One of the suspects, Sodiq Sulaiman, an ex-convict, confessed that the tricycle was stolen at 'Ifo' and it was being taken to one 'Mallo' at Idi-Oro for sale at an agreed sum of N40, 000 before they were arrested at Oshodi the Task Force.

While confirming that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police CP Zubairu Muazu has directed that the two arrested suspects be immediately charged to court for prosecutions, Egbeyemi urged residents to be cautious and take proper care of their belongings during these 'ember months’.

LAW TO REINTRODUCE MONTHLY SANITATION COMING SOON - LASG

... Commissioner Meets Market Leaders On Waste Evacuation

AgegePulse Magazine

Lagos State Government on Wednesday informed residents that the enabling law to permit the reintroduction of the monthly sanitation exercise is on the way, just as it held a stakeholders' meeting with Association of Commodity Market Women and Men led by the Iyaloja General of Nigeria, Chief Mrs Folasade Tinubu-Ojo.

The State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, who made the disclosure at the stakeholders’ meeting held in Alausa, Ikeja noted that the invalidation of the exercise by a court is a temporary setback to the reintroduction of the exercise.

He said the meeting, which also had the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Ronke Odeneye and Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegeshin in attendance, was convened to seek the buy-in of market leaders, women and men on the government's zero-tolerance for indiscriminate dumping of waste.

The Commissioner told the market leaders who had not engaged the services of PSP waste operators to link up with the State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and do so immediately as well as ensure that no form of waste is dumped on the roads henceforth.

Bello averred that, in conjunction with the appointed PSP waste operators, a point within the market must be identified where all the waste generated should be gathered before being carted away by the PSP operator.

While assuring the market leaders that the State will not hesitate to sanction PSP operators that failed to perform their duties appropriately, he declared that the Government would have no option but to shut any market that proves recalcitrant, harbours refuse or dumps same on the roads.

He also revealed that as a form of motivation, competitions would be re-introduced to recognise and reward markets adjudged as the cleanest.

In her response, the Iyaloja-General, Mrs. Folasade Tinubu-Ojo promised to ensure that market sanitation becomes a daily task that all market leaders will adopt.

She assured that the association was ready to cooperate with the State government to adopt all methods proposed by the government to ensure cleanliness in all markets and its environs.

LSETF partners Access Bank to launch LSETF-W Initiative

…Earmarks N4 billion for women entrepreneurs in Lagos to grow their businesses

… As Fund Disburses cheques to 600 beneficiaries of the LSETF scheme

AgegePulse Magazine

In furtherance of its commitment to driving equality through gender inclusion, the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) in a partnership with Access Bank on Wednesday, September 4, 2019, launched the ‘LSETF W-INITIATIVE’ to provide funding for women entrepreneurs in Lagos State to achieve their growth objectives and create jobs for the youths.

The ‘LSETF W Initiative’ has set aside a 4 billion Naira special intervention fund, contributed equally by the LSETF and Access Bank, to provide access to affordable finance for female-owned businesses in Lagos State.

The initiative will also provide business support to these businesses to stimulate growth and consequently create employment for the teeming young population in Lagos State. The intervention is expected to deepen the entrepreneurship ecosystem in the State, whilst helping to stem the tide on its unemployment rate.

Women-owned businesses or enterprises with at least 50% women ownership and have been in business for one to five years are eligible to apply for up to N5mllion loan from the programme.

At the launch of the ‘LSETF W-INITIATIVE’ at the Blue Roof, LTV 8, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, the Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed the commitment of his administration to tackle unemployment in the state adding that creating opportunities for small businesses and ensuring that women are in alignment with the THEMES objectives of the administration.

According to the Governor, “There is no argument that climes, where young people and women are at the centre of economic planning, have emerged prosperous, progressive and remain the model of development. In Lagos State, the Government’s strategy is to optimise and sustainably grow our local economy, projected to be the fifth-largest economy in Africa, by creating access to funds for our women entrepreneurs. We are confident that it is an intervention that would create wealth for small businesses and consequently put our young and productive youth to work.”

In his remarks, the CEO and Group Managing Director of Access Bank Plc, Herbert Wigwe said, “Access Bank is fully committed to bridging the existing gap and provide women with the support they need to successfully implement their business ideas.”

“Looking at the number of women present here today, I don’t think the initial N4billion we set aside to help women will be sufficient and based on that, the initiative fund will be increased to N10billion. Through partnerships with organisations such as LSETF, Access Bank will continue to help women break boundaries, reinvent the status-quo and take advantage of opportunities provided by technology and quality financial systems to make significant impact on the economy of Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole,” Wigwe added.

According to him, Access Bank has a long history of supporting female empowerment, offering over 8,000 personal loans valued at over N10.6billion since 2018, with over 330 loans given to women in business valued at over N16.6billion.

Also commenting, the LSETF Board of Trustees Chairman, Mrs Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru, said “The LSETF W Initiative aligns with the Fund’s strategic efforts to actualise the commitment of the State Government of ensuring that at least 50% of the beneficiaries of LSETF programmes are women.”

The BoT Chairman revealed that the Fund is incrementally achieving this objective through its three core programmes. Women represent a total of 5,263 or 50% of the total number of loan beneficiaries and account for 43.54% of the Fund’s total loan portfolio with (approximately N3.07billion) so far.

Also, over 74% of the beneficiaries in our Micro-Enterprise Start-Up Programme are women. Furthermore, 49% of the total 4,909 people trained through our Employability Programme are women.

“That is not all. We have supported 16 female-led start-ups with workspace vouchers as part of the Fund’s Lagos Innovates programme which seeks to make Lagos State the tech-hub of Africa”, she added.

In addition to the unveiling of the LSETF W Initiative at the event, 600 beneficiaries of the LSETF’s flagship Loan Programme were presented with cheques in a symbolic ceremony led by the Lagos State Governor. The new beneficiaries join 10,753 other entrepreneurs who have successfully been credited with N7.5 billion in the last 4 years.

Lagos Taskforce intercepts truck with 123 men, 48 bikes

AgegePulse Magazine

Lagos State Environment Sanitation and Special Offenses Taskforce on Friday intercepted a truck laden with 48 motorcycles and 123 men coming from Jigawa State.

The truck was seized, following a tip off by members of the public who raised security concern about the manner with which the occupants of the truck conducted themselves.

After the interception, the truck and its occupants were moved to the office of the Taskforce in Oshodi for interrogation.

Chairman of Lagos State Taskforce, Mr Yinka Egbeyemi, said the trailer was accosted in the wee hours on Friday, after a security alert from the public. He said his team swiftly responded to the information, which led to the seizure of the truck and its occupants at Agege area of Lagos.

He said: “While my team was on operation, we got information from the public that some people had entered into Lagos in trailer loaded with over 300 people. We swiftly responded to the alert and trailed the truck from Berger area to Agege. We eventually intercepted the truck which carried no few than 123 men and 48 motorcycles.

“We have interrogated most of the truck’s occupants; from the information we gathered, some of them said they were coming from Jigawa State, with 48 of them claiming to own seized motorcycles. The rest of them said they came to Lagos in search of greener pasture.”

Egbeyemi said the Lagos Police Command had directed that a fact-finding panel be constituted to profile the detained occupants of the truck, but he added that nothing incriminating was found on them apart from the motorcycles.

One of the detained occupants, Shuaibu Haruna, said he left Jigawa State to work in Lagos with his motorcycle. He claimed to have a wife and a son, but said he needed to double his income to cater for his family.

Haruna said he intended to stay in Isolo area to which he had already paid N7,000 as accommodation fee.

Lagos Assembly Begins Probe Of Ambode Over Purchase Of Buses Worth N45 Billion

AgegePulse Magazine

The Lagos State House Assembly on Tuesday during plenary set-up a committee to investigate the purchase of 820 buses by the administration of former governor Akinwunmi Ambode of the state.

The House stated that it was important to investigate the purchase of the 820 buses out of the 5,000 buses proposed by former governor Akinwunmi Ambode for mass transit in the state, but which was purchased despite objection by the House of Assembly.

In a motion titled; Lagos State House of Assembly Motion Number 2, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti Osa 2), explained that the House noted that at the Executive/ Legislative parley held at Golden Tulip in FESTAC in September 2017, Ambode informed the lawmakers that 5,000 buses would be bought by the state government.

He stated that the executive proposed to spend N17 billion to purchase the buses in the 2017 budget, but that this was not approved by the Assembly.

"In the 2018 and 2019 budgets, the state government proposed N24 Billion and N7 Billion respectively, but these were not approved.

"The state government still went ahead to import 820 buses at N7 Billion, and out of them 520 are still awaiting clearance at the ports,"  he said.

He added that the House was worried that 520 buses were still awaiting clearance from the bonded warehouse and the Port, waiting to be cleared, and that they were purchased with taxpayers' money without approval.

Hon. Yishawu then submitted that the House should set up an adhoc committee to investigate all the issues relating to the purchase of the buses.

He also stated that the House should investigate the cost of the purchase of the buses and other issues surrounding the purchase to prevent a re-occurence.

"The state government requested waivers for the importation of the buses and it was not granted.

'The value of the buses were overrated. Some of the buses are still in the ports and they are attracting demurrage.

"N45 Billion would be spent on the total purchase of the buses and we need to prevent such an occurrence in the future," he added.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa said in his submission that the House needed to prevent waste because the expenditure had been done.

According to him, "the vehicles are in the ports and they have been there for almost a year.

"The state will continue to suffer if we allow the buses to stay in the ports.

"We should be the regulators of transporters, the state should not operate the buses.

"How much are we giving the buses out should be addressed. We should get the buses to the roads and safe the state from further wastes," he said.

The House subsequently set up a committee headed by Hon. Fatal Mojeed (Ibeju Lekki 1) to look into the matter and report to the House in due course.

Members of the committee, according to the Speaker included Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, Hon. Bisi Yusuff (Alimosho 1), Hon. Olanrewaju Afinni (Lagos Island 2), Hon. Rasheed Makinde (Ifako Ijaiye 2), Hon. Yinka Ogundimu (Agege 2), Hon. Mojisola Miranda (Apapa 1) and others.

The Speaker directed the committee to invite the Accountant General of the state, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, and others that were involved in the purchase to state what they knew about the purchase.

He also told them to invite the current Commissioner for Finance, the Managing Director of LAMATA and others.

In his contribution, Hon. Yinka Ogundimu (Agege 2) stated that the House needed to investigate every transaction that had to do with the procurement of the buses.

He added that It would become a bad precedent if the House didn't do anything about the matter.

"A huge amount of money still needed to be paid on the purchase of these buses. Whoever has erred should be brought to book," he said.

Also speaking, Hon. Rasheed Makinde stated that it was obvious that the last administration did a lot of misdeed in awarding contracts.

Makinde stressed that some of these included Vision Scape and the proposed fourth mainland bridge.

"The House rejected the proposal on the buses, yet they went on to spend N45 Billion on the project.

"Since we did not approve the contract expenditure is null and void, so the money should be refunded.

"The Account General of the State, Procurement Officer and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation must be called to speak on the matter," he said.

In his view, Hon. Rotimi Olowo (Shomolu 1) stressed that the provision of the 1999 Constitution in Section 120 has been flouted with the purchase.

"They told us that they wanted to start a pilot project, yet they went ahead with the project.

"Can we still wait for the vehicles to be in the port and attract demurrage.

"The incumbent Governor of the state should ask for waivers from the Federal Government so that we could retrieve the vehicles from the ports," he said.

The House subsequently went on a break until further notice as the members would be embarking on a lot of programmes such as training programmes outside the country, while it would town Hall meetings across the 40 constituencies on September 10, 2019 amongst others.

The BRT, it was gathered had a total of 60 passengers on board with 20 of them standing.

Announcing the death of his workers, Primero boss Fola Tinubu said there was nothing the BRT driver could do as the truck jumped from his lane and hit the bus head-on.

He said: “A Dangote truck jumped from the regular lane on to the BRT lane and hit our bus head-on. There was nothing our driver could do to prevent the accident.

“Unfortunately, we lost two of our staff and one passenger in the accident. We are working with the authorities to apprehend the truck driver.

“Right now our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the deceased and we are praying for full recovery for the injured.

“All our vehicles are fully insured and our passengers are also insured but that will not bring back the dead. I pray for God to grant the deceased souls eternal rest and we’ll continue to investigate the accident.”

According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osayintolu only one mortality was recorded in the accident.

He said the bus was carrying 40 seated and 20 standing passengers, adding that all the passengers on board suffered injuries.

“All passengers on board suffered various degrees of injuries with one female passenger losing her life. The driver suffered severe life threatening injuries with his leg totally decapitated.

“The combined efforts of the agency’s assets (Medical Unit, Tiger unit, Papa Eagle and Cobra unit) are on ground working alongside LNSC, Police, FRSC and LASTMA to ease vehicular movement and ensure a swift recovery of the accidented truck. Recovery operation is ongoing,” he said.

Dr Yinka Ayandele Pens Emotional Farewell Message To EDDI Staff

AgegePulse Magazine

The level of emotional reactions that filled the airwaves in Agege, Alimosho and Ifako Ijaiye education circuit since the news of the redeployment of Tutor General/Permanent Secretary (TGPS), Dr Yinka Ayandele from Lagos Education District 1 to District 3 are unquantifiable.

Agegepulse magazine learnt that apart from the countless unprecedented heights that EDDI attained under the leadership of Dr Ayandele, virtually all staff of the district are basking in the euphoria of how the enigma's work ethics, discipline, creativity and motherly approaches have improved them on the job and in individual family lives.

Some of the staff told us that since the news broke, they have prayed fervently that the decision is rescinded in order to keep Dr Ayandele at EDDI till retirement due to how she had changed the narratives of EDDI performance from bottom of the ladder to the top in all the district's academic and co-curricula engagements.

However, what looks like a rumour was confirmed earlier today when Dr Ayandele penned a well-worded emotional farewell note tagged: 'Signing Off In Style, The EDDI Way', on her social media platforms. In the message, she expressed gratitude to all the stakeholders of EDDI noting that their unflinching support was invaluable to her tenure at the district.

The message reads:

"Signing off in style... The EDDI Way

One thing that we have been accustomed with in the last 4 years is the fact that excellence being our watchword, we strive to do everything right. Eventually, we achieved myriad of successes and recognitions.

We're signing off my tenure in Education District 1 with another Award of Excellence which further demonstrates the relentless contribution of every stakeholder of EDD1 to the development of education in our community and Lagos State at large.

As I was honoured by the Nigerian Union of Journalists NUJ, Lagos Television Chapel with Award of Excellence in Education on Friday, I am glad to forge ahead with this memory while keying into the Greater Lagos agenda of His Excellency.

In the same vein, one of our teachers, Ms Adeola Adefemi was honoured with the Outstanding Young Persons of Nigeria Award for her excellent performances in the classroom over the years.

Undoubtedly, our achievements in Education District 1 would not have been possible without the brilliance, commitment, readiness and unflinching support of Lagos State Government, principals, teachers, staff, parents, students and other stakeholders of the district.

As I wave you goodbye and begin a new chapter of my career at Education District 3, it is my utmost prayer that EDD1 continues to grow in leaps and bounds.

Thank you for the unforgettable memories through the overcoming of several hurdles to arrive at meaningful conclusions in all our academic and co-curricular activities.

I urge you to transfer all the overwhelming love, support and commitment you showed me to the wonderful personality that will resume as your new Tutor General/Permanent Secretary (TGPS)".

Thank you and best wishes always.

IT TAKES ME FOUR MINUTES TO STEAL A VEHICLE’S BRAIN BOX’ - SUSPECT

AgegePulse Magazine

The operatives of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad, a unit of the Lagos State Police Command, have arrested two suspects, who specialized in vandalizing vehicles and stealing their brain boxes.

The suspects Sodiq Musa, 28 years old and Saidu Atiku, 34 years old were arrested at 27, Awolowo road Ikeja with three Toyota vehicle brain boxes while Ridwan Adamu escaped with the fourth box.

One of the suspects, Sodiq claimed he was a graduate of Political Science from one of the Nigerian University where he studied Political Science before He came to Lagos in 2017 in search of greener pasture.

“I worked in Lagos as a barbeque man in various hotels and events before I met Ridwan who introduced me to brain box theft where He taught me all the antics and styles.”

“We use ‘magic stone’ that is, vehicle spark plug to break vehicle windows without attracting attention. It takes two minutes to loose a Toyota Hiace bus brain box and it takes four minutes to lose a Toyota Hilux box”.

“The spark plug reduces the noise and effects quick break of any vehicle window and we tie the plug in a handkerchief in a situation where we have multiple vehicles to work on.”

In his confessional statement to the RRS operatives, Sodiq told the officers that Saidu was a security guard who works for a company located on that street where they were arrested and had earlier in the day called Ridwan who is the leader of the team to come feast on vehicles belonging to their company which are parked outside the company’s premises but which he Saidu is supposed to guard.

On getting the hint, Ridwan and Sodiq set to action and got to the venue around 1:00 a.m. The broke into two Toyota Hiace and two Toyota Hilux belonging to the company who employed Saidu as night guard stealing their brain boxes before another security nearby raised alarm. This led to their arrest. Sodiq was caught with three boxes while Ridwan fled with one.

Sodiq was thereafter taken to RRS Headquarters, where he confessed the involvement of Saidu. He disvlosed that he invited them for the operation and was reported  to have slept beside the vehicles, which they vandalized and stole from while Saidu cooperated and pretended like nothing was happening.

“We specialised in stealing Toyota brain boxes because they fetch good money in the market. The demand for them are higher than any other brand. For example we sold a Toyota Hiace bus for N40,000 while that of Toyota Hilux goes for N20,000 respectively”.

“Ridwan connects with the buyers of the brain boxes who he claimed are from the popular spare part market in Lagos. We always meet the buyers outside the market where we exchange our loots for cash.

They usually pay in cash and will never wait more than two minutes as we already have an understanding on the prices”.

“Ridwan gives me 40% of whatever we make from the sale of our loots. He has never disclosed where we were to carry out our next operation because he feels he is my boss.

Our target areas are usually night clubs where people come with different types of vehicles. We strike around 1:00 a.m. - 2:00 a.m. when most of the clubbers would have started enjoying themselves”.

The suspect also confessed to have stolen two boxes at a popular night club in Lekki, another at Ogunlana Drive and Allen Avenue, Ikeja. All these areas house popular night clubs and joints in Lagos.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Zubairu Muazu in his reaction to the incident directed the transfer of the case to State CID, Panti.

He  advised night clubbers in the State to be extra careful while enjoying themselves and leaving their vehicles parked where it’s not safe.

Two Brothers In Fake Currency Mess, Nabbed In Ogun

 AgegePulse Magazine

By Felix Mordi

The case of two Durosinmi-Onikoyi brothers could be akin to the common saying that, "Everyday is for a thief, a day will be for the owner".

These two brothers, Sunday and Felix, aged 29 and 22 respectively, had been living a dubious life of spending fake Nigerian currencies until Thursday, August 22, 2019 when they met their waterloo.

They had left their 30, Akala Street, Idi-Oro residence in Lagos for Sango otta in Ogun State, to defray the over N100, 000 fake currency notes they armed themselves with.

Crime Puzzle gathered that, having succeeded in beating unsuspecting traders to the game and purchased eight bags of rice with the fake currency, they moved on to one
Moses Nwese's shop in the Gasline area of Ijoko in Sango-otta axis, where they bargained for two bags of the same item (rice), payed N29, 000 and hurriedly left the scene with their operational Honda Odyssey bus, with registration number LSR 504 AZ.

But, while they were fleeing, the shop owner recounted the money, payed in N1, 000  denomination, only to discover, in shock, that they were all counterfeits, and raised an alarm.

Co-incidentally, according to a press release made available to Crime Puzzle, the Sango-otta Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Godwin Idehai, who was on a routine patrol of the area, got wind of the development and detailed his operatives to chase the suspects, whom they caught up with in no distant time.

The Command's spokesman (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirming the incident in a press release said: "On searching them,#78,000 (Seventy Eight Thousand Naira) fake One thousand naira notes, an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle and 10 bags of rice were recovered from them.

Oyeyemi further stated that the State Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama, had ordered a full scale investigation into the activities of the two brotherly partners in crime, adding that, on the completion of investigation activities, they should be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction.

FBI: Full List Of Nigerians Named In Massive Fraud, Money Laundering In US

 AgegePulse Magazine

US authorities have announced charges against 80 people, most of them Nigerians, in a wide-ranging fraud and money laundering operation that netted millions of dollars from victims of internet con jobs.

On Thursday, federal prosecutors unsealed the dozens of indictments after 17 people were arrested and taken into custody in Los Angeles and elsewhere in the United States.

Most of the remainder of those indicted were believed to be in Nigeria, the US Justice Department said.

A statement from the Justice Department reads:

“A 252-count federal grand jury indictment unsealed today charges 80 defendants, most of whom are Nigerian nationals, with participating in a massive conspiracy to steal millions of dollars through a variety of fraud schemes and launder the funds through a Los Angeles-based money laundering network.

“The indictment was unsealed after law enforcement authorities this morning arrested 14 defendants across the United States, with 11 of those arrests taking place in the Los Angeles region. Two defendants were already in federal custody on other charges, and one was arrested earlier this week. The remaining defendants are believed to be abroad, with most them located in Nigeria.

“The indictment alleges that the 80 defendants and others used various online fraud schemes – including business email compromise (BEC) frauds, romance scams, and schemes targeting the elderly – to defraud victims out of millions of dollars. According to a criminal complaint also unsealed today, co-conspirators based in Nigeria, the United States and other countries contacted the lead defendants in the indictment – Valentine Iro, 31, of Carson, and Chukwudi Christogunus Igbokwe, 38, of Gardena, both Nigerian citizens – for bank and money-service accounts that could receive funds fraudulently obtained from victims. Once members of the conspiracy convinced victims to send money under false pretenses, Iro and Igbokwe coordinated the receipt of funds and oversaw an extensive money-laundering network, according to the 145-page indictment.

“The indictment and criminal complaint allege that Iro and Igbokwe, who were among those arrested this morning, were involved in schemes resulting in the fraudulent transfer of at least $6 million in fraudulently-obtained funds – and the overall conspiracy was responsible for the attempted theft of at least an additional $40 million.

“The fraudsters targeted victims in the United States and across the globe, including individuals, small and large businesses, and law firms. Some of the victims of the conspiracy lost hundreds of thousands of dollars to fraud schemes, and many were elderly.

“This case is part of our ongoing efforts to protect Americans from fraudulent online schemes and to bring to justice those who prey upon American citizens and businesses,” said United States Attorney Nick Hanna. “Today, we have taken a major step to disrupt criminal networks that use BEC schemes, romance scams and other frauds to fleece victims. This indictment sends a message that we will identify perpetrators – no matter where they reside – and we will cut off the flow of ill-gotten gains.”

“Today’s announcement highlights the extensive efforts that organized criminal groups will engage in to perpetrate BEC schemes that target American citizens and their hard-earned assets,” said Assistant Director in Charge Paul Delacourt of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office. “Billions of dollars are lost annually, and we urge citizens to be aware of these sophisticated financial schemes to protect themselves or their businesses from becoming unsuspecting victims. The FBI is committed to working with our partner agencies worldwide to continue to identify these cyber criminals and to dismantle their networks.”

“Iro and Igbokwe essentially were brokers of fraudulent bank accounts. According to the indictment, Iro and Igbokwe collected bank accounts, fielded requests for bank account information, provided that information to co-conspirators around the world, and laundered the money obtained from victims – all of this in exchange for a cut of the money stolen from victims of the various fraud schemes.

“If a bank account with a specific business name was required to trick a business-victim into making a payment, Iro and Igbokwe often coordinated with “money mules” to open accounts that could receive funds obtained, according to court documents. In addition to making the fake business name mirror the name of a legitimate company, members of the conspiracy routinely filed fictitious business name statements with the Los Angeles County Registrar/Recorder’s Office that were presented to banks when the fraudulent accounts were opened.

“Once a victim deposited funds into a bank account or a money services account, Iro and Igbokwe allegedly coordinated with others to further launder the funds. Members of the conspiracy sometimes wired funds to other bank accounts under their control; in other cases, they simply withdrew funds as cash or negotiable instruments such as cashier’s checks.

“When stolen funds were withdrawn as cash, the defendants frequently used illicit money exchangers to move funds overseas, generally avoiding transferring the funds directly through banking institutions, the indictment alleges. To do this, Iro and Igbokwe coordinated the transfer of a victim’s funds from a fraudulent bank account they controlled to U.S. bank accounts belonging to illicit money exchangers. Those money exchangers, in turn, used a Nigerian banking application to transfer other funds in naira (₦), the currency of Nigeria, from Nigerian bank accounts they controlled to the Nigerian bank accounts specified by Iro and Igbokwe. This method was used to transfer millions of dollars to Nigerian co-conspirators without directly transferring funds overseas. The indictment alleges that Jerry Ikogho, 50, of Carson (who was taken into custody on Sunday), and Adegoke Moses Ogungbe, 34, of Fontana, were among those who served as illicit money exchangers for the conspiracy.

“Each of the 80 defendants named in the indictment is charged with conspiracy to commit fraud, conspiracy to launder money, and aggravated identity theft. A number of the defendants also face substantive fraud and money laundering charges.

“Additionally, Iro, Igbokwe, Ikogho, Ogungbe and three other defendants –Izuchukwu Kingsley Umejesi, 30, of Los Angeles, Tityaye Marina Mansbangura, 33, of Palmdale, and Obi Madekwe, 31, of Nigeria – are charged with operating illegal money transmitting businesses. Ogungbe and Mansbangura were also among those arrested this morning, and Umejesi is a fugitive currently being sought by authorities.

“Iro, Igbokwe and Chuks Eroha, 39, face additional charges for attempting to destroy their phones when the FBI executed a search warrant in July 2017. Iro also is charged with lying to the FBI in an interview conducted during the search. The complaint alleges that, when the FBI arrived to conduct the court-authorized search at Iro’s apartment in Carson, Iro broke his phone in half, while Igbokwe and Eroha threw phones from a bedroom window of the apartment. While Iro claimed he previously had broken the phone during an argument with his wife, the complaint details how the FBI was able to determine that the phone was operational until seconds after the FBI knocked on Iro’s apartment door to execute the search warrant. Eroha is believed to have fled to Nigeria shortly after the FBI executed the warrant.

“The charges contained in the criminal complaint and indictment are merely accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

“This investigation is being led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and the United States Department of State provided substantial assistance during the investigation.

“Several agencies provided support during today’s takedown or during the investigation, including the United States Postal Inspection Service, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office and the California Franchise Tax Board.

“Many of the FBI’s Legal Attachés provided assistance throughout this investigation, as did the Criminal Division’s Office of International Affairs, and foreign authorities around the world. In particular, the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office thank the National Crime Agency in the United Kingdom and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Osnabrück, Germany for their contributions.

“This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Anil J. Antony and Joseph B. Woodring of the Cyber and Intellectual Property Crimes Section.

“The FBI in 2017 issued a report on the rise of BEC schemes, and published a recap of 2018’s Operation WireWire, which was an international effort to disrupt international BEC scams. An FBI public service announcement that warns of the dangers of BEC schemes encourages businesses to “trust but verify.”

Reps revisit bill to criminalise estimated billing

AgegePulse Magazine

The House of Representatives has revisited the bill seeking to criminalise estimated billing of electricity consumers by Distribution Companies.

When the proposed law is passed by the National Assembly and assented to by the President, it will become criminal for service providers to issue estimated billing, also known as ‘crazy bill.’

Its issuance would attract either a one-year jail term or a fine of N1m or both.

The proposed law would also compel a Distribution Company to provide pre-paid meter to an applicant within 30 days.

It would also bar the DISCOs from disconnecting the consumer after the 30-day period within which meters should be installed.

The Electric Power Sector Reform Act (Amendment) Bill 2018, which the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, then as Majority Leader, presented in the 8th  National Assembly, was re-presented in July 2019.

Our correspondent obtained a copy of the proposed legislation on Thursday.

The bill is entitled, ‘A Bill for an Act to Amend the Electric Power Sector Reforms Act to Prohibit and Criminalise Estimated Billing by Electric Distribution Companies and Provide for Compulsory Installation of Pre-Paid Meters to All Power Consumers in Nigeria and Other Related Matters.’

The bill had reached the committee stage and a public hearing conducted on it before the last National Assembly wound down in May, 2019.

Big Brother Naija: Who goes home this Sunday?

AgegePulse Magazine

The battle to stay one more week in the Big Brother Naija ‘Pepper Dem’ House continued on Monday night with the nomination challenge between the housemates of Team Cruisetopia and Team Icons.

Having grouped the housemates into two teams two weeks ago, the nomination process is now a challenge format with the losing team automatically having all its members up for possible eviction.

This week’s nomination challenge involved each team member filling ten silver cups to the brim one at a time with a colored liquid substance contained in a bucket. The big twist was that they had to fill the cups with spoons whilst going through obstacles Biggie had lined up for them. At the end of the challenge, members of Team Icon emerged winners leaving members of Team Cruisetopia all up for possible eviction. However, Esther, who is this week’s Head of House, has the immunity privilege and is  thus exempted from nomination.

As a result, the housemates up for possible eviction on Sunday are Mike, Gedoni, Diane, Mercy, Seyi, Jackye and Frodd.
