Son of the late Oba of Lagos sentenced to death for murdering his benefactor and taking over her business

AgegePulse Magazine

Adewale Oyekan, the 50 years old son of Oba Adeyinka Oyekan, Oba of Lagos, who died on March 1, 2003, has been sentenced to death alongside a former domestic servant, Lateef Balogun, 27, for the murder of Sikirat Ekun, a 62-year-old businesswoman and politician.

According to the prosecution, the prince hired Balogun for N6,000 to murder Mrs Ekun. The convicts, who have been in custody for seven years, murdered Mrs Ekun by strangling her and throwing her corpse in a 1,000-feet well in her home.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that according to the prosecution led by Akin George, the convicts committed the offences at 1.00a.m. on October 17, 2012, at the home of the deceased located at No. 5, Babatunde Lalega St., Omole Phase One, Lagos State.

The prosecution said that the deceased was a restauranteur who knew Mr Oyekan due to her friendship with his late mother. “To render assistance to the prince, Mrs Ekun employed him as the manager of her restaurant.

Balogun, the second defendant, was a former domestic staff of Ekun, who was employed by her to take care of her elderly father,” Mr George said. He submitted that Mr Balogun’s employment was, however, terminated following a dispute with Mrs Ekun.

“The convicts conspired, killed the deceased and threw her corpse in a well within the premises of her home, and took over her businesses and property including a bus which was sold for N170,000.

When any inquiry was made by family and friends about her whereabouts, Mr Oyekan informed them that she travelled to Abuja for the Ileya (Eid-el Kabir) festival. .

He passed this information by sending a text message from Ekun’s phone. However, following worry from members of her family and after an extensive search, her corpse was found in December 2012, by well diggers and firefighters.

The convicts had placed a generator, a gas cylinder and other household items on the corpse to conceal it in the 1,000 feet well,” he said. The trial at the High Court began on April 14, 2015.

A mother, Oluwaseun Folorunsho, has accused a private medical facility in Lagos State, Oak Hospital, of killing her one-year-old son, Ogooluwa.
The 43-year-old mother claimed that workers at the hospital prescribed and administered drugs meant for her four-year-old son, Imole, to Ogooluwa, adding that it was what led to his death.
It was gathered that a medical test on the children revealed that they both had malaria and an unnamed infection, leading to their being admitted to the hospital.
While Imole was placed on drips, Ogooluwa was reportedly given injections.

Their mother told PUNCH Metro that when she gave Imole food to eat, he refused, adding that his vomiting continued.
The Ogun State indigene said despite her complaints, a doctor at the hospital said all was well.
She said, “On Sunday, Imole, who is the elder, started running a temperature. I called the attention of the doctor to it and he said I should not worry that he would be fine. He said his younger brother was already playing.
“In the afternoon, one of the nurses came with three injections for Ogooluwa. I noticed that she used big syringes to give him the injections.

COUPLE, SON, GIRLFRIEND, ARRESTED FOR STEALING.

When Mrs Folashade Odunuga of No. 8 Ade Onitiri, Harmony Estate, Langbasa, Ajah, embarked on a 3-month vacation which commenced on May 27, 2018, little did she know that her apartment  would be broken  into and her household  property including her car, stolen by eighteen-year-old Tega Teddy aided by his parents, Mr. Uroye Teddy, 45 years old and his mother Mrs. Margaret Teddy.

Also fingered in the offence is Tega's girlfriend, one Karima Edom, a close neighbour of the victim, who allegedly passed information of the victim's absence from home to her boyfriend.

The stealing had been going on for weeks until the victim's househelp, one Eniola Abisola, visited her mistress' house and discovered that a lot of items were missing. She couldn't understand how the thieves entered the apartment as all doors to the house remained locked.

She alerted the police and detectives were sent to check on Tega, they saw the stolen Chevrolette Aveo saloon car with registration number AKD 512 AP,  parked in front of his parents' house at New Osho Layout, Langbasa. He was promptly arrested.

During interrogation, he revealed that he entered the victim's house through the ceiling and gradually, he began to  pack the household items to his father's house. He narrated that his mother helped him to hide the stolen items in an uncompleted building while his girlfriend Karima, hid some in her apartment.

The suspect, Tega, further revealed that his father went with  him to the victim's house to tow the aforementioned car. It was seen that Mrs Margaret Teddy had put the stolen properties for sale.

Exhibits recovered from the suspects include: Chevrolette saloon car reg NO. AKD 512 AP, 42 inches flat screen TV, LG Home theatre sound system, electric generator, one standing fan, 5 leather bags, iPad, baby shoes and other personal items.

The Commissioner of Police,  CP Imohimi Edgal, charges Lagosians to take their personal security seriously by ensuring that their houses are entrusted in the hands of trusted relations, friends or aides whenever they travel.

He urged people to go back to our old way of visiting their neighbours to check on them. He added that if that was the case in this instance, Teddy and his girlfriend Karima wouldn't have had the effrontery to cook, eat and wine in Folashade Odunuga's house during her long absence from home.
