AMBODE, AMOSUN, GOWON, AKIOLU, OTHERS CELEBRATE WILLIAMS AT 99

…He’s A True Nigerian We Should All Be Proud Of, Says Lagos Gov

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode and his Ogun State counterpart, Senator Ibikunle Amosun on Thursday led other eminent Nigerians to celebrate the first African to qualify as a chartered accountant, Chief Akintola Williams who clocked 99, describing him as a true Nigerian who worked assiduously to lift up the country.

Speaking to reporters at a special birthday reception held in honour of Williams at his Lagos residence, Governor Ambode described the celebrant as the doyen of accountancy profession and elder statesman who deserved to be celebrated for his contribution to the growth and development of the country.

According to the Governor, “The main reason why we are here is to celebrate a true Nigerian and for somebody who has actually contributed to the development of Nigeria and he is still alive at 99, is worth celebrating and this is like a prelude to the centenary that we are waiting to celebrate next year, and that is why you can see that Ogun State Governor is here too.

“Apart from the fact that Chief Akintola Williams is the Doyen of the Accountancy Profession, we see him as a founding father of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN); he is also the founding father of the Musical Society of Nigeria. So, he has too many parts and this is one Nigerian that we are proud of and we are willing to celebrate him every day,” Governor Ambode said.

He particularly commended Williams for his role in the development of Lagos, saying the State Government would continue to celebrate true Nigerians like him.

“That I am here today is more or less to say a big thank you to him for lifting up Lagos; for lifting up Nigeria and we also wish him well on behalf of all Lagosians. We will continue to celebrate true Nigerians and he (Chief Williams) is just one true Nigerian, an elder statesman that we should all be proud of,” Governor Ambode said.

Responding, Williams appreciated all those who found time to be with him on his special day, and wished them long life as well.

Aside Governors Ambode and Amosun, other eminent Nigerians at the event include former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd); first Military Governor of Lagos State, Brigadier-General Mobolaji Johnson (rtd); Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu; foremost banker and founder of First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Otunba Subomi Balogun; legal luminary and philanthropist, Chief Chris Ogunbanjo; former ICAN Presidents, among other captains of industries and members of the diplomatic corps.

Egunjobi donates 3-month salaries to orphanage

Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State, Alhaji Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi, was today at Bab-es-Salam Orphanage to celebrate his birthday with orphans during which he pledged the donation of his three-month salaries to the home.

The celebration coincided with Egunjobi’s 365 days in office as he was sworn in as the council’s chairman last year’s July 25, on his birthday.

Speaking during his visit, the Chairman, who was accompanied by the Council’s Vice-Chairman, Prince Abiodun Ogunji, Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Gbenga Abiola, Councilors, Supervisors, management and selected staff, said it was not in his character to celebrate his birthday, adding that this time around he let sound reason prevailed.

The Council boss explained that after he was left with no choice, he took the decision to celebrate in the orphanage with orphans advising the privileged to support the needy in kind and cash as enjoined by the holy books.

“I had never celebrated my birthday before until today because I don’t see it as important. Today, have come to celebrate with you and come along with a widow’s mite: some food stuffs and beverages.

“I also bring you good tidings, my next three-month salaries will be donated to this orphanage for your care,” Egunjobi told his hosts at the orphanage.

He promised to rededicate himself to the service of Agege community saying, " I was born and bred in Agege and i will give my best to ensure that under my watch Agege's stock rise."

Lagos Speaker Obasa Greets Tinubu At 65, Says He's Architect Of Modern Lagos

Lagos Speaker Obasa Greets Tinubu At 65, Says He's Architect Of Modern Lagos

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has saluted the courage, determination, commitment and the will to succeed despite all odds of the former Governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Rt. Hon. Obasa stated this in his message to celebrate the 65th birthday anniversary of the former Governor. The statement was signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Musbau Razak.

Describing Tinubu as the architect of modern Lagos, Obasa stated that the ingenuity of the former Governor has turned the state once regarded as the dirtiest in the country to not only the cleanest but that has also achieved a mega city status.

"He's not only the architect of modern Lagos, he's also a great leader of men whose unrivalled ability to discover talent has led to the discovery of great leaders who have turned out to become reference point in great leadership and good governance in the present democratic dispensation in the country," the Lagos Assembly Speaker said.

Obasa stated further that Asiwaju Tinubu will continue to remain relevant and the main reference point in Nigerian politics forever because of his selfless and humane nature which centre on the development of man in particular and the nation in general.

"His love for the common man knows no bound and his passion for the development and growth of this great country makes him arguably Nigeria's greatest politician of the present political dispensation," he said.

He concluded saying, "on behalf of other members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, I greet our leader and wish him more years of celebration in good health and wisdom".

We Have A Master Plan To Give Agege Facelift – Dr. Adejare, Commissioner for Environment

Recently, AgegePulse had an exclusive interview with the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Samuel Adejare at his Agege residence. Below is an excerpt from the interview:

“Growing up in the heart of Ebute Meta was quite interesting under the tutelage of my God sent guardian/mother, Chief Mrs. Iyabode Oduwole of blessed memory. She was the architect of everything you see in me today. My only regret in life is the fact that she is not alive today to witness how her mentorship regime served as the solid foundation for my success in life (Dr. Adejare weeps). Our mandate from Mr. Governor is to ensure a clean and flood free environment that is conducive for all. Part of it is to plant 10million trees by 2020. We’ve grown about 7million trees as at today, we are sure of surpassing our target by 2020. We urge every individual to imbibe the culture of planting a tree to mark important days (birthday, wedding, anniversary, e.t.c) in their lives. This will aid our resolve for a greener environment.
The monthly Environmental Sanitation was cancelled because we were convinced that shutting down Lagos for 3hrs of every last Saturday of the month is a disgrace to us, cleaning our environment should be our way of life. We will embark on viral sensitization and education of our people on the need to be mindful of the importance of a clean environment. Our blueprint for Lagos environment will cater for the nooks and crannies of the state.

Talking about Agege, Hon. Adejare said; “We have a master plan for Agege and Governor Ambode is very interested in it. In terms of flood in Agege and Orile Agege, there are plans to start a massive drainage system in areas like Akilo, Alaagba, Pero, Papa, Agbotikuyo, Dopemu amongst others to address flooding and environmental issues in the area. Before the end of this administration, the railway area of Agege will also witness massive facelift. They are all in our plans and our working Governor has keyed into it.”
On why he dumped Medicine for Politics, he said; “A typical doctor is a politician, the study of Medicine is to make people comfortable and Politics is to take good governance to the people with quality representation while ensuring people live comfortably. Medicine and Politics are interwoven in terms of end result. As a medical student, I represented the department all through my six years in school.”

Watch out for the full interview in the next edition of Agegepulse Magazine.
