COMMISSIONER ASSURES JOB SEEKERS OF DIRECT EMPLOYMENT

AgegePulse Magazine

Lagos State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Pharmacist (Mrs.) Uzamat Akinbile-Yusuf, has assured participants at the ongoing Mindset Re-orientation and Employability Skills Training of direct employment either by potential employers or through self-employment.

The Commissioner, who spoke at the Mindset Re-orientation and Employability Skills Programme organized for 500 unemployed youths in the State, lamented the increasing rate of unemployment and described it as saddening and very disheartening.

She maintained that several interventions by the state government, especially with the establishment of the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, are already bridging the gap between the employed and unemployed, adding that a change in the orientation of job seekers is also needed for them to attract the right job and also pursue their passion.

In her words, “The Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment has developed a series of initiatives and activities that would ensure that it meets up with its mandate of bridging the employability gap in the State. One of such initiatives is this “Mindset Re-orientation, Leadership and Employability Skills Programme” for unemployed youths.’’

According to her, the dearth of white collar job is obvious in the country and it is necessary to re-orientate the mind of youths to be flexible towards growth mindset and the realities of the dynamic labour market as well as modify their behaviour.

Akinbile-Yusuf said that the government is putting all parameters in place to put the unemployment rate in the state under control. “We actually planned to engage 500 participants under this initiative but I was surprised to see over one thousand participants here. This does not mean that our approach to job creation is not yielding the expected outcome but it is evident that more people are coming into Lagos for greener pasture on a daily basis”.

“It is our intention to properly channel the passion and energy of unemployed graduates towards self-reliant skills outside white collar job, enhance the leadership and employability skills of the youths in recognition of the gap between skills possessed by applicants and needed by employers, considering the huge mismatch in the labour market and also facilitate meeting and relationship between employers and unemployed youths in the State”, the Commissioner added.

She explained further that the Ministry championed the programme as a way of bringing job seekers closer to experienced employers who are interested in recruiting qualified hands, stressing that at the end of the training and re-orientation, over 80% of the participants would be fixed for direct employment or empowered to start their personal businesses.

Mr. Tonye Bodam, Head of Talent Management of Airtel, Nigeria advised job seekers to develop positive attitudes, noting that the right attitude plays a great role in securing employment and in excelling in an individual endeavour.

He highlighted some of the attributes that are indispensable for job seekers to include problem-solving, communication, initiative, self-management and acquiring technological skills.

The Special Guest Speaker, Mr. Oluwatosin Oyin-Jolayemi M.D Daily  Need  advised the graduates to  think creatively and stride to make  difference in their communities by turning their passion into a profit-making venture

Commissioner tasks unemployed youth on skill acquisition

The Lagos State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Pharmacist Uzamat Akinbile-Yusuf has advised Nigerian youths, especially those seeking employment to acquire soft skills in order to fit into the current paradigm shift in the labour market.

The Commissioner, who made the call today at the Youth Entrepreneurship Mentoring Seminar organised by the Ministry, observed that following the paradigm shift, most employers now emphasize individuals’ skill as against certificate qualifications.

She said that the current administration is committed to reducing the rate of unemployment by encouraging the people to be self-employed, adding that the realization prompted the establishment of Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, among other intervention, to champion development, create wealth and employ the people of the State.

Akinbile-Yusuf also disclosed that the Ministry is collaborating with Betti-O Foundation School of Fashion, an arm of ‘Ruff N Tumble’ for the training of 50 youths in the art of fashion design and garments under its Sustainable Enterprise Development Programme, just as it had also concluded partnership with Auto-Medics to train technicians so as to meet the challenges of modern automobile repairs.

“In a bid to encourage the growth and development of Entrepreneurship as the catalyst for economic growth as well as solve the problem of access to capital, the State Government established the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) aimed at providing affordable credit to assist entrepreneurs in implementing their business ideas thereby providing the mechanism for stimulating growth, reducing unemployment as well as addressing youth restiveness”, the Commissioner said.

She explained that the various measures of the government in the area of empowerment are aimed at raising the skill level of entrepreneurs to match the demands and needs of the society, especially with new technologies being developed around the world.

One of the facilitators at the event, Mr. Lanre Oniyitan of Holistic Business Solutions, admonished the participants to leverage on the opportunity of being graduates to do things better than not too literate persons.

He maintained that there is always a business angle to every human activity and challenged the youth to explore the business opportunities based on their identified skills in order to make a living with it.

LASG tasks staff on sound policy formulation, implementation

Lagos State Government has tasked its workforce to come up with suggestions on how to formulate and execute government policies that would address challenges confronting majority of the populace.

The State Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr. Akintola Benson-Oke gave the charge today at the opening session of a workshop tagged: Policy Analysis Development and Implementation, organised by the State Government for Policy Analysts in Lagos Public Service at Ikeja.

He maintained that those involved in government policy process need to possess strong analytical skills and ability to apply a variety of research and evaluation methods within a complex political and economic environment.

The Commissioner said that the training will review the analytical approaches that are essential for effective policy development in modern times.

The training will cover the nature and role of policy analysts and the interaction among social institutions, markets and government. It will examine how to conduct effective policy analysis, manage the policy development process, and produce sound and persuasive policy reports and recommendation to the government, he said.

He informed that policy-making and implementation functions in governance are important because governments are repeatedly confronted with problems that call for apt and appropriate solutions.

Benson-Oke added that challenges of governance in recent time have taken complex features and as such a government of metropolitan state like Lagos must have a pool of skilled, trained and current policy analysts and developers who will assist the government in designing the right, appropriate and sustainable answers to complex and urgent problems.

The Commissioner said that the present administration is taking up challenges to aspire to the highest standards of governance and administration that the citizens expect of the government.

He maintained that all the achievements of the Ambode-led administration since inception is hinged on the quality of reforms and policies enunciated by the government policy makers, adding that there is little or nothing that could be achieved by any government without a robust policy-making process.

He, therefore, urged participants to embrace the capacity development initiative and open their minds to new ideas that might emanate in the course of the training.

I exhort public policy analysts and developers in the Lagos State Public Service to learn to focus quickly on the central decision criterion of a problem requiring attention, avoid the Tool-box Approach to analysing policies and also learn how to deal with uncertainty, Benson-Oke reiterated.
