The Lagos State Government has announced the resumption guidelines for the Y2021/2022 academic session for public and private schools across the State.

In a release issued on Monday by the State Ministry of Education, the Honourable Commissioner, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, stated that all schools are expected to resume on Monday, 13th September 2021, while students of Model Colleges and Upgraded Schools will be required to resume in batches from Sunday 19th September, 2021.

In her words, “Boarders in Model Colleges and Upgraded Schools, as well as SS2 students seeking placement into SS3 class are expected to resume on Sunday 19th September, 2021. The revision for the classes will run from 20th to 26th September while promotion examination to SS3 class will start from 27th September to 8th October, 2021.

Mrs. Adefisayo further noted that the newly admitted JS1 students into Model Colleges and Upgraded Schools are to resume on Saturday, 2nd October, 2021 for a one-week orientation programme to intimate them on secondary school structure and modalities.

The Commissioner averred that other returning students in JS2, JS3, SS1 and the newly transited SS2 in the various Model Colleges and Upgraded Schools are to resume on Saturday, 9th October 2021, while classes for the students will commence on Monday, 11th October, 2021.

She also revealed that the adoption of staggered resumption for Model Colleges and Upgraded Schools was due to the presence of Y2020/2021 SS3 students currently writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) scheduled to end on the 6th of October, 2021, adding that another reason is that the schools cannot accommodate seven sets at once in the boarding system.

Adefisayo, therefore, appealed to parents to abide by the new development for a smooth academic session, just as she implored the students to be more diligent and devote more time to their studies.

Covid 19: Education District 1, Agege Produces Hand Sanitizers for Lagos Schools

...Urged Students on Regular Hand Washing

AgegePulse Magazine

The Lagos State Education District 1, comprising Agege, Alimosho and Ifako Ijaye Zones today produced Hand Sanitizers for Schools under the District.

Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of the District, Barrister Titilayo Margaret Solarin said that, it is imperative to champion a first of its kind programme to sensitize principals, teachers, students and other stakeholders on how to prevent this pandemic Corona Virus disease in our schools in Lagos.

The event which was held at the Government College School in Agege,  was aimed at teaching the students on regular handwashing to prevent all kinds of diseases.

Speaking Barr. Solarin said, “the need to increase public awareness amongst relevant stakeholders in order to curb the spread can't be overemphasized, especially among education stakeholders including teachers and students who cannot do without having contact with their colleagues on a daily basis”.

She further said that the gathering is not only for the sensitization but for the teachers and students to witness the production of hand sanitizers which would be very useful in keeping the disease at bay. “One of the methods being used by the state government is aggressive sensitization of all members of the public through different sectorial heads and opinion leaders in different fields of endeavors across the state”.

“This sensitization programme is considered necessary following the high rate of susceptibility of our children to this virus if they are not well briefed and sensitized on the Dos and Don'ts of the virus.

“Apart from this, we also rely on the stakeholders here as well as our students to help cascade our message of personal hygiene to their parents and neighbors in a bid to get everyone enlightened.

“As already being advised by medical experts, we are advised to note the following: avoid travelling to endemic areas, regular washing of hands with soap and water, avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands, avoid close contact with people that are sick.

“On our own part, this sensitization is a major step we are taking in addition to teaching of the production of sanitizers to curb the spread of the virus and also to teach hygiene among our students. Knowledge is power”. Barr. Solarin asserted.

On the part of the facilitator, Director, Lagos State Agriculture Development Authority, LASDA, Mrs. Juliana Balogun demonstrated and taught teachers and students on how to produce hand sanitizers with a token amount of money.

Balogun urged that it is important for people to imbibe the habit of regular washing of hands with soap and water and also go around with hand sanitizer where it's needed.

The high point of the event was when students of the District staged a drama play titled: “Covid-19, Corona Virus Must Go”, to educate fellow students on how to prevent the pandemic disease.

The teachers are really very set, we have seen some things are being put in place like the name of students per class, arrangements, distribution of time-table, even the first assessment (welcome test) of our students is ongoing. These are part of efforts that are stimulating the resumption generally because these children are always looking forward to the first day of resumption."

She said the state government has moved ahead to put necessary school needs in place to ensure smooth transition into the new session.

The award winning TGPS thanked the education stakeholders that made the resumption seamless.

"We want to use the opportunity to thank our parents for taking good and wonderful care of these students; they are looking very smart and happy to come back to school, we also thank the teaching and non-teaching staff, they already resumed since last week preparing the whole place for the students, ensuring the school environment is clean and conducive for learning, test running gadgets, preparing instructional materials just to ensure that our first day in school is not wasted. As you can see, it is not up to 10 O’clock, the schools have already settled. Our hearty appreciation goes to the present administration of Lagos State Government especially His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode who is making teachers happy and ready to do the work they know how to do best." It is our resolve to make learning interesting and appealing to every child - Tutor General/Perm.Sec. Education, District 1, Agege - Dr. Yinka Ayandele

Interview with Tutor General/Perm.Sec. Education, Lagos State Education District 1, Mrs. Ayandele A.Olayinka. PhD

" As the first Head Girl of Government College, Agege, I excessively focused and committed to leading by example. I strove hard to ensure my mates understand whatever we were taught. I organised tutorials and my mates benefited from it yet it never crossed my heart to become a teacher.

After graduation, I avoided teaching for over 12 years not knowing teaching was my calling - though, my mother was a retired teacher. My childhood dream was to become a chartered accountant and to work with NNPC.

However, every time I had anything to do with explaining a concept to people, I do it with passion and I get excellent remarks from them. And I've since, developed unflinching passion for teaching. Since I resumed as TUTOR GENERAL, we have designed a functional and result oriented process that have yielded remarkable results both in and outside the classrooms. Education District 1 has moved from 21% in our 2015 performance score card to 71.4% in 2016.

It is our resolve to make learning interesting and appealing to every child under our jurisdiction and my greatest joy has been seeing parents withdrawing their children from private schools and enroll them into public.

With the clear interest of Gov. Ambode in education, the learning outcomes of Lagos State will remain a model for all".
