Breaking: Lagos Assembly Passes N3.4 Trn Budget For 2025

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday approved a total sum of N3,366,815,224,144 as the total budget of the state for 2025.

The approval followed the presentation of a report on the budget by the chairman of the joint committee on appropriation and finance, Hon. Sa'ad Olumoh, and the subsequent voice votes by lawmakers at a sitting presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.

The approved budget is made of N1,295,630,197,452 as recurrent expenditure while N2,071,185,026,692 is earmarked as capital expenditure for the year ending December 31, 2025.

Dr. Obasa, thereafter, directed the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to transmit a clean copy of the passed bill to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for assent.

The Speaker commended his colleagues for their painstaking efforts leading to the passage of the budget.

Recall that Governor Sanwo-Olu had on November 21, presented a proposal of N3.005 trillion to the House for approval.

The Governor, during the presentation, told the lawmakers that the budget has a deficit financing of N408,902 billion adding that the deficit would be financed from external and internal loans and bonds.

Meanwhile, the House, during plenary on Monday, also passed a bill to consolidate all laws on local government administration in Lagos State.

The bill further makes provisions based on constitutional amendments as well as amendments by the National Assembly which have direct effects on the local governments in Lagos State.

Initially scheduled for the Easter period, the event was postponed to ensure optimal participation and provide an elevated experience for all attendees.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to making the Lagos Boat Regatta a spectacular celebration of Lagos' rich aquatic heritage. “The postponement has given us the opportunity to enhance the programme and deliver a bigger, better, and more inclusive event”, the Commissioner remarked.

The Lagos Boat Regatta promises to be an unforgettable occasion for Lagosians and visitors alike. It will showcase the vibrant aquatic life and cultural diversity of Lagos while reinforcing the State’s position as a premier tourism destination in Africa.

The Honourable Commissioner highlighted that this year’s event will focus on engaging the local fishing communities, spotlighting their cultural contributions, and exploring ways the Regatta can provide economic benefits to them. 

Furthermore, she averred that the Regatta serves as a platform to promote the scenic beaches and the thriving hospitality sector around Lagos' waters.

Participants from the five IBILE divisions of Lagos State will compete in various categories, with exciting prizes up for grabs. Additionally, private boat owners will have the chance to display their creativity, adding a distinct Lagos flair to the event.

Lagos State is set to host the 18th edition of the renowned Culturati Festival, themed “Freedom Edition”, at Freedom Park, Broad Street, Lagos Island. This grand cultural event will run from December 5 to December 7, 2024, showcasing a vibrant fusion of African art, culture, and innovation. Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu will serve as the Chief Host, while Idris Aregbe, the festival’s initiator and Lagos State Special Adviser on Culture and Tourism, will lead the celebrations.

The festival kicks off on December 5 with the Culturati Marketplace, an exclusive trade fair showcasing 100 SMEs from the from art, crafts, food, tourism and creativity economy. A high-level delegation from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development on Monday, 18th November 2024, led by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Local Government and Rural Development, Mr. Babatunde Durojaiye visited two care centres for the underprivileged children. The delegation donated food and other essential supplies in commemoration of the 2024 Community Day celebration, scheduled for Thursday, 21st November 2024.

In his statement during the visit, Mr. Durojaiye highlighted the Lagos State Government’s unwavering commitment to supporting children with special needs.

 “This visit underscores the government’s dedication to uplifting vulnerable members of society and reflects our shared responsibility as a community to provide care and support for all,” the statement read.

The visit also set the tone for the forthcoming Annual Community Day Celebration, which promotes unity, compassion, and development across all sectors of the community. Mr. Durojaiye emphasized, “This initiative exemplifies the Lagos State Government’s commitment to social responsibility and aligns with its broader objective of creating an inclusive and thriving society where no one is left behind.”

The delegation commenced their outreach at the House of Chloe Orphanage in Ikorodu, where they were warmly welcomed by staff and children.

As Lagos joined other Internationals to celebrate World Tourism Day 2024,  the Hon. Commissar for Tourism, Art & Culture, Hon. Toke-Benson Awoyinka has highlighted the vital role of this sector in fostering peace and understanding between nations and cultures in supporting reconciliation processes in Nation Building.

The Lead discussants, Oniru of Irulans,  HRM Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal in his presentation highlighted the important role tourism had played in Nation Building.

Oba Oniruland said, "Indeed, it is my pleasure to speak on the theme of the World Tourism Day – 2024, i.e.  "Tourism and Peace". Global peace and harmonious co-existence of the peoples of this world are profoundly pivotal as we strive for a more prosperous world. 

"Today, I will explore the intricate relationship between tourism and peace through the lens of Paul Collier’s theory on conflict and peace. Tourism, when harnessed responsibly, can be a powerful catalyst for peace, bridging divides and promoting harmonious coexistence. Additionally, I will share personal experiences from the Iru Kingdom; discuss how tourism can be a tool for conflict resolution and cultural understanding; present successful tourism initiatives from the Iru Kingdom, and conduct a comparative analysis of the cities of Lagos and Istanbul. 

Sighting the Paul Collier’s Theory on Conflict & Peace, Oba Oniru, said, Paul Collier - a renowned development economist - has extensively studied the dynamics of conflict and peace. His theory posits that economic opportunities and development are fundamental to preventing conflicts. Collier emphasizes that poverty and lack of economic opportunities create fertile ground for conflict. Conversely, economic growth, fueled by sectors such as tourism, can promote peace by providing jobs and improving living standards.

"Collier’s theory also highlights the importance of inclusive economic development. When economic benefits are equitably distributed, it reduces grievances that can lead to conflict. Tourism, with its potential to create jobs and spur local economies, plays a crucial role in this inclusive development.

"The major  Importance of Peace in Tourism is fostering the economic growth is well-documented and cannot be overstated. Globally, it contributes 9.8% of GDP and 7% of total exports (World Tourism Organization). I believe that strategic investments in the tourism sector can help mitigate risks of poverty and unemployment; by creating jobs, stimulating infrastructure development, and promoting cross-cultural understanding, tourism can address the root causes of conflict and chart a path towards lasting peace and inclusive economic development. 

Relating the Relationship between Tourism and Peace, Tourism can foster peace by promoting cross-cultural understanding and people-to-people diplomacy. Travelers learn about local customs, traditions, and ways of life, breaking down stereotypes and misconceptions,  Tourism can contribute to peace by generating economic benefits, creating jobs, and reducing poverty. This can help alleviate tensions and conflicts driven by economic instability. Tourism can support peace processes by promoting dialogue and cooperation among conflicting parties.

"Promoting Peace through Cultural Heritage & Tourism in Iru Kingdom,  Iru-land, which encompasses the entire Victoria Island, the Lagos Marina lands abutting the Five Cowries Creek and the several indigenous villages and ancestral communities of (such as Igbosere, Falomo, Itirin, Mosafejo, Apapa-Eleko, Ipehun, etc) of Lagos State, boasts a rich cultural heritage that has been instrumental in fostering peace and unity. Parents Protest Boarding Fees Increase from N35,000 to N100,000 in Lagos

Some parents of students of Oriwu Model College in Ikorodu on Sunday protested the sudden increase of boarding fees by the Lagos state government.

The parents who carried out the peaceful protest at the gate of the college demanded the immediate reversal of the boarding fees which was increased from N35,000 to N100,000.

Kazeem Oladuni, chairman, Parent Forum Association (PFA), Oriwu College, appealed to the state ministry of education to reverse the increment to enable their wards resume school.

“Our children were supposed to resume on Sept. 9; then we received a memo that one week has been added, which expired today, Sept.15.

“To our surprise, another memo came out on Sept. 13, indicating that the boarding fees have been increased from N35,000 to N100,000

“We held a meeting with Lagos State Coordination of PFA and resolved that the fees are outrageous for any parent at this time of hardship in the country,” he said.

Also, Adedoyin Badmus, who spoke on behalf of parents in the Igbogbo Area, Ikorodu, said education was supposed to be free.

Mr Badmus, however, said the government was making it difficult for the children of many average Nigerians to acquire education with the sudden and astronomical increase in boarding fees.

Similarly, another parent, Mary Enaayi, appealed to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to consider the plights of many parents who are petty traders and struggle to ensure that their children access quality education.

Ms Enaayi urged the state government to urgently reverse the fees to allow dividends of democracy to cut across all strata of society.

“I am appealing to LASG to consider that some parents are traders, but because they want their children to have quality education, that is why they registered them as boarders.

“With this outrageous amount, the careers of those wards will be shattered because their parents can not afford to pay the N100,000.

“Some have two or three children in the school, which means they have to withdraw due to the sudden increment,” she said.

The parents carried placards with inscriptions like; ‘No reduction, No resumption’, ‘We need free education’, ‘Our government is wicked’, ‘N35,000 to N100,000 is too outrageous’, among others.

Lagos holds Interactive Session with Community Media Practitioners

Lagos State Government on Friday, August 28, 2024 has charged community media practitioners to be objective with their roles as information gatekeepers when dissemination news to the publics at the grassroots.

SSA to the Governor on Local Government and Rural Development; Mr Babatunde Durojaiye gave this charge while delivering his keynote address during an interactive session with community media practitioners at the State Secretariat earlier today.

Mr Durojaiye iterated that the interactive session is targeted towards equipping Community Media Practitioners with requisite knowledge on grassroots information dissemination that will foster goodwill for this administration, especially in projecting the policies, programmes and achievements of the Sanwo-Olu led Administration, implemented through the T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus Agenda.

He harped on the crucial role community media practitioners play in ensuring that the masses are properly informed on the programmes and policies of the Government and how they can benefit from it. This, he said, is the major gatekeeping role that community media practitioners should perform.

He added that the role of the community media practitioner is crucial in shaping the mindset of the people about their government, hence the need for them to always ensure that the publics are exposed to the numerous projects and policies being executed by the Government both in rural and urban areas, and should also ensure that Government is made aware of the plights and needs of the people.

He stressed that the administration of Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has continued to invest into critical infrastructure needed in communities across the State and has also been providing grants and loans targeted majorly to rural dwellers who are into small and medium scale businesses in their communities.

“This is why it behoves on you as community media practitioners, who are information gatekeepers between the Government and the people at the grassroots to ensure policies and programmes of the Government that would benefit the people at the grassroots is properly disseminated to them, while also serving as a feedback medium for the Government”. He said.

Similarly, the Assistant Director, Public Affairs in the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development; Mr Kehinde Adebayo, while delivering his welcome address, thanked Mr Governor for approving the Interactive Session since his assumption into office.

He stated that Interactive session such as this affords the Ministry the opportunity to have periodic interface with Community Media Practitioners, thereby creating a platform where these practitioners can be properly informed on the numerous projects the administration of Mr Governor has executed across the State.

Adebayo also stressed on the integral role community media practitioners play in a State like Lagos, adding that the role of an information gatekeeper is a privileged role that must be performed with integrity.

“While performing this role, we must ensure we are transparent about our biases and conflicts of interest, and ensure we do not use it to paint Government in a bad light or create agitations in our Communities. As an unbiased Gatekeeper, we need to be accountable to our communities, as well as the Government by ensuring we amplify the voices of those who need to be heard and douse the voices that can cause anarchy in the society”. He said.

Publisher of the Lead Lagos Community Newspaper in Amuwo-Odofin; Adejumo Abayomi, while speaking on behalf of the participants, applauded the administration of Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for the continued inclusion of Community Media in information dissemination channels of the State.

He assured that Community Media Practitioners would continue to project the policies, programmes and the achievements of this administration across the 57 Councils of the State.

The interactive session which is the third of its kind since the inception of the administration of Mr Governor was well attended by seasoned facilitators and community media practitioners across the 57 Councils of the State.

"Resume Healthy with Academic Excellence”, As Dr. Sola Pitan Holds Medical Outreach For 2500 School children In Lagos

Orile Agege General Hospital (OAGH) has organized Y2024 Back-to-School Medical Outreach 2024/2025 academic session resumption for 2500 school children in Lagos

The Medical Director/CEO of OAGH.  Dr. Sola Pitan disclosed this during the commencement of the week-long Back-To-school Medical Outreach held recently at the facility, stressing that the programme was initiated to meet the school-health needs of children within the Orile Agege community ahead of the school resumption. The initiative is the third edition and is themed: “Resume Healthy: Academic Excellence”, with a target of 2500 school children.

 “The programme was designed to ensure a healthy life that enhances children’s learning between ages five and 15 during the school year. The children will go through pediatrics, evaluation, eye, ear, dental checks, nutrition/diabetes and social welfare services. The various screening will help detect potential health problems and improve the overall health of the children", he stated.

The programme, he said, started in 2022 and it has been increasing by the year with the number of children and partners as more people in the community now trust the government hospitals with their health care, as such they come along with their children.

The Medical Director added that the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led government recognised OAGH’s growth and designated the hospital as one of the government-owned facilities to start training medical house officers.

He said, “We have got accommodation for them; we are ready and waiting for the visit of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to come and accredit us. We thank the Governor for helping us to achieve that status. Our theatre used to be two but it’s now a four-suite theatre; we have also been able to expand the hospital services", Pitan said. 

This, according to him, is a testament to the good works that Governor Sanwo-Olu and all the health care providers are doing. All the training, capacity development, and every other tool and support are instrumental to the hospital's achievements as well as the support of the community. 

Dr. Pitan said OAGH is giving its best to the community to achieve the state government's desire to increase further access to healthcare delivery within and outside Orile Agege.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Hospital Service Commission (HSC), Dr. Benjamin Eniayewun lauded the hospital for championing the well-being of children in the state through its health initiative.

He said:  “What we have on ground is best described with ‘The fact speaks for itself’, I can only say that this is the way to go. Prevention is sometimes better than cure; health promotion is the way to go, and there is so much we can do in this space before people fall sick, they’ll toe the wellness line”.

Also speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, Hon. Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi ably represented by his vice Chairman, Hon. Oluwagbenga Abiola Agbelebu, said schools pupils are wonderful children of God that nothing is too much for the quality upbring of those children.

Hon. Abiola who hailed Dr. Pitan for the first of His kinds initiative to ensure School pupils enjoyed quality medical services that sharpened their knowledge and academic excellence.

As a government, "we will ensure the prioritization of excellent service delivery to our school pupils to enhance their quality performance in their academic and curricular activities". Abiola concluded.

Many Injured As BRT Bus Tumbles At Iyana Ipaja, Lagos

A fully loaded high-capacity Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle overturned inside the dedicated BRT lane at Iyana Ipaja, Lagos, resulting in injuries to 10 passengers.

According to an update from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident occurred shortly after the bus had departed from the BRT park at Iyana Ipaja.

While giving an update on social media, the agency said the bus ran into an abandoned pedestrian bridge foot immediately after the Iyana Ipaja bridge, causing it to tip over onto its side.

The authorities have confirmed that all 10 victims have received necessary medical attention.

LASTMA officials were quickly on the scene to manage the situation and ensure that the victims were promptly taken care of.

The accident has caused significant disruption to traffic in the area, with efforts underway to clear the lane and restore normal traffic flow.

Motorists and commuters are advised to exercise caution and follow traffic directives as authorities work to resolve the situation

… Reiterates Commitment to Promote Indigenous Tradition, Heritage

In a bid to promote and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the state, Lagos State joined other South-West states in celebrating Isese Day, observed on August 20th, in line with the United Nations' World Traditional Religion Day.

Isese Day is a significant celebration of the Yoruba religion, which encompasses the traditional spiritual beliefs and practices of the Yoruba people, predominantly found in southwestern Nigeria, including Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Kwara, and parts of Kogi State.

To commemorate this occasion, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe led a delegation from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, along with the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, to visit Obas and traditional leaders across the state.

During the visit, Mr. Aregbe congratulated the Obas and urged them to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and stability in the state and the country at large. He emphasised the importance of preserving cultural heritage and promoting indigenous traditions, highlighting the government's commitment to supporting traditional institutions.

Aregbe said that the state government also enjoined the traditional worshippers to celebrate in moderation and respect the rights of others, ensuring that the culture of religious tolerance in the state is upheld.

As part of the festivities, the Special Adviser joined celebrations at the Palace of His Royal Majesty, Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos. 

The revered Monarch shared words of wisdom with adherents who gathered at the palace to celebrate with him, urging everyone to embrace truth and patience and to pray for divine guidance for our leaders. He emphasised the importance of respect, understanding, and spiritual growth, advocating for prayers and support for leaders to foster a more harmonious and progressive society.

Mr. Aregbe’s visit to the palace was a significant moment in the Isese Day celebrations, highlighting the collaboration and mutual respect between traditional institutions and the government.

The Special Adviser also visited the palace of the Oniru of Iru Land, Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, who commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for approving Isese Day as a public holiday, allowing workers to celebrate Yoruba culture and heritage. Oba Lawal pledged that traditional rulers would continue educating the youth about Lagos' culture and heritage and presented a publication on the history of Iru Land, along with a Quarterly Gazette, to the Special Adviser.

Oba Lawal also noted that the Iru Kingdom had begun consultations and appeasement of the gods, particularly Olokun Aje at the beachside, for peace, progress, and unity in the community, Lagos State, and Nigeria earlier in the day.

The celebration is a testament to the Lagos State Government's dedication to promoting, propagating, and preserving the state's rich cultural heritage. It featured various cultural parades by different traditional groups, prayers, music, and dance.

By joining other South-West states in observing Isese Day, the Lagos State Government aims to foster a sense of unity and shared identity among the Yoruba people and other traditional communities, enhancing the preservation of cultural heritage.

Lagos State Task Force has taken critical steps to curb the escalating challenges posed by roadside vendors and the proliferation of shanties along Mile 2 - Oke on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. This swift action is part of the planned programmes of the Chairman of the Agency, CSP Adetayo Akerele to protect and preserve the environment in line with the THEMES Plus Agenda of the State Government. 

In recent months, the stretch of road along Mile 2 - Oke has been plagued by illegal roadside activities that have contributed to severe traffic congestion, an alarming rise in traffic-related robberies, and an overall degradation of the environment. The spread of shanties has not only affected the free flow of traffic on that route but has also become a breeding ground for criminal activities, putting the lives and properties of motorists and commuters at risk.

The Lagos State Taskforce, acting on the directives of the State Government and Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade has moved swiftly to dismantle these illegal structures and clear the area of vendors selling goods by the roadside. 

The Chairman disclosed that the roadside vendors who set up tents on the kerbs are also known to deal illegally in petroleum products, adding that “Among the most pressing issues addressed was the illegal sale of petrol and diesel by the roadside where over 2000 litres of petroleum products were seized. This is a highly dangerous practice that poses a significant risk of fire hazards and explosions. We will ensure that such activities that endanger the lives of these illegal merchants and other road users are brought to a complete halt”.

He further assured that the Lagos State Task Force remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents, and this operation is a testament to that commitment, stressing that the Agency will continue to monitor the area to prevent the resurgence of illegal activities and to ensure that the roads remain clear for safe and smooth transportation.

Residents and business owners in the Mile 2 area are urged to cooperate with the authorities and adhere to the Environmental Laws of the Lagos State Government to maintain the safety and serenity that has been recorded over time.

CSP Akerele disclosed that four suspects were arrested and several items were confiscated during the raid. The arrested suspects will be charged to court and items confiscated will be forfeited to the State Government through the court.

LASG ANNOUNCES COMMENCEMENT OF TRANSFER INTO PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, has announced the commencement of transfer opportunities into Junior and Senior Secondary schools for students with genuine requests for transfer from public and private schools to public secondary schools in Lagos State.

The notice of the transfer exercise issued by the Permanent Secretary Mr. Abayomi Abolaji, said it is designed to provide opportunities for students whose parents desire to change their schools due to relocation and economic reasons.

The notice also reiterated that transfer could only be requested for students going to JSS II and SS II classes in public secondary Schools, stressing that the exercise, which commenced on Thursday, 8th August, will end on Friday, 30th August, 2024.

The Ministry, therefore, implored all interested parents to submit a written application addressed to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, stating the candidate’s school of choice, gender, age and state of origin.

The applicants are expected to attach passport photographs, birth certificates, 2nd and 3rd term results of previous classes.

LASTMA, FRSC COMMIT TO STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIP ON TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT IN LAGOS

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have agreed to strengthen their partnership in managing traffic across Lagos State.

This agreement was announced recently by the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki during a courtesy visit by the FRSC Zonal Commanding Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Jonathan Owoade and his team to LASTMA Headquarters in Oshodi, Lagos.

Mr. Bakare-Oki welcomed the initiative and reiterated LASTMA's commitment to collaborating with the FRSC on traffic decongestion, public enlightenment, and the enforcement of traffic regulations. He expressed confidence that the partnership would bring about positive outcomes for road users in Lagos.

He further disclosed that between January and June 2024, a total of 9,370 vehicles were penalised for traffic violations in Lagos. 

"Let me emphasise that 50% of these contravened vehicles were commercial buses, and all were prosecuted in the Lagos State Mobile Court in accordance with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018", Mr. Bakare-Oki stated.

He also highlighted several recent initiatives aimed at enhancing road safety and traffic management, including the launch of a toll-free call centre (080000527862), a Walk-In Complaint Centre, a Whistle Blower App, and the upgrade of both the Agency's website and the Planning, Research and Statistics Department.

In his address, FRSC Zonal Commanding Officer Mr. Jonathan Owoade emphasised that the FRSC remains Nigeria's leading agency in road traffic management and safety administration, with a strong commitment to eradicating road traffic crashes and creating a safe motoring environment. 

He confirmed that the newly introduced vehicle number plates are designed to enhance security by being visible from about 50 metres away.

The FRSC leader also called for a special public enlightenment campaign to educate motorists on the importance of various road signs.

The meeting was attended by the top management teams of both LASTMA and FRSC.

The Lagos State Government has taken significant strides in the fight against Hepatitis, launching comprehensive initiatives to curb the spread of the virus. At a symposium marking World Hepatitis Day in Lagos today, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, outlined the state's efforts, including subsidized Hepatitis C testing, vaccination of residents, and extensive community outreach programs aimed at reducing the disease's impact on the population.

Speaking at the symposium held at Folarin Coker Staff Clinic, Alausa, Ikeja, Dr. Ogboye emphasized that the fight against viral Hepatitis must be intensified in order to address the 2024 World Health Organization (WHO) Global Hepatitis report, which indicates that deaths resulting from viral Hepatitis have become the second leading cause of death, with about 1.3 million deaths annually, globally, 100 times more than HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Ogboye highlighted that a baseline report showed a higher prevalence of Hepatitis B (HBV) and Hepatitis C (HCV) in Lagos compared to the national average. He stated, "In 2016, a baseline assessment conducted with support from the Lagos State Government showed a higher prevalence of HBV and HCV (5% and 1%) when compared to the national average. These figures suggest that an estimated 2 million and 200,000 Lagosians are chronically infected with Hepatitis B & C, all of whom are at risk of developing cirrhosis and primary liver cancer if left untreated."

Explaining the significant steps taken by the state government towards mitigating Hepatitis, the Permanent Secretary said the state launched the Hepatitis Control Program in 2017 with a dedicated budget line. Dr. Ogboye disclosed that the state government has provided access to Hepatitis C viral load testing at subsidized prices, stressing that 435 Hepatitis C viral load tests have been performed in two diagnostic facilities in collaboration with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI). He added that the state government has also screened and vaccinated about 5,000 individuals, primarily health workers, across the state.

"The state government has provided access to Hepatitis C Viral Load testing at subsidized prices. About 435 Hepatitis C Viral Load tests have been performed thus far in two diagnostic facilities in collaboration with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI). Recently, the state has also provided screening and vaccination for over 5,000 persons, mainly healthcare workers, complemented by extensive community outreach programs," he said.

Reaffirming the commitment of the current administration to the fight against viral Hepatitis, Dr. Ogboye commended stakeholders for supporting the state government in this effort. He assured that the government would continue to engage relevant stakeholders and citizens in the prevention and control of the disease while implementing strategies to eliminate the scourge of infections in the state.

Earlier in his remarks, the Director of Disease Control in the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Rotimi Agbolagorite, explained that Hepatitis viral infection causes liver inflammation and damage and remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases, accounting for over 1.3 million deaths yearly. He further stated that the Y2024 World Hepatitis Day Celebration, themed "It is time for Action," aims to raise public awareness of Hepatitis's devastating effects and to upscale efforts to end the global scourge.

"We gather on this crucial day to mark World Hepatitis Day to raise public awareness about the devastating effect of Hepatitis on health and to scale-up efforts to end the global scourge," he said.

Speaking in the same vein, the Lagos State Viral Hepatitis Control Program Coordinator, Dr. Mazeedat Erinosho, explained that beyond the World Hepatitis Day celebration, the State Ministry of Health has been consistently conducting community awareness campaigns. "These campaigns aim to inform citizens about the government's prevention and control strategies and provide basic information on where and when to seek medical intervention against the deadly disease," she said.

Dr. Erinosho commended the commitment of the Lagos State government toward the prevention, care, increased awareness, and treatment of Viral Hepatitis. She assured that the government is intensifying efforts to reduce mortality rates due to the disease by 95% and 65% respectively by 2030.

The symposium lecturer, a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Dr. Rufina Igetei, explained that about 90 to 95% of Nigerians acquire the infection in childhood, either through the placenta from an infected mother or childhood spread. Dr. Rufina urged residents to take precautions against the deadly disease by getting tested and vaccinated, maintaining good personal and environmental hygiene, and avoiding the sharing of sharp objects.

The Commissioner made this known during a press briefing held yesterday at the Lagos State Press Center in Alausa, Lagos.

Reeling out some of the achievements of the Ministry, Hon. Abisola told the pressmen that Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu's free of charge middle-level food agro-hub in Idi-Oro, Mushin has recorded a maximum sales transaction of N918 million precisely in 40 days to tackle rising food costs as well as address post-harvest losses in the State.

According to her, the impact of the Mushin food hub is still being felt, as a means of discounting food items by the state government.

“The Mushin food hub is one of many that we should have in the state. The impact of the hub is still being felt up to now.

“We started with only Saturdays as the market days and subsequently in March we added Wednesdays. We have 339 registered vendors working with us on multiple food items.

“Over 26,000kg of garri, over 18,318 kilos of poultry meats, and over 55,000 crates of eggs have been sold in this one facility, In these 40 days of the open market’s operation, we have recorded food transactions of almost N1 billion, precisely, N918 million transactions".

"Besides the “Ounje Eko” initiative, food items, which include 10kg rice, 5kg garri, 5kg beans, and tomatoes, among others, all in combo packs, will be distributed to over 500,000 households in Lagos State". Olusanya said

The Lagos State House of Assembly has invited the Attorney-General of the State, Mr. Lawal Pedro, to appear before it to explain the Supreme Court judgement on local governments in the country.

The lawmakers said there was a need for better understanding of the decision of the apex court in relation to some provisions in the Constitution of the country.

A seven-man panel of the Supreme Court had declared on Thursday that the 774 local government councils in the country should receive their funds directly from the Federal Government as well as manage such funds themselves being a tier of government.

The court further declared that allocations to local government councils run by caretaker committees were illegal.

Ruling after a voice vote by lawmakers at plenary on Thursday, the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, ruled: "There is a need for us to seek clarification and understanding of this judgement. It will be good to invite the Attorney-General to brief us and give his understanding so that we do not run foul of the judgement." 

Meanwhile, the Lagos State House of Assembly has resolved to write a letter of commendation to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over the successful operation by men of the force that led to the elimination of nine kidnappers in the state recently.

A letter of commendation is also to be sent to the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Adegoke Mustapha Fayoade, for the efforts of the policemen which led to the fruitful operation.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who presided over the plenary, said the police and men of the force who took part in the operation needed to be commended.

Dr. Obasa agreed with members of the House that letters be sent to Egbetokun and Fayoade further charging them not to relent in keeping the State safe for residents.

He stressed the need for stakeholders to fast-track considerations for the creation of state police to support the federal police system.

The Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Noheem Adams, had earlier recalled how the police launched the operation against some kidnappers in the Ladipo area of the state and eliminated nine of them.

According to him, there has been calm in the area since the operation was carried out.

Noheem added that the Ikorodu area of the state which hitherto had issues of kidnapping now enjoys relative peace.

In another development, the House of Assembly has applauded the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for seeking to encourage subsistence agriculture.

The Speaker said it was a beautiful idea to encourage Nigerians to have gardens in their houses arguing that this would help to create food sufficiency.

He recalled that schools had farms in the past adding that current situations call for a return to that period.

A total of 70,603 candidates, on Saturday, sat for the 2024 National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO) into the unity colleges nationwide

Registrar of NECO, Prof Dantani Wushishi, disclosed this while monitoring the exercise on Saturday at Model Secondary School, Maitama and Government Day Secondary School, Wuse 2 Abuja.

He stated that the examination was conducted in 599 centres across the country.

Wushishi said 33,335 males registered for the 2024 NCEE, while 37,268 females registered for the exercise totalling 70,603.

He lamented that the 2024 registration was lower than that of 2023 which had 34,064 males and 38,801 females, totalling 72,865.

The NECO boss attributed the low registration in 2024 to economic factors as the exam body had slightly raised the registration fee and parents, who are grappling with the effect of the economy, were responsible for sponsoring candidates at this level.
