The Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of Education District 1, Barr. Mrs Titilayo Margaret Solarin has felicitated with the Winner of the 2019 Maltina Teacher of the year, 5th Edition in the series at the State level and also Winner of 2019 1st Runner Up of the year at the Federal level, Mr  Soji Megbowon VillageTisa when the Award was officially presented to her at the District Headquarters in Agege

A Computer and Further Mathematics teacher at Jakande Estate Comprehensive Senior College, Abesan Ipaja, Lagos State, Mr Soji Megbowon, emerged as the 1st runner up in the 2019 Maltina Teacher of the Year, thereby taking home an absolute one-off sum of 1.5M Naira plus a whooping sum of 0.5M for being a state champion representing Lagos state.

The award, which was held on Saturday October 19 2019, at the prestigious Eko hotel and suites, Victoria Island Lagos also had other states champions selected across 23 states in the fully packed hall. Mr Soji was also decorated and handed over with two different award plaques for his immense contribution to modern education and learning.

An elated Mr Soji Megbowon, who could not hide his joy at the occasion, was also shortlisted among the 50 best teachers of the Global Teacher Prize held earlier this year in Dubai with support from Education District 1 led by former TGPS, Dr. Yinka Ayandele and was also the overall best teacher at the annual INSEAD National Inspirational teacher Award 2019, thanked the Lagos state Government under the leadership of His Excellency Mr Babajide Sanwo-olu, the Executive Governor of Lagos State for his giant strides in seeing to it, that public education takes the first place in Lagos State. He also used the glorious moment to thank the Tutor-General of district 1, as well as his present and former school principals Mrs Adesanya and Mrs Makinde for their support to his teaching career.

Soji while responding, thanked the organizer of the award, Nigerian Breweries, for their deep insight and commitment to help in growing the education sector in Nigeria and making it vibrant again.

In his words, Mr Soji Megbowon said “Teaching in the 21st century is beyond the confinement of the four walls of a classroom” Teachers need to integrate into their students, the knowledge of “The Future of Work and the Work of the Future”. They need to learn about Artificial intelligence AI, Robotics, Coding, Basic Programming languages, Soft skills, Augmented reality and the application of this to solve real life problems. It is this preparedness that will make our students globally competitive and become social innovators . He added that the contribution of the company to encouraging teachers in Nigeria and putting smiles on the faces of the seemingly forgotten teaching professionals is a feat worth celebrating. He therefore re-iterated his commitment to continually work harder to make Nigeria proud and show case the excellent emblem of Lagos state to the whole world.

Soji popularly known as “Village Tisha” then called on all stakeholders in Nigeria to emulate the good gestures of Nigerian breweries by supporting and complementing Teachers efforts in helping the students become globally competitive. Artificial intelligence Laboratories, Internet enabled computers, virtual reality devices and various innovative kits should be made available to schools across the country in order to make teacher’s job easy as many of them struggle to teach full practicals about the labour market to their students. Local and international exposure is also needed by these pupils in order to be relevant and not be left behind, Soji added.
