The 25th National Women’s Conference of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) came to a colourful and memorable close on Thursday night at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, with several lucky participants emerging winners of exciting star prizes, including a brand-new GAC pickup, a new home, and a ₦20 million cash reward, among other star prize winners. 

The high point of the glamorous Gala Night on Wednesday was the announcement of a ₦20 Million Prize award to Mrs. Florence Obayomi-Davies, a staff member of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), by the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.

Other star prize winners included Mrs. Olusola Oduguwa, a retired Permanent Secretary and pensioner, who became the proud owner of a new home, and Ms. Thelma Abidemi Madume, a staff of Coker Aguda LCDA, who went home with a brand-new GAC pickup truck.

Additionally, Mrs. Adekemi Folorunsho and Mrs. Ayisat Yebode each won return tickets to Ghana, while Mrs. Oluwatoyin Bolanle Falade , the wife of Mosan-Okunola Vice Chairman received a return ticket to London.

As the 25th Annual National Women’s Conference came to a grand close on Thursday, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu lauded the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) for its enduring legacy of empowering women, transforming families, and inspiring generations. 

Delivering his closing address at the conference, the Governor described the milestone as not just a celebration of a legacy but a renewal of a movement dedicated to uplifting women and strengthening society.

“Over the past few days, we have not only celebrated a legacy, we have renewed a movement,” Sanwo-Olu said. “We have reflected on 25 years of purpose, passion, and progress. Together, we have envisioned the next generation of women who will carry this legacy forward.”

The Governor paid glowing tribute to the rebirth of COWLSO under the visionary leadership of Senator Oluremi Tinubu, OON, CON, who revitalised the organisation during her tenure as First Lady of Lagos State, and commended the dynamic leadership of the current Chairperson, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, for sustaining the vision and expanding its impact across the state and nation.

“What began as a gathering of women with shared values has become a force that uplifts families, transforms communities, and shapes policy conversations across Nigeria,” he noted.

Sanwo-Olu urged women to take the spirit of COWLSO back to their communities by turning conference conversations into actionable impact, mentoring others, and leading with compassion and courage. “The next 25 years will depend on how boldly we continue to mentor, to serve, and to lead,” he added.

Governor Sanwo-Olu congratulated COWLSO on reaching its 25th anniversary, expressing optimism that its legacy of compassion, courage, and collaboration would continue to shine brightly for generations to come.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the First Lady of Lagos State and Chairman of COWLSO, Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu expressed profound joy and gratitude to God for the success of the Silver Jubilee edition of the conference, which had the theme: “25 Years of Visionary Legacy: Inspiring the Next Generation.”

She described the 25th anniversary edition as a true celebration of women’s strength, brilliance, and resilience, adding that the conference had provided participants with valuable insights and renewed purpose to drive change in their homes, workplaces, and communities.

“Our interactions over the past three days have once again shown that when women come together with passion and focus, the results are always inspiring,” Dr. Sanwo-Olu said. “The raffle draw winners remind us that every woman’s dream is valid and achievable.”

The First Lady commended all the distinguished guests who graced the conference, particularly the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, who joined virtually during the opening ceremony with a heartwarming goodwill message.

Dr. Sanwo-Olu further lauded the Conference Planning Committee led by Dr. (Mrs.) Olayemi Oke-Osanyitolu for their commitment and meticulous execution of the landmark edition. She extended appreciation to all COWLSO members, development partners, sponsors, and the media for their invaluable support.

Reaffirming COWLSO’s mission to continue inspiring and mentoring women, Dr. Sanwo-Olu charged participants to uphold the spirit of the Silver Jubilee by spreading the values of leadership, compassion, and service.

LASG Urges Community Media Practitioners To Uphold Ethics of the Profession

The Lagos State Government has Urged the Community Media Practitioners in Lagos to uphold the ethics, core principles of accuracy, balanced, and fairness in their reportage, while also maintaining strong connections with their audiences in their various communities.

This was stated yesterday  at the Year 2025 Community Media Interactive Session held at the T-Block Conference Room, Alausa Secretariat, the Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mr Kehinde Adebayo, said the state government recognises community media as a vital partner in advancing good governance and political education at the local level.

Adebayo described community media as “a powerful tool for empowering local communities, promoting participatory governance, and holding leaders accountable,” adding that its unique reach into remote and marginalised areas makes it indispensable for inclusive information dissemination.

As politics and governance continue to evolve, it has become clear that community media has also evolved to play a central role in educating and enlightening the people,” he said.

“If properly managed, it will become the most effective medium for civic engagement, voter education, and community development initiatives,” he added.

Acknowledging the challenges confronting community media practitioners, such as limited resources, censorship, and sustainability, but stressed that these obstacles present opportunities for innovation.

“By embracing new technologies and building strategic partnerships, community media can expand its reach and enhance its impact,” he noted.

On our part, we will continue to work hand-in-hand with community media practitioners to cascade credible information to the grassroots. We also urge you to give adequate coverage to the Ministry’s activities and ensure that our messages reach the people who need them most,” he said.

Reaffirming the Lagos State Government’s commitment to credible and transparent information flow, Adebayo assured participants that the Ministry would continue to collaborate closely with community media platforms to ensure that government policies, programmes, and initiatives are effectively communicated to residents at the grassroots.

“On our part, we will continue to work hand-in-hand with community media practitioners to cascade credible information to the grassroots. We also urge you to give adequate coverage to the Ministry’s activities and ensure that our messages reach the people who need them most,” he said.

Adebayo reaffirmed the government’s belief that community media remains essential to the state’s developmental agenda.

“Lagos State strongly believes that community media is a powerful instrument for grassroots enlightenment, good governance, and citizen participation. Together, we can build a more informed, engaged, and democratic society,” he asserted.

EDUCATION: LAGOS TARGETS OUT-OF-SCHOOL CHILDREN AS LASUBEB INTENSIFIES PROJECT ZERO CAMPAIGN

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that no child of school age in the State is denied access to free and quality basic education through the Project Zero Initiative, one of its flagship programmes designed to address and curb the growth of out-of-school children across Lagos.

The programme brought together key stakeholders including members of the School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs), Mothers’ Associations, Heads of Sections, and Project Zero Desk Officers, among others.

The Executive Chairman, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Dr. Hakeem Shittu, stated this at the Y2025 Project Zero Sensitization for Stakeholders on Implementation Strategies and Procedures held at the LASUBEB Multi-Purpose Hall on Tuesday, 28th October, 2025. He explained that the purpose of the programme is to curtail the increasing number of out-of-school children in the State, strengthen collaboration among stakeholders, and ensure sustained access to quality basic education for all.

Dr. Shittu added that Project Zero, launched in response to the learning disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, has successfully identified, enrolled, and reintegrated over 32,000 out-of-school children across Lagos State. He noted that the initiative also provides school uniforms, bags, sandals, and notebooks to support learning, while about 470 parents have been empowered through various vocational training programmes in partnership with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA).

He further emphasized that the Zero Tolerance to Out-of-School Children Initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) and the THEMES+ Agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, which prioritizes education and technology as key drivers for achieving a Greater Lagos.

The Project Zero Desk Officer, Miss Omobolanle Shobowale, presented the Project Implementation Strategies, outlining the processes of identifying, tracking, and monitoring children re-enrolled under the scheme. She urged members of the School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) to collaborate effectively with Headteachers and parents to ensure the  retention and completion of these children's education in their enrolled schools.

Sanwo-Olu Approves Recruitment of 1,400 Environmental Officers to Strengthen Lagos Sanitation Enforcement

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the recruitment of an additional 1,400 officers into the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC/KAI) as part of his administration’s renewed effort to strengthen environmental enforcement and sustain a cleaner, healthier city.

According to the state government, the new recruitment drive is aimed at supporting the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources in maintaining orderliness, ensuring public health, and promoting environmental sustainability across Lagos.

The new officers will help monitor compliance with environmental laws, curb indiscriminate dumping of refuse, discourage street trading in restricted areas, and enforce proper waste management practices in all parts of the state.

“This expansion will boost our capacity to ensure strict environmental compliance and maintain cleaner, healthier, and more orderly public spaces across Lagos,” the statement read.

Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating a Cleaner Lagos that prioritizes public health, safety, and environmental sustainability, noting that effective sanitation enforcement remains crucial to the state’s broader urban renewal and beautification agenda.

The new officers, once trained and deployed, are expected to work closely with existing sanitation teams and community stakeholders to sustain a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility in line with the state’s long-term Cleaner Lagos Initiative.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Damilola Ayinde-Marshal, Esq. has reiterated the Lagos State Government commitment in the preservation of the rich Lagos and African Culture and Heritage. 

This was stated yesterday  at the Grand Finale of  2025 EKO School Arts & Crafts Competition  at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa Ikeja, themed: "My Lagos, My Art".

 The event was an initiative of SSA, Damilola Ayinde-Marshal, Esq.,  It was an Arts & Crafts Competition for secondary and tertiary institutions in Lagos State, where various schools’ representatives across the Education Districts in the State were present.

At the Maiden edition, nine students emerged as winners and they received scholarship awards to further develop their artistic journey in life.

Israel Adedoyin, Government Junior Grammar School with creative work, "Lagos in motion" Oluwatobi Kolawole, Ikorodu Junior Grammar School, "Tie and Dye" and Desmond Awatefe, Tobvic College, "Waste to Wealth", were winners in Junior Category.

 Alexis Agheta, Square College, Lekki (Eyo l’Oba); Maryam Owolewa, Oriwu Senior Model School (Learning through visuals) and Usa Pascal, Birrel Avenue Senior High School, Yaba (Makoko community in Lagos) emerged winners for Secondary School Category. While Goodness Popoola, Lagos State University of Education, LASUED, with ‘Feminine figure depicting beauty); Azeez Aderibigbe, Lagos State University of Science and Technology, LASUSTECH (Two lovers depicting harmony) and Samuel Aina, Lagos State University of Education, LASUED have artwork (Aje: Wealth). Claimed the Tertiary category. 

In an opening remarks, Damilola Ayinde explained that the purpose of the competition was to shape the future of the creative economy and inspire others to embrace creative talents.

She said, “Today marks a milestone in our journey to celebrate, empower and showcase the next generation of Lagos creative champions. This initiative is not just a competition. It’s a movement of discovery, innovation and cultural preservation.

“When we flagged off this meeting a few weeks ago, our goal was clear. To identify young gifted individuals whose artistic expressions could tell the story of Lagos, shape the future of our creative economy and inspire others to embrace their talents.

“I am proud to say that the overwhelming response we received, 153 entries from students across secondary schools and tertiary institutions, has surpassed our expectations.

“Each entry represented not only creativity, but also courage, imagination, and the vibrant spirit of the Lagos youth.

“The Governor’s unwavering belief in the transformative power of arts and creativity continues to guide us all, continues to guide all the plans, programmes and policies of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.”

She added the Eko-Schools Arts and Crafts Competition was conceived as an annual platform to discover and nurture young talents in painting, drawing, sculpture and art.

“Beyond competition, it serves as an incubator for skill development and a bridge between classroom learning and real-world creative enterprise.”

Speaking at the event, The Chairman of the Lagos House Committee on Tourism, Arts and Culture,  Hon.  Saanu Bonu representing Badagry Constituency 1 commended the SSA for her passion, innovation in promoting Art and Culture in Lagos starting from secondary school level.

He vowed that  initiative was a well thoguth of and next edition would have a support of Lagos House of Assembly to futher porject the rich Lagos Art and Culture. 

On the part of the judges, Dr. Fola David, praised the participants for their ingenuity and professionalism.

“We considered not only the materials used: paper, wood, and renewable materials but also the stories behind each artwork. The creativity and innovation displayed were truly impressive. Presentation and packaging were also key factors in determining the winners,”he said.

At the end, presentation of scholarship cheques were presented to the winners.

I Regretted Moving To America — Media Personality Teju Baby Face Opens Up

Comedian and TV host Teju Oyelakin, popularly known as Teju Babyface, has shared his candid experience about relocating to the United States, describing it as a journey filled with unexpected challenges.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the comedian said many people mistakenly believe life automatically becomes easier when they move abroad. He explained that every environment comes with its own struggles, often unseen from afar.

“We all tend to s¥ffer from what I call the ‘grass is greener on the other side’ syndrome,” he said. “From where we stand, another place always looks better—greener, more promising. But we usually don’t see the challenges that come with it until we get there.”

Teju revealed that he initially regretted relocating, admitting that life in the U.S. was tougher than he anticipated, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I lived in that place for years,” he said describing the hardship of finding his feet.

“America has its own unique set of difficulties,” he said. “When you add COVID to that, it was brutal. For about three years, I was convinced I’d made the biggest mistake of my life—that I had sh+t myself in the foot.”

He concluded by saying “it is normal,” encouraging Nigerians considering relocation to weigh their decisions carefully and cultivate patience, noting that fulfillment often comes from adapting and growing where one is planted, rather than constantly chasing greener pastures.

Don’t interfere in your successors’ administration - Obasa warns ex-Lagos LG Chairmen

The Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has advised former local government chairmen in the state to steer clear of the administrations of their successors.

Obasa spoke at a meeting with the newly elected chairmen, according to a statement made available to DAILY POST on Wednesday.

The Lagos Speaker warned the immediate past chairmen of local governments and local council development areas in the state to release their stranglehold on their successors.

He said that the former council bosses have done their bit, hence they should allow their predecessors to do their own.

Obasa equally advised the former council bosses to allow the current ones to work without any obstacles.

He condemned the conduct of some former council bosses who are reportedly still exerting undue influence on their successors.

“How can you be answerable to your predecessors? What you owe them is honour, not to allow them to control you. They have done their bit, and everybody is grateful; you are the ones in the saddle now. So, take charge.

“Let the new chairmen breathe. Let the public see that there are new sheriffs in town and that they are doing a good job. Let their work show. Don’t take their shine. Remove your grip on their necks.

“Before you start paying loans, ask questions. Where you are unsure of what the loan was used for, ask questions and look through the books. If you can renegotiate or restructure the terms of the loans, do so for the betterment of your constituents,” Obasa said.

LASG gives 18-month deadline for Computer Village relocation

The Lagos State Government has said traders at the Computer Village in Ikeja have an 18-month window to relocate to the new site at Katangowa, Agbado/Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area.

A Tuesday statement noted that the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Gbolahan Oki, made this known while speaking at a stakeholders meeting held at the market with the traders and their executives.

“The government wants your cooperation to ensure the relocation comes to pass. The time is now. We have to make the project a reality. The relocation period is 18 months,” he said.

Oki said the state government had put necessary facilities in place at the new location to make the place conducive for the traders.

He noted that the present location in Ikeja was formerly a residential area, which, over the years, had been converted into a trading centre without the government’s approval.

Oki added that the plan to relocate the traders to Katangowa had been on since 2006, but due to the slow pace of the development work, the relocation suffered setbacks.

He told the traders that the stakeholders’ engagement was to carry them along on the government’s plan, adding that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu believes in inclusiveness and the welfare of the people.

He said, “The governor is passionate about the development of the infrastructure of Lagos State, and he wants all of you to be aware of the relocation. Katangowa is a place chosen for everything relating to this market. It’s 15 hectares of land. It is near all the materials you need for your business.

“The present location used to be a residential area and so many things are attached to this place. Where the government is taking you is well laid out and we want all of you to know what the relocation is all about. We want to work with you and plan the relocation together. Everyone wants change but there are things that will affect us if we are going to experience that change.”

The Project Coordinator, Olayinka Bello, said the new location had been designed to accommodate some infrastructures such as a police post, hotels, and accessibility to the BRT terminal for easy movement.

The Iyaloja, Computer Village, Chief Abisola Azeez, said the executive of the market, in 2006, reached an agreement with the then governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, now President, to relocate the market to Katangowa and urged the traders to abide by the government’s decision to relocate them within the period.

Speaking at the opening of the programme yesterday at Agege Stadium, the Acting Chairman Agege LG Alhaji Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa stated that, the Administration is centered on people's oriented policy and infrastructure that would bring food to the table of every residents of this community. "As economic hardship continues to strain households across Nigeria, this 50% Subsidy on Food Items are emerging as crucial lifelines for vulnerable populations. With more support from the government and private sector, such programs could play a pivotal role in mitigating food insecurity and ensuring that more Nigerians can afford basic necessities.

The Tinubu Media Force (TMF) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the historic revenue distribution milestone achieved through the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC). For August 2025, FAAC disbursed ₦2.225 trillion to the three tiers of government, marking the second consecutive month that allocations have surpassed ₦2 trillion. TMF described this as clear evidence of the President’s economic reforms, fiscal discipline, and bold measures to plug revenue leakages.

TMF, the largest progressive grassroots media structure with networks across 36 states, 109 senatorial districts, and 774 local governments nationwide, stressed that the record disbursement must translate into tangible benefits for ordinary Nigerians. The group emphasized that local governments, being the closest arm of government to the people, are uniquely positioned to channel these resources into projects that directly reduce the cost of living.

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Abiola Oluwagbenga, TMF urged local governments to invest in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) bus transportation models as a sustainable solution to rising transport costs. According to Oluwagbenga, CNG buses would provide affordable, reliable, and eco-friendly transport alternatives while aligning with the Federal Government’s energy transition agenda under the Renewed Hope vision.

On food security, TMF advised local councils to establish food hubs and storage facilities across the country’s 774 local government areas. The group noted that such infrastructure would reduce post-harvest losses, stabilize supply chains, and keep food prices affordable for families. “Food hubs and storage systems at the grassroots will enhance preservation, minimize waste, and guarantee fair returns for both farmers and traders,” the statement read.

The organization further called for the creation of logistics and distribution services that can supply food efficiently into local government markets. By putting structured systems in place, TMF argued, councils would gain a measure of regulatory oversight over food supply and pricing, ensuring consistent access to safe and affordable produce in every community.

TMF also stressed the importance of entrepreneurship funding and talent discovery for young people, urging local governments to establish programs that nurture innovation and creativity at the grassroots. By creating youth enterprise funds, training hubs, and skill incubation centers, councils can empower the next generation with opportunities for self-reliance, job creation, and sustainable livelihoods.

Concluding, TMF urged local governments to craft policies in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that the record FAAC allocation presents an unprecedented opportunity. “Investments in transport, food hubs, logistics, and youth enterprise will not only reduce costs for the average Nigerian but also lay the foundation for inclusive and sustainable development,” Oluwagbenga declared.

... As Commissioner Gifts Writing Materials, Skills Acquisition Gadgets to Pupils/Students 

Lagos State Basic and Secondary Schools kicked off the 2025/2026 academic session with impressive attendance.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun led the Management Staff of the Ministry to monitor compliance with the State's directive on resumption across the State on Monday, September 15, 2025.

The monitoring exercise carried out simultaneously across various schools also assessed the schools' readiness for the new academic session.

Speaking to the media after the tour, the Commissioner commended students' and parents' enthusiasm and readiness for the new session. The commendable turnout of both teachers and students, he noted, was an indication that they are in sync with the policies and programmes of the government in the education sector.

He advised students to be mentally prepared for learning, be obedient, complete assignments on time, and maintain regular attendance to fully engage in teaching-learning activities.

During his visit to Dolphin Senior and Junior High School and Saint Paul's Angelica Nursery and Primary School, both on Lagos Island, the Commissioner announced that the upcoming term would run for 13 weeks, from September 15 to December 12, 2025. He also mentioned that a Universal Timetable would be developed and distributed to all schools soon.

He reaffirmed the State's commitment to policies that boost teaching quality and students' performance in internal and external examinations and equally advised teachers to adapt to and cover the curriculum within the stipulated period.

Weighing in on the newly adopted Computer-Based Test (CBT) format for the West African Schools Certificate Examination, Alli-Balogun encouraged teachers to prioritise computer literacy for students, emphasising that proficiency in computer use is key to improving their speed and efficiency.

He urged teachers to be diligent, proactive and committed to their duties, saying, "Let's work together to make this academic session remarkable, filled with discovery, growth, and achievement. I wish you all a successful and fulfilling session!"

The Commissioner, who distributed writing materials to students and pupils in the schools visited, also gifted Dolphin Senior High School, Lagos Island, a standard oven/gas cooker and a sewing machine to support Home Economics and skills acquisition programmes.

Addressing teachers' challenges, he encouraged creativity and improvisation, adding that Principals should manage their school funds judiciously and complement the State Government's efforts where necessary.

The schools visited for compliance checks included Dolphin Senior and Junior High School, Saint Paul's Anglican Nursery and Primary School, Millennium Grammar School, and several others across various locations.

Lagos Assembly Roots for Financial Autonomy for Local Government Councillors in Lagos State

The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to mandate the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to design a clear framework that will grant financial independence to local government legislatures across the state.

At Tuesday’s plenary, presided over by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, lawmakers unanimously backed a motion sponsored by Ganiu Sanni (Kosofe 1), stressing that financial autonomy is crucial for strengthening grassroots democracy and effective governance.

Speaker Obasa expressed concern over reports that some former council chairmen still control council finances through Council Managers and Treasurers, remaining signatories to accounts even after leaving office. He insisted such practices undermine transparency and must be addressed immediately.

“The independence of the legislative arm at the council level is non-negotiable if we truly want grassroots democracy to thrive,” Obasa said, urging stakeholders to act decisively.

Sanni, who moved the motion, reminded the House that the 1999 Constitution recognises the local government legislature as a vital arm of governance, with core responsibilities in law-making, oversight, and representation. He, however, noted that dependence on the executive arm for funding weakens the separation of powers and exposes councillors to undue influence.

Other lawmakers, including Solomon Bonu (Badagry 1), Desmond Elliot (Surulere 1), and Nureni Akinsanya, threw their weight behind the motion. While Bonu praised President Bola Tinubu for his efforts at deepening grassroots democracy, Elliot argued that the Assembly’s reform agenda would be incomplete without granting autonomy to council legislatures. Akinsanya added that financial independence would enable councillors to carry out their duties responsibly and without interference.

Following the debate, the Assembly resolved to direct its Committee on Local Government Administration, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development to immediately begin drafting a self-accounting law to give legislative arms of the 20 LGs and 37 LCDAs in Lagos the financial autonomy they need.

NUPENG accuses Dangote of sponsoring division among tanker drivers

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers has accused the Dangote Petroleum Refinery of sponsoring division within its Petroleum Tanker Drivers branch, resisting workers’ rights to unionisation, and deploying what it described as “falsehoods” to undermine the union.

NUPENG also accused the company of using a “Greek gift” of free nationwide petroleum delivery to undermine the union and stifle competition.

In a statement signed by its National Executive President, Williams Akporeha, and the General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale, on Friday, the union dismissed a press release by the Dangote Group on Thursday as “an epitome of unconscionable capitalist falsehood aimed at hoodwinking Nigerians and crushing NUPENG.”

On Thursday, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery dismissed recent allegations made by the NUPENG that it banned tanker drivers from joining the union, insisting that claims of anti-labour practices, monopolistic behaviour, and planned fuel price hikes are “entirely unfounded”.

NUPENG, on Monday, shut down depots, protesting that the Dangote refinery did not allow the newly recruited drivers for its 4,000 compressed natural gas-powered trucks to join the union.

The shutdown of depots lasted till Tuesday, when it was suspended following an agreement reached by both parties at a meeting organised by the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

However, on Thursday, NUPENG said Dangote was not ready to abide by the terms of the agreement.

But in a statement made available to our correspondent by the spokesman for the Dangote Group, Anthony Chiejina, the company stated that the allegations that it was undermining union activities and threatening workers’ welfare through its new deployment of CNG-powered trucks were not true.

The Dangote refinery reiterated its full support for constitutionally protected labour rights, stating that employees are free to affiliate with any recognised trade union.

Reacting on Friday, NUPENG alleged that despite signing a Memorandum of Understanding on September 9, which it said acknowledged the company’s initial resistance to unionisation, the Dangote refinery on September 11, 2025, instructed drivers to remove NUPENG stickers from their trucks and replace them with those of the newly formed Direct Trucking Company Drivers Association, allegedly created by the management.

“Our members have stoutly resisted this development,” the statement said, adding that the refinery has been attempting to sponsor parallel structures within the PTD branch since 2023 by recruiting members who had lost union elections into the DTCDA.

NUPENG also linked some of the individuals supporting the company in the media to ongoing criminal cases.

The union further warned Nigerians against what it described as the “Greek gift” of free nationwide petroleum delivery by the Dangote refinery, alleging that the move was designed to stifle competition and force drivers into the company-controlled association.

“It is on record that Dangote Group does not allow unionisation in its cement and sugar plants across Nigeria”, NUPENG claimed, stressing that the same anti-union stance is now being extended to refinery workers.

The union called on Nigerians and the international community to resist any attempt to deny refinery workers and drivers their right to freedom of association and unionisation, warning that its leaders must not be harmed in the course of the struggle.

“Our solidarity remains constant, for the union makes us strong”, the statement concluded.

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to grassroots development with the official flag-off of the construction of a 200-metre stone-paved road on Sanni Street, Ifelodun Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Dr. Nurudeen Yekinni Agbaje, who performed the flag-off on behalf of the State Government, described the project as “more than a road construction – it is a new chapter in the story of development for the Ifelodun community.”

While giving his keynote address, Dr. Agbaje explained that Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has consistently prioritised inner roads that connect communities, reduce travel-time, and enhance the free flow of people and goods across Lagos. According to him, the project reflects the administration’s commitment to ensuring even development across all 57 Local Government Areas and LCDAs in the State.

“This road may appear modest in length, but its impact will be enormous. For the people of Sanni Street, it will ease daily stress, improve accessibility, and enlarge economic opportunities. This is why Mr. Governor has made rural infrastructure a cardinal focus,” the Special Adviser said.

He further assured that the 200-metre road, which is expected to be completed within six months, would not only bring immediate relief to residents but also stimulate business activities and enhance the overall environmental outlook of the area. He called on community members to take ownership of the project, protect contractors during the construction process, and provide the cooperation needed for smooth delivery.

Also speaking at the event, the Member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Ajeromi-Ifelodun Constituency 1, Honourable Lukman Olumo, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for cascading the dividends of democracy to the grassroots and thanked Dr. Agbaje for ensuring a prompt flag-off once approval was secured from the Governor.

Hon. Olumo gave strong assurances to his constituents, pledging that he would continue to push for projects that would aid the growth and development of Ajeromi-Ifelodun.

“Every genuine need of my constituency that advances our community will be taken to the State, and I will not rest until it is delivered,” he assured. 

In his technical presentation, representative of the construction company, JIBC Engineering Nigeria Limited, Engineer Seun Orekomaya, disclosed that the road project is designed as a stone-paved carriageway with covered drainage that doubles as pedestrian walkways, as well as solar-powered streetlights to enhance safety and security. He added that the company will deliberately partner with local artisans and skilled-workers in the area as a way of empowering residents economically during the construction period.

Beyond the flag-off, the event also featured an inspiring empowerment initiative. Cash grants were presented to youths in the community who had successfully completed a summer training programme facilitated by Hon. Lukman Olumo. The grants were personally handed over to the beneficiaries by Dr. Agbaje, who noted that youth empowerment remains an integral part of sustainable development.

He remarked that while infrastructure provides the physical framework for development, empowering young people provides the human capital required to sustain progress.

The event was well-attended by political leaders, community stakeholders, and residents who trooped out in large numbers to witness what many described as a long-awaited relief for Sanni Street.

Among the dignitaries present were the APC Chairman of Ifelodun LCDA, Honourable Babatunde Aderemi Olalekan; former Executive Secretary, Ifelodun LCDA, Honourable Adigun Wahab; and the CDC Chairman, Ifelodun LCDA, Alhaji Idowu Bolaji Jimoh, alongside many other notable leaders and stakeholders.

With the flag-off, the administration of Governor Sanwo-Olu has once again demonstrated its commitment to matching words with action, proving that development is not just a promise but a reality that residents can see, feel, and experience in their everyday lives.
