The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board has said it will no longer register candidates who do not have the National Identity Number for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
It warns that only intending candidates who have the NIN will be registered, beginning with the 2020 examination.
All Candidates wishing to take the 2020 UTME must have the National Identification Number (NIN). Prospective candidates are urged to visit the nearest @nimc_ng office for their capturing.

Vacate defective buildings LAGS Urges Residents

The Lagos State Government, through the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, has emphasised the need for residents occupying defective buildings to leave those buildings and relocate to safer places in order to save lives.
Dr. Salako made this call in Alausa on Wednesday while receiving members of the Olowora Community who had come on a thank-you visit in appreciation of Lagos State Government’s intervention during last weekend rains when a building in the community caved in due to structural failure.
The Commissioner disclosed that some pillars of a mosque erected beside a burrowed pit gave way during the continuous rains and equally endangered several bungalows beneath the pit.
He stated that directives have been given to the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development to seal up all the affected buildings without building permits and were unfit for habitation, urging residents to voluntarily vacate defective buildings in all parts of the State before the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) remove such structures.
Salako restated the determination of the Lagos State Government to attain an orderly and livable physical environment where incidents of building collapse will be eliminated, calling on the citizens to always build by the rule as Government would no longer tolerate illegal building construction.
Earlier, the representative of the Bale of Olowora, Mr. Martins Kunle Sholesi thanked the Lagos State Government for its prompt response and pledged the support of his community towards the achievement of a Greater Lagos.

LASG vows to unlock traffic gridlock within metropolis
…Expreses Satisfaction With Compliance By Transporters

As the seven-day ultimatum issued by the Lagos State Government to trade and transport unions expired yesterday, the State Government has expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance with the traffic laws by the traders and motor unions at Oyingbo and Iddo axis.
Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, who led other top government officials to Oyingbo/Otto/Iddo axis to monitor the level of compliance, stated that there was an appreciable level of success in the efforts to eradicate chaotic traffic in the area, urging transporters to continue in that direction so as to free the metropolis of traffic gridlock as soon as possible.
He explained that there would be regular monitoring and engagement of all relevant stakeholders to ensure total compliance with the State traffic laws and achieve ease in traffic flow as agreed at the Stakeholders meeting on Traffic Management Intervention Plan across Lagos.
Dr. Oladeinde expressed displeasure that most of the traffic gridlocks experienced in the 60 identified locations were caused by various human activities occasioned by their non-compliance with the Law.
Accompanied by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Oluwatoyin Fayinka; Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Olawale Musa and other top government officials, the Commissioner stated that the government would consolidate on the success achieved at Oyingbo to ensure compliance in other identified locations.
At Otto Railway line in Oyingbo, the residents blocked the drainage channel with filth which compelled the Commissioner to give a 24-hour ultimatum to residents of the area to clear the drains or face the wrath of the law.
He said that constant blockage of drainage channels and erection of illegal structures and shanties on waterways is responsible for frequent floods, warning that the State Government would not condone any form of illegality capable of undermining government’s efforts at delivering good governance to the residents.
“When you block drainage channels just as you have done here, everywhere becomes flooded, because you have hindered free flow of water in this area by dumping your refuse into the drains; you have made the whole of this axis prone to flooding, we hereby give you 24 hours to de-silt this drain or face the Law”, Oladeinde declared.
The Commissioner condemned the illegal activities of commercial motorcyclists popularly know as Okada in the area and warned that the State Government will no longer condone their excesses.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Oluwatoyin Fayinka warned that any vehicle, motorcycle and tricycle caught obstructing free flow of traffic through illegal parking will be removed by relevant enforcement bodies, adding that the Ministry will be partnering with the Local Government Chairmen across the State to unlock the identified gridlock- points.
While commending leaders of trade and road unions at Oyingbo for ensuring compliance, Oladeinde appealed to Lagosians to bear with the State Government and assured that ongoing road rehabilitation across the State would soon improve the traffic situation in the metropolis.

LASEMA Secures, Stabilizes Broken Down Truck at Ikeja
LASEMA has secured a broken down articulated truck directly under the Ikeja overhead bridge by LASUTH in an ongoing recovery operation.
The articulated truck which broke down due to a damaged right hub is laden with a 40ft container which has tilted the vehicle to the right side and constituting a great risk to other road users.
Though no lives have been lost, nor injuries recorded so far in the operation, to control and neutralize the risk at the scene of incident, LASEMA has cordoned off the area surrounding the broken down vehicle.
Aside securing the vehicle's contents, to avoid the risk posed by the hazard, LASEMA has stabilised the tilted right side of the broken down Truck with the use of the Agency's light rescue equipment.
The impact of the stability is significant as the risk of possible fall-off of the container has been completely eliminated, as well as that of secondary incident, while all avenues are being explored to resuscitate the broken down vehicle.
Other responders include LASTMA officials that are responsible for the free flow of traffic, while Officers of the Nigeria Police Force are handling security for the articulated vehicle and it's contents.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Mohammed Nanono on Monday said there is no hunger in Nigeria and the nation is enough food to feed itself.
Nanono, who disclosed this while addressing journalists on the occasion of the World Food Day in Abuja, said he is always amused when he hears people complaining of hunger in Nigeria.

According to him, the policy of the government is to produce and feed ourselves and in the process, create the process to empower people.
“I think so long as these bordering countries do not respect our protocols on these very important issues of bringing food into Nigeria, border closure will remain.
“I think we are producing enough to feed ourselves. I think there is no hunger in Nigeria; there could be inconveniences. When people talk about hunger in this country, I just laugh because they don’t know hunger.
“You need to go to some other countries to know what hunger is.
“If you say I miss my breakfast and I get lunch and dinner, then that is all right… part of the problem of overweight is not necessarily the issue of a balanced diet, but some of us stay put without knowing that Nigeria used to be a former zone for migration in sub-Sahara Africa,” he said.
The Minister also predicted that Nigerian farmers would witness bumper harvest this year, regardless of the flood that ravaged some states.
He also gave assurance that Nigeria would be self-sufficient in food production and even export food to other countries in no distant time.

Pragmatic and sagacious politician, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, since he came on the political turf, has never ceased to amaze political pundits, all of which point to the undeniable fact of his ascendancy to the speakership of the LSHA for an unprecedented second tenure, albeit against all odds.
The Agege 1 constituency fifth term representative in the vibrant Lagos legislative house has a knack for making waves at any political forum. Even his fellow members in the House have attested to this by passing a vote of confidence on him by assuring him of their total support in the remaining years of the 9th Assembly
This is because the political titan of sort has continued to hold the state legislative arm as one, thus making the LSHA a reference point to other states’ Houses of Assembly in the country. Today, Obasa has stealthily emerged as an emerging force in the political firmament of Lagos politics, and this is no hyperbole, as Obasa is virtually a recurring decimal in most decisions taken at his party, APC. Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has also been amplifying via his intensive leadership of the party under his watch, on account of his largely unassailable road to an unprecedented fifth term as Honourable member, and foremost principal officer of the LSHA.
To boot, it is very clear that this man with uncommon political mien has gained so much power and influence within the party and even the House which he supremely superintends and wields so much authority. Obasa is now fully in power and the party dares not take any decision without his input or consent. The deeply grass-rooted politician enjoys so much favour and preference for the plum post across all divides in his party.
The sagacious and politically-astute lawmaker has mastered the ropes so well that he is now very instrumental in any decision-making process at both his constituency and the House, nay the Executive arm of the government in Lagos State.

Grassroots Football: Bet9ja, Elephant Cup winners to get N500,000

Ahead of the Bet9ja Elephant Cup, a grassroots football competition in Ogba Ashade, Agege, Lagos, the organisers have dangled N500, 000 for the winners at the end of the 2019/2020 season matches.
Mr Felix Ajanaku, the Chairman, Football Committee, made the disclosure at Ogba Ashade Palace during the draw and grouping of the 14 teams that would partake in the 2019/2020 season matches on Sunday.
According to him, 2019/2020 competition will be better organized than the last season.
“We are going to improve better than last season for both players and the best team this season.
“The most valuable player will be selected and the best team will all be compensated respectively.
“Also the best supporters group will be rewarded, all this has been put in place to encourage and engage our youths.
“The winners will be rewarded with N500,000, while the second and third place winners will also be rewarded with N250,000 and N100,000 respectively,’’ he said.
According to Ajanaku, all the teams are advised to appeal to their respective supporters during the matches to ensure there is peace and tranquility during matches.
Ajanaku said that with the cooperation of the teams and their supporters the 2019/20 season matches would be improved and advanced more than the previous ones.
“The success of the matches and security depend on our attitudes, we know ourselves very well and any team’s supporters that want to cause trouble will be sanctioned,’’ he added.
The committee’s chairman said stakeholders and team leaders had signed “No Violence Undertaken’’ to ensure everyone talked to his people when the matches kick off on Oct. 20.
Ajanaku also tasked each team to pay any fine allotted to them during the competition before coming to the next match.
“Every team must be ready to abide by the rules and regulations which is very vital for the progress of the competition.’’
The competition has been existing for over two decades where many of the teams’ players have earned both national and international offers.
“We thank the sponsors Bet9ja, Nigerbev, producer of Best Drink, CORMART, Ikeja and Agege Local Government Councils for their kind gesture toward the success of the Elephant Cup Competition yearly,’’ he said.
Chief Omokehinde Orejoko, the Matron of the Elephant Cup competition, also advised the players to imbibe fair play attitude during the matches, adding that the tournament was not a do or die affair.
“This is a competition, it is not a do or die tournament, and there must be fair play among the players.
“Teams must exercise brotherliness and ensure the matches are worthy to watch, the games should not scare the spectators away through violence because of the amount involved,’’ she said.
A player, Babatunde Baruwa, playing for Pokilee FC, also thanked the organisers, saying that such take away prizes would encourage them to perform better than in the previous seasons.
“I thank the sponsors of this year’s tournament, and the reward for the winners and I am still appealing to the ex-internationals to come and encourage grassroots football in the country.
“This will not only encourage the players but also take football to greater heights in the country,’’ he said.
The Nigeria News Agency reports that 14 teams were on Sunday drawn to groups to kick start the season’s matches at Ogba Ashade Place playing ground.
Group A has Great Achiever FC, Pokilee FC, Iyalode Mangoro FC, Sango Agege FC, and Oloke FC, while in Group B are Unique FC, Baddy Oosha FC, Keke United FC, Ghetto FC, Omo Better FC.
The third group has Getinge FC, Scope FC, Adura Obi FC and Successful FC.

Emir Sanusi Weeps, Narrates How A Sick Child Died In His Mother’s Arms Over $5

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Thursday wept while addressing the United Nations meeting on Sustainable Development Goals in Lagos.
The embattled Emir of Kano wept while lamenting the economic challenges facing Nigerians.
Narrating how a mother could not save her sick child despite being close to getting help, Emir Sanusi said the woman had walked to the palace from a children’s hospital located just about 200 metres.
He said the baby died in the mother’s arms while she was waiting for her turn to ask for money to buy the drug to save her child.
“And how much was this? It was less than five dollars.
“This is what happens every day in this country.
“Children die because their parents cannot afford five dollars, that a mother will watch her child die because she does not have five dollars,” Channels TV quoted him as saying.

In a bid to ensure teachers and students broaden their horizon beyond the four walls of the classroom, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Nigeria as well as the Lagos Education District III, Falomo Ikoyi, have concluded plans to organize a first of its kind capacity building conference for learners and tutors in Lagos State.
The UNIC and EDD3 took a major step towards organising LAGOS SECONDARY SCHOOLS MODEL UNITED NATIONS (LASS-MUN), envisioned to be Africa's largest Model United Nations conference at a workshop for students and teachers recently in Epe, Lagos.
Speaking at the meeting, the Information Officer of UNIC, Mr Oluseyi Soremekun said; “at Model UN, you broaden your horizons. By learning and networking, you can be part of the UN’s efforts to establish peace, secure human rights and enable all people to live in dignity."
Over 200 students and 30 teachers from 22 schools in the Epe Division were trained on Model United Nations.
The Tutor General/ Permanent Secretary of the District, Dr Mrs Olayimika Ayandele, represented by a Director in the District, Mrs Odunsi, expressed the commitment of the District to ensuring the success of LASS-MUN.

Lagos State Government has declared a state of emergency on various dilapidated highways and carriages within the State.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sunday ordered massive construction work on critical roads and highways across the State, beginning from Monday (tomorrow).
The Governor’s directive followed the conclusion of his series of meetings with eight multi-national engineering firms, which began a few weeks back. After his final meeting with the contractors on Sunday, which lasted for about three hours, Sanwo-Olu declared the commencement of major construction work on the identified highways considered critical to reduce traffic congestions bringing pain to road users.
The Governor said all the eight engineering firms had been given the mandate to immediately mobilise their equipment on the sites and commence major construction works on the identified roads.
He said: “This afternoon, we have just concluded meeting with various reputable construction companies and all of them have been given the brief to immediately commence major construction work in various parts of the State. The exercise will begin tomorrow with palliative work on the selected roads, which are both on the Island and mainland divisions of the State.
“The contractors have been given the mandate to start mobilising their equipment to their respective sites without further delay. Their activities must first give our people an immediate relief on the affected roads so that there can be free flow of traffic even during the rehabilitation work.”
To complement the major construction work on the highway, Sanwo-Olu said Lagos Public Works Corporation (LPWC) would be carrying out repairs of 116 inner roads across the State. This, he said, would be in addition to over 200 roads already rehabilitated by the corporation in the last three months.
The Governor said he was not unaware of the pain experienced by road users in the past few days, which was compound by persistent downpour. He appealed to residents to bear with the Government while efforts were being made to assuage their pains and bring permanent relief to them.
He said: “We expect the rains will begin to subside in this month of October and this is why we are mobilising our contractors to immediately start the major construction work on the identified highways and bring permanent relief to residents. I am giving all Lagosians the assurance that the contractors will start the construction in earnest and will deliver on the terms of agreements reached with them.”
Sanwo-Olu said officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be working round the clock to control traffic on the areas where the construction would take place.
Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Aramide Adeyoye, listed some of the critical highways and roads to be constructed to include Ojota stretch of the Ikorodu Road, Motorways-Kudurat Abiola Way, Apogbon Highway, Babs Animashaun Road, Agric/Ishawo Road and Ijede Road in Ikorodu, and Lekki-Epe Expressway from Abraham Adesanya to Eleko Junction.
She added that the there would be massive re-construction work on a network of roads in Ikoyi, Ikeja GRA and Victoria Island.

The incident which occurred during the morning's heavy rainfall before midday, saw the husband, Mr. Emmanuel Utache, who sustained different degrees of injuries being rushed to a hospital in an unknown destination before arrival of LASEMA for the rescue operation.
LASEMA Officials bagged remains of the dead Utache family and relative and handed over to their extended family members.

LASEMA Averts Another Major Disaster in Lagos

LASEMA today averted another major disaster as a truck laden with 44, 000 litres of Premium Motor Oil, P.M.S, fell on Otedola Bridge inward Berger area of Lagos this morning.
The Incident Commander and Director General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu who was at the incident site since it's occurrence, has assured that all emergency responders have been activated, stating that with transloading of content finally over, that there was no basis for fear as all necessary precautions had been taken to prevent the upturned truck from exploding.
Going further, as part of the precautionary measures, the spewed P.M.S was blanketed severally, while the traffic flow was effectively guided to ensure continuous free flow of traffic for Lagosians as the almost 12-hour operation was concluded about 22:00 PM when the fully recovered vehicle was totally removed from the road to ensure complete free flow of traffic.
The Director of Operations, Engineer Akinsanya Olatunde, reaffirmed the Agency's commitment and total control of the situation with it's effective coordination and supervision of the recovery process which he attributed to being responsible for the situation of no loss of lives, no injuries to lagosians nor damages to assets which were deployed at the incident scene.

REPS PASS BILL TO CRIMINALISE ESTIMATED BILLINGS BY DISCOS
The House of Representatives on Thursday passed three bills sponsored by the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, one of which seeks to criminalise estimated billing of electricity consumers by distribution companies.
When the proposed law is concurred with by the Senate and assented to by the President, it will become criminal for service providers to issue estimated bills, also known as ‘crazy bills’, issuance of which would attract either a one-year jail term or a fine of N1m or both.
The proposed law would also compel a distribution company to provide prepaid meter to an applicant within 30 days, while barring the DISCOs from disconnecting the consumer after the 30-day period within which meter should be installed.
The Electric Power Sector Reform Act (Amendment) Bill 2018, which Gbajabiamila, then as Majority Leader, presented in the Eighth National Assembly, was re-presented in July 2019.
The bill is entitled, ‘A bill for an act to amend the electric power sector reforms Act to prohibit and criminalise estimated billing by electricity distribution companies and provide for compulsory installation of pre-paid meters to all power consumers in Nigeria and other related matters.’
Leading the debate on the bill, Gbajabiamila condemned the DISCOs for whimsically issuing estimated bills on a monthly basis.
“This billing is not known by any scientific rule,” he stated.
The House also passed a bill seeking to to make Federal Government ministries, departments and agencies reserve 20 per cent of job slots for persons living with disabilities.
It is entitled, “A bill for an act to provide that 20 per cent of jobs available in all Federal Government ministries, departments, agencies and companies be distributed amongst the physically challenged persons in Nigeria and for other matters connected thereto.’
Another bill passed was one seeking to create a bank that grants interest-free loans to students of tertiary institutions in the country.
The bill is entitled, ‘A bill for an act to provide easy access to higher education for Nigerians through interest-free loans Nigerian Education Bank established in this act with a view to providing education for all Nigerians.’
The bill stated that the provision of the proposed law shall apply to all matters pertaining to the application and grant of loans to Nigerians seeking admission into institutions of higher learning in Nigeria through the Nigerian Education Bank.

"I am immensely grateful to Almighty Allah Who Has preserved us to witness this beautiful day and historically occasion. Today marks a triumph for me, my executives and entire of Lagos State NURTW members, although journey has not been easy but thanks to the prayer, Fasting, support and determination of our people and strong support from my well wishers home and abroad.

The literacy level of the people of Agege is set to witness a great lift if the information at our disposal comes to reality. This is because the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) says it will set up a branch of the University in Agege, a surbub of Lagos State.
This great news was disclosed yesterday during a courtesy call on the palace of Olu of Agege kingdom, HRM Oba Kamila Oyedeji Isiba, Alaige of Orile Agege, HRM, Oba Hakeem Ambaliu Agbedeyi, and Sarkin Hausawan, Alhaji Musa Muhammed Dongo Kadai by the delegate members of the Advocacy Committee of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). The team was led by the Director of NOUN'S Lagos study center, Prof. A.G. Sulaimon.
AgegePulse gathered that the delegation on behalf of the Vice Chancellor of the institution came to inform the Royal Father and his Chiefs of their intention to establish a national open university center within his domain, Agege.
Prof.Sulaimon while addressing the custodian of the culture and tradition in Agege, expressed satisfaction on the peaceful co-existence of diversed ethnical residence of Agege kingdom, stressing that Agege kingdom is an ideal place for the establishment of NOUN.
He therefore solicited for the support of his Royal Majesty in mobilizing prominent sons amd daughters and corporate bodies operating within the area to support the drive to bring education close through the provision of infrastructure for the establishment of open university of Nigeria study center in Agege community.
In his response, the Olu of Agege kingdom expressed gratitude to the Management of the school for counting Agege worthy of such great establishment, he however pledged his total support towards realising this goal while reassuring the visitors of his people's warm hospitality after the establishment of NOUN in Agege.

Lagos Exams Board releases 2019 BECE Results

The Lagos State Examinations Board has announced the release of the 2019 Basic Education Certificate Examination results.
A release issued today by the Office of the Director, Lagos State Examinations Board, Dr. Oluwafemi Hassan stated that all Government Public Junior Secondary Schools should collect their schools' results from their district headquarters, informing that registered approved Private Junior Secondary Schools should collect theirs from respective Liaison officers.
According to him, the results were released after the conclusion of the Award Meeting where criteria for awarding scores in the 10 subjects recorded during the conduct of the exams were decided by all stakeholders.
He disclosed that the meeting was held to ensure that the results reflect the true performance of the candidates in line with the present administration's commitment to raise the bar of excellence and improve the quality of education in the State.
Recall that the BECE conducted in July 2019 was to test the suitability of students for promotion from JSS3 to SSS1 and only candidates who have six credits, including English Studies and Mathematics, would be promoted to SSS1.

Agege council chairman bags NAPTIP award in fight against human trafficking

The Chairman of Agege Local Government of Lagos State, Mr Ganiyu Egunjobi, on Wednesday bagged an award of excellence and exemplary leadership in fight against human trafficking in the area.
The Nigeria News Agency reports that the award was presented to Egunjobi in Lagos by Julie Okah-Donlie, Director General, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NATIP).
Speaking during the ceremony, the NAPTIP boss said that the award was in recognition of Egunjobi’s involvement in fight against human trafficking beyond “mere political rhetoric”.
“NAPTIP has recorded no fewer than 404 convictions, while many cases are still pending in court and investigation of many still ongoing.
“Over 17, 000 passed through the NATIP shelters, given psychosocial support, provided skills, education, medical support, empowerment and reintegrated with their families and society,” she said.
The NAPTIP DG said that five survivors trained by the agency had been absorbed as staff of the council with the support of its partners.
“This therefore explain why the giant step taken by the chairman in empowering numerous Agege people remain commendable.
“As little as this may appear to be in the eyes of some critics, it has saved numerous lives, restores hope to the hopeless.
“It mends broken homes and restores future of many future leaders within and even outside the council area,” she added.
In his remarks, Egunjobi thanked the NAPTIP DG for the award adding that it was the first award he would receive such prize in person.
“This is the first award I will present myself to receive an award and I choose to receive it because it touches and so dear to me.
“If not for God and my parent, I would have also been a victim too. I have seen so many people who have traveled to Libya and other countries ignorantly.
“It is a dangerous journey, many of them were being deceived by the so called agents who tell them “See Morocco See Spain”.
“Majority of them did not embark on the journey willingly but convinced, deceived of getting greener pasture abroad.
“That is why we made empowerment a priority in the local government, we ensure about 25 people are being empowered on monthly basis at the grassroots level to discourage human trafficking within the community,” Egunjobi said.
The council chairman appealed to the monarchs, community and market leaders to advise their people to desist from aiding and abetting any form of human trafficking.
Egunjobi said he dedicated the award to people who traveled out of ignorant thereby maltreated out there and suffered unjustly. (NAN)

Friday Ojabor was shot in the abdomen and the police from Ogudu Police Station on getting the distress call promptly rushed to the scene. They took him to several hospitals who couldn't handle the severity of his injuries before taking him to LASUTH.
At LASUTH, SP Celestina Kalu stood as his surety, covered all the expenses and offered to donate blood during the surgical procedure.
Her magnanimous attitude saved the life of an innocent young man.
We must not lose sight the important message the worthy conduct of SP Kalu is teaching us; and that is for us to be our brother's keeper. We must not turn our eyes from those in distress who need the next moment to stay alive.

LAGOS ASSEMBLY APPEALS TO NASS OVER ELECTRICITY EXTORTION

Lagos State House of Assembly under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has called on the National Assembly to expedite actions over the estimated electricity bill.
Hon. Rotimi Olowo who raised the issue Under Matters of Urgent Public Importance expressed dismay over the way EKO and IKEJA electricity companies have been extorting lagosians with exorbitant estimated bills.
Hon. The House concluded that in view of the extortion and lack of commitment of the distribution companies, the National Assembly should expedite action on the estimated bill decision and the Electric Commission should scrutinise the activities of the DISCO & IKEJA over the extortion.

UNILAG LECTURER, DR. BONIFACE ALLEGEDLY DRINKS RAT POISON IN AN ATTEMPT TO COMMIT SUICIDE

A web user has claimed that the University of Lagos lecturer, Dr. Boniface, who was exposed in a 13 minutes video by BBC Africa, attempted suicide on Monday.
The user revealed that the lecturer was rushed to the Reddington hospital where he is currently under supervision.
According to the documentary published by BBC, the lecturer was filmed making sexual demands to an undercover journalist, Kiki Mordi, who had posed as a 17-year-old admission seeker.
A close family friend has also confirmed that the lecturer was admitted to the hospital after he drank rat poison in an attempt to kill himself.
In the late hours of Monday evening, Dr. Boniface was found on the floor unconscious with bubbles in his mouth before he was immediately taken to the hospital.
The lecturer has been suspended from the institution and asked to step down from ministerial duties by the church.

EFCC Arrests Five Undergraduates, Twelve Others For Alleged Internet Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office, on Monday, October 7, 2019, arrested 17 suspected internet fraudsters among whom were five who claimed to be students of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti.
The suspects were arrested in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, following meticulous consideration of intelligence reports detailing their alleged involvement in internet fraud and other related offenses.
Before the arrest, operatives of the Commission in the zone had conducted preliminary investigations to ascertain the merits of the allegations against them.
After establishing substantive facts, the EFCC sprang into action and effected the arrest on Monday.
While five of the suspects claimed to be students of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, others said they were into various vocations.
Some items used in perpetrating the crime were recovered from them and registered as exhibits to be tendered in court.
The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

Lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday passed a vote of confidence on the Speaker of the House, RT Honourable Mudashiru Obasa
This was sequel to an Urgent Matter of Public Importance raised by Hon. Tunde Braimoh representing Kosofe Constituency 2 during plenary.
Braimoh noted in his submission that the Speaker had done well since he assumed office with his leadership style and people oriented Motions and Bills that have changed the lives of the people of the state.
The lawmaker went ahead to commend the Speaker for doing a good job.
"I, Hon. Tunde Braimoh, representing the good people of Kosofe Constituency 2 hereby move and propose that a vote of total confidence be passed on the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa," he said.
This was supported by Hon. Rasheed Makinde, representing Ifako/Ijaiye Constituency 2 and it was then adopted as the decision of the whole lawmakers in the House through a voice vote.
Commenting on the matter, Hon. Yinka Ogundimu (Agege 2) stated that Speaker Obasa had been a blessing to the Assembly and that he had done a lot as the Speaker of the House.
Also speaking, Hon. Fatai Mojeed (Ibeju Lekki 1) recalled that few weeks ago, the people of Lagos State celebrated the achievements of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, adding that this was made possible because of the activities of the House. While lending his voice to the matter, Hon. Bisi Yusuff (Alimosho Constituency 1) stated that Speaker Obasa was courageous and that he believed in the cause of Lagos State House of Assembly and in that of Lagos State.
"You can be very stubborn, but it is always for a cause. The House is above an individual or anybody. Out of the three arms of government only the legislature was not regarded, but you have raised the bar, so you can continue to be stubborn," he said.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Wasiu Sanni-Eshinlokun, who also spoke on the matter, said that he aligned with all the accolades being showered on the Speaker.
Eshinlokun attested that the Lagos State House of Assembly was doing very well in the 9th Assembly, adding that this rubbed off on the Speaker of the House.
While wishing the Speaker well, Eshinlokun said that this was just the beginning and that they expected that the lawmakers would blaize so many trails in the 9th Assembly.
Also speaking, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade (Ikorodu 1) said that for an executive to accomplish good things it must have good legislature.
Agunbiade added that the legislature could not be successful without good leaders, which he said is headed by the Speaker.
He said that it was unanimous that Speaker Obasa, who he called the symbol of the Lagos State House of Assembly had been very impressive.
"Since the tenure is not ending today it means you still need to do more works. I pray that God will give you more wisdom and more grace to do the work," he said.
In his comments, Hon. Noheem Adams (Eti Osa 1) said that if people were showering accolades on the Speaker, he deserved it, and that it was not a falacy.
He said: "Your bill on LNSC that became law, anti-kidnapping law, Cancer Institute Law as well as the promotion of Yoruba Language Law have become very important.
"You were given several awards and you were made the Chairman of Conference of Speakers as part of your good deeds," he said.
In his submission, Hon. Ibrahim Layode (Badagry 1) recalled that the House was inaugurated 40 years ago and that the whole world was watching the proceedings.
Layode stressed that "they would see that we are celebrating one of us.
"I want to plead that you should continue to do what you have been doing, which made people to praise you.
"I don't want you to be carried away by the accolades despite all that our people have said.
"The reward for hardwork is more work. Look at the direction of where you have not been doing well. We can still discuss on some of these areas, where you have not done well later."

said that irrespective of the differences that the lawmakers might had, they all stood firm behind the Speaker on his leadership.
The Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Olumuyiwa Jimoh commended the Speaker for the anti-kidnapping law, LNSC Law and the Yoruba Compulsion law.
Jimoh stated that Obasa had done well as a lawmaker and Speaker, and that "I join my colleagues to pass a vote of confidence on you."
In his comment, Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu (Ikeja 2) described Speaker Obasa as a renowned politician with a good sense of equity and good judgment.
Kasunmu emphasised that the Speaker was one of the masters of the game, and that the Speaker of Uganda made reference to his achievements as a performing Speaker.
"All the way to the United States of America and other parts of Africa you are recognized because you understand the workings of the legislature.
"You do this in conjunction with the executive and judiciary.
You are one of the best Speakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
"A lot of resolutions and laws have been passed under your tenure. I want to also join others to support your leadership," he said.
Hon. David Setonji (Badagry 2) reiterated the creation of LSNC was based the initiative of Obasa, which he said had reinforced the security of Lagos State as he said that they work with other security agencies in the state.
He also made reference to the stakeholders meeting held annually by the House, adding that this had never happened in the country and that others have copied it.
"Whatever happens outside does not concern us because you are doing well. We are solidly behind you, we pray that you will end your tenure well," he said.
This was corroborated by Hon. Nurein Akinsanya, (Mushin 1), who described Obasa as a boss, who he said could not be compared with any other lawmaker in the Assembly.
He urged him to continue to rule the House "because you are treating us well. You are not money conscious. I will like to support the motion that you should go on with your good works."
Hon. Victor Akande (Ojo 1) said that he was a living witness to the leadership style and wisdom of the Speaker.
"When we came here in the 8th Assembly, seven out of eight PDP lawmakers joined you because of your style.
"For being an embodiment of knowledge, I say thank you. During the primaries, you called all of us individually as a good leader and father.
"You are a selfless leader and a man of unflinching dexterity.
"You are the only man that allows live streaming of the proceedings of the House. You have my support," he said.
In his comments, Hon. Rotimi Olowo (Shomolu 1) said that he could attest to Speaker Obasa's administrative acumen, and that he had done a lot to make the lawmakers feasible in their constituencies.
Olowo added that Obasa had made them relevant among their people through the stakeholders meeting.
"The training you exposed us to have also improved us as members of the House.
"The movement of Lagos State to the next level has also shown your good leadership style.
"You always want to ensure that Lagos State is not enmeshed in debts.
"You have sponsored bills and motions through proxies in the House.
"You are a selfless man as you ensure that you defended the autonomy of both the legislature and the judiciary.
"You even discussed this with President Muhammadu Buhari. You are a self made man, you are a selfless man and a great man," he stated.
Other lawmakers also spoke on the matter and eulogised Speaker Obasa for his leadership style.
Responding, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa thanked the members for their comments.
Obasa stressed that all what the lawmakers had said would not have been possible without their support.
"You have been able to sustain the House as being above common standard of excellence.
"In the past, people used to come to the Assembly once, but now people have been coming twice, three times, four times and even five times.
"It means we have all been doing well which is why people have been returning us.
"We have contributed a lot to the the development of democracy. I want to urge you all to continue to do your best for the state," he said.
The Speaker thanked all those that had been pointing his attention to areas of importance including the staff of the Assembly, and promised to continue to protect the interest of the lawmakers and that of the Assembly generally.
Lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday passed a vote of confidence on the Speaker of the House, RT Honourable Mudashiru Obasa
This was sequel to an Urgent Matter of Public Importance raised by Hon. Tunde Braimoh representing Kosofe Constituency 2 during plenary.
Braimoh noted in his submission that the Speaker had done well since he assumed office with his leadership style and people oriented Motions and Bills that have changed the lives of the people of the state.
The lawmaker went ahead to commend the Speaker for doing a good job.
"I, Hon. Tunde Braimoh, representing the good people of Kosofe Constituency 2 hereby move and propose that a vote of total confidence be passed on the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa," he said.
This was supported by Hon. Rasheed Makinde, representing Ifako/Ijaiye Constituency 2 and it was then adopted as the decision of the whole lawmakers in the House through a voice vote.
Commenting on the matter, Hon. Yinka Ogundimu (Agege 2) stated that Speaker Obasa had been a blessing to the Assembly and that he had done a lot as the Speaker of the House.

Fatai Mojeed (Ibeju Lekki 1) recalled that few weeks ago, the people of Lagos State celebrated the achievements of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, adding that this was made possible because of the activities of the House. Two suspected robbers, who lured a computer dealer to a desolate location and dispossessed him of 3 Apple laptops valued at N1.5 million, at gun point have been arrested by the operatives of the Lagos Rapid Response Squad.
The suspects, Victor Remi (27), a forex trader and Ekeh Maxwell, 23, a musician, were arrested on Monday, weeks after their heist.
The suspects, both residents of 18, Alexandra Street, Abule Egba, Lagos, disclosed that they got all the details of their victim through his twitter handle.
They added that they opened up conversation with him immediately and placed an order for two Apple laptops (MacBook Pro – 2018 edition).
According to Remi, a South Africa returnee, “I told the dealer I was the Managing Director of a new company in Acme Road, Ikeja. I also told him that my daughter recommended him and that his laptops are legit. I ordered one for myself and another for my secretary.
It took us a week to initiate, perfect our plan and execute it. My colleague, Maxwell borrowed his brother’s Camry (FKJ 833 EZ) for the deed. We bought a toy gun and painted it. I controlled the dealer to Acme Crescent because we knew the location was a desolate area”.
He continued; “while Maxwell drove, I whatsapped the dealer that he brings the consignment to my office. I told him that my driver would pick him up at Acme Crescent.
We met him there. He entered the vehicle while the driver picked me up few meters from where he entered. He was sitting in front with the laptops. I placed the gun on his neck and ordered him to surrender them. We wanted to take his phone too but he pleaded not to be stripped of everything. We told him to alight from the car and we escaped”.
Sources disclosed that Remi told his accomplice that the three Apple laptops were two instead of three. The source added that Remi lied to his partner that he sold each of the two laptops, N250,000 each instead of the N500,000:00 their original market value which he sold them. “He gave Maxwell N250,000:00”, he added. The suspect confirmed this to our reporter, when questioned.
According to the computer dealer, who does not want his name in print, “one Uche ordered for two Apple laptops. We were communicated on WhatsApp. I never had an inkling that they were robbers. They used a gun and knife to dispossess me of the laptops. The three laptops are worth N1.5 million”.
The three Apple laptops have so far been recovered from their buyers while they reportedly threw away the toy gun after the operation.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Zubairu Muazu in his reaction to the arrest of the suspects advised Lagosians to moderate the amount of information they expose publicly through the social media, adding that criminal minded elements are exploiting the social media to perpetrate crime. He restated the commitment of the Command to remain unrelenting in the pursuit of criminals in the state.

LAGOS DIRECTS OWNERS OF PROPERTIES ON DRAINAGE RIGHT OF WAYS TO REMOVE THEM

Lagos State Government on Friday read the riot act to residents and property owners in the state who have built on the Right of Way of various drainage channels in the state to remove such properties immediately or have them removed by agents of the state government.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Drainage and Water Resources, Engineer Joe Igbokwe, the State Government warns that the several efforts it is making in ensuring free flow of water is being hampered by the activities of several individuals who have built across drainage channels thus causing flooding.
He cited the specific example of Bayo Osinowo street near China Town Unit system as one of such flagrant disregard for the state drainage masterplan, stressing that all the structures on that corridor are illegal structures obstructing the free flow of water in the China Town Drainage system and must go.
Igbokwe said severally, the property owners in the area have been served with contravention notices by the state government, but they have been recalcitrant and have even gone a step further by resorting to self help all in the quest to gain public sympathy.
He described the hiring of a buggy by some of the residents of Bayo Osinowo street in China Town to clear the canal in what they term as “self help” amidst media blitz as an exercise in futility, self serving and cosmetics, stating that all the structures as presently constructed on that street are on the RIght of Way of the China Town alignment, constituting the major impediment to free flow of water from the drains.
The Special Adviser maintained that this warning will serve as a final notice to residents of all such areas where permanent structures have been erected on the Right of Way of various channels and canals to remove all such structures immediately or have them removed by the state.
He reiterated the commitment of the present administration to safety of lives and properties of every resident, adding that the government will not fold its arms and allow the activities of a few selfish and lawless individuals to put the lives of millions of law abiding citizens in peril.
He emphasized that the state continues to deploy more men to the various locations in the state where it’s flood abatement gangs are operating to compliment the efforts of the main contractor that is saddled with the task of cleaning up all the drainage channels in the state.
Lagos State Government on Friday read the riot act to residents and property owners in the state who have built on the Right of Way of various drainage channels in the state to remove such properties immediately or have them removed by agents of the state government.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Drainage and Water Resources, Engineer Joe Igbokwe, the State Government warns that the several efforts it is making in ensuring free flow of water is being hampered by the activities of several individuals who have built across drainage channels thus causing flooding.
He cited the specific example of Bayo Osinowo street near China Town Unit system as one of such flagrant disregard for the state drainage masterplan, stressing that all the structures on that corridor are illegal structures obstructing the free flow of water in the China Town Drainage system and must go.
Igbokwe said severally, the property owners in the area have been served with contravention notices by the state government, but they have been recalcitrant and have even gone a step further by resorting to self help all in the quest to gain public sympathy.

Court grants Sowore N100m bail, restricts him to Abuja

A federal high court in Abuja on Friday granted a N100 million bail to Omoyele Sowore, convener of #RevolutionNow Movement.
Sowore has been in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since August 3 when he was arrested in Lagos.
A court had earlier granted him bail but the secret police refused to release him while he was arraigned on September 30, alongside Olawale Bakare, his co-defendant, on a 7-count charge of felony brought against him by the federal government.
At the court on Friday, Ijeoma Ojukwu, the presiding judge, held that the prosecution failed to show good reasons why the defendants should not be granted bail since the offences are bailable.
The judge also granted a N50 million bail to Bakare. She restricted Sowore from speaking with journalists and travelling outside Abuja.
The judge ordered Sowore to produce two sureties in like sum, one who must deposit N50m to the court pending the determination of the case.
She said all sureties must be resident in Abuja, must show proof of tax clearance from 2016 to 2018 and must deposit original documents of landed properties in Abuja.
Earlier, while opposing the bail application, Hassan Liman, counsel to the federal government, urged the court to dismiss the request for bail, saying the defendants have demonstrated the likelihood of committing the same offences.
“The first defendant while being taken away from the court on Monday was seen chanting revolution, it is time for us to do it,” Liman said.
Juxtaposing Sowore’s case with that of the case of Asari Dokubo who was denied bail by the supreme court , Liman said offences threatening national security “such as this” should be handled with caution.
He also asked the court to take judicial notice of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the indigenous people of biafra (IPOB), who jumped bail.
Femi Falana, counsel to the defendants, prayed the court to allow bail on grounds that the defendants have never been found guilty of committing any offence before.
He said the use of the word “revolution” is not a criminal offense. Quoting the supreme court, he defined revolution as “the overthrow of one class by the other”.
Falana further pointed out that President Muhammadu Buhari also called for a revolution in 2003 and 2011 respectively after he lost the presidential election.
He argued that the first defendant(Sowore) has never called for a violent protest.
Addressing the second charge which bothered on insulting the president, the senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) said “under the current constitutional dispensation, no public officer in Nigeria is permitted to use the machinery of the state to settle scores with his opponent”
He said the constitution guarantees freedom of speech, which includes freedom to criticise and that government officials should be open to criticism.
Responding to the case of Dokubo raised by the opposition, Falana said Dokubo was not granted bail because he admitted to blowing pipes in the Niger Delta.
He assured the court that his clients would not cause any trouble if they are granted bail.
The case has been adjourned till November 6, 2019.

A 344-year-old tortoise popularly known as Alagba, in the palace of the Soun of Ogbomoso, died recently
The scared tortoise which was the oldest in Africa, was sick for a few days before her demise on Thursday.
The tortoise became a popular breed upon ascension of the throne of the current Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi with the monarch providing good shelter and health support for the tortoise during its sojourn on earth.
Confirming the incident by the Private Secretary to Oba Oyewumi, Toyin Ajamu, stressed that the tortoise, which attracted people from all walks of life from Nigeria and abroad, will be greatly missed not only by the palace household but everyone who came in contact with Alagba during her lifetime.
According to Ajamu: “Alagba had lived in the palace for centuries. The tortoise played host to many monarchs in Ogbomoso in the past.
Alagba became popular because Oba Oladunni Oyewumi, Soun of ogbomosoland, used his personal resources to cater for her well being.
“The tortoise had two staff members of the palace, dedicated to her. They provide food, health support and other logistics, so as to make sure she gets the best treatment. Often times, Kabiyesi shared great moments with Alagba. On a daily basis, Alagba, had tourists visiting her from different part of the world. The palace household, Ogbomoso community and stakeholders in the tourism sector are mourning Alagba’s passing. “
The palace secretary explained that plans were underway to preserve Alagba’s body for historical records.

Musilliu Akinsanya, MC Oluomo has been confirmed as the Lagos State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Works (NURTW). This is contained in a statement released by the Union.

The National President advised all Union members to cooperate with the state executive and also work in accordance with the NURTW constitution because it is the ground norm that guides the operations of the Union.

Ex-Under 23 Captain Isaac Promise dies of heart attack
Promise Isaac, who captained Nigeria to the 2008 Olympic silver medal and scored 79 goals in 11 professional seasons in Turkey, has died of suspected heart attack.
Isaac died late Wednesday after collapsing at his apartment gym in Austin, Texas, authorities said. He was 31.
The deceased was playing for the Austin Bold, an American professional soccer team in the USL Championship.
According to local report, police and Austin Bold owner, Bobby Epstein, said Isaac collapsed at his apartment gym and no foul play was suspected.
He played for Nigeria at the 2005 World Youth Championship and captained the Under-23 national team that lost the 2008 Olympic final 1-0 to Lionel Messi and Argentina. He also appeared in three matches for Nigeria’s senior national team.
Isaac played for seven clubs in Turkey, appearing in more than 350 matches. He spent a season in Saudi Arabia before signing with Austin Bold, where he had three goals in 20 matches this season.
