German, Bruno Labbadia, becomes 37th Head Coach of the Super Eagles

By Ayodele Ifasakin

The Nigeria Football Federation has announced that it has reached an agreement with German tactician, Bruno Labbadia, to become the Head Coach of Nigeria’s Senior Men National Team, Super Eagles.

NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, said in the early hours of Tuesday: “The NFF Executive Committee has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee to appoint Mr. Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles. The appointment is with immediate effect.”

German, Bruno Labbadia, becomes 37th Head Coach of the Super Eagles

Born in Darmstadt, Germany on 8th February 1966, Labbadia, who won two caps for Die Mannschaft in his playing career that took him through clubs such as home-town team Darmstadt 98, Hamburger SV, FC Kaiserslautern, Bayern Munich, FC Cologne, Werder Bremen, Armenia Bielefeld and Karlsruher SC, triumphed in the German Bundesliga with Bayern Munich as a player in 1994. He coached famous names Hertha Berlin and VfB Stuttgart this decade, and previously, VfL Wolfsburg, Hamburger SV, Bayer Leverkusen, among others, and holds a UEFA Pro License.

Höner led the Eagles to runner-up position at the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations, while Rohr qualified and led Nigeria to the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia.

Labbadi’s immediate challenge is to take charge of the three-time African champions for two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Benin Republic (Saturday 7th September in Uyo) and Rwanda (Tuesday, 10th September in Kigali), with four other matches to conclude the qualifying race following in the months of October and November.

2019 AFCON Qualifiers: Super Eagles Top Table After Libya 2nd Leg Defeat

Three-time African champions, Super Eagles went top of the Group E table in the 2019 African Nations Cup qualification series, with a 3 – 2 victory over the Meditteranean Knights of Libya.
The game took place on Tuesday night at the 18,000 capacity Stade Taïeb Mhiri, the home ground of Tunisia Premier League side, CS Sfaxi.
Odion Ighalo put Nigeria in the lead in the 14th minute and Ahmed Musa doubled the lead, three minutes after. But the Libyans pulled one back through Mohamed Zubya in the 35th minute, while Ahmad Benali levelled the game in the 74th minutes.
Ighalo’s superb finish at the 81st minute consolidated the Eagles victory.
Recall that Nigeria had thrashed Libya 4 – 0 in the first leg encounter in Uyo, on Saturday.
The coach Gernot Rohr’s men lead the table with 9 points, following closely is South Africa with 8 points, after they played a goalless draw with Seychelles earlier at the Stade Linite in Victoria.
The Bafana Bafana had outclassed Seychelles in the first leg 6-0 at the FNB Stadium Johannesburg last weekend but failed to secure a win over the eastern African country.

How Assumption, Oversight Caused Nigeria's FIFA Sanctions - NFF Boss, Amaju Pinnick Reveals

...Apologises For Disreputing Nigeria

Agege Pulse Magazine

Yesterday, Agege Pulse regaled the ugly news of how the Technical Committee of the Federation of International Football Association, FIFA read riot act on the Nigeria Football Federation for fielding an ineligible player (Shehu Abdullahi) during the last 2018 World Cup qualifier against Algeria.

The world football governing body stripped Nigeria of the one point they earned from their final 2018 World Cup qualifier against Algeria and subsequently fined NFF 6,000 CHF (about N2,162, 923) for the development.

Now, NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, has apologised to Nigerians and fans of the Super Eagles for the sanctions slammed on the country by FIFA.

Pinnick, in several tweets on his handle, @PinnickAmaju, on Wednesday, apologised for the sanctions blaming assumptions and oversight on the part of NFF as rationale behind it.

He said, “Good morning. I’ll start by tendering my wholehearted apology to Nigeria and Nigerians for the Shehu Abdullahi error. It is unforgivable and could have undone months of hard work. As head of the Federation, I take responsibility for this. It happened on my watch.

“While accepting the Federation’s fault here, let me quickly explain how this went by unnoticed. It doesn’t change the fact that we didn’t keep our eyes on the ball and will help us in our planned restructuring of the Technical & Competitions Department.

“Shehu Abdullahi got his first yellow card in our very first preliminary match against Swaziland away. When the draws for the Group Stages were made, the Technical staff made a grave error; assumption.

“To be fair to them, throughout the qualifying series, official match documents didn’t even show that Shehu Abdullahi was on a yellow card. For instance, when we played Cameroon, Mikel, Moses and Balogun were put on notice that they had yellow cards.

“Team meetings were even held about how to handle their cards so they wouldn’t miss crucial games. Shehu Abdullahi was never in the mix. Shehu then recieved a yellow against Zambia in our penultimate game, two years after the Swaziland match.

“Another grave mistake then occurred. Fifa sent an email to the technical officer in charge, that Shehu Abdullahi was suspended for the Algeria match. In a twist of fate, that officer was in hospital, with a severe heart condition, battling for his life.

“The biggest knock to our system is the fact that his official correspondences should have been forwarded to more than one person. It wasn’t. We went into our last match not knowing about Fifa’s notice. Not acceptable, I agree, but these are the facts of the matter.

“On the match day, we were unaware, the match officials were unaware and our opponents were unaware. It was a horrendous error and we at the Federation are truly apologetic. We thank God it did not undue years of hard work.

“It was a lack of due diligence in and by one of our departments and we are ensuring that errors like these never happen again. On behalf of all of us at the @thenff; I apologise, Nigeria. Our focus remains. We will soar higher.”

BBC Awards: Agege LG Boss Urges Nigerians To Vote For Victor Moses

...Promises free Wi-Fi Access to LG workers, visitors to vote

As the race to vote for the 2017 BBC African Footballer of the year heats up, football enthusiast and Agege Local Government Council Chairman, Alhaji Abdulganiyu Egunjobi has urged Nigerians to use the country's impressive population to vote massively for Super Eagles’ winger, Victor Moses.

to the Football Clinic while Deji Tinubu and Mrs. Ambode watch

Egunjobi gave the charge after receiving an award from the organiser of Asisat Oshoala Foundation and Lagos State Secondary School Girls Football Clinic for his contribution to the clinic at Agege Stadium.

Recall Moses was nominated alongside Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Guinean Naby Keita, Senegalese Sadio Mane and his Liverpool teammate, Mohammed Salah of Egypt.

In a statement signed by Egunjobi’s Special Adviser on Media, Mr Rotimi Sulyman, the chairman was quoted as saying the winners of the BBC African Footballer Award were determined by public voting.

The football loving Chairman however, urged the people of Agege who are known for having special love of the round leather game to overwhelmingly append their votes for Moses to ensure overwhelming victory for the Nigerian.

The statement reads in pairs: “May I use this medium to call on all residents of Agege to go on the internet, and vote en masse for Victor Moses, who has been nominated for BBC African Footballer of the Year, 2017.

“Your vote will make Moses emerge winner of the prestigious award and become the second Nigerian to win it after Austin Jay Jay Okocha. So go on the internet and cast your vote for him.”

“On Nov, 23 and Nov. 24, I will be offering free wifi access to all visitors and workers of Agege Local Government at the Council while mobilising them to vote for Moses.

“Voting for the award will close at 1800 GMT on Nov. 27 while the winner will be announced on Monday Dec. 11, live on BBC World TV and BBC World Service Radio,” said Egunjobi.

Ex-Super Eagles player arraigned for battering wife

…victim suffered internal bleeding – Lagos DPP

A former player with the Super Eagles, Godwin Okpara, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court for allegedly battering his wife, Linda Oladoyinbo, at their house on Oduduwa Street, GRA, Ikeja.
Okpara played for the Super Eagles at the France 98 World Cup and African Nations Cup in 2000, among other tournaments.

Okpara and Oladoyinbo, who were based in France, where the former played for French club, PSG, had been married for over 25 years, and the union blessed with four children.
However, crisis started in the marriage in 2005 when the wife reported to the French authorities that Okpara was sleeping with their 13-year-old housemaid, Tina.

He was arrested and convicted for the crime.
While he served a 10-year prison term and was released in 2012, his wife got 15 years for child abuse.
Although Okpara was released early on the grounds of good conduct in prison, he forfeited all his property and money to the French government, who also took custody of the family’s three surviving children.
Oladoyinbo, after her release, returned to their house in Ikeja, in May 2016.

However, she was said to have met some persons in the house, which led to an argument between her and the husband.
Oladoyinbo, who wrote a petition to the police at the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, alleged that 45-year-old Okpara later brought some thugs into the house and ordered them to beat her up.
The attack, according to the petition, was because Oladoyinbo questioned the partitioning and sale of the family’s landed property in Ikeja.

One of her relatives was said to have videoed the attack and also took pictures of the injuries sustained by the victim.
Okpara, in his reaction, told the police that the fight happened after he returned home and discovered that his wife had stabbed one of his visitors.

The case was referred to the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions, which issued advice on it.
The advice, dated September 2017 and signed by the Director, Directorate of Public Prosecutions, Y.G. Oshoala, said the ex-international had a case to answer.

The advice said, Facts in the duplicate case file revealed that Mrs. Linda Oladoyinbo travelled to France for some time and upon her arrival, she was denied access to her matrimonial house by her husband– Godwin Okpara; and when she finally gained access after many weeks, she was only allowed into the guesthouse, while her husband’s brother and wife moved into the main house.

Further facts revealed that Mrs. Linda Oladoyinbo questioned Godwin Okpara about the joint property he sold without her knowledge and he beat her mercilessly with the participation of his brother and his wife. He equally brought thugs into the house, who beat her up with sticks upon which she suffered internal bleeding.

This is corroborated by a picture showing severe face injuries suffered by the wife and the medical report from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital indicating that she suffered serious injuries and was found bleeding from the nose and mouth as a result of the assault from the husband. The attached video record from the police clearly shows the suspect assaulting the complainant despite pleas from other observers.

The advice, which dismissed charges of forgery, stealing, malicious damage and threat to life due to lack of evidence, said the suspect should be arraigned on one count of assault occasioning harm.

The charge read, That you, Godwin Okpara, sometime in August 2016, on Oduduwa Street, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, unlawfully assaulted and injured one Linda Oladoyinbo, by flogging her with a stick and other weapons, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 173, Ch C.17, Vol.3 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty and elected summary trial.
His defence counsel, Malachi Odo, asked for his bail in liberal terms.
He said, “The defendant is an ex-player of the Super Eagles. He served his country honourably. We pray the court to grant him bail in liberal terms.”
The police prosecutor, Simon Imohwa, did not oppose the bail application.

When Sylvester Igbonu Hosts Pasuma, Malaika, Super Eagles Stars In Agege

Super Eagles midfielder, Sylvester Igbonu is in the news. This time, it is not about his professional football career rather a lifetime achievement for the attacking midfielder. He recently played host to top entertainers and football stars at the house warming celebration of his newly built country home in Agege, Lagos Nigeria.

Fuji stars, Pasuma, Malaika, Small Doctor alongside Super Eagles stars Ogenyi Onazi, Gbolahan Salami, Dele Alampasu, Benin Republic star, Rasak Omotoyosi, veteran goal keeper, Dosu Joseph amongst others marked attendance at the colourful event.

Prior to the house warming gig, Sly as Igbonu is fondly called, along with some other top stars played a novelty match inside the prestigious Agege stadium. The match attracted lovers of the round leather game across the country and overseas. However, it was sumptuous dining and wining when friends, families and well wishers of Igbonu converged at his new edifice to felicitate with him. The guests were treated to all sorts of tasty continental delicacies and assorted drinks as they danced to several songs from DJ stand.

Sly made his international debut in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualification game against Tanzania on 5 September 2015, replacing Moses Simon as a substitute in the 69th minute. He started his professional career football with Ebedei from 2004 to 2006 and between 2006-2010, he played for FC Midtylland that won the Championship in Denmark in 2015 before moving to FC Ufa of Russia

He celebrated his last birthday on September 8, 2016
