Catholic priest dies four days after escaping kidnappers’ den

Theophilus Onojeghen, Warri

The Chaplain of the Seat of Wisdom Catholic Chaplaincy of the Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun, Delta State, Very Rev. Fr. Dr Louis Odudu, who recently escaped from a kidnappers’ den, is dead.
Odudu died on Wednesday, four days after he escaped from his abductors’ den.

Sources in the Catholic Diocese of Warri told PUNCH Metro that the priest was abducted last week Friday and he escaped on Saturday.
Although the immediate cause of death could not be ascertained by our correspondent, it was gathered that the incident was not unconnected with his abduction.

Family, friends and parishioners were still celebrating his freedom when the news of his death filtered into town on Wednesday.
He was said to have been pronounced dead at a private hospital in Warri, hours after he reportedly complained of pains and demanded to be taken to a hospital.

Odudu, who was ordained priest of the Catholic Diocese of Warri in 1987, had reportedly been in the United Kingdom for years.
He was said to have returned to the country about five months ago when he was abducted.

The deceased was a former Assistant Secretary-General at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria.

The news of the death reportedly threw the Catholic community in Delta into mourning, as worshippers discussed the incident in clusters after mass on Thursday.

A source said, “He was just assigned to the chaplaincy at PTI about two months before his kidnap and untimely death.
“It was a black Wednesday for the Diocese of Warri as Very Rev. Fr. Louis Odudu died on the day the diocese was holding a prayer vigil for one of the deceased priests, Very Rev. Fr. Stephen Ekakabor, who died early this month after battling with a brain injury he sustained when he was attacked by armed robbers. The robbers invaded the priest’s rectory in 2017 at his parish of St. Joseph, Okpare-Olomu, in the Ughelli South Local Government Area.”
The Director of Social Communications, Catholic Diocese of Warri, Rev. Fr. Dr Benedict Ukutegbe, confirmed the demise of the priest.
Ukutegbe, who declined to speak on the cause of death, also confirmed that he had just been released by kidnappers.

Catholic priests in the state have been under attack by some hoodlums in recent times, as no fewer than five priests had been abducted in 2018 alone.

Police arrest suspected bank robber, arms keeper

Samson Folarin
The Inspector-General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team has arrested a suspected bank robber, Olatunde Adetunji, in the Isolo area of Lagos State.

A trader, Bashirat Akinmushire, aka Area Mother, who allegedly kept weapons for Adetunji and his gang members, was also arrested by the police team.

Both Adetunji and Akinmushire were said to be members of the Eiye Confraternity.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the gang specialised in robbing bank customers in the Ikeja and Isolo areas.

The suspects were alleged to have recently attacked and dispossessed a woman on her way to depositing money in a bank at Opebi, Ikeja.
Adetunji was reportedly arrested a few days later when the woman allegedly sighted him on Toyin Street, Ikeja.

She was reported to have raised the alarm as operatives of the IRT, who raced to the scene, apprehended the 31-year-old.
The suspect, during interrogation by the police, allegedly confessed that members of his gang usually carried out robberies and cult killings in the Ikeja and Isolo areas.

Adetunji also allegedly said the guns they used during operations were kept with Akinmushire.

A police source told our correspondent that the suspect led detectives to a market on Jakande Low Cost Housing Estate, Isolo, where Akinmushire was arrested.

However, the trader reportedly claimed to have passed the weapons to another member of the gang, identified only as Junior, aka Jungle.

“When she was asked to take the operatives to Junior’s house so he could be arrested and the weapons recovered, she misled the policemen and took them to a wrong location, where she also attempted to escape.
“She ran into a ditch in the process and sustained serious injuries, which made the policemen to stop their search and take her to a hospital,” the source said.

The whereabouts of Junior had yet to be known.
Adetunji said his gang usually paid Akinmushire N5,000 to keep weapons for them.

He said, “I am a member of the Eiye Confraternity and I joined the cult while at a university in Ogun State. When I dropped out, I came back home to join members of my cult on Jakanda Estate and I discovered that they had already procured an AK-47 rifle and a revolver pistol.

“They told me that they bought the guns from a soldier and they usually kept them at Area Mama’s shop, who is also a member of our cult. She normally hides the guns at the back of her shop where she sells pepper and tomatoes.

“She covers the guns with baskets and sacks. We have used the guns for several operations and we used to give her N5,000 after every successful operation. But the main thing we do with the guns is to fight our opponents, who are rival cult members.”

Akinmushire, in her statement to the police, said the gang forced her to keep the weapons because she was a member of their.
The mother of three said she did not know what the gang did with the guns.

She said, “Sometime in February 2016, Olatunde (Adetunji), Junior, and their friend started brining oneGhana-must-go bag containing some items which I did not know the content, to my shop. They usually bring the bag for me to keep for them.

“Initially, I did not know the content, but I asked them what was in the bag and they told me. They said I should not disclose it to anybody. Each time they came to pick the bag, they gave me N5,000 or more. I asked them what they were using the guns for, but they said it was none of my business.

“I know Olatunde and his friend belong to Eiye cult. I also belong to the same cult. But the guns in question are with Junior and their gang members and the reason I did not inform the estate management or security agencies was that they threatened me that if any third party got to know, they would kill me. I have never gone with them for any operation; I only keep their guns for them.”

Man stabs Ekiti monarch to death

Odo-Oro-Ekiti, a community in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State, was on Monday thrown into mourning as its traditional ruler, Oba Gbadebo Ogunsakin, was stabbed to death.

Some residents, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria, said the traditional ruler was stabbed with a knife by a man suspected to be insane after a meeting of the traditional council.

A resident, Mr Henry Olu, said the assailant was from the same royal family as the slain traditional ruler.

Olu said the assailant was earlier seen before the council meeting sitting on the throne and was chased away.
The monarch was stabbed by the assailant while he was attempting to enter his vehicle after the council meeting.
“All we heard was a cry for help from the traditional ruler’s driver shortly after the council meeting.
“On getting there, we saw our traditional ruler in a pool of his blood with a knife in the chest.

“We tried rushing him to the hospital, but Oba Ogunsakin gave up the ghost,” another resident, who does not want his name mentioned, said.

NAN reports that some irate youths in the community took to the streets in search of the assailant who was said to have fled into the bush after the incident.
The youths mounted roadblocks on major junctions leading into the community while the search lasted.
NAN also reports that there was panic in the community, with its market deserted as the news of the incident filtered.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with NAN.
“It is true the incident actually happened and policemen have moved in.

“The person alleged is of unsound mind and he actually escaped into the bush after committing the crime.
“Our men are combing the bush to fish out the suspect.
“All I can say for now is that the suspect is within reach and will be put in custody,” he said.
NAN reports that the late Ogunsakin ascended the throne in 1986.

COUPLE, SON, GIRLFRIEND, ARRESTED FOR STEALING.

When Mrs Folashade Odunuga of No. 8 Ade Onitiri, Harmony Estate, Langbasa, Ajah, embarked on a 3-month vacation which commenced on May 27, 2018, little did she know that her apartment  would be broken  into and her household  property including her car, stolen by eighteen-year-old Tega Teddy aided by his parents, Mr. Uroye Teddy, 45 years old and his mother Mrs. Margaret Teddy.

Also fingered in the offence is Tega's girlfriend, one Karima Edom, a close neighbour of the victim, who allegedly passed information of the victim's absence from home to her boyfriend.

The stealing had been going on for weeks until the victim's househelp, one Eniola Abisola, visited her mistress' house and discovered that a lot of items were missing. She couldn't understand how the thieves entered the apartment as all doors to the house remained locked.

She alerted the police and detectives were sent to check on Tega, they saw the stolen Chevrolette Aveo saloon car with registration number AKD 512 AP,  parked in front of his parents' house at New Osho Layout, Langbasa. He was promptly arrested.

During interrogation, he revealed that he entered the victim's house through the ceiling and gradually, he began to  pack the household items to his father's house. He narrated that his mother helped him to hide the stolen items in an uncompleted building while his girlfriend Karima, hid some in her apartment.

The suspect, Tega, further revealed that his father went with  him to the victim's house to tow the aforementioned car. It was seen that Mrs Margaret Teddy had put the stolen properties for sale.

Exhibits recovered from the suspects include: Chevrolette saloon car reg NO. AKD 512 AP, 42 inches flat screen TV, LG Home theatre sound system, electric generator, one standing fan, 5 leather bags, iPad, baby shoes and other personal items.

The Commissioner of Police,  CP Imohimi Edgal, charges Lagosians to take their personal security seriously by ensuring that their houses are entrusted in the hands of trusted relations, friends or aides whenever they travel.

He urged people to go back to our old way of visiting their neighbours to check on them. He added that if that was the case in this instance, Teddy and his girlfriend Karima wouldn't have had the effrontery to cook, eat and wine in Folashade Odunuga's house during her long absence from home.

After discovering what happened, she reported to the youths who went to the man’s house to beat him up. He was later taken to the community chairman. He initially denied it but later confessed that he did it.”
