Employment: FG To Revamp Moribond Textile Industries, Sanwo-Olu, Uzodimma To Lead

The Federal Government is mulling a revamp of the textile industries in Nigeria to leverage on its job creation potentials.

Uzodinma and Sanwo-Olu

To this end, the Vice President, Kashim Shettima hosted a number of stakeholders at the Presidential Villa Abuja on Tuesday, which included the governors of Lagos and Imo State to draw ideas on how best to go about revamping the moribond industries.

Recall that Nigeria was a net producer of cotton used in the production of textiles, with major industrial hubs located in Lagos and Kaduna States.

Over the years, the sector dwindled in production leading to mass retrenchment of workers, partly attributed to government policies and neglect of the sector.

Imo Governor, Hope Uzodinma said it was germane for those in the helm of affairs to do everything within its power to stimulate the Nigerian economy, hence the buy-in of governors to the project.

He said, “Like the United Nations Cotton Manufacturing, the entire production chain of cotton is up to 10 sides and the whole idea is to leverage on this opportunity to revamp the industries in Nigeria, which many of them are now moribond, particularly in the cotton and textile sector.

“This is a new opportunity that is creating a new partnership for us to cross pollinate ideas with experts, to bring new skills, new ideas and new innovations into revamping the industries in Nigeria, and that will create jobs and engage our young men and women that are currently roaming the streets.

“So for me, I am very excited to be part of this conversation that will now revamp the economy of the country. Is a new partnership which we will leverage on.

“Before this time, you will agree with me, in Lagos State, Isolo area to be precise, you see so many textile industries. Kaduna was famous as a centre for cotton production and textile mills. In the northern areas the land was very fertile for growing cotton and then processing cotton. So I think we need to stimulate the economy. We need to create more jobs, we need to redefine Nigeria. We need to engage our young men and women, and then align properly with the new digital age for production and economic stimulation”.

Corroborating Uzodinma, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu urged Nigerians to patronise made in Nigeria textiles because of the impact it would have on the economy.

He said the textile industries have the potential of engaging over 15 to 20 million Nigerians hence the critical nature of the sector.

“If we are growing cotton, are we ready to patronize the ones we are producing locally? Because that’s one issue the textile manufacturers raised, that when they manufacture fabrics many persons prefer the ones from Italy?

” So I think the explanation has been made. Part of the things that you see with our garment manufacturer, is actually polyester, not cotton. And polyester happens to be cheaper than cotton. You know, cotton is a higher grade to sew as against using polyester if our refineries were working for what we’ve also been made to understand now is actually supposed to be one of the byproducts coming out from the refinery.

AgegePulse Magazine

...Says initiative will stimulate economic activities in food markets

Presentation of Cheque by Gov. Sanwo-Olu

In fulfilment of his promise and demonstration of love to market men and women on Valentine’s Day, Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, flagged off the distribution of N750million financial intervention scheme tagged “Lagos Market Trader Money” for 15,000 beneficiaries.

The 15,000 beneficiaries, who received N50,000 each, were drawn from across all the six geo-political zones of Nigeria – South-West, South-East, South-South, North-Central, North-West and North East, but are all residents of Lagos.

Speaking during the launch of the Lagos Market Trader Money held at De Blue Roof, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the gesture will go a long way to actualise his goal of transforming the food systems in Lagos State and stimulate economic activities in various food markets in line with his administration’s THEMES+ developmental agenda.

It would be recalled that Governor Sanwo-Olu during the commissioning of the Mid-Level Agro produce Hub, Idi-Oro, Mushin on Sunday, December 17, 2023, announced a N750million financial intervention scheme for Lagos traders tagged “Lagos Market Trader Money” for 15,000 traders across the State.

Governor Sanwo-Olu fulfilled his promise in less than 60 days as 250 traders from each of 20 local governments and 37 Local Development Council Areas (LCDAs), as well as 750 beneficiaries identified from markets within the barracks and military formations across the State, on Wednesday, received N50,000 each.

Sanwo-Olu implored the beneficiaries of the Lagos Market Trader Money to make the best and judicious use of the grant in ways that will contribute to the economic development of the State.

“I urge you to let the citizens of Lagos feel the impact of this grant and all the other support that this administration has been providing towards ensuring food security, through reasonable reduction in the cost of basic food items in a way that it will be affordable to ordinary Lagosians,” he said.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the initiative was conceptualized as a stop-gap measure of the Lagos State Government to empower small-scale traders in the Food Systems by providing them financial support to expand their businesses thereby fostering economic growth and improving the lives of many within the State.

He said: “This will ensure sustainable livelihoods and facilitate business expansion for 15,000 traders who occupy a strategic position in the State’s economic pyramid and food distribution network.

“Lagos State, which has a growing population presently estimated at over 24 million has a food system transaction value of over N6trillion annually, is in the process of establishing a dynamic food market system under the Food Systems Transformation Agenda to promote the preservation, storage, transportation and presentation of wholesome food to the populace, with the aim of reducing food waste, improve affordability, guarantee food safety, quality and accessibility.

“This initiative led to the implementation of key projects such as the establishment of the Lagos Central Food Security System and Logistics Hub, Ketu-Ereyun, Epe and the Mid-Level Agro Produce Hub, Idi-Oro, Mushin. As a mark of our resolve to follow through with the Agenda, work has commenced on three additional Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hubs at Sangotedo, Agege, and Abule-Ado, while the first phase of the Lagos Central Food Security System and Logistics Hub will be commissioned by December 2024.”

Speaking on how the 15,000 traders were selected for the Lagos Market Trader Money, Governor Sanwo-Olu disclosed that “The beneficiaries were identified by the State’s Agricultural Field Officers serving each LGA/LCDA in collaboration with the Iyaloja/Babaloja General and Market Masters of each Local Government/Local Council Development Area across the State.

“The beneficiaries were selected through a methodical process targeted at 200 beneficiaries from markets in each LGA/LCDA in addition to 50 beneficiaries that were selected by the Iyaloja/Babaloja General in each LGA/LCDA making a total of 14,250 market traders.

“Also, 750 beneficiaries were identified from markets within the Barracks and Military formations across the State in collaboration with their respective Iyaloja/Babaloja. This brings the total number of beneficiaries to 15,000.

“To ensure fairness in the selection process while demonstrating the spirit of Lagos as being home to all, the beneficiaries were drawn from across all the geopolitical zones of the Nation with 11,039 from the South-West, 914 from the South-East, 868 from the South-South, 1,710 from North- Central, 373 from the North-West and 107 from the North-East.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu also noted that 75 percent of the beneficiaries are women while the remaining 25 percent are men, adding that 35 percent of the beneficiaries are below 40 years while 65 percent are above 40 years. He said this goes to show the social inclusiveness in implementing the initiative.

Speaking earlier, Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, said the Lagos Market Trader Money initiative is part of the government’s efforts towards ensuring sustainable livelihoods and wealth creation for traders across the State.

She said: “This initiative is part of the State Government’s commitment to the development of the downstream segment of food and agricultural value chains which centers on markets and market access. This is due to the fact that Lagos is the largest market city-state in sub-Saharan Africa.

“The support that would be extended today is targeted at expanding the capacity of the beneficiaries to off-take more produce from our farmers thereby catalysing increased food production in and outside the State.

“This Initiative, jointly implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Local Governments, in collaboration with market leaders across all the 57 LGAs and LCDAs is only the first of many to be launched by Mr. Governor towards helping to shoulder the burdens of the citizenry, ranging from food, health, education to transportation.”

Also speaking, the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, Chief (Mrs.) Folasade Tinubu-Ojo appreciated Governor Sanwo-Olu for the good gestures to market men and women in Lagos State.

She enjoined traders, who are beneficiaries of the Lagos Market Trader Money to make good use of the N50,000 given to them to augment their businesses.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority-LASRERA to commence an investigation into a viral video clip made by one Mr Kayode Oladipo about 20 plots of lands he supposedly bought in 2017 from a Property Company, RevolutionPlus without any physical allocation of the said plots.

Following the Governor’s directive, the Lagos State Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Housing, Barr.Barakat Odunuga-Bakare and Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Housing, Engr. Gbolahan Toriola, on Friday, invited the Management of RevolutionPlus Limited who was led the company’s Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director, Dr.Bamidele Onalaja, for fact-finding.

The information gathering process by the top government officials, according to the Commissioner for Housing will help find lasting solutions to frequent reports of fraudulent practices in the State’s real Sector and thus protect the interest of investors and investees in the Real Estate business transactions in Lagos State.

Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Housing, Barr.Barakat Odunuga-Bakare recalled that before the viral video made by Mr Kayode Oladipo, there had been some concerns raised by members of the public about the conduct of RevolutionPlus Property Limited to some of its subscribers.

The members of the investigation team reiterated the resolve of the State government to investigate the allegation against RevolutionPlus Limited in line with LASRERA Law 2022.

According to them, LASRERA Law 2022 empowers the agency to investigate petitions and complaints from members of the public to protect and promote sanity as well as boost further investors' confidence both at home and foreign investments for the sector in Lagos State.

The CEO/MD of the real estate company, Dr.Bamidele Onalaja, affirmed that Mr. Kayode Oladipo (complainant) subscribed for 20 (Twenty) plots of land from RevolutionPlus Property Limited at Dallas Court, Lekki and Royalty Gardens, Ajah, in Lagos State.

Dr. Onalaja explained that 2 (two) out of the original 20 plots were fully paid for by the client, while the necessary documentation has been completed and handed over to him.

He added that the remaining 18 (eighteen) plots of those land have not been fully paid by Mr. Kayode Oladipo as he flouted the payment agreement on the contract.

He said that property NOT fully paid for with its associated costs will not be processed based on contract conditions because, in case of non-compliance, the company policy requires the relocation of such subscriber to another site upon completion of payment or refund of the deposited sum less 40%( forty percent).

He noted that having defaulted in his payment pattern, RevolutionPlus Property Limited relocated him to another land site at Amazon Estate, Epe, which he declined while the option of refunding the sum advanced was also rejected by Mr Kayode Oladipo, the complainant.

Onalaja said that the company has finalized the allocation of 5 (five) plots to Mr. Kayode Oladipo at Amazon Estate based on the payment made with necessary documents forwarded to him.

The CEO of RevolutionPlus Property Limited also added that Mr Kayode Oladipo did not make a payment of N40,000,000.00 (Forty Million to the company as claimed in the viral video, urging members of the public to disregard his claims as untrue and misleading.

However, in the course of the committee’s investigation, Mr Kayode Oladipo who was contacted on the phone, maintained that he paid the deposit sum of N18,606,000.00 (Eighteen Million, Six Hundred and Six Thousand Naira to RevolutionPlus Property Limited in 2017.

He said that along the line, he lost his job and couldn't continue with the payment as he initially agreed.

He confirmed that he declined the option of relocation to Amazon Estate, Epe in Lagos State, and wants the State Government to compel RevolutionPlus Property Limited to allocate his subscribed plots of land to him.

The Investigation Committee explained to Mr. Kayode Oladipo that having defaulted in his payment arrangement, the real estate company has the right to offer the option of relocation to another site equivalent to money paid or the option of refund of the amount paid less 40% as stipulated in the agreed contract of sales by both parties.

It should be noted that after the deliberations by the investigation team, Mr Kayode Oladipo (Complainant) has agreed to accept the allocation of (5) plots of land at Amazon Estate, Epe of Lagos State which is equivalent to the present value of his payment.

Rejected Nominees: We Can't Be Intimidated, Lagos Assembly Declares

- says there are plans to attack Speaker Obasa, lawmakers

- says no rift between Governor and Speaker

Sanwo-Olu and Obasa

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday revealed that there are plans by some people to attack Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and other lawmakers over the recent screening and rejection of some cabinet nominees sent by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The House, however, said its action concerning the nominees was in tandem with the constitution, which stipulates its responsibilities and, as such, would not succumb to threats and intimidations, including planned sponsored protests and analysis by some civil society groups and activists.

It also said it had refrained itself from revealing all that it discovered during the screening of the nominees while warning that "those who live in glass houses should be conscious not to throw stones."

"Before today, I had been reliably informed of the plan to attack the Speaker based on the decision of the House concerning the nominees of the Governor, particularly the rejected ones," Dr. Obasa said during plenary adding that he had been inundated with calls from people and members of the House.

The Speaker stressed that the House does not have any fight with Sanwo-Olu or the executive arm as projected by some people, who may not be aware of the actual reasons for the rejection of the nominees.

"There is this erroneous belief that we are waging war against the Governor. There is no basis for me and the House to fight the Governor. I will continue to say that the Governor is a brother and colleague in the Lagos project and service to the people of our State.

"The Governor and I have been around in the system for long. While he was SA to the former Deputy Governor, Femi Pedro, I was in this House as chairman, Committee on Rural Development. He was SA on Establishment and Pensions and I was chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts (Local Governments). While he was heading LSDPC, I was chairman, Committee on Economic Planning and Budget. Then, I became the Speaker and when he became the Governor, I remained the Speaker. So it's been a long journey together.

"But I wonder why anytime the House says no to a particular request of the Governor, it is taken by some people to mean there is a fight with the Governor. This House has passed so many resolutions that the executive arm refused to carry out, but people don't see that as something to talk about and the House does not raise eyebrows. So I don't know what brings the erroneous belief that the House is fighting the Governor, who is our brother and who we will continue to work with.

"However, we have a constitutional responsibility. Just as the Governor has the responsibility to inform the House about his nominees, the House has the responsibility to say 'yes' or 'no' which we have exercised by confirming some and denying some and we have our reasons for saying 'no' to some of the nominees.

"The House, as a body, has refrained itself from exposing what it discovered during the screening exercise and we are not going to be forced to spill to the public," Dr. Obasa said.

Concerning the rejection of Prof. Akin Ababyomi, former health commissioner, Obasa said considerations went beyond his efforts in the fight against COVID-19 which he described as an isolated issue in the challenged health sector of the State.

"Before Prof. Abayomi, there were Leke Pitan, Dr. Jide Idris and others. COVID-19 was an isolated case that was considered. Before COVID-19, we had Ebola which was also taken care of under Babatunde Fashola.

"Beyond all these, we are the representatives of the people, their mouthpieces, eyes and ears. The health sector of Lagos is not just about COVID-19. We have general hospitals and other health care centres around the State. What can be said about them?

"Before Engineer Aramide Adeyoye, we also had Engineer Ganiyu Johnson and Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as Commissioner for Works and under whom the Ikoyi-Victoria Island link bridge was built while Babatunde Fashola was Governor. Under Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as Governor, there was masaive infrastructural development too.

"So we must stop making allusions concerning somethings we do not understand. They mentioned the former c

Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho and his experience. But how about actions in office?" Obasa asked.

The Speaker added that as a politician whose party is in power, the priority of those in government should be the interest of the people.

He urged those planning to sponsor actions against the House to realise that protests and sponsored articles would not make the House rescind its decision.

"The civil society that is threatening to protest should do so because it is a constitutional right. But we are not going to be threatened or intimidated. We have said no, but if there is a convincing or germane reason for us to reverse our decision, we will, but not by threats.

"It is because we are successful as politicians that is why the technocrats are being appointed. And to our own estimation, if they have not done well, we have right to say no and we have said no.

"We don't want instigations and conflicts, the executive and the House are working together; we are brothers and colleagues; we will continue to work together but we need to caution fourth columnists not to instigate crisis. And those that are living in glass houses need to be careful," he warned.

MUSLIMS PROTEST AGAINST CHRISTIANS DOMINATION ON LAGOS CABINET LIST

 AgegePulse Magazine

Apparently dissatisfied with the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on modes of selecting individuals to form his cabinet members for second term, Muslims across the state have taken to street to kick against it for allegedly marginalizing them in the selection processes in the state.

MUSLIMS PROTEST AGAINST CHRISTIANS DOMINATION ON LAGOS CABINET LIST.

The Muslims, who are demanding a total review of the list, said that the demonstration was against the alleged lopsidedness of the governor’s nominations for commissioners in Lagos.

This demonstration came barely one week after the Muslims raised alarm over alleged marginalization in the composition of individuals expected to assist Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, pilot affairs of the state.

Despite earlier concerned raised by the Muslims for fair representation, 20 out of the 39 commissioners nominated by the governor have so far been screened by the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The demonstration on Wednesday started at about 8.30am when the Muslims stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly complex, to express their grievances against the move by the governor.

The President, Muslim Community of Lagos, Professor Tajudeen Gbadamosi is being joined by leaders of notable Muslim organisations who have been part of the struggle from inception.

They argued that the recent list of 39 commissioner-nominees released by Sanwo-Olu, the Muslims were allegedly treated unfairly.

They were carrying banners and placards with inscriptions such as “Muslims say no to official discrimination,” “All we ask is fairness,” “Stop the Screening Now, we want Justice”, among others.

In the petition read by the President, the Muslims expressed “grievance and dissatisfaction against the blatant disregard for justice, equity and fairness in the proposed Lagos State’ Executive cabinet as contained in the list of commissioner-nominees.

According to the group, the list “is a classic case of discrimination and religious bigotry, as it has 31 nominees who are of the Christian faith and only eight (8) nominees who are Muslims.”

Security Operatives, Law Enforcement Agencies To Wear Body Cam in Lagos | AgegePulse Magazine

• ‘Initiative Will Enhance Safety, Boost Investors’ Confidence’ - Governor

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, rolled out a groundbreaking plan for the enhancement of security and safety in Lagos State. The Governor approved a mass training for the State’s law enforcement personnel on the use of body worn cameras, ahead of the deployment of the digital tools for security operations across the State.

The three-day training, which will commence in May, will be facilitated by the State’s Law Enforcement Training Institute (LETI), headed by Prince Oyekan Falade. After the training, all State-funded law enforcement officers will be commissioned to wear body cameras for their operations.

Sanwo-Olu said the move would improve transparency and accountability in the activities of law enforcement agencies, and put the State Government in a better position to respond to security challenges in real time.

Provision of adequate security, the Governor said, is a key pillar of his administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S. agenda, stressing that the initiative reflected his Government’s resolution to ensure Lagos remained secure for residents and investors.

He said: “I am pleased to inaugurate the use of body-worn cameras by law enforcement officers in Lagos and this is a groundbreaking move to enhance safety in the State, as well as increase transparency and accountability in the activities of our law enforcement agencies. Lagos State has strategically set the pace among other States in Nigeria to launch the use of body worn cameras by law enforcement officers.

“The security challenges in different parts of the country are worrisome, but with proactive action, the use of modern technological tools, and a mix of well-trained and intelligent officers, we will successfully combat many of these challenges. With body-worn cameras, our law enforcement officers are better equipped to protect lives and properties, thereby, making Lagos safer for us all.”

Sanwo-Olu said the launch of the body-worn cameras would take the Government a step closer towards fulfilling its security agenda, stressing that the introduction of devices to frontline security team and officers would enhance their productivity and professionalism, while also fast-tracking law enforcement process.

The cameras, the Governor pointed out, will help the State Government check abuse of power and excesses by security personnel, while also improving the safety and accountability of officers, who will use the devices for evidence sharing and intelligence gathering.

“I am hopeful that all officers will optimise the cameras that will be assigned to them for the furtherance of justice and improvement of the law enforcement process. Our Government will continue to prioritise the welfare of our law enforcement officers whose pivotal efforts we acknowledge in the entrenchment of a safe city,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Khadijat Shittabey, applauded the Governor for approving the initiative, stressing that the body worn cameras would help the ministry in the administration of justice.

She said: “The cameras will also help to enhance professionalism on the part of the law enforcement agents, provide digital evidence of events and provide additional means of protection for officers. The cameras will be used to establish guilt or innocence of officers when confronted with allegations of wrongdoing.”

Falade, after demonstrating the operation of the camera on the Governor, said 7,000 officers will be trained in the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC).

The training, LETI boss disclosed, will be done in 26 batches to reduce crowding of the training centre.

LETI was established in 2013 through an Executive Order, to set standards for recruitment of law enforcement agents, training and development of the officers.

Lagosians home and abroad soon will no long have a fear in purchasing decent, affordable housing in Lagos.

This development was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Housing, Mrs. Toke Benson Awoyinka as Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) hosted recently the first of its kind Real Estate Conference and Exhibition in the Real Estate Capital of Africa, with the theme: “Unearthing real opportunities in Real Estate.” at the Eko Hotel & Suits, VI, Lagos.

The epoch event which have in attendance, the Governor of Lagos, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Government Agencies, Captains of Industries, Real Estate Agents, Estate valuers, and others Stakeholders in Real Estate Business was another turnaround initiative to solve housing deficit in Lagos.

Speaking at the event, The Governor harped on the need for massive regeneration of properties in mainland part of Lagos, charging real estate investors and private developers to divert their investment to rebuilding mainland and redistributing wealth from the business.

He said: “I need to charge the real estate investors that, everybody needs not build in Sangotedo or Ibeju Lekki. Let us go to mainland and start regeneration of the assets in that part of Lagos. This way, we would be redistributing wealth and creating opportunities for our citizens.

The Governor said the State’s Department of Lands had built the required capacity for smooth transition to the online platform, stressing that the plan was already in its final stage.

When the web-based platform is finally launched, there will be no need for applicants seeking for Certificates of Occupancy (C of O), survey and building plan approvals to physically submit paper documents for authorisation. All documentation and payments will be done by applicants from the comfort of their homes.

Sanwo-Olu said the new development would bring about quick turnaround time in land transactions and boost private investors’ confidence in provision of home ownership model that will address deficits in housing.

He said: “We have improved on our GIS solution to accelerating land matters in Lagos. From the first quarter of next year, we will be launching an online platform on which all land transactions will be done. When the project kick-starts next year, there will be one-stop shop for all transactions relating to land, including Governor’s approval on CofO, and building approval by Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

“We have given our commitment on this, because of the need to improve the turnaround time from when people submit their requests for approval and the time the authorisation is completed. We cannot afford to disappoint private investors and applicants seeking real time approval. We are raising our capacity, so that we can respond to the requests and discharge them.”

The Governor charged residents and property developers applying for approvals to stop cutting corners and circumventing the process, stressing that sharp practices would only make it difficult for impatient applicants to get their documents approved.

Earlier, Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, said the conference was held with an objective to bring stakeholders in property business in contact with relevant Government agencies and address bottlenecks slowing down property transactions.

She said LASRERA was created with a mandate to bridge the gap of credibility in property business, pointing out that the Government responded to the yearnings of industry players, having realised there were genuine real estate practitioners and property developers, as well as genuine home and property seekers who were desirous of credibility in real estate transactions in Lagos.

Benson-Awoyinka said the regulatory agency, since inception, had set processes in motion to change the negative image of property development business and check malpractices which the sector had faced in the last decades.

She said: “As a Government that is determined to bridge the housing deficit in the State, we are aware of our role in not just the provision of houses, but also create an enabling environment for the private sector working hand in hand to a desired end.

“We are making a renewed appeal to investors in the sector to team up with the State Government to create a home ownership model that will help address the deficits observed in housing market in the State our through Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative in providing mass housing for our people.” Toke-Benson, Concluded

The two days conference featured exhibitions for home marketing firms, Government and private property developers.
