Breaking: Nigeria ranks 6 miserable country in the world

 AgegePulse Magazine

By Nwafor Sunday

The recently published report by Steve Hanke, an economist from John Hopkins University in Baltimore, United state, listed Nigeria, Venezuela, Iran, Brazil, others among the first ten (10) miserable countries in the world. According to the report Venezuela was listed as the most miserable country in the world.

Reacting to this Hanke said, “Venezuela holds the inglorious title of the most miserable country in the world in 2018, as it did in 2017, 2016, and 2015.” Economic activities resume expansion —CBN report However, Argentina jumped to the No. 2 spot after yet another peso crisis. Since its founding, Argentina has been burdened with numerous economic crises.

Most can be laid at the feet of domestic mismanagement and currency problems (read: currency collapses). Iran took third in the ranking, before Brazil that made it to the fourth position. Turkey took the fifth position as the giant of Africa Nigeria emerged sixth. The Misery Index was calculated using economic indices including unemployment, inflation and bank lending rates.

For Nigeria, unemployment rate was the major contributing factor to its miserable state. According to Hanke, “The first Misery Index was constructed by economist Art Okun in the 1960s as a way to provide President Lyndon Johnson with an easily digestible snapshot of the economy. That original Misery Index was just a simple sum of a nation’s annual inflation rate and its unemployment rate.

The Index has been modified several times, first by Robert Barro of Harvard and then by myself. Nigerian economic confidence falls by 3% in 12mths — ACCA “My modified Misery Index is the sum of the unemployment, inflation and bank lending rates, minus the percentage change in real GDP per capita. Higher readings on the first three elements are “bad” and make people more miserable. These are offset by a “good” (GDP per capita growth), which is subtracted from the sum of the “bads.” A higher Misery Index score reflects a higher level of “misery,” and it’s a simple enough metric that a busy president, without time for extensive economic briefings, can understand at a glance.

“The accompanying table contains Misery Index rankings for the 95 nations that report relevant data on a timely basis. For consistency and comparability, and with few exceptions, data were retrieved from the Economist Intelligence Unit.” See the data below:

…Says Nigeria On Threshold Of Greatness With Buhari, Osinbajo

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday saluted the role played by National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, saying Nigeria was already on threshold of greatness with the duo in the next level government.

Governor Ambode, who spoke at the 11th Bola Tinubu Colloquium held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja as part of activities marking the 67th birthday of Tinubu, said it was gratifying to note that the next level promised by the APC government was already unfolding, adding that the next four years would engender massive development and service to the people.

"We are all expectant and we can feel the next level unfolding. Our country is on the threshold of greatness because for the first time since our independence, we would have successive administrations of a progressive and visionary government; a government of integrity, a government whose sole interest is the well-being of Nigeria and Nigerians.

"We are lucky to be here in this exciting time; in a time when our country will be led by selfless individuals who have the progress and prosperity of our people as their major objective and we are here today because Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been a very key part of this story.

"We are here not only to celebrate him (Tinubu) but to celebrate the incoming dawn in Nigeria; we are here to celebrate the next level in Nigeria where Nigerians will be served and given what is due to them," Governor Ambode said.

The Governor, who attended the colloquium with his wife, Bolanle, particularly hailed Tinubu for his political dexterity, doggedness, undoubted courage and political acumen, saying the attributes of the national leader played key part in the electoral victory of APC at the Federal, National Assembly, Governorship and State Assembly elections.

"This colloquium is coming at a time when the APC has spread its political tentacles even further in the country and this colloquium is coming at a time when Nigerians are eagerly looking forward to the next level in progressive politics, economic growth, social welfare and increased national security," the Governor said.

The colloquium was attended by President Buhari who was represented by Vice President Osinbajo, Governors, Ministers, members of the National Assembly, royal fathers, political leaders, captains of industry and members of the diplomatic corps, among others, while there were several presentations by government officials and representatives of the private sector.

Don’t pay JSS 3 exam fees, Lagos tells parents

AgegePulse Magazine

The Lagos State Government on Thursday cautioned parents not to pay any fee or levy for the Junior Secondary School (JSS3) Basic Education Certificate Examination for students in the state.

Mrs Adebunmi Adekanye, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Education, said this on Thursday in Alausa while reacting to alleged extortion from parents whose children would be sitting for the examination.

Adekanye said the state government had paid the fees of all students sitting for the examination in the state.

According to her, JSS3 students sitting for the BEC examination in the state should not pay any money to anyone under any guise, as all fees relating to the examination have been fully paid by the state government.

She warned public officials to desist from extorting money from parents under various guises which included payment for practical examinations.

She said anyone caught in the act would face the consequences of their action.

Adekanye said that in furtherance of the free education policy of the state government, all fees for all terminal examinations such as BECE and West Africa Senior School Certificate of Education were fully paid by the government.

She said the gesture was to ease the burden on parents as well as create equal opportunities for all qualified students to sit for the examinations and prove their mettle, irrespective of the circumstances or financial position of their parents.

Adekanye urged students and parents to report any government official requesting for money whatsoever to the Tutor-Generals in their education districts or ministry of education, Alausa, for prompt action.

Agege Flyover of Anguish

AgegePulse Magazine

Abiodun  Adefioye

It should have been sometime in December 2017 or so when bulldozers and other heavy-duty construction equipment moved in to the heartlands of Agege, a densely populated suburb of Lagos, pulling down structures that had earlier been marked for demolition, to clear the way for a flyover that would crisscross Oba Ogunji Road/Pen Cinema area over a railroad crossing and landing in Agunbiade Street/Oke-Koto area of the community.

This was, no doubt, a laudable and timely intervention project in an area that had become notorious for intractable human and vehicular gridlock, which is compounded by the many road intersections and an avalanche of open and locked markets – both structured and spontaneous, as well as unscrupulous elements such as pickpockets having a free day both at daytime and nightfall. And so, the joy of the residents and many commuters around the popular Pen Cinema area knew no bounds, as they could see an end in sight to their daily grueling experience of living in or passing through the labyrinth that the suburb has become.

The residents had every reason to believe. At least, they had witnessed, within the last three years or so, how the construction of such a structure at nearby Abule-Egba, a sprawling neighbourhood on the ubiquitous Lagos – Abeokuta Expressway had not only given the area a facelift but also helped in no small way to scale up the quality of life in the area. I have heard testimonials of people, who had not been to Abule-Egba in a while, scream to high heavens at the transformation that came the way of the suburb. It really opened up the area and the adjoining neighbourhoods. So, this was the kind of transmogrification that Agege residents were looking forward to in no distant time.

I am not sure I can quote successfully the delivery timeline set for the Agege Flyover project, but the local media is awash with evidence of commitment to an early delivery. For instance, as picked from an online edition of Vanguard Newspaper of April 12, 2018, the contractor handling the construction work had promised the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, that the flyover would be delivered by December 2018 “as special end of the year gifts to residents and visitors,” which was a piece of cheery news to all who had been salivating for the bridge to be completed and commissioned for use.And the pace with which the work was being executed from the beginning tended to lend credence to that. In no time, the substructures were fixed, the bridge support structures in form of columns and piers began to spring up and the beams laid at the set-out point. Before long, the superstructure were being fixed and the flyover was beginning to take shape, at least for the first half of it at the Oba Ogunji side, peaking at Pen Cinema Roundabout.

However, this initial pace notwithstanding, it soon dawned on the people that their waiting has just begun, as it became evident that the site has been abandoned and no work whatsoever is going on there. And that is my very axe that one has to grind with the Lagos State Government or whosoever is behind the stalling of this well-intentioned project. Agege is a densely populated area, aside from being a major road and rail transport terminus. What this implies is that the teeming populace that traverse the locale are constrained to undergo a daily gridlock of human and vehicular traffic, while the construction work lasts. This underscores the imperative of speedy completion of the job, which could only be made possible by working round-the-clock at the site. But that has not been the case!

The result is that commuters and other wayfarers on that stretch experience unbearable and excruciating pain on daily basis to cross the hurdle of Agege Pen Cinema and the railroad crossing to their various places of engagement. The gridlock, which starts as early as circa 5:30am each day, especially on weekdays, is further compounded by the debilitating state of most adjoining roads such as Iju Road, Abeokuta Motor Road, Capitol Road, etc., many of which are littered with craters and crevices. This causes corporate workers, traders, students, travelers and all other road users to fritter productive hours, while hoping endlessly for the crawling traffic to move. It is a common sight for these different classes of people to trek upwards of three kilometers or more to navigate the intractable traffic that dots the Agege landscape most days. And that is in spite of the yeoman’s sacrificial job being done by the officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Police Motor Traffic Division and other security outfits, both at regular and irregular hours of the day.

This is the real bone of contention. It goes without saying that workers, traders, students, etc. who undergosuch unpleasant experience before getting to their places of engagement would most likely have their productivity compromised. Also, one can further rationalize that passing through such unbearable encounter months after months has grave health implications for the victims. With Nigeria’s life expectancy data put at a comparatively low rate of 55 years, and Lagos State’s figure even much lower, subjecting the populace to avoidable drudgery is a major threat to longevity and quality life.

The point need be made, however, that the real issue here is not the inconvenience the work itself is causing the people. Such discomfort is a price to pay for development works especially in a built-up area, and so would be borne with equanimity in anticipation of the relief that would soon come. The real grouse is the abandonment of the work site for well over 3 months now and still counting, while the rains are beginning to set in. This can only worsen the plight of commuters who are stuck with that route, and make life more tedious for residents of the surrounding neighbourhoods. It is in view of the foregoing that one would call on the Lagos State Government authorities to, as a matter of urgency, mobilize the contractors back to site with a view to relieving the populace of the daily grinding and groaning on the stretch.

Buhari To Cut Salaries of CBN, NNPC, FIRS Workers

AgegePulse Magazine

There are strong indications that as President Muhammadu Buhari appears ready to assent to a new national minimum wage, following its recent passage by the National Assembly, he may be compelled to prune down the bogus salaries earned by some classes of civil servants in the country, particularly those in the employ of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), among other agencies.
This much became glaring when the president received the report of the Presidential Technical Advisory Committee on Implementation of National Minimum Wage, which was headed by Bismarck Rewane, at the Presidential Villa, on Monday.
Although the National Assembly was yet to transmit the new wage bill it passed to the president for assent, Buhari had on January 9, 2019 inaugurated the committee, with a clear mandate that it should advise the government on how best to fund, in a sustained manner, the additional costs of implementing the imminent increase in the National Minimum Wage.
Part of the terms of reference he gave the committee was that after the new minimum wage had been passed into law, government would go into negotiations for salary review for all the workers who were already earning above the new minimum wage.
The president had underscored in his remarks that it was important to properly prepare the minds of those public servants involved so that they would not be taken unawares when it was to time for implementation.
In tandem with the grievances of organised labour movement, the president had noted that the last time Nigeria’s national minimum wage was reviewed was in 2011, hence it was evident that a review was necessary, despite the prevailing fiscal challenges.
Although full details of the recommendations were still being kept under wraps by the government, Buhari had while receiving the report from Rewane, commended the committee members for their patriotism, hard work, commitment, and sacrifices.
“I understand that you have worked tirelessly to ensure that you deliver the report before we receive the Minimum Wage Bill from the National Assembly,” the president told the members which included Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Dr. Babatunde Fowler, ex-FIRS boss, Mrs. Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru, Dr. Ayo Teriba, Chief Executive Officer, and Prof. Akpan Ekpo, among others.
The membership from the public sector included the Director General of Budget Office, Ben Akabueze, who is the secretary of the committee; representative of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF); Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Richard Egbule; Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare Office of the Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack; Permanent Secretary, General Service Office, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Olusegun Adekunle; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Dr. Mahmoud Isa-Dutse; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Budget and National Planning, Olajide Odewale; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour, Mrs. Ibukun Odusote, and Solicitor General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Dayo Apata.

Metering no longer our responsibility, Discos tell consumers

AgegePulse Magazine

Power distributors have declared that they are no longer responsible for the provision of meters to electricity consumers across the country.

It was also gathered from the Discos that the monetary shortfall in Nigeria’s power had risen to over N1.4tn despite the marginal improvement in revenue collection by the electricity distributors on behalf of the industry.

Data obtained in Abuja on Sunday from the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors, the umbrella body of the Discos, showed that their revenue collection efficiency increased from the 61 per cent (N363bn) recorded in 2017 to 66 per cent (N437.9bn) in 2018.

But this was not enough to address the over N1.4tn shortfall in the sector, just as the Executive Director, ANED, Sunday Oduntan, stressed that it was no more the responsibility of Discos to provide meters for customers.

According to him, that responsibility now lies with the Meter Asset Providers licensed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Oduntan said that with the licensing of the Meter Asset Providers, the Discos would now concentrate on addressing other challenges in the power supply business.

He said, “Metering has been taken off the Discos’ primary responsibility and that is why the Federal Government through NERC came up with MAPs. In summary, the Meter Asset Providers are essentially now in charge of metering, not the Discos.

This latest position by Discos contradicts what the Federal Government announced in August 2018.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, had announced in August 2018 that power distribution companies still had the responsibility of providing meters to customers.

The minister had stated that the Meter Asset Provider Regulation, which was unveiled by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission in March 2018, did not completely remove the responsibility of providing meters by the Discos.

Lagos Power Crisis! Sanwo-Olu, Ambode’s in Cold War

...No Talk on Transition Process Yet

AgegePulse Magazine

The crisis rocking the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which almost polarised it before the 2019 general elections, is far from over as investigations revealed that Akinwunmi Ambode, the outgoing governor of the state and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor-elect, are not on talking terms despite being members of the same party.

Sources in the party said since he won the governorship election, Sanwo-Olu had failed to visit Ambode or acknowledged the governor’s role in his acceptance speech after being declared winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Instead of visiting Ambode, the man who would hand over the reins of governance to him, Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, however paid courtesy visit to President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.

Speaking with Sunday INDEPENDENT, a chieftain of the party and a member of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), said he was aware that both men “have not had any meaningful discussion on the transition process since the outcome of the election”.

He said the frosty relationship between the two men was not healthy for the development of the state, the party and its supporters.

According to him, despite the impression being created that all was well, there was still a great division in the camp of Ambode and Sanwo-Olu and this might impact negatively on the hand-over process if not quickly resolved.

“In the spirit of sportsmanship, it is unfair for Sanwo-Olu not to acknowledge the role played by Ambode in his victory. Can you imagine that Sanwo-Olu has refused to pay him a courtesy visit since his victory?  That is not how to play progressive politics.

“Even in Oyo State, Seyi Makinde has visited Governor Abiola Ajimobi despite belonging to different political parties.  It is not about the two individuals, it is about the progress and development of the state.

“Even in his victory speech, Sanwo-Olu did not made mention of Ambode. Yet, he praised Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Adams Oshiomhole and others. It would have been better if he didn’t mention any names at all.

“To be frank, Ambode made some mistakes which contributed to his travails. Some of the mistakes have been documented in the media and I think Sanwo-Olu should learn from these and not make the same mistakes in his tenure.

“A lot of things happened before the elections, which caused tension here and there.  We are all humans. You don’t expect Ambode to be happy with the way he was treated and denied a second term ticket.

“Also, nobody in his right senses will expect Sanwo-Olu to be happy with the remarks made by Ambode concerning his past before the primary. But, that is politics for you.  The most important thing is for them to work together for the progress and development of the state,” our source said.

However, speaking with our correspondent, another party chieftain loyal to Sanwo-Olu, said the governor-elect, currently out of the country, had no rift with Ambode and had publicly said so on several occasions.

He however added that Ambode too did not pay Babatunde Fashola, his predecessor, a courtesy visit after he won the governorship election in 2015.

“As a chieftain of the party, I can’t speak for Sanwo-Olu, But, I know he has put what happened before the primary behind him and moved on, especially with the fact that he won a governorship election, which is not being contested by the opposition in court.  In fact, Jimi Agbaje congratulated him before the formal announcement of the result by INEC,” he said.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun says it will appeal the tribunal judgment that declared Sen. Ademola Adeleke of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) winner of the September 2018 re-run governorship election in Osun.

Mr Kunle Oyatomi, the APC Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, said in a statement on Friday in Osogbo that the verdict would not stand superior legal scrutiny.

“We are going to appeal the judgment.

“The verdict cannot stand superior legal scrutiny. Therefore we will appeal against it,” Oyatomi said.

The PDP in the state, however, commended the judiciary on what it called a landmark judgment.

Mr. Soji Adagunodo, the Osun PDP Chairman, in his reaction, said the victory was for the people of the state.

Adagunodo said the judgment shows that “we still have men of impeccable character in the judiciary.’’

” Kudos to the Nigerian judiciary and this shows that we still have men of impeccable character in the judiciary.

“Truly, the judiciary is the last hope of common man,’’ Adagunodo said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja had on Friday declared Adeleke winner.

The three-member panel said during its ruling that the rerun election that held on Sept. 27, 2018, was illegal.

The tribunal, therefore, deducted the votes scored by the APC candidate, Gboyega Oyetola, in the rerun after declaring the rerun illegal.

The tribunal said Adeleke won the election at the first ballot on Sept. 22 and the rerun that INEC devised to reach a final conclusion a week later was illegal.

“The declaration of Oyetola is null and void,” the tribunal ruled in a majority decision with one member dissenting.

BREAKING: Tribunal Declares Ademola Adeleke Winner Of Osun Governorship Election

AgegePulse Magazine

The Osun State Governorship Election Tribunal has declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke, as the winner of the poll.

The Tribunal made the declaration on Friday after dismissing a preliminary objection against the petition of the PDP and Senator Adeleke, challenging the September 2018 governorship election in the state.

The preliminary objection was filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate in the election, Governor Gboyega Oyetola, as well as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The three defendants claimed that the petition of the PDP and its candidate was incompetent and the tribunal lacked jurisdiction to hear it.

Delivering a ruling on the preliminary objection, Justice Obiora Obi who is a member of the three-man Tribunal held that the petition was competent.

He also stated that the Tribunal has the jurisdiction to hear and determine it.

The judge held that there was merit in the appeal filed by the PDP and Senator Adeleke, adding that the declaration and return of Governor Oyetola by INEC was null and void.

He, thereafter, declared Senator Adeleke, who represents Osun West district in the National Assembly, as the winner of the election and duly elected governor of the state.

The tribunal also held that the Certificate of Return issued to Governor Oyetola be withdrawn and that a fresh one should be issued to Senator Adeleke of the PDP, having fulfilled the conditions of the law.

It said the petitioner scored the lawful majority votes at the election while the rerun held in the seven cancelled units were null and void and of no electoral effect.

The PDP and Senator Adeleke had approached the Tribunal to challenge the declaration of Adegboyega Oyetola of the APC as the winner of the September 22, 2018, election by the electoral body.

After entertaining final arguments and adoption of written addresses by lawyers to the parties involved on March 7, the Tribunal announced that it would reserve judgment on the matter.

The Tribunal, which was earlier sitting in Osun, was relocated from the High Court of Justice Complex, Osogbo to Abuja in November 2018.

Sports: MFM's Alli showers encomium on players for brave performance in Katsina

Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries FC assistant coach, Alli Suleman Obinna has showered praise on his team after their 1-1 outing against Katsina United on Wednesday.

Alli Suleman, who led the team to Katsina in the absence of head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, who is on national assignment with the Nigerian Olympic team showered encomium on the players for their worthy performance in an interview with MFM FC Media.

“First and foremost, I want to thank God Almighty because Katsina is not an easy place for us to play and get what we have got.

“I really want to applaud the boys for the way they approached the game and at the end of the game we got the one point notwithstanding we still need to prepare and forge ahead for the remaining matches so that we can be in a better position at the end of the season,” he said.

MFM FC were forced to a 1-1 draw to extend their lead in Group A  with six points in a rescheduled fixture of Matchday 9 of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) decided at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium.

The hosts dominated the larger part of the first 45 minutes of the proceedings with several attempt on goal and precise attacking moves but MFM FC goalkeeper Folarin Abayomi  stood his ground and made series of saves.

Katsina United were awarded a penalty in the 17th minute of the game when Abisoye Olawale mistakenly handled the ball in his box. Destiny Ashadi stepped up and took the spot kick but Folarin denied him after a big save.

The Changi Boys had a chance to score the first goal on the half hour mark off a nicely executed free kick taken by Ashadi but his attempt and a rebound from Martins Usule hit the cross bar.

With one minute to wrap the first half, Chijioke Akuneto raced on to a lovely pass from Elijah Akanni who had earlier initiated a move from midfield and put the ball beyond Dami Paul with a screamer from way out.

The hosts drew level in the 70th minute of the exchange through Usule's close range finish. Katsina United made several attempts to score the second goal but the youthful MFM side thwarted all their moves.

The Olukoya Boys maintain top spot in Group A of the NPFL standings with 22 points from 11 league matches.

Breaking: FG closes case against Onnoghen after 3 witnesses

AgegePulse Magazine

By Ikechukwu Nnochiri

The Federal Government, on Thursday, closed its case against the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, after it produced only three witnesses that testified before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT.

Suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen Though FG initially expressed its intention to produce a total of six witnesses to substantiate all the allegations it levelled against the embattled CJN, however, shortly after the third witness was discharged, the prosecution counsel told the tribunal that it would be unnecessary to call further witnesses.

The prosecution counsel, Mr. Aliyu Umar, SAN, told the tribunal that the defendant was at liberty to summon any of the listed but uncalled witnesses to testify on his behalf if he so wished. He was immediately overruled by the CCT Chairman, Mr. Danladi Umar, even as Onnoghen’s lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, rejected the offer.

“This is the case of the prosecution. If it feels that it is satisfied with evidence of the three witnesses, then so be it”, the CCT Chairman held. Thereafter, Awomolo told the tribunal that the CJN would in line with section 303 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, 2015, enter a no case submission with respect to all the allegations FG levelled against him. Awomolo, therefore, applied for record of proceedings of the tribunal to enable his client to file the necessary processes.

The case was subsequently adjourned till next week Friday for hearing of the no-case application by the embattled CJN, as well as for adoption of the final written addresses. Earlier in the proceeding, the third prosecution witness, PW-3, Mr. Ifeoma Okagbue, a staff of Standard Chartered Bank in Abuja, told the tribunal that it was not true that the defendant possessed either $1million or £1million in any of the five bank accounts that necessitated the charge. Okagbue who told the tribunal that she started managing Onnoghen’s bank accounts since 2015, gave a load down of both the opening and closing balance of all the accounts from January 2018 to January 2019.

She said the accounts were all linked to one Bank Verification Code, BVN, adding that the bank had upon securing an approval from the defendant, diverted funds from the accounts into various profit yielding ventures. The PW-3 told the tribunal that profits that accrued from the investments were credited back into the accounts. While two of the accounts are in Naira, the three others were Pounds Sterling, Euro and Dollar accounts. The witness told the tribunal that all the accounts were domiciliary, and were opened and managed at the branch of the bank in Wuse 2, Abuja.

Before Mrs. Okagbue mounted the witness box, the PW-2, who is a retired Director at the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, Mr. Awal Yakassai, told the Mr. Umar led three-man panel that contrary to what was alleged in the media, he said the suspended CJN owned only five houses.

He said it was not true that CCB investigators linked the ownership of 55 houses to the defendant. The witness made the disclosure after he was shown copies of Justice Onnoghen’s asset declaration forms, which the Federal Government tendered in evidence before the CCT.

The embattled CJN was said to have submitted the forms marked as Exhibit 2 and 3, to the CCB in 2014 and 2016.

Answering questions under cross-examination, the PW-2, told the tribunal that he served at the CCB for 29 years before he retired in April 2018. He admitted that the CCB was yet to verify Justice Onnoghen’s assets with a view to finding out if he made false declarations. Aside allegation that he failed to declare his assets as prescribed by the law, FG had in the charge marked CCT/ABJ/01/19, FG, alleged that Onnoghen operated five foreign bank accounts, contrary to section 15(2) of Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act.

FG had insisted that it was the CCB that okayed Onnoghen’s trial based on certain infractions that were discovered in his asset declaration forms.
