Sanwo-Olu commends Market Leaders on Hygiene and Sanitation in Markets

Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu has applauded the efforts of Market Leaders in the State for ensuring hygiene in markets and strict adherence to standard practices in the State, stating that this result has been possible because of the unrelenting efforts of the Iyaloja/President-General; Chief Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, who has continued to engage Market Leaders across the State on best practices in markets.

The First-Lady disclosed this today during a one-day seminar on Market Sanitation and Security for Market Leaders in Lagos East Senatorial District, held at the Babajide Sanwo-Olu International Model Market, Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area.

While thanking facilitators who have continued to educate market stakeholders on improved ways to transform waste to wealth and how to safeguard their health, lives and properties; Dr Sanwo-Olu urged market leaders in the state to harness technology to develop market operations and ensure proper waste management and hygiene towards a sustainable environment. 

She harped on the numerous benefits that technology in market places offer and how it would enhance markets to function optimally, reiterating the State Government’s commitment to enhance market security and sanitation in the State through community-based associations, which would aid in achieving the T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus agenda of Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

"Harnessing technology is another key aspect of improving market operations. Tools like CCTVs, public address systems, and digital platforms, including social media, can enhance waste management, public health, and security in our markets. We started this sensitisation through the five divisions of the stage and we are moving through the Senatorial District and after the Lagos West District, we shall move to the Community Development Associations CDAs to engage them on this cause" she said.

She added that markets are the lifeblood of economy and they offer essential goods and services to the people; which the administration of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu recognizes and is positioned to leverage on its’ bid to achieve the vision of making Lagos a 21st-Century Economy.

She emphasised that markets present challenges, particularly in terms of environmental and health risks, noting that addressing those challenges is essential to safeguarding the well-being of market users, the economy, and the environment.

The First-Lady who also emphasised the need to be security conscious in the markets urged market leaders to develop effective strategies, provide training on best practices, and educate stakeholders on identifying and reporting potential threats to market safety particularly during this yuletide season.

"As we are already in the festive season, I urge all stakeholders to collaborate with government agencies to prevent fire outbreaks and other mishaps; as Government remains committed to supporting markets by investing in infrastructure, providing training, and promoting initiatives that foster growth and development."

She however called on all market stakeholders to join hands with the State Government in creating markets that are clean, safe, and prosperous as the efforts will position Lagos as a model for sustainable development and economic growth.

Also speaking at the event, Wife of the Deputy Governor; Mrs Oluremi Hamzat, commended the efforts of Iyaloja and President-General; Chief Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo for ensuring that Markets in Lagos State comply with the policies of the State on safety and hygiene.

She however urged market leaders to continue to maintain hygienic practices in the State so as to set Lagos State as an exemplary model for other states.

In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development; Mr Bolaji Robert, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary; Mrs Kikelomo Bolarinwa iterated that the sanitation programme was designed to address the path to improving waste management and public health in market places, and how to consolidate on this as a recipe for economic growth.

He said "Markets can also be vulnerable to health threats if wastes from these markets are not properly disposed and this is why we must collectively take up the responsibility of disposing our wastes properly. 

"Let us for this reason ensure that produce and wares from our markets are kept in best hygienic conditions, especially by bagging our waste and ensuring they are disposed in the containers provided by LAWMA."

Also speaking at the event, the Iyaloja/President -General, Association of Commodity Men and Women of Nigeria, Chief Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo enjoined market leaders to take priority of their hygiene by ensuring that market places are kept clean at all times.

The Executive Chairman of Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area, Mrs Samiat Bada restated the commitment of her administration to consistently support the initiative of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu aimed at repositioning markets in the area and ensuring cleaner environment.

Resource persons took turns to sensitise participants on topical issues which include Fire Prevention and Safety in Markets, Health Talks, Information Management in the Market, Drug Abuse among others.

Present at the event were Traditional Rulers, Security Operatives, Market-Leaders, Community Leaders, NYSC-members amongst others.

2024 Lagos Boat Regatta: Lagos Will Explore More Tourism Opportunities On Waterways, Says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday said his government will continue to explore waterways to develop a strong ecosystem for tourism and further expand the transportation system in the State.

He said his administration is committed to unlocking tourism potential to further grow the economy of the State.

Governor Sanwo-Olu spoke on Saturday during the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta with the theme "Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life," held at Victoria Island and across various locations in the five divisions of the State—Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Epe. 

He said the Lagos Boat Regatta is a demonstration of what Lagos stands for and a transformation and revival of culture, noting that the idea is a shared vision for showcasing the beauty of Lagos State water tourism potential for the enjoyment of residents.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who embarked on a boat ride with his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and some State Executive Council members, urged Lagosians to take advantage of the opportunity to unwind and be entertained as they enjoy the ambience of the Boat Regatta, sight and sound of the state.

He said: "We are indeed excited that we can finally have a boat regatta, the beginning of what will be a lot of activities that are going to happen during this yuletide season. It is a demonstration of our commitment to developing tourism potential in Lagos.

"You know one third of Lagos is surrounded by water. So, we need to be able to use our waterways not only as a means of transportation but as a strong ecosystem for tourism, and today you will be seeing displays of various sizes of water infrastructure and displays of boat regattas from the five divisions of Lagos.

"It is going to be a day and afternoon of sheer tourism, fun, and understanding the beauty of the waterways of Lagos looks like. Let us relax, sit back, and enjoy the beauty of the serenity and tourism potential of the state and the hospitality of Lagos."

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, said the Lagos Boat Regatta 2024 was aimed to immerse participants in the rich culture of the state's waterway.

Benson-Awoyinka said the event serves as a driver of economic growth to boost tourism and create opportunities for local businesses, and it further cements Lagos’ reputation as a premier global destination.

The Commissioner said the event highlighted the vibrant community heritage and sustainability practices through an engaging as well as multi-sensory experience weaving together parades, dance performances, and innovative space layouts with captivating images.

She said: "This year's theme, 'Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,' underscores the integral role our waterways play in shaping our history and identity as Lagosians. The Regatta is not only a showcase of our vibrant traditions but also a testament to our shared commitment to fostering tourism, cultural pride, and unity.

Nigeria Health Watch Strengthens Battle Against Health Misinformation

Nigeria Health Watch, a prominent health advocacy and communication organization, is steadfastly bridging the gap between evidence and action to enhance health outcomes across Nigeria. In a recent press release following the global graduation ceremony of their fellows, they highlighted a pressing issue: the rise of health misinformation. Such misinformation has increasingly threatened public health, leading to misguided decisions, vaccine hesitancy, and eroded trust in healthcare systems and professionals.

Since the launch of its fellowship program to tackle health misinformation in 2023, Nigeria Health Watch has collaborated with a diverse range of stakeholders. They have successfully completed the second and third tracks of this program, empowering key players such as social media influencers, creatives, bloggers, along with healthcare professionals like nurses, midwives, traditional birth attendants, community pharmacists, and health educators. The goal is to provide these stakeholders with tools to effectively counter misinformation, promote evidence-based health narratives, and foster public trust.

The Fellowship consists of three interconnected tracks:

1. **Health Misinformation Management Fellowship:** Trains influencers, bloggers, and creatives to create accurate and engaging health content while combating false information online.

2. **Health Workers Misinformation Fellowship:** Enhances skills among healthcare providers to identify, address, and mitigate misinformation in their networks.

3. **Lagos State Health Educators Fellowship:** Focuses on Health Promotion Officers in Lagos to drive community engagement and grassroots mobilization against misinformation.

#### Key Achievements

- **Content Creation and Digital Engagement:** Fellows produced over 168 health-focused content pieces, gaining more than 56,000 views and nearly 63,000 interactions.

- **Community Outreach:** Participants organized grassroots educational campaigns, visiting schools, communities, and healthcare facilities.

- **Lagos Community Impact:** Health Promotion Officers in three Lagos districts developed district-specific action plans and utilized local expertise for sustainable impact.

- **Behavioral and Knowledge Shifts:** A 31% increase in audience understanding of misinformation was achieved.

The fellowship used a hybrid model with in-person sessions, virtual workshops, and hands-on activities, all anchored in adult learning principles for practical application.

During the program’s opening, Nigeria Health Watch’s Managing Director, Vivianne Ihekweazu, emphasized the importance of collective efforts to combat misinformation and amplify credible information. 

“This fellowship is not just a program; it is a movement," Ihekweazu stated. "Today, we celebrate our fellows who are now equipped to play a vital role in addressing health misinformation and fostering trust."

At the graduation ceremony, social media influencer Stephanie Omoarebun highlighted the fellowship’s critical role in empowering communities with accurate information. 

“We are proud to have contributed to advancing accurate health information. It’s a responsibility we carry with pride and commitment,” she stated.

In her keynote, Fatou Wurie stressed that trust is the most potent tool to influence public health positively. “Trust, once it is built, is stronger than fear,” she remarked.

The event culminated with the announcement of the Health Information Disorder Management Network. This initiative, led by the Director of Programmes, Dr. Kemisola Agbaoye, aims to sustain the fellowship’s efforts by facilitating collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing to promote accurate health communication on a larger scale. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Architect Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, alongside the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Housing and Habitat, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has extolled the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his administration’s unwavering dedication to housing and real estate development in Lagos and Nigeria at Large.

The commendations were made during the fifth Lagos Real Estate Marketplace Conference and Exhibition, held  for two days Tuesday and Wednesday in Lagos, where stakeholders in housing and urban development convened to discuss progress and challenges in providing affordable housing and sustainable urban infrastructure across Nigeria.

In his remarks, Architect Dangiwa pledged the Federal Government's unwavering support to Lagos State in harnessing its immense potential as Nigeria’s economic epicentre and real estate hub. 

He emphasised the importance of collaboration and partnerships to address critical areas such as regulatory alignment in land administration. This, he noted, would eliminate bottlenecks, enhance investor confidence, and pave the way for green and smart housing developments.

“Through harmonized efforts, we are committed to reducing barriers that hinder growth while fostering an environment conducive to innovative construction practices, optimising the housing value chain, and empowering local artisans and industries”, Dangiwa said.

“Our collaboration with Lagos State will be instrumental in reimagining its real estate landscape to meet global standards. Together, we can create housing solutions that not only address present challenges but also lay a foundation for future generations”, he added.

Similarly, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin applauded the State’s commitment to fostering a robust real estate environment that caters to various economic classes.

“The Governor’s initiatives demonstrate the importance of leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the people, especially in critical areas like housing”, Jibrin remarked.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, also lauded the Lagos State Government for its efforts in ensuring accessible and affordable housing for its residents. He emphasised the pivotal role housing plays in national development and commended Lagos as a trailblazer in urban development.

During his remarks, the Ooni requested a standing ovation for the Governor on two occasions, acknowledging his remarkable efforts in the real estate sector.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration has been at the forefront of housing initiatives, including the commissioning of several affordable housing projects across the state. These projects aim to reduce the housing deficit and promote sustainable urban development”, Oba Ogunwusi said.

He urged other states to emulate Lagos’ commitment to housing development, recognising it as a critical driver of economic growth and social stability.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday said his administration is committed to creating an ecosystem that supports the economic growth of the State through real estate, which plays a critical role in the development and growth of Lagos.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, disclosed that the State is set to introduce an integrated, effective and efficient waste management system in collaboration with international partners. 

The Governor and other stakeholders spoke on Tuesday at the 5th Lagos Real Estate Marketplace Conference and Exhibitions held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. 

The conference is an avenue created by the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) to provide an enabling environment and transparent platform for stakeholders in the real estate sector. 

Speaking during the conference, Governor Sanwo-Olu said his administration is committed to building a thriving real estate sector.

He said, "As a government, we remain steadfast in our efforts to building a thriving real estate sector by prioritising human capital development, to ensure we have skilled professionals capable of driving innovation. We are equally committed to establishing sustainable regulations that protect practitioners and consumers alike while fostering an integrated ecosystem that links housing development with transportation, technology, agriculture, health, and youth development.

"We consistently draw inspiration from global trends and best practices to inform our policies and programs. Today’s distinguished speakers, moderators, and panellists bring invaluable insights, and we are confident that their contributions will enrich our collective vision for the real estate sector.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also disclosed his administration's commitment to collaboration and progress in the real estate sector is yielding positive results. 

He said his administration, based on the recommendations from the 4th Marketplace held in 2023, has made considerable strides in establishing a comprehensive developer database to enhance transparency, reducing bureaucracy in development permits to streamline processes, and implementing various measures to improve safety and consumer protection.

"Our ongoing initiatives reflect our determination to integrate sustainability into every facet of real estate development. From investing in renewable energy to advancing intermodal transportation systems, promoting technology-driven urban planning, and delivering sustainable housing solutions, we are laying the groundwork for a Lagos that balances economic growth with environmental responsibility and social equity. 

"Achieving a sustainable future is not a task for the government alone—it requires collective action. Public-private collaboration is critical for driving innovation, financing sustainable projects, and creating inclusive regulations. It also ensures that opportunities for growth and contribution are accessible to all, including women, youth, and marginalised communities.

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, said the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration has strengthened its framework to ensure sustainable urban development and will ensure continuous policies and upgrades of existing laws while also increasing enforcement and capacity building. 

"As we re-imagine Lagos, let us commit to embracing and strengthening the regulatory frameworks that will guide us toward a resilient, inclusive, and vibrant city.

"Every architect, developer, financier, policymaker and citizen has a role to play in this journey. Together, we can create a Lagos where progress meets purpose and development respects the delicate balance of nature and community," he said. 

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Barr. Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, described the event as an assembly of experts to drive sustainable growth, innovation, inclusivity, and sustainable development practices. She called for collaboration between the public and private sectors towards ensuring resilient physical landscapes for Lagos State.

Odunuga-Bakare said the real estate sector remains a significant pillar of Lagos State’s socio-economic development, providing employment opportunities, enhancing urban infrastructure, and driving economic growth. 

She said the Lagos State Government has strengthened its regulatory frameworks through enhanced building codes, disaster-resilient urban planning, and initiatives to promote the use of sustainable building materials and technologies.

The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture has announced that the highly anticipated Lagos Boat Regatta 2024 will now take place on December 21, 2024. Initially scheduled for the Easter period, the event was postponed to ensure optimal participation and provide an elevated experience for all attendees.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to making the Lagos Boat Regatta a spectacular celebration of Lagos' rich aquatic heritage. “The postponement has given us the opportunity to enhance the programme and deliver a bigger, better, and more inclusive event”, the Commissioner remarked.

The Lagos Boat Regatta promises to be an unforgettable occasion for Lagosians and visitors alike. It will showcase the vibrant aquatic life and cultural diversity of Lagos while reinforcing the State’s position as a premier tourism destination in Africa.

CyberCrime: Police Arraign 113 Foreign Nationals, Reaffirms Capacity for Tackling Crime

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun., Ph.D., NPM., has reaffirmed the capabilities and expertise of the Nigeria Police Force in tackling cybercrimes and protecting cyberspace in Nigeria and beyond.

CyberCrime: Police Arraign 113 Foreign Nationals, Reaffirms Capacity for Tackling Crime

The IGP made this known while commending the Police operatives attached to Zone 7 command and the National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) Abuja for bursting a group of foreign Nationals involved in a series of cybercrimes including internet fraud and marketing scams

The suspects were arrested on the 3rd of November 2024 in Jahi, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). During investigation, operatives of the NPF-NCCC recovered a vast array of digital critical evidence, believed to be instrumental in the syndicate’s cybercrime operations. The recovered items include 1 Black Toyota Tundra vehicle, laptops of different makes, smartphones of various brands, tablets, desktops, computers and keyboards, Harman/Kardon sound system, MTN routers, Huawei routers, Airtel routers, D-Link routers, Starlink routers, Gamepads, 1 Sony PlayStation 5, a central processing unit, Multiple SIM cards from both local international service Providers, High-capacity servers, Drones and specialized cyber equipment, international passports, identity cards, and travel documents.

These assets recovered are suspected to have been used in executing a range of cybercrime activities, including unauthorized data breaches, marketing scams and other cybercrime activities. The scale and sophistication of the operation underscores the increasing global threat posed by cybercriminal syndicates operating across borders.

As a follow-up to the investigation and recoveries, compiled with credible evidence against the suspects, the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC), has arraigned the 113 foreign nationals facing serious charges, including computer-related fraud, unlawful access to data, marketing scams, money laundering, conspiracy, and illegal immigration, before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

The arraignment of these suspects follows extensive investigations that have uncovered the alleged involvement of these individuals in criminal activities spanning both cybercrime, immigration offences and human trafficking networks.

The Nigeria Police Force will continue to work closely with international law enforcement agencies and Embassies to track and prosecute cybercriminals, combat cybercrime and other forms of transnational criminal activity and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable under Nigerian law.

Lagos to Host 18th Edition of Culturati Festival ‘Freedom Edition

Lagos State is set to host the 18th edition of the renowned Culturati Festival, themed “Freedom Edition”, at Freedom Park, Broad Street, Lagos Island. This grand cultural event will run from December 5 to December 7, 2024, showcasing a vibrant fusion of African art, culture, and innovation. Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu will serve as the Chief Host, while Idris Aregbe, the festival’s initiator and Lagos State Special Adviser on Culture and Tourism, will lead the celebrations.

The festival kicks off on December 5 with the Culturati Marketplace, an exclusive trade fair showcasing 100 SMEs from the from art, crafts, food, tourism and creativity economy. This initiative will boost Lagos' economy and provide businesses with visibility, fostering collaborations with investors and dignitaries.

On December 6, the Taste of Africa Lagos will tantalize attendees with authentic African cuisine, followed by the Culturati Festival and a dazzling Fashion Show. These events will celebrate African heritage through music, storytelling, and fashion, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity.

The event culminates on December 7 with the Gala and Award Night, honouring individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to cultural preservation and innovation. The evening promises elegance, entertainment, and recognition of Africa’s rich heritage.

Culturati, Africa’s leading cultural fusion platform, goes beyond entertainment by empowering youth through its academy, which has trained over 10,000 individuals in creative and digital skills. This year’s festival will also launch the Culturati Community Library, promoting literacy and cultural education.
