BREAKING: No agreement yet on new minimum wage – Ngige

Olalekan Adetayo, Abuja

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, on Wednesday, said the Federal Government and the organised labour have yet to reach an agreement on the new National Minimum Wage as being reported in the media.
He said the government was still consulting and negotiation was still ongoing.
Ngige said this in an interview with State House correspondents after a meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The minister said there was no truth in the claim that those concerned have agreed to increase the minimum wage to N30,000.
He explained that while the organised labour agreed on N30,000, the organised private sector came down to N25,000, the Federal Government proposed N24,000 while state governors proposed N20,000.
He said in accordance with Convention 131 of the International Labour Organisation, the most important thing to consider in fixing the new minimum wage is the ability to pay.

FG, labour agree on new minimum wage — Wabba

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Ayuba Wabba has said the Federal Government would soon announce a new minimum wage as the Tripartite Committee had completed its assignment for onward submission to President Muhammadu Buhari.
He stated this yesterday while briefing journalists in Abuja.

Wabba said the committee has reconvened and deliberated on a new minimum wage figure that was acceptable to all employers of labour in the country.
“I want to assure workers that all has been concluded and will be passed for signing within the week.
“I also want to appreciate the Organised Private Sector, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) for their resolve to pay the new minimum wage when it is signed into law,” he said.
The NLC president, however, refused to disclose the figure arrived at by the Tripartite Committee.
Wabba said the presidency would soon make it public after deliberation by the National Economic Council meeting.
The organized labour had demanded N65,500 as new minimum wage for workers, while the private employers and some state governors were proposing N25,000.

Atiku Considers Soludo, Adesina, Chike Obi, Peter Obi,Ekweremadu As Running Mate

•To decide on zoning of position between South-west and South-east tomorrow

•Age, knowledge of economy key criterion for nomination

The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has begun earnest search for his running mate as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deadline for the submission of names of parties’ candidate expires on Monday.

By the 1999 Constitution as amended and the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, no candidature is complete without a running mate.
THISDAY sources close to the Atiku camp said at least three technocrats and two politicians have been penciled down for the position.

The technocrats are, former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof. Charles Soludo; former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina; and former Managing Director of Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON), Mr. Chike Obi.

The politicians being considered for the number two position are, former governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

According to a source, the candidate and the PDP hierarchy are still undecided on the zone the position should be allotted. But he said the scope had been narrowed down to the South-west and the South-east.

“We would have to weigh the electoral value of both zones and decide where we would allot it,” the source said, explaining that there was the need to maintain a balance between the existing political configuration, which requires the party to challenge the dominance of the APC in the high voting South-west by picking a running mate that would challenge the electoral advantage of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; and the need to retain the loyalty of the South-east that had remained a PDP stronghold.

Both zones were believed to have helped Atiku to neutralise the Northern zones’ delegates’ votes that went to Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal during the presidential primary on Saturday.

A source told THISDAY that the matter would be trashed out tomorrow at a meeting of the presidential candidate with the party hierarchy.
Apart from zoning, Atiku is also said to be considering age and knowledge of the economy and economics as two major criterions for the selection of the running mate.

According to a source, the presidential candidate thinks his running mate has to be a much younger person as a strategy to appeal to the army of youths, which is already up in arms against the old brigade.

Atiku is, however, said to be insisting that such a young man must also have deep knowledge of the economy as his focus is on the revival of the economy to create jobs for the teaming unemployed population.

“His challenge, therefore, is how to strike the balance between getting a youthful running mate and an economy savvy candidate. Both must be rolled into one,” a source said, explain that this might have informed the short list that was revealed to THISDAY.

Command arrests producer of adulterated wine in Lagos

Deji Lambo

THIRTY-two-year-old Ifeanyi Udeh has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for alleged production of adulterated fruit wine.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, said on Monday that operatives of the command intercepted the suspect during a stop-and-search duty in Agbowa, in the Ikorodu area of the state.
Imohimi said Udeh confessed to producing the adulterated drinks when interrogated, adding that such product led to health challenges.
The CP said, “The policemen went to the suspect’s apartment and recovered 50 cartons of adulterated alcoholic drinks and other category of drinks. Apart from the fact that it is an offence, this is worrisome because of the health implications of the drinks to members of the public.”

APC primaries: Buhari urges losers to emulate Ambode

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday appealed to all aspirants who lost during the recent primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) across the country not to abandon the party but rather emulate Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode who despite his loss decided to stick with the party.

He urged them to demonstrate sportsmanship by accepting the outcomes without bitterness or resentment.

Buhari made the appeal in a statement made available to journalists by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

The President also congratulated winners of the primaries and asked them to be magnanimous in victory.

“In every competition, someone has to win and someone has to lose, but those who lost should not abandon the party or lose their enthusiasm for the advancement of the party,” Buhari said.

He specifically advised Nigerian politicians to learn from several aspirants like Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, “who despite his loss didn’t abandon the APC for another party because he was angry over the outcome of the governorship primaries.’’

The President added, “The larger interest of our party is greater than our individual ambitions, and we should, therefore, work together for its success, despite our losses.

“In politics, we shouldn’t lose hope permanently because tomorrow could present another opportunity for us to contest again and win.

“Losers of the primaries should always put the party first because we are in it together to serve the country, and I am always proud of our members who demonstrate sportsmanship and a good party spirit.”

The President also enjoined the winners “to show grace in victory instead of mocking the losers, as such action is capable of destroying party unity and cohesion. The tent is large enough for us.”

He added that “those elected should see their positions as a public trust instead of abusing their mandates to amass personal wealth at the expense of the ordinary voters who voted them into power.’’

Oluwatosin Omojuyigbe
A mother, Oluwaseun Folorunsho, has accused a private medical facility in Lagos State, Oak Hospital, of killing her one-year-old son, Ogooluwa.
The 43-year-old mother claimed that workers at the hospital prescribed and administered drugs meant for her four-year-old son, Imole, to Ogooluwa, adding that it was what led to his death.
It was gathered that a medical test on the children revealed that they both had malaria and an unnamed infection, leading to their being admitted to the hospital.
While Imole was placed on drips, Ogooluwa was reportedly given injections.

Their mother told PUNCH Metro that when she gave Imole food to eat, he refused, adding that his vomiting continued.
The Ogun State indigene said despite her complaints, a doctor at the hospital said all was well.
She said, “On Sunday, Imole, who is the elder, started running a temperature. I called the attention of the doctor to it and he said I should not worry that he would be fine. He said his younger brother was already playing.
“In the afternoon, one of the nurses came with three injections for Ogooluwa. I noticed that she used big syringes to give him the injections.

Continue to preach hope, peace, unity, Ambode urges religious leaders

…As Osinbajo, Gov attend 58th Independence Service in Lagos

Agegepulse Magazine

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Sunday urged religious leaders to see the period as a time to continue to preach the message of hope, peace, unity, integrity and religious tolerance and intensify prayers for God’s intervention and restoration of hope in the future of Nigeria.

Governor Ambode, who spoke at a special Independence Interdenominational Service, held at the headquarters of the Deeper Life Bible Church Headquarters in Gbagada, Lagos, said he was optimistic that the best of Nigeria and the State was yet to come, urging Nigerians to continue to pray, hope and work for a better future for all.

"My brothers and sisters in the Lord, at this auspicious period in the history of our nation, the Church and indeed everyone who believes in the efficacy of prayer have a responsibility and patriotic duty to pray for the wellbeing and progress of our nation. I believe strongly that the best of our nation and our State is yet to come. Let us continue to pray, hope and work for a better future,” he said.

He said that as the nation prepares to go to the polls next year, all hands must be on deck to sustain and deepen the process that will result in sustainable growth and good governance for all, just as he urged Nigerians to eschew all tendencies that may aggravate the challenges being experienced at the moment.

“As we celebrate our 58 years independence anniversary, I urge us to remain steadfast and continue to uphold those values that have been passed down from our heroes who sacrificed so much to liberate us from the yokes of colonial rule.

“Today’s occasion is also coming at a critical time in the history of our nation when all hands must be on deck to sustain and deepen the process that will result in sustainable growth and good governance for our people.   We must all get involved and work together to ensure that the potentials of this nation are fully realized for the benefit of everyone and future generations,” he said.

He specifically commended the General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor W. F. Kumuyi, for his dedication and commitment shown towards the propagation of Christianity and the service of God over the years, adding that he (Kumuyi) had continued to impact the lives of many globally through inspirational teaching of the Word of God.

Governor Ambode also lauded the contributions of the church in the State, saying that the Gbagada community has benefited immensely from their various corporate social responsibility projects initiated by the church.

“I congratulate the Deeper Life Bible Church on this magnificent edifice you have put up here. I was unable to join you for the formal opening but I am very happy to worship in this sanctuary today as we celebrate another anniversary of our Independence.

“As I congratulate you on this new Church building, I also thank you for the good works you have done in the Gbagada Community. Your holistic approach to religious activities has been demonstrated in your corporate social responsibility actions especially the construction of the Oduwole Bridge and a multi-level car park to ease traffic in this community.

“You have demonstrated that the Church can play a lot of roles in nation building. Beyond the spiritual role of praying for the Government, the Church can also partner with the Government to make our communities a better place,” the Governor said.

He said his administration, in furtherance to the efforts of the church, embarked on the construction of a network of six roads identified by the community development associations, including Aderemi Akeju Street, Okun Street, Femi Kuti Street, Brown Road, Adegbenro/Ganiyat Dawodu Street and Yetunde Brown Street.

Governor Ambode said the contract for the road, which was awarded in September 2017 was already 60 percent completed and is expected to be concluded by the end of the first quarter of 2019, while adding that adjoining road networks such as Diya Street and Ajayi Aina streets have been scheduled for rehabilitation to further enhance road connectivity within the axis.

“For us as government, we will continue to promote fairness, justice and everything that will make life more comfortable for our people,” he said.

Also speaking, Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo in his message titled ‘Coming of Age’, said Nigerians must come to the realisation that the destiny of the country was in their hands and as such must continue to make concerted efforts to promote values that unite rather than divide us.

‎Atiku is Nigeria’s next president, says Ekweremadu

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has congratulated the winner of the Peoples Democratic Party presidential primary, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

Ekweremadu also congratulated the other aspirants and the PDP on the primary which he described as “crucial and rancor-free.” He noted that the process was more important than everything else as all the aspirants were qualified to lead the nation.
Ekweremadu said, “I join our teeming party faithful and supporters to congratulate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the incoming President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, by God’s grace, on his nomination as the standard-bearer of the PDP in the 2019 presidential election.
“Our party has, by this, demonstrated the full revival of internal democracy and total rebranding for the best democratic ethos. I commend the aspirants for the maturity, decorum, friendship, and mutual respect that characterised the jostle for the presidential ticket.  I urge them and the party faithful to continue to work together for the party’s victory in the 2019 general elections.”

Who Is Babajide Sanwo-Olu?

APC governorship candidate in Lagos state, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, was born on June 25, 1965 in Lagos. He had a fairly good upbringing, in the midst of a well groomed christian family.

Most of Sanwo-Olu’s education life has been in Lagos. He graduated from the prestigious University of Lagos, where he studied and obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Surveying. Shortly after obtaining his B.Sc., he proceeded to acquire his masters degree. He re-enrolled into the University of Lagos and duly obtained his MBA in Surveying.

While Sanwo-Olu is a trained and certified surveyor, he has a strong knack for business. He enrolled at the Lagos Business School, where he acquired his advanced business training and duly obtained his degree in Business Administration. He also attended the Business School in London, where he obtained his MBA.

Sanwo-Olu, as a corporate guru who knows the importance of governance, enrolled at the United States’ Kennedy Institute of Government. He was aptly trained in the area of government administration and civil responsibilities.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who is a trained Surveyor, started his career on a much different path. He was able to carve out a desired career path for himself and subsequently started out as a banker. He was, to say the least, highly successful in his chosen field of banking.

Sanwo-Olu’s Banking Career

Sanwo-Olu is well known for his success in the banking sector, with banking experience spanning well over a decade. He took up several roles and served in various capacities in three top commercial banks in Nigeria; First City Monument Bank (formerly known as First Atlantic Bank), United Bank of Africa (UBA) and Lead Bank PLC.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu‘s highlights as a banker started in the mid 1990s. He was appointed/promoted to the position of a Treasurer at the Lead Bank PLC. In this capacity, Sanwo-Olu was tasked with the prime responsibilities of overseeing the Liquid asset of the financial institution. He was also tasked with the daily management of the overall funding requirements of the bank. His tenure in this role lasted for only three years. He left the role in 1997 and subsequently left the bank for UBA.

While at the United Bank of Africa (one of Africa’s leading banks then and now), Babajide Sanwo-Olu rose to the rank of a Senior Executive Manager. He doubled as the Chief Head of UBA’s Money Market (Foreign). His primary responsibility in this role entailed management of UBA’s Liquidity and profit enhancement.

The Lagos state Governorship aspirant also headed UBA’s Strategic team. His team oversaw the bank’s entire investment banking among other important functions. Sanwo-Olu achieved significant success in his executive position at UBA and another top bank came calling for his services, with a much better offer.

Sanwo-Olu became the Deputy General Manager of First Atlantic Bank PLC (now First City Monument Bank – FCMB). He was charged with the responsibility of liaising with top companies in the country, as an expert Corporate financial analyst and advisor.

After about a decade at the top of the Nigerian banking sector, Sanwo-Olu decided to opt for a career transition, with the aim of infiltrating other private and public sectors.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu Career in the Private Sector

While, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has had his fair share of success in the Banking sector, he was equally successful in other businesses he ventured into, in the private sector. In fact, he was more successful in his other career endeavours in the private line.

Armed to the teeth with his corporate certifications, membership and experience, his success in the private sector is no fluke. He is a certified member of prominent management institutes in the country. Sanwo-Olu was trained in Personnel Management and holds the prominent membership certificate of CIPM (Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement). This is in addition to his certification by NITAD (Nigerian Institute of Training and Development).

Over the past 15 years, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has served as a board member of several top companies in Lagos and Nigeria as a whole. Apart from being a board member, he also acted in a consulting managerial capacity (chairman) for some of these firms. Some of these firms include:

**PowerCap consulting – a private power consulting company in Lagos.
**COSG – Caverton Offshore Services Group (Sanwo-Olu was a board member).
***Baywaych Group of companies – Constructions and Real estate (Sanwo-Olu acted in the capacity of a Chairman).
**LLNL-Light Level Nigerian Limited – a private digital solution firm (Sanwo-Olu acted in a directorial capacity).
**First Class Group – with specialty in cooling mechanism. A support firm of many telecom giants in Nigeria.
**Wow! Interiors – Interior design and house planning.
**Beryl Shelter – a real estate coy.

The above are some of the top companies, where Babajide Sanwo-Olu held (or still holds) stakes. In some of these companies, he was the CEO/Chairman/Director. In others, he was only a stakeholder.

While Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been extremely successful in the private sector, his exploits in the public sphere has, thus far, been much more successful.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Career in the Public Sector

This part of Sanwo-Olu’s career is by far the most significant. This portion of his career and the inherent achievements have stood him out. These have constituted the major highlights of his campaign. His exploits in the public space is, without doubt, his selling point in his quest of becoming the most powerful individual in West Africa’s richest city, Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu has been hailed by many as an apt specialist in the areas of human development and strategic planning. He has acted in several capacities in the Lagos state government from 2003 to date.

In 2003, during the tenure of Lagos state’s godfather, Tinubu, Babajide Sanwo-Olu was appointed as a Special Adviser by Tinubu’s deputy, Femi Pedro. He acted in the capacity of Special Adviser to the deputy governor on Corporate matters. This appointment set him up politically for the best thing to come. Fifteen years down the line, he’s became the favoured choice to take up the mantle of leadership in Lagos state.

A couple of years after his appointment, Sanwo-Olu was given the directive to oversee the ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, in an acting capacity.

Four years after his political appointment, he was appointed by the outgoing governor, Tinubu, as a substantive commissioner, to head the Lagos state Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The ministry is arguably the most important unit of the Lagos state government, with regards to its work functions.

After the 2007 election came Babatunde Raji Fashola, a candidate handpicked by Tinubu. Fashola relieved Sanwo-Olu of his role as the commissioner of Commerce and Industry. He, however, reappointed him to head the ministry of Establishment, Training and Pensions. Sanwo-Olu held this office for good 8 years. He left the office in 2015, after the expiration of Fashola’s governorship tenure.

As emphasized above, from 2003 to 2015 (12 full years), Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been involved in the core operations and governance of Lagos state. He has worked successfully with two past governors of the state, Tinubu and Fashola.

Sanwo-Olu was serving as Managing Director of Lagos State Property Development Company.  A government owned setup, which oversees housing and urban development in Lagos state.
