Federal Government Has Not Scrapped JSS, SSS – Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa Debunks Rumors

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized that the reports circulating in the media were misleading, stating that the government has only proposed a 12-year basic education system, which is still under review.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, the ministry stressed that the proposal remains subject to approval by the National Council on Education (NCE) before any final decision is made.

“A key aspect of this proposal is to eliminate the examination barrier between JSS and SSS, allowing students to progress seamlessly without external assessments at that stage. However, this remains subject to further consultation and deliberation,” the statement read.

To ensure a well-informed decision, the ministry announced plans to engage with key stakeholders, including education policymakers, state governments, teachers, and parents over the next eight months. The final decision on whether to adopt the proposed reform will be made at the National Council on Education meeting scheduled for October 2025.

The ministry urged the public to disregard misleading claims and assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remains committed to implementing policies that enhance access to quality education while aligning with global best practices.
