A Lagos Chief Magistrate’s Court yesterday remanded a chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Ganiyu Oyedepo (aka Kokozaria), in prison custody for assaulting an actor, Alhaji Ade Adele (aka Baba Lawori).

Oyedepo was remanded following his arraignment on alleged offences of conspiracy, assault occasioning harm, and conduct likely to cause breach of public peace.

Chief Magistrate B. Sonuga remanded Oyedepo, after he pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him by the operatives of the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID).

The prosecutor, Morufu Animashaun, a legal officer in the legal department of FCIID, Alagbon, in a charge marked B/40/2024, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June 5, 2024, at Idimu, by conspiring with some of his ‘boys’ to assault Adele.

He said in the course of the assault, Oyedepo’s boys, injured Adele in the head with a bottle.

He told the court that the offences committed by the defendant, contravened sections 411; 173 and 168 (l)(d) of the Criminal Law Ch. C17, Vol. 3, Laws of Lagos State and punishable under section 168 (2) of the same laws.

The charges are “That you Ganiyu Oyedepo on or about the June 25, 2024 at Idimu, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, Lagos conspired to commit Felony wit: Assault Occasioning Harm and committed an Offence contrary to Section 411 of the Criminal Law Ch. C17, Vol. 3, Laws of Lagos State

That you Oyedepo on the said date unlawfully procured one of your boys (now at large) who unlawfully broke bottle and inflicted injuries on the head of one Alhaji Ade Adele and committed an Offence contrary to Section 173 of the Criminal Law Ch. C17, Vol. 3, Laws of Lagos State 2015.

“That you Oyedepo conducted yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace when you threatened and procured one of your boys (now at large) to break bottle on the head of Adele and committed an Offence contrary to Section 168 (l)(d) of the Criminal Law Ch. C17, Vol. 3, Laws of Lagos State 2015 and punishable under Section 168 (2) of thé same Criminal Law Ch. C17, Vol. 3, Laws of Lagos state 2015.”

Oyedepo denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

His lawyers, S. Bello with S. O. Ajetomobi, moved for bail application, saying the charge against their client is a bailable one.

They urged the court to grant him bail in the most liberal terms.

Chief Magistrate Sonuga after hearing counsels’ submissions granted Oyedepo bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties in like sum.

The sureties, according to the Chief Magistrate, must be of unquestionable character, with evidence of means of livelihood and must be residing within the court’s jurisdiction.

The Chief Magistrate also ordered the sureties to present to court evidence of three years tax, and have their addresses verified.

Chief Magistrate Sonuga, while adjourning the matter to October 29, for mention, however, remanded the defendant in the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) custody, pending the perfection of the bail terms.

The Federal Government has said potential buyers would have to present their National Identification Number (NIN) as commenced the sale of 30, 000 metric tonnes of milled rice to Nigerians at a subsidised rate of N40,000 per 50 kilograme bag.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, inaugurated the sale of the subsidised milled rice on Thursday in Abuja, noting that the exercise would be carried out across the country.

Kyari said the rice intervention was timely due to the times and current challenges in the country. He said that the Federal Government was aware of the potential challenges associated with the sales of an important staple such as rice, at this critical period.

Verification of buyers

Kyari said that a multi-disciplinary machinery of government had been deployed to ensure the transparency, wider reach, and success of the exercise.

- According to him, the process is structured to ensure that one person does not get more than one 50kg bag of rice.

- He said that intending beneficiaries would be “verified using relevant identification mediums such as the NIN and phone numbers to forestall multiple accesses to the commodity by fraudulent individuals at the detriment of other citizens.”

“In view of the above, I urge our dear citizens to cooperate with the relevant agencies of government who will try to serve you to achieve this great initiative of government.

“It is expected that with the injection of 30,000MT (1000 trucks of 30MT each of this important staple into Nigeria’s food balance sheet, it will not only crash the price of rice but also other closer food substitutes and alternatives,” he said.

Process of purchase

Highlighting the process Nigerians would have to follow to purchase the rice, the Director of Strategic Grains Reserve, Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Haruna Sule, said civil servants could access the grains from the point of sale with their Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

“Once you have any of these three, you present it to the sales operators and it is logged on the platform that has been created.

“After this, you proceed to pay electronically with your ATM; once the payment is done, it is linked to the initial sales operator and it shows that you have paid; then a receipt will be issued with a code number,” he explained.

- With the code number, he said the buyer will be issued with a treasury receipt to show that he or she has paid to government.

- The buyer is then given a receipt which shows point of collection and time of collection; this is to eliminate any form of stampede.

- He noted that the point of collection is different from the point of sales, adding that “when you get to the collection point, you present your code to our officials and you will be given a bag of rice.”

- In Abuja, he said the plan is to set up about five to six sales points across the FCT and the duration of the distribution will be for the period they are able to finish sales.

What you should know

The sale of subsidised rice was first announced by the Minister of Information, Idris Mohammed, in July. Following the announcement, the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs Human Resources Management Department asked civil servants to register for the sale of the food item.

The government thereafter announced that it had halted the plan without any explanation about the reason.

Terrorism Financing: Police To Question Ajaero On September 25

The scheduled second interrogation of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, by the police did not hold on Thursday as Ajaero and the NLC Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, who was also invited, did not show up at the police headquarters in Abuja.

Our correspondent, who was at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja where the labour leaders were billed to appear for interrogation, saw neither Ajaero nor Ugboaja.

However, a source familiar with the situation said the NLC leaders had written investigators that they would not be available for Thursday.

“They did not show up. I am aware they have written those handling their case that they wouldn’t be coming today. They asked them to expect them on September 25,” the source said.

Counsel for the NLC, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), who accompanied Ajaero to the police headquarters for his first appearance on August 29, had told one of our correspondents on Wednesday that the labour leaders might likely seek a postponement of the interrogation.

Speaking further on the matter on Thursday, Falana said, “We wrote for another date as Comrade Joe Ajaero has an engagement outside Abuja today.”

The police are alleging a link between the labour leader and a Briton, Andrew Wynne, who has been accused of financing the recent #EndBadGovernance or #Hunger protest in the country to allegedly overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu.

Following Ajaero’s first appearance on August 29, the police, in another letter signed by the Commissioner of Police, Operations, Ibitoye Alajide, on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department, Abuja, asked him to appear again on Thursday, September 5, alongside with the NLC General Secretary “to answer questions over alleged criminal intimidation, conducts likely to cause a breach of public peace, and malicious damage to property.”

The letter read: “In furtherance of investigations into the alleged case of criminal intimidation, conducts likely to cause breach of public peace and malicious damage to properties in which your name featured, you are requested to come along with Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja for an interview with the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department, FID, through the undersigned, at SPO’s Room 112, 2nd Floor, Force Intelligence Department (FID) Complex, Shehu Shagari Way, opposite Force Headquarters Area 11, Garki, Abuja on Thursday, 5th September 2024 at 11 am.”

When contacted by The PUNCH on Thursday over the non-appearance of the invited labour leaders, the Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, promised he would get back to our correspondent.

He had, however, yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

The Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced plans to supply 17.8 million barrels of crude oil to Dangote Refinery between September and November. This move is part of the Federal Government's efforts to drive local production of petroleum products.

According to NNPCL Vice President, Downstream, Mr. Adedapo Segun, the supply will include 6.8 million barrels in 7 cargoes of crude oil in September and an additional 11 million barrels in November. This brings the total crude oil supply to Dangote Refinery to 30 million barrels, enabling the refinery to commence operations.

The statement also clarified that Dangote Refinery will sell its petrol to independent marketers who meet stipulated conditions, in addition to NNPCL. This move is expected to increase the availability of petroleum products in the country and reduce reliance on imports.

Mike Oluwole, the former boss of Nicholas Peter, spoke to Punch on Monday, September 2.

Oluwole said Nicholas came to his office to sell a camera lens, which he later discovered to be allegedly stolen.

He told the publication: "When he came to my office to sell the camera lens, I asked about its owner. He claimed that it belonged to his friend, and I put him on the spot to confirm. I made him sign that he sold it to me. I then told him how much I needed a good photographer and photo editor and he showed interest. I put him on a series of photography tests, which he passed outstandingly.

"I then employed him on probation for six months with a monthly pay of N70,000, and he consented. But I noticed something with Nicholas: he is always demanding. My company has a scheme called ‘I owe you (IOU)’ to help relieve staff members of their financial burdens until the end of the month when they get their salaries to repay. He was always defaulting in the scheme and would beg me to help him spread the pay beyond the next month.

"When he resigned, he only sent a text, and I asked him if that was the appropriate way to go about things. He then began to insult me, advising me on how to go about human management and leadership.

"I learned that our office phone was missing; I rang him to no avail after CCTV revealed that a day before his resignation, he had returned to the office, disconnected the office camera, and connected it while heading out. Unperturbed by his actions that are costing my customer database, I reported him to the police, and he was arrested."

He said the photographer was questioned about the disappearance of the phone for days before his case was transferred to the court. Oluwole alleged that Nicholas later confessed to stealing the phone, but it was too late to stop the prosecution.

He said that after being pressured, he wrote to the Upper Area Court, Mpape in Abuja, where Nicholas was prosecuted, to stop the case, but his letter was not approved.

"I heard that the letter was rejected because it was not properly written, of which I did due diligence. I learned about the bail fee when he got to Keffi Correctional Centre. At first, he said it was N20,000, which I sent to one of the people he contacted to beg me for his release. He rang me again and said that it was N50,000. I didn’t believe him because he had always had a distrust for him. So, I informed them to refund me.

"I did all I could to facilitate his release, and when he returned, he came to my office, and I sent N20,000 to him again with the promise that I would help him get an offer if he changed for good."

Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has reportedly suspended the sale of Premium Motor Spirit – popularly called petrol – to independent marketers after it hiked the product’s price on Tuesday.

This is even as three vessels berthed at the Apapa, Lagos jetty on Wednesday to discharge imported petrol.

The price hike sparked a protest in Delta State as commercial tricycle operators, also known as ‘keke’ riders, took to the streets of Warri and Effurun metropolis to resist the price hike.

Checks by our correspondents revealed that commuters across the country were either stranded or trekked long distances on Wednesday as fuel queues worsened amid scarcity of the product.

Few commercial motorists came out for business, with most of them lamenting the agonising hike in fuel, barely a month after the hardship protest rocked the nation.

The National Vice President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Hammed Fashola, told The PUNCH that the NNPC stopped selling fuel to independent marketers on Tuesday when it raised the price of a litre of PMS to N855 and above across its retail outlets nationwide.

Independent marketers sold the product for as much as N1,200 and N1,300/litre in some states following the upward review of prices by the NNPC.

Fashola wondered why the national oil firm would suspend the sale of petrol to the marketers take without any official communication, even when the marketers had paid for the product over two months ago.

Asked if it was true that many of the independent marketers did not go to the depot to lift fuel, Fashola responded, “What are they going there to do? They have stopped our loading. All the tickets we have in the kitties of NNPC, they are not treating them; everything has been suspended.”

When our correspondent inquired to know if the suspension was done despite having paid for the product ordered, he replied, “Yes, our tickets were suspended for loading. They have not been attending to us since yesterday (Tuesday), and there is no official communication yet.

“It is a very bad situation for somebody who has paid for the product, maybe like two to three months ago, and all of a sudden, you stopped loading, maybe because you want to change the price. And it’s not the fault of that customer, because it is supposed to be cash-and-carry. So, I think the NNPC should look at that situation critically.”

It was learnt that NNPC usually prioritised major marketers while IPMAN members resorted to private depot owners, who sold at higher prices, leading to a wide gap between the prices offered by both categories of marketers.

“We’re usually forced to go to private depots, it’s not out of our own volition. We were forced to go there because of inadequate supply,” Fashola stressed.

Speaking on the Dangote refinery fuel, which is expected to hit the pumps soon, Fashola said marketers would monitor the situation till Friday.

“We are watching the development. We are monitoring it; we will wait, maybe by Friday we will know where we are going by the time the Federal Government makes a pronouncement as regards the price. There is no official communication yet.”

Education: Banning under-18 from WAEC, NECO will limit potential of Nigerian children – Olota

Oba Abdulkabir Obalanlege, Olota of Ota, Ogun State, says banning under-18 students from sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will limit the potential of Nigerian children.

Obalanlege made the observation while delivering a goodwill message at the 15th Anniversary of Adedokun International Schools on Monday at Iyana-Iyesi Multipurpose, Ota, Ogun.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, had on Aug. 25, announced a move by the Federal Government to ban students below 18 years from sitting for WASSCE and the one conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO).

According to Obalanlege, restricting under -18 students from sitting for WAEC and NECO examinations will limit the children’s potential in terms of competing with their peers around the world.

“My advice to the Federal Government is to follow the international best practices rather than limiting the potential of our young ones,” he said.

Obalanlege said that this would help to enhance the standard of education in the country.

Cops, Driver Killed In Attempted Abduction Of Delta Lawmaker's Wife -

 Two policemen and a driver were reportedly killed by gunmen in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State as suspected kidnappers moved to abduct Mrs. Christy Uroye, wife of the lawmaker representing Warri South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Augustine Uroye, on Monday night.

Eyewitnesses said the abductors shot dead the three victims, in their struggle to kidnap the woman whom the policemen were escorting in the SUV conveying her along Jakpa road, during the incident.

PUNCH Metro however gathered that the abductors’ getaway vehicle got disrupted as it crashed while making a frantic bid to escape with the captive, along the busy road, thus allowing for Mrs. Uroye’s rescue.

The victim is said to be currently receiving treatment at a nearby private hospital.

Eyewitnesses narrated that during the attack, residents of the area were forced to flee from the scene to avoid getting hit by bullets.

When PUNCH Metro contacted the Delta State Command Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, on Monday night, he confirmed the incident but claimed that the operation was “not successful.”

Edafe further stated in a terse message that three AK-47 rifles were recovered from the suspects’ vehicle.

Corroborating the PPRO’s statement, a family source who spoke with our correspondent, on Tuesday, on the condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to speak with the media, also affirmed that “the abductors’ vehicle got involved in an accident along the road with their captive while the woman is now receiving treatment in a private hospital in the locality.”

The source did not, however, confirm whether or not the abductors were arrested in the ensuing melee.

Minister Directs NNPCL To Sell PMS Above ₦‎1,000 To Curb Smuggling

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri has directed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited(NNPCL) must sell petrol above the landing cost, which currently stands at N1,117 per litre, to prevent the smuggling of the products to neighbouring countries.

Lokpobiri who disclosed this in Abuja, adding that security agencies are complicit in smuggling activities.

He said unless the NNPC Ltd imports and sells petrol above the landing cost, smugglers would continue to move petroleum products to neighboring countries.

Recall that the group chief executive officer of the NNPCL, Mele Kyari had last month met the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi on the rapid impact of the NCS’ “Operation Whirlwind” in reducing the smuggling of Premium Motor Spirit (also known as petrol) across Nigeria’s border communities.

During the meeting, Kyari said PMS evacuation to border states had decreased from 32 million litres per day to about 25 million litres within just two months.

The federal government had, in May 2023, removed the subsidy on petrol, which raised the price from about N197 to about N650 per litre.

While PMS is sold at an average of N701.99 in Nigeria, it is sold at an average of N1,672.05 in the Republic of Benin and N2,061.55 in Cameroon. In other countries around the region, the price of PMS ranges from N1,427.68 in Liberia to N2,128.20 in Mali, averaging N1,787.57, according to the fuel price data obtained from trading economics statistics.

This development had heightened PMS smuggling out of Nigeria.

Lokpobiri’s stated at the event that NNPC’s sale of imported fuel at a price above the landing cost will bridge the potential profit gap and curb smuggling of the product to neighbouring countries for high profit-making by those involved in the shady business.

19-yr-old native doctor ‘kpais’ client while testing ‘odeshi’ charm on him

Police operatives in Edo have arrested a 19-year-old native doctor, identified as Timothy Dauda, for allegedly sh%%ting one Alex Ezekiel to d£@th.

The command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, in a statement on Monday, September 2, said the incident happened on August 20 in the Onumu community under Akoko-Edo LGA.

Yamu said the suspect was arrested by personnel of the Igarra Division.

According to the statement, “The suspect claimed to be a native doctor and specialises in preparing charms against g¥ns and c¥tlasses.

One Alex Ezekiel, now deceased, went to the ‘native doctor’ to get the charms prepared for him.

After preparing the charms, the native doctor tried to test their efficacy by sh%%ting the deceased with a g¥n.

Unfortunately, the deceased sustained fatal injuries and was rushed to Ifejola Hospital, Igarra, where he was certified d€ad by a medical doctor.”

He said, “The Nigeria Police Force has launched a comprehensive investigation into the activities of foreign national and subversive elements plotting to undermine the democratically elected government in Nigeria through unconstitutional regime change and orchestrating violence across the country.

Investigations have identified a foreign mercenary, Andrew Wynne (also known as Andrew Povich or Drew Povey), a British national, who built a network of sleeper cells to topple the government and plunge the nation into chaos. He rented space at Labour House, Abuja, for an ‘Iva Valley Bookshop’ and established ‘STARS of Nations Schools’ as a cover for his subversive activities.”

Adejobi said documentary evidence and confessions revealed that Wynne provided finance and operational guidance to allegedly topple an elected government in the country.

He said, “Documentary evidence and confessions revealed that Andrew Wynne issued directives, monitored progress, and provided finance and operational guidance to achieve unconstitutional regime change in Nigeria.

“He mobilised and deployed several billions of naira to his Nigerian collaborators, urging them to mobilise the public to violently storm police facilities and military barracks, anticipating a bloodbath that would instigate international condemnation of the Nigerian government. These acts are in clear violation of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2011 and other relevant laws,” the FPRO added.

Adejobi said Wynne and his local coordinator, Obiyan, had fled the country.

He said, “Since the commencement of investigations, Andrew Wynne has fled the country. He and one of his local coordinators, one Lucky Ehis Obiyan, have accordingly been declared wanted, and global hunting for them has commenced in connection with this investigation.”

A US federal court has ordered a Nigerian businessman, Dozy Mmobuosi who last year sought to buy the English football club Sheffield United, to pay more than $250mn in fines and barred him from serving as a director of a public company.

Last year, the US Securities and Exchange Commission had charged Dozy Mmobuosi and three of his companies, including two Nasdaq-listed enterprises, with fraud for inflating the “financial performance metrics of his companies and key operating subsidiaries to defraud investors worldwide”.

Judge Jesse M Furman, of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, has now entered a final judgment by default against Mmobuosi and his companies after the entrepreneur failed to make any representations in the civil complaint filed last December by the SEC.

The judge wrote that Mmobuosi and his companies, Tingo Group, Agri-Fintech Holdings and Tingo International Holdings, had “failed to answer, plead, or otherwise defend” themselves in the case. Mmobuosi and his three US-based entities have been ordered to pay more than $250mn in fines after the SEC alleged that his empire was a “fiction”.

Passengers travelling into Ogun State from various parts of Lagos State were stranded on Sunday as levy collectors, commonly known as Agberos (louts), hiked transport fares at the Berger Bus Stop.

A PUNCH Metro correspondent who monitored activities at the bus shed on Sunday observed that the agberos were informing incoming drivers from Lagos, who parked to pick up passengers heading to Arepo, Magboro, Ibafo, and Mowe in Ogun State, of the new fare prices.

Passengers, including worshippers and children returning from church, were seen stranded, pleading with drivers to reduce the transport fares.

Our correspondent observed that drivers charged commuters travelling to Mowe a flat fare of up to N1000, regardless of whether passengers intended to alight at any of the stops along the route.

The previous fare prices from the bus stop to the mentioned areas were N300, N400, and N500. However, when our correspondent arrived at the park around 3:00 pm on Sunday, drivers charged up to N1000 for the same journey.

A passenger named Adewale, heading to Arepo, had refused to board a bus charging N700 to Mowe, but was left in shock when the fare was further raised to N1000.

However, he lamented that after the vehicle departed, subsequent buses were instructed by the agberos to start charging N1000 for the trip.

“I was here when they charged N700 for any stop on the way to Mowe and Ibafo. I didn’t board because I thought the agberos would instruct the drivers to lower the price once more buses arrived.

“But unfortunately, as more buses arrived, the agberos kept telling the drivers to raise the fare. I’m shocked. This is pure wickedness,” Adewale lamented.

Joshua, a worshipper, who returned from church, informed our correspondent that the agberos were the main cause of the fare hike and urged authorities to find a lasting solution to the problem.

He said, “These individuals were dictating the fares to the drivers to increase their earnings. As the fares go up, they collect more from the drivers, leaving the passengers to bear the burden.”

A lady, who chose not to reveal her name, lamented the hours she had spent at the park because she couldn’t afford the increased fare.

“I didn’t budget for this when I left home this morning. I’ve been here for hours, and the drivers keep increasing the fares,” she lamented.

When our correspondent discussed the sudden fare hike at the bus stop, a driver who identified himself as Kazeem said he had filled his bus tank with fuel purchased from the black market.

“There’s no fuel available; the queues are too long. The fuel I’m using now was bought at black market prices. Do you expect us to charge the same rates?” Kazeem queried.

Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps have arrested nine individuals caught engaging in open defecation in the Berger area of the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a post on social media on Saturday.

He wrote, “Nine individuals were arrested for open urination and defecation at Berger last night.”

Wahab had earlier disclosed that 17 individuals were arrested on Thursday night at Berger for open urination, defecation, and not using the pedestrian bridge.

The state government’s zero-tolerance stance on open defecation is part of its broader efforts to maintain a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for residents.

The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources also commenced cleanup of the Ojodu-Berger highway median as part of its effort to end open defecation.

How Consumers Lamented As Electricity Meter Prices Rise

 The cost of a single-phase electricity meter has risen to over N130,000 from N88,000 in the first quarter of this year.

This is the second time the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission would approve an increase in the prices of prepaid meters.

Sunday PUNCH gathered that the price of a single-phase meter ranged from N130,000 to N139,000, while a three-phase meter was sold between N219,000 and N229,000, depending on the vendor.

This is just as some consumers who have yet to be metered continued to lament high estimated billing from their Electricity Distribution Companies.

The consumers on direct connection lamented that they receive estimated billings every month, stating that the amount being charged by DisCos is not usually commensurable to the units of energy they used.

A single-phase smart meter was sold at N106,802.69 while the three-phase smart meter rose from N154,600 in May this year to goes for N210,751.61.

According to some of the electricity distribution companies who spoke to our correspondent, DisCos no longer have control over meter sales, stating that the customers deal directly with the meter asset provider, who is mandated to supply the meter within 10 working days after payment.

The Chief Executive Officer of Femadec Group, Fola Akinola, recently said meter application portals were shut in April because the vendors and the DisCos were regularising prices to reflect the current economic realities.

“In a situation where you fixed the price of meters when $1 was around N500, and now that $1 is over N1,300, you cannot sell the ones you have because you will not be able to replace them. People cannot bring in meters because of the exchange rate,” he stated.

Consumers kick

In an interview with our correspondent on Saturday, the Executive Director of the Electricity Consumers Protection and Advocacy Centre, Princewill Okorie, wondered why NERC would approve another meter price increase at a time the consumers are still struggling with the Band A tariff hike.

According to Okorie, Discos, aided by NERC, have been extorting Nigerians by failing to abide by the MAP policy which stipulated that consumers should get energy credit as a refund for meters paid for.

“The MAP scheme policy says that if a consumer pays for a meter, he should get a refund through energy credit. How many consumers have been paid back?

“Why will this sector be only about collecting money from the consumers without service delivery, transparency and accountability? This is because nobody punishes or monitors the Discos. It still boils down to the consumer aspect of the sector not being taken seriously.

The consumer rights activist disclosed that during the 2022 tariff hike, NERC had approved for DisCos that for every bill a consumer pays, a certain percentage should be for the Meter Acquisition Fund.

In June this year, the Federal Government approved N21bn under the Presidential Metering Initiative to provide meters to unmetered customers at no cost.

Consumers are asking how the N21bn Mater Acquisition Funds allocated to the DisCos were spent.

NERC spokesman, Usman Arabi, could not be reached at the time of filing this report.

An official of the commission who spoke on anonymity told our correspondent that customers are not to pay for meters under this initiative

Asked if this would not amount to discriminating against those who have been paying for meters for all these years, the NERC official retorted, “Those people are supposed to be refunded by the DisCos through energy credit and the commission is following up on the compliance.”

Another source told our correspondent that the MAF meters are for Band A customers only.

“The Phase 1 MAF meters will be given to Band A customers for free. It will eventually go round to other customer classes”, said the source.

However, our correspondent observed that the metering gap is still as high as seven million of the 13 million electricity customers.

The Executive Director of Research and Advocacy, Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors, Sunday Oduntan, told our correspondent that the meter policy has changed, saying DisCos no longer have control over meter sales.

Amid issues around availability of petroleum, residents of border communities between Nigeria and Benin Republic in Ogun State have lamented the cost of buying petroleum.

It was gathered that in the areas, petroleum has reached up to N2000 per litre.

This may not be unconnected to the fact that only four petroleum stations are said to be licensed by the federal government in the area, they are; Lafems Oil, Mobil Fuelling Station, Oppresso Oil and Gas; and Somolab Fuelling Station are authorised by the Nigerian government to sell petrol.

Some of the areas affected are; Idiroko, Ijofin, Agosasa, Ipokia, Iwoye Ketu, Tube, Oniro, Araromi ofo, Ilate, Ohunbo, Agada, Maahun and Tungeji, across Ipokia and Imeko Afon Local Government Areas.

The fueling stations licensed by the federal government sell fuel between N1,200 and N1,300 per litre, while black marketers sell N2,000 per litre, according to PUNCH.

Smugglers have also been blamed for the increase in the cost of petroleum in the area.

It would be recalled that in 2019, former President Muhammadu Buhari banned the supply of petroleum products to petrol stations within 20km of the country’s border due to diversion of fuel to Neighbour if countries.

Although the Buhari government later granted some filling station waivers to sell fuel in the border communities, the number is however insignificant to the population of the areas.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Ipokia Local Government Youth Forum, Imoleayo Mawutin, lamented that four petrol stations were grossly inadequate to serve a population of over 350,000 people.

He called on the government to lift the ban on the sale of petrol and allow other filling stations sell fuel.

Every week, we have a total supply of 180,000 litres of PMS in our local government but it is all going down the drain to the Benin Republic, PMS racketeers and black marketers.

“Our people now have to go as far as over 30km to Owode township, in another local government to buy PMS which customs will still have to harass and treat them badly while they confiscate the products meant for domestic consumption.

“These inhumane acts had forced most of our hospitals, Small and Medium Enterprises and farmers out of operations and the few left with no other option have to result to buying of PMS from black marketers and hoarders at an unreasonable price ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 Naira per litre”, Mawutin said.

Sources within the Presidency told Saturday PUNCH that President Bola Tinubu and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, questioned the intelligence gathering mechanisms of the two agencies following the violent nature of the #EndBadGovernance protests in some northern states and the seizure of three presidential aircraft in France.

While Bichi was held responsible for lack of functional intelligence on the protest, Abubakar was reportedly queried for the NIA’s inability to have reports ahead of the seizure of the jets by a Chinese company, Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Limited.

A French court had sanctioned the seizure of three Nigerian presidential jets, including a newly purchased Airbus, amid a legal dispute between Zhongshan and the Ogun State Government.

The #EndBadGovernance protest, which began on August 1, turned violent in Kano, Gombe, Yobe, Borno and Bauchi states while demonstrations in the South-West were peaceful.

During the protests in some northern states, public and private facilities were destroyed, while hoodlums looted shops and caused mayhem. This led to the imposition of curfews in Kano, Bauchi, and Plateau states.

The protest was driven by widespread hardship resulting from the removal of fuel subsidy, electricity tariff hike and the high cost of living, among other issues.

Bichi, who hails from Kano State, where widespread destruction and looting occurred, was appointed on September 14, 2018, by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Abubakar, from Katsina State, was also appointed by Buhari on January 10, 2018.

According to credible sources, Tinubu and Ribadu were embarrassed by the turn of events on the seizure of the presidential jets and the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations.

Lagos holds Interactive Session with Community Media Practitioners

Lagos State Government on Friday, August 28, 2024 has charged community media practitioners to be objective with their roles as information gatekeepers when dissemination news to the publics at the grassroots.

SSA to the Governor on Local Government and Rural Development; Mr Babatunde Durojaiye gave this charge while delivering his keynote address during an interactive session with community media practitioners at the State Secretariat earlier today.

Mr Durojaiye iterated that the interactive session is targeted towards equipping Community Media Practitioners with requisite knowledge on grassroots information dissemination that will foster goodwill for this administration, especially in projecting the policies, programmes and achievements of the Sanwo-Olu led Administration, implemented through the T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus Agenda.

He harped on the crucial role community media practitioners play in ensuring that the masses are properly informed on the programmes and policies of the Government and how they can benefit from it. This, he said, is the major gatekeeping role that community media practitioners should perform.

He added that the role of the community media practitioner is crucial in shaping the mindset of the people about their government, hence the need for them to always ensure that the publics are exposed to the numerous projects and policies being executed by the Government both in rural and urban areas, and should also ensure that Government is made aware of the plights and needs of the people.

He stressed that the administration of Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has continued to invest into critical infrastructure needed in communities across the State and has also been providing grants and loans targeted majorly to rural dwellers who are into small and medium scale businesses in their communities.

“This is why it behoves on you as community media practitioners, who are information gatekeepers between the Government and the people at the grassroots to ensure policies and programmes of the Government that would benefit the people at the grassroots is properly disseminated to them, while also serving as a feedback medium for the Government”. He said.

Similarly, the Assistant Director, Public Affairs in the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development; Mr Kehinde Adebayo, while delivering his welcome address, thanked Mr Governor for approving the Interactive Session since his assumption into office.

He stated that Interactive session such as this affords the Ministry the opportunity to have periodic interface with Community Media Practitioners, thereby creating a platform where these practitioners can be properly informed on the numerous projects the administration of Mr Governor has executed across the State.

Adebayo also stressed on the integral role community media practitioners play in a State like Lagos, adding that the role of an information gatekeeper is a privileged role that must be performed with integrity.

“While performing this role, we must ensure we are transparent about our biases and conflicts of interest, and ensure we do not use it to paint Government in a bad light or create agitations in our Communities. As an unbiased Gatekeeper, we need to be accountable to our communities, as well as the Government by ensuring we amplify the voices of those who need to be heard and douse the voices that can cause anarchy in the society”. He said.

Publisher of the Lead Lagos Community Newspaper in Amuwo-Odofin; Adejumo Abayomi, while speaking on behalf of the participants, applauded the administration of Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for the continued inclusion of Community Media in information dissemination channels of the State.

He assured that Community Media Practitioners would continue to project the policies, programmes and the achievements of this administration across the 57 Councils of the State.

The interactive session which is the third of its kind since the inception of the administration of Mr Governor was well attended by seasoned facilitators and community media practitioners across the 57 Councils of the State.

SANWO-OLU CHARGES YOUNG PEOPLE TO STAY FOCUSED, SHUN PEER PRESSURE

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has charged young people, particularly the recipients of the Silver Award of the International Award for Young People Nigeria, to stay focused to achieve a greater tomorrow.

He urged the recipients of the award, which is part of the globally recognised Edinburgh's International Award framework, to thrive to be the best in everything they do and make good use of the opportunities and platform given to them.

Governor Sanwo-Olu spoke on Thursday during the Silver Award Presentation Ceremony and 10th Anniversary of the International Award for Young People Nigeria, tagged "#Celebrating Infinite Impact," held at Lagos House, Ikeja.

The Governor urged the 200 public school students aged between 16 and 24, who received the Silver International Award for Young People, Nigeria, to see the development as a motivation to push forward to greater heights.

He also advised the recipients to shun peer pressure and social media influence and stay focused to achieve a greater tomorrow.

"I want to urge you to believe in yourself. At age 15, 16, continue to say to yourselves that I will always do the right thing. Stay focused. Don't join the crowd or believe that it is okay to do the wrong thing. No, it is not okay because it is from now that you mould your tomorrow. It is from now that you determine what your future would be, and it is only when you do it right that that future that you want can come to reality," Governor Sanwo-Olu advised.

Speaking virtually during the event, the Board Chair, International Award for Young People, Nigeria, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Olawale Edun, commended the resilience of the young people in achieving the feat despite the rigorous exercises.

Edun challenged the Silver Awardees to pursue their dreams and aim for the Gold Award to distinguish them among their peers.

Turkeys start laying eggs at six to eight months and this production period is up to 24 weeks from the point of lay. Under proper feeding, a single turkey lays as much as 60-100 eggs annually. Nearly 70 percent of the eggs will be laid in the afternoon. When it comes to hatching, it can hatch as many as 15 at each sitting.

Specifics for breeding and incubating turkeys are quite different from chicken.

The incubation period is 28 days. There are two methods of incubation. Natural incubation with sitting females; naturally turkeys are good brooders and each can hatch 10-15 numbers of eggs. Only clean eggs with good eggshells and shape should be placed for brooding to get 60%-80% hatchability and healthy poults.

Turkeys require particular conditions which are different from those for other poultry birds. First of all, turkeys need a lot of space by virtual of their size.

Feeding

 start your turkeys on starter mash. Make sure there is plenty of starter mash in the feeders, and that the chicks have fresh clean water at all times. Common varieties of turkeys include broad-breasted bronze and Broad-breasted white.

Feed for turkey poults must contain at least 24 per cent protein (not found in many commercial feeds), 2 per cent calcium and 0.9 per cent phosphorus.

Turkeys require about six square feet of space each.

Young ones

For a start, a lamp that provides 100F is required. The temperature should be lowered by five degrees a week thereafter. 

Young turkeys can be hard to look after as they have been known to eat their litter.

Remember that turkeys are curious birds. It is hard to tell what they can get into. You should strive to keep the area where your turkey lives free of hazardous elements like oil.

Turkey is considered a good source of vitamins. 

Saturated fat is necessary for biological functions, hormone production, padding for organs and energy. While saturated fat is necessary for a healthy body, most moderately-active people need to avoid too much of it in their diet. Turkey has under 12% of the recommended daily allowance of saturated fat per 4oz.

Grass-fed turkey raised under organic conditions conveys the most health benefits. Grass-fed turkeys offer higher nutrition and are superior to birds given antibiotics or raised without access to natural pasture.
