Lagos Speaker, Obasa Condoles With Tinubu Family, Ambode Over Deji Tinubu's Death

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has expressed shock at the sudden death of Mr Deji Tinubu, Special Adviser to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Commerce and Industry.

In his condolence message to the Tinubu Family and the Akinwunmi Ambode led Lagos State Government, Rt. Hon. Obasa prayed to God to give the deceased a peaceful rest and the family as well as the state government the fortitude to bear the huge loss.

"The sudden death of Mr Deji Tinubu was shocking. He was a likeable man, diligent and humble. His contributions to the development of this state, within and outside government, cannot be overlooked," the Lagos Assembly Speaker said in the statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Musbau Rasak.

According to him, the late Tinubu died at a very critical time when his services are most needed to complement the present administration's desire to ensure that Lagos continue to excel.

"However, who are we to question Almighty Allah? It's His desire that our brother's time on planet Earth has expired. We pray to Him to give the Tinubu family and the Lagos State Government under Governor Akinwunmi Ambode the fortitude to bear the huge loss. We also pray that the soul of Deji Tinubu continues to find peace with his Creator," he said.

Strange! Ambode's Aide, Deji Tinubu slumps, Dies during Football Game

Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Commerce and Industry, Deji Tinubu has slumped and died.

Tinubu was said to be playing football with other members of the State Executive Council after the end of the second day of the ongoing Retreat for Permanent Secretaries, directors and executives members late Thursday in Epe when he slumped and died.

Government sources said he suddenly shouted during the football match and then slumped and died.

The death of Tinubu has thrown the entire Governor Akinwumi Ambode’s cabinet and the entire state government into mourning.

Tinubu was the Chairman, Lagos Sports Commission and Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports. He was later made the Special Adviser on Sports alone after the sports commission chairman was given to another person by Ambode.

At the recent Cabinet reshuffle by Ambode, he was redeployed to Commerce and Industry as Special Adviser before his death.

Tinubu was also the Director General, Lagos Sports Commission during the former Governor Babatunde Fashola’s tenure.

Bolanle Ambode urges Nigerians to be prayerful

AgegePulse Magazine

Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, has called on Nigerians to intensify their prayers in order to ensure that all challenges facing the country become a thing of the past.

She made the call today at the Special Prayer Session for the State and the Nation, organized by the Fatima Charity Foundation held at the City Hall, Lagos Island.

Mrs. Ambode noted that though our country may be facing some challenges like many other countries, it is not beyond divine solution and that the Almighty God will never close His ears to the supplication of His children.

In her words, “Today, our nation like others is faced with challenges which are multi-dimensional and also threatening the peaceful co-existence of the different nationalities that make up the entity called Nigeria”.

“At a time like this, we need to unite in prayers for divine intervention. We need to pray to God to give our leaders the wisdom, the strength and the courage to find a lasting solution to the challenges facing the nation and the people”, she asserted.

Commenting on the theme of the Prayer Session, “The Practice of Islam in Multi-Religious Society”, the Governor’s wife noted that our religious diversity should serve to deepen our understanding and strengthen our social bond.

She said, “We must come to terms with the fact that, it is the will of God that we belong to different faiths. What is expected of us is to see ourselves as brothers and sisters and live together in peace, unity and harmony”.

Earlier in her welcome address, President of the Foundation, Chief Bintu Fatima-Tinubu, disclosed that the annual prayer which is the 7th in the series was organized primarily to commit the nation, leaders and the citizenry into the hands of God based on the conviction that tremendous progress could be made through spiritual guidance despite challenges and diversities.

She noted that the foundation had over the years shown tremendous commitment to national development, by organising the annual prayer programme with different topics, towards solving national challenges.

Fatima-Tinubu, therefore, urged the people to continue to support the efforts of government in building a better society, by advocating good morals among people and encouraging the youths to shun violence and tow the path of Godliness.

Present at the programme were former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Alhaja Sinatu Ojikutu, League of Imams from the five divisions, Baba Adinni of Lagos, white cap chiefs and other eminent personalities.

Lagos DNA Centre Sets To Tackle Homicide, Drug, Alcohol , Abuse...

...Resolves 35 Cases In Three Months

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said it has awarded the contract for the expansion of the operations of the DNA and Forensic Centre to include a world class Forensic Toxicology and Chemistry Section in line with efforts to expand the scope of operation of the Centre to offer more services.

The State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, who disclosed this in a statement, said the addition of the Toxicology and Chemistry Section was due to the high incidence and growing cases of homicide and suspicious deaths related to substance, alcohol abuse, drug related accidents and deaths, as well as suspected cases of poisoning.

“The award of this contract by the State Government is in fulfilment of the promise made by His Excellency Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at the commissioning of the Centre in September 2017, where the Governor informed Lagosians and the World that the first phase of the Centre was that of DNA and Forensic Biology and promised that the State would move to other phases by expanding the scope of operation of the centre to include Forensic Toxicology & Chemistry, Latent & Trace evidence, Firearms & Toolmark, Questioned documents and Digital evidence to expand the level of services offered by the DNA Centre,” the Attorney General said.

Kazeem expressed optimism that the Toxicology and Chemistry Section, which would be ready for commissioning in the third quarter of 2018, would automatically place Lagos as one of the leading centres for Forensics in Africa.

Highlighting some of the strides by the Governor Ambode administration in the justice sector, the Attorney said  the DNA and Forensic Centre in the last three months received over 150 requests for forensic analysis from within and outside Nigeria, while over 35 cases have been resolved using Forensic Technology.

He said the DNA and Forensic Centre since it began operation in September 2017, has become a significant milestone and a symbolic manifestation of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s efforts to carry out reforms in the justice sector.

Kazeem listed some of the cases handled by the Centre to include: Suspicious Death Investigations, Analysis of Human Remains that were exhumed to resolve inheritance disputes, Child Trafficking, Rape, Impersonation, Paternity and Maternity issues, among others.

“In stating the achievements of the Ambode Administration in the ongoing reform in the Justice Sector in Lagos State, the Attorney General confirmed that the Lagos DNA Forensic Centre in the three months of operation has received over 150 requests for Forensic Analysis from within and outside Nigeria, while over 35 cases had been resolved using Forensic DNA Technology,” the Attorney General said.

Besides, he explained that the Centre held workshops and training for Judges, Legal Practitioners, Police, other Law Enforcement Agencies and Emergency Responders in the State, while several representatives of foreign embassies in Nigeria and several International agencies have visited the facility and expressed their willingness to partner with the Centre, a situation, which demonstrates the importance and credibility of the centre.

As part of the ongoing overall reform of the justice sector, Kazeem also pledged the State Government’s commitment to support the reform and digitization of the probate system currently being driven by the Judiciary to make it more efficient and responsive to the needs of the people. He also vowed to accelerate prison decongestion through aggressive use of restorative justice techniques, plea- bargaining and non-custodial sentencing.

While reiterating the continued commitment of the present administration to justice sector reforms, Kazeem thanked Lagosians and enjoined all stakeholders to continue to partner with the State Government in its effort towards maintaining security, law and order.

Lagos arrests cart pushers, residents for dumping waste on road medians, canals

AgegePulse Magazine

…Apprehends four others over attack on LAGESC officers, vehicle
…Impounds 150 waste carts, suspects charged to court

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday arrested a total of 24 persons including cart pushers, street traders and some residents for dumping waste on road medians and canals contrary to the Environmental Sanitation Laws of the State.

The suspects, who have been charged before the Special Offences Court sitting in Ogba, Ikeja, were arrested in an early morning operation carried out by men of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) recently inaugurated by the State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode.

Giving details on the operation, LAGESC Corps Marshal, Daniel Isiofia said the suspects were arrested following investigation which revealed that cart pushers and some residents were indiscriminately dumping domestic refuse at sites not designated for waste disposal and canals, thereby sabotaging the ongoing efforts to make the State clean and hygienic.

He said: “Recently, there has been clamour for cleaner Lagos and the Governor has been very keen on making Lagos clean. To this end, he gave us a mandate to ensure that Lagos is kept clean by ensuring that acts that lead to the city to be dirty are curbed.

“We know that there have been massive efforts to clear the backlog of refuse on the road and our men went on surveillance and we eventually discovered where the cart pushers are operating at Ogunlana Street by Ogbomosho in Itire area. We raided the area and saw the cart pushers whose job is to collect refuse on payment from some residents who feel that they cannot dispose their refuse according to government directive and dump on road medians and canals.

“Often times, if you go to the canal at Itire-Ijesha area, you will see the cart pushers dumping refuse into the canal thereby blocking the waterways which leads to flooding. So, with the determination to stop this menace, we raided them at about 4am this morning and we succeeded in impounding 150 waste carts used for this purpose and arrested 11 suspects while others fled.”

Isiofia, who is a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, advised residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in public places, as well as patronizing cart pushers, saying such were against the law, just as he vowed that ongoing efforts to stop the menace would be sustained.

“We are going to sustain this process. I like to advise the operators of the waste carts to know that Lagos is not a place for them. They should leave Lagos or look for another job and to those who patronize them, if we get them, we will charge them to court because they are running foul of the law.

“We are appealing to the citizens to know that a clean Lagos is a healthy Lagos. It is for the benefits of all of us for our environment to be clean. Some people see us as enemies but we are not; we are only doing this job for the benefit of all.

“We are partners in progress; Lagosians should assist us. Governor Ambode too has pleaded with the people to support the bid to make Lagos clean and we are joining the Governor to appeal to people to desist from indiscriminate dumping of waste and make Lagos a very clean city,” Isiofia said.

Meanwhile, four hoodlums have been arrested for attacking LAGESC officials while performing their lawful duties.
The hoodlums carried out the attack on men of the agency on Tuesday at Brown Street area of Oshodi while on their way to enforce the ban on illegal dumping of refuse and street trading.

Two LAGESC officers – Olasilola Muyiwa John and Haastrup Ifealuwa were seriously injured while a Black Maria used as operational vehicle was badly damaged. All the suspects have since been charged to court.

Lagos donates 30 Power Bikes to security agencies

…Equipment’ll Boost Fight Against Crime, Enhance Safety – CP, Others

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday donated a total of thirty power bikes to security agencies operating in the State, saying that the donation was in line with the commitment of the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to boost security and enhance safety of lives and property.

The power bikes, funded by the Lagos State Lotteries Board, were donated to the Police Command in the State, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

Speaking at the brief handing over ceremony held at Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, Governor Ambode said the procurement of the bikes was in sync with his promise to prioritize the security of residents and ensure that no stone is left untouched to protect the people.

The Governor, who was represented by Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello, said security, being one of the tripod upon which his administration is built, would continue to be accorded its pride of place.

“We are here once again at the instance of His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode. If you must recollect last year when we had dinner with the members of the Security Trust Fund, the Governor promised that we are going to donate power bikes to security agencies to enhance their job of securing lives and property of residents.

“In fulfillment of that promise, we are here today to hand over to the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) for onward transmission to security chiefs here present the thirty power bikes donated to them by the State Government,” Bello said.

Speaking before handing over the bikes to security agencies, LSSTF Chairman, Mr Oye-Hassan Odukale commended Governor Ambode for the donation barely two months after promising to procure more bikes for security agencies, saying that it would go a long way in preventing crimes and enhancing security as well as safety of residents.

While expressing optimism that the equipment would be put into good use, Odukale called on corporate bodies and public-spirited individuals to team up with government to procure more equipment for security agencies in the overall interest of the people.

Receiving the power bikes on behalf of security agencies, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, commended the State Government for the donation, saying the bikes would greatly help to meander to pursue criminals, especially those that like operating whenever there is traffic.

The CP said: “Power bikes are essential for hot pursuits of criminals. Power bikes in line with visibility clause in community policing also establishes police and other agencies’ visibilities on our streets and highways. That is how important these thirty power bikes are in fighting crime in Lagos and I want to assure the Governor and the good people of Lagos that we will put the bikes to good use.”

Also speaking, General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olawale Musa; General Manager of LASEMA, Mr Adeshina Tiamiyu and the Commander of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the State Police Command, ACP Olatunji Disu all said the bikes would both help to prevent and fight crime and emergency situations.
