the youths.

The ‘LSETF W Initiative’ has set aside a 4 billion Naira special intervention fund, contributed equally by the LSETF and Access Bank, to provide access to affordable finance for female-owned businesses in Lagos State.

The initiative will also provide business support to these businesses to stimulate growth and consequently create employment for the teeming young population in Lagos State. The intervention is expected to deepen the entrepreneurship ecosystem in the State, whilst helping to stem the tide on its unemployment rate.

Women-owned businesses or enterprises with at least 50% women ownership and have been in business for one to five years are eligible to apply for up to N5mllion loan from the programme.

At the launch of the ‘LSETF W-INITIATIVE’ at the Blue Roof, LTV 8, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, the Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed the commitment of his administration to tackle unemployment in the state adding that creating opportunities for small businesses and ensuring that women are in alignment with the THEMES objectives of the administration.

According to the Governor, “There is no argument that climes, where young people and women are at the centre of economic planning, have emerged prosperous, progressive and remain the model of development. In Lagos State, the Government’s strategy is to optimise and sustainably grow our local economy, projected to be the fifth-largest economy in Africa, by creating access to funds for our women entrepreneurs. We are confident that it is an intervention that would create wealth for small businesses and consequently put our young and productive youth to work.”

In his remarks, the CEO and Group Managing Director of Access Bank Plc, Herbert Wigwe said, “Access Bank is fully committed to bridging the existing gap and provide women with the support they need to successfully implement their business ideas.”

“Looking at the number of women present here today, I don’t think the initial N4billion we set aside to help women will be sufficient and based on that, the initiative fund will be increased to N10billion. Through partnerships with organisations such as LSETF, Access Bank will continue to help women break boundaries, reinvent the status-quo and take advantage of opportunities provided by technology and quality financial systems to make significant impact on the economy of Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole,” Wigwe added.

According to him, Access Bank has a long history of supporting female empowerment, offering over 8,000 personal loans valued at over N10.6billion since 2018, with over 330 loans given to women in business valued at over N16.6billion.

Also commenting, the LSETF Board of Trustees Chairman, Mrs Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru, said “The LSETF W Initiative aligns with the Fund’s strategic efforts to actualise the commitment of the State Government of ensuring that at least 50% of the beneficiaries of LSETF programmes are women.”

The BoT Chairman revealed that the Fund is incrementally achieving this objective through its three core programmes. Women represent a total of 5,263 or 50% of the total number of loan beneficiaries and account for 43.54% of the Fund’s total loan portfolio with (approximately N3.07billion) so far.

Also, over 74% of the beneficiaries in our Micro-Enterprise Start-Up Programme are women. Furthermore, 49% of the total 4,909 people trained through our Employability Programme are women.

“That is not all. We have supported 16 female-led start-ups with workspace vouchers as part of the Fund’s Lagos Innovates programme which seeks to make Lagos State the tech-hub of Africa”, she added.

In addition to the unveiling of the LSETF W Initiative at the event, 600 beneficiaries of the LSETF’s flagship Loan Programme were presented with cheques in a symbolic ceremony led by the Lagos State Governor. The new beneficiaries join 10,753 other entrepreneurs who have successfully been credited with N7.5 billion in the last 4 years.
