LAWMA to ban single use plastic | AgegePulse Magazine

By Ayodele Ifasakin

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is set to ban single use plastic materials across its formations, as part of its efforts to curtail the environmental menace posed by the item.

AgegePulse learnt that,  this was made known by the Authority, in a press release on Monday, noting  that the agency was taking the step, as a key implementer of the Lagos State Plastic Policy, geared towards making the environment livable and free from plastic pollution.

“LAWMA, as an environment-friendly organisation, is totally committed to promoting the ban of single use plastic, across our work formations in the state. We are glad to lead by example, looking forward to other corporate bodies doing same, to make the environment cleaner and safe from plastic pollution”, the statement read.

The Authority called on residents to shun the act of indiscriminate dumping of waste at unauthorised locations, such as canals, gutters, road medians and uncompleted buildings, pointing out that such abhorrent practice worsened the challenge of flooding in the state, as the rainy season resumed.

It urged residents to call LAWMA toll-free numbers: 07080601020 and 617 (for GLO users), to report environmental infractions and make inquiries on waste management related issues in their area.

Lagos NAWOJ, Code for Africa, Sign MoU To Train Female Journalists | AgegePulse Magazine

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Lagos State chapter has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Africa's biggest Data journalism and civic technology platform, Code For Africa (CfA), to train women journalists on data literacy and development.

A statement signed by Lagos NAWOJ  Chairperson, Adeola Ekine, said the CfA is a non-partisan ‘change agent’ that offers engineering and editorial support, skills development, seed-funding, and business development services to strengthen digital democracy.

Also,  it equips citizens with  information by amplifying their voices through civic engagement for improved public governance and accountability.

The organisation operates through a network of chapters and other affiliate organisations across the continent, to carry out the training through its women's data science and journalists platform, Wanadata, WD.

It nurtures professional growth and accelerates the influence of female data experts through a peer support network as a way to use evidence-driven discourse to reframe gender perspectives on public decision-making and policy creation on development issues.

Speaking shortly after signing the MoU, the Chairperson, Lagos NAWOJ, Adeola Ekine, expressed her excitement about the partnership with Code for Africa saying this is an avenue to train her members through its 'Wanadata' programme.

According to her, "It is coming when our members need new skills to add to what they already have to match up with their international counterparts especially as the COVID-19 Pandemic has made us all adjust to the new normal in our reportage," she said.

She added that, "Part of our campaign promises was training, capacity building, and empowerment of Lagos NAWOJ members, and we have achieved this through the Wanadata Platform  to mark the second anniversary of the present NAWOJ Lagos executive in May".

Ekine encouraged selected members to take advantage of this rare opportunity to develop their data and digital knowledge in journalism to be able to match their foreign counterparts in these areas.

While CfA adheres strictly to the Covid -19 Pandemic safety protocols, the virtual training aims at buildimg the capacity of NAWOJ members on data and digital technologies for media and journalism.

Select members are advised to commit two hours of their time to the online training to get the maximum benefits.

Also speaking, the Chief Data Officer for Code for Africa Jacopo Ottaviani said the team was thrilled to partner with NAWOJ in a joint effort to build capacities and share knowledge around data-driven journalism in Nigeria.

The Data Officer said, “The entire team believes in the power of quality, fact-based journalism in shaping a healthy public debate around the key challenges of our times, and a correct, insightful use of data can help achieve this objective,” he said.

The partnership will run till 2022 and members will be trained in batches every quarter. The first  is a three-day certificate-based training which commences on the 24th till 26th of May, 2021.

Ramadan Package: Why We gave Out Food packages To Agege LG Residents, Says Sola Osolana | AgegePulse Magazine

The recently  suspended Agege LG Supervisor Work and Infrastructure, Hon. Sola Osolana has revealed the rationale behind the gesture of his foundation which distributed over 500 Food Packages to Agege residents recently.

Sola Osolana Foundation food package

Osolana who is the Chairman of an NGO, Sola Osolana Foundation stated in a media chat with AgegePulse Magazine and Other Media houses revealing why he has decided to give back to the community that made him.

According to him, each food package comprises of Rice, Semovita, Garri, Milo,  Milk etc.

Beneficiary

"Through Sola Osolana Foundation, and as the slogan implies, "Impacting Lives", we have resolved  to come up with ideas and programmes that will bridge the nutritional food deficit in  our dear community".

"We will soon organise other intervention programmes on Education, Health, Youth Empowerment, Capacity Building and Financial Freedom for our youths to complement the effort of the government".

As for Ramadan, Prophet Mohammed (SAW) says, Allah Gives this reward even to those who give a sip of milk to a fasting man." This signifies the virtue of charity with all its types and forms.

Those who give charity in Ramadan and increase their charities therein have followed the example of the Prophet  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) and realized the virtue.

"Ramadan period is a season to give and share. So it's an opportunity for the foundation to give out food packages  during this period to our Muslims faithful as part of our social care and responsibility".

This is where we drew our inspiration as Ramadan teaches charity and love", Osolana concluded.

Recall, in early 2021, Sola Osolana Foundation was the major sponsor of Elephant Club of Ogba as the club unveiled the newly renovated 6-blocks of classrooms and donation of over 100 furniture to Akilo Primary School in Agege.

#Flooding: Take Ownership of Pen Cinema Flyover, LASG Charges Agege Community | AgegePulse Magazine

As part of efforts to address flash flooding around the newly constructed Agege Pen Cinema Flyover Bridge and other parts of the State, the Lagos State Government has called on residents of Agege community to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels.

Agege Pen Cinema Bridge

Speaking against the backdrop of the recent flash floods experienced at Oke-Koto and environs after a heavy downpour, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Works and Infrastructure, Mrs. Aramide Adeyoye noted that the flooding was caused by clogging in the main collector drain conduits along Capitol Road.

Noting that the Agege Pen Cinema Flyover Bridge was designed to eliminate the perennial traffic gridlocks across the intersections at Agege, Adeyoye said the adjoining roads were also constructed by the State Government with an adequate drainage system to mitigate the recurrence of flooding associated with the corridor.

She added that the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels by the residents of Agege community was solely responsible for the severe clogging and siltation of the drains, thereby resulting in the flooding as experienced recently at Oke-Koto.

The Special Adviser warned residents to desist from the act of dumping refuse into the drains, stating that the Emergency Flood Abatement Gangs (EFAG) of the Ministry of The Environment and Water Resources have embarked on desilting of the drains to allow free flow of run-off/stormwater and prevent flooding on the carriageway.

Adeyoye said: “At the moment the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration is making efforts to reduce the number of bad roads in the State. A drive through the streets and highways of Lagos will reveal that roads had either been repaired or are being fixed across many locations as Government is making frantic efforts to provide infrastructural facilities that will ameliorate the suffering of the citizenry”.

“Any road is as good as its drains, once we clog the drains with refuse, we compromise the integrity of the pavement and overall riding surface. Therefore, as we continue to prepare for the rains, people must stop the various abuses on road transport infrastructure challenges associated with the rainy season”, she added.

Speaking further, the Special Adviser emphasised the need to ensure the sustainability of road assets and optimise the level-of-service outcome in return for the most cost-effective financial input, calling on community leaders to be actively involved in guiding against vandalism of public infrastructure.

“The State Government holds as premium the responsibility of strategic provision of road infrastructure across the State. Sustainability also requires we engage with the citizenry to register in their subconsciousness and seek their support in terms of taking ownership of the roads and to guide jealously these collective assets against misuse and abuse”, Adeyoye stated.

America Decides: Why Joe Biden Will Win US Election By Jumu’ah Abiodun | AgegePulse Magazine

As the whole world is looking forward to the much-awaited United States election slated for Tuesday, November 3, 2020, there are lots of political intrigues to the poll. This is the 59th quadrennial presidential election of the country.

Major issues that shape the election include Climate Change, COVID-19 pandemic, the death of George Floyd which gave birth to the Black Lives Matter protests across the world and the death of other African-Americans, pushing for the repeal of Obama Care, Economy, Faceoff with China among other issues.

COVID-19:

Presently in the United States, over 9 million cases were confirmed and 231, 000 deaths recorded. It was reported that President Trump ignored experts advice and undermined the pandemic.

George Floyd's Death:

The Majority of Americans ranging from whites and black believe the President didn't handle the killings of Black Americans with care.

Obama Care:

President Trump got it wrong when he started pushing for the repeal of Obama Care which millions of Americans are benefiting from.

Climate Change:

President Trump doesn't seem to show enough concern about Climate Change.

It's worth noting that the US election is not about the total number of votes cast or states won but satisfying the 270 or above Electoral College votes needed to win the White House.

If no candidate receives the minimum 270 electoral votes needed to win the election, the United States House of Representatives will select the president from the three candidates who received the most electoral votes, and the United States Senate will select the vice president from the candidates who received the two highest totals. The election will occur simultaneously alongside elections for the House of Representatives, Senate, and various state and local-level elections.

In 2016, President Trump won the Electoral College with 304 votes compared to 227 votes for former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. Though, Clinton won by 65,853,625 (48.0%) to Trump’s 62,985,106 (45.9%) of popular votes.

With my holistic view of how the campaigns across the country have taken shape, you would agree with me that typical Americans prefer Republican candidate, President Donald Trump while the Latino, African-American, Indian-American, and the Asian-American voters queue behind the former Vice President and Democratic candidate, Joe Biden.

While doing my state by state analysis that might give Joe Biden the victory prompted my explanation in assessing the states in alphabetical order.

The Republican party is expected to win in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi,  Missouri, Montana  Nebraska, (Statewide), North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wyoming

The Democratic party is expected to win convincingly in  Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin.

California is the home state of Democratic Vice Presidential candidate, Kamala Harris. So, Democrats are expected to win with about 60-65% while Republican struggle with 30-32% votes.

Delaware, the home state of Democratic Presidential candidate, Joe Biden. The democratic party is expected to garner about 55-60% while Republican struggle 35-40% votes

Florida is the home state of President Trump, the state and Iowa are expected to be a tight race for both major political parties. Democratic  Party also is expected to win with a slim margin of 2-5% above Republican in Michigan.

In Indiana, the Republican Vice-President candidate, Mike Pence state, his party is expected to win with about 55-60% to Democratic 30-35% votes.

In Minnesota, the election in the state will be determined by the aftermath of George Floyd’s death which gave birth to the Black Lives Matter movement, Democratic party expected to garner 46-52% votes.

For record purposes no Republican has won the White House in nearly a century without winning Florida, and for Trump to win he needs the Sunshine State and its 29 electoral votes too.

In light of my above analysis, President Joe Biden is expected to win the Tuesday election convincingly.

If Biden wins the election, his victory then becomes historical. He would become the oldest person to serve as president of the United States at 78-year-old on the day of his inauguration and the first candidate to defeat an incumbent president in 28 years since Democrat Bill Clinton defeated Republican George Walker Bush in 1992.

His running mate, Kamala Harris would also become the first woman to serve as vice-president of the United States.

It's worthy of noting that this is the first election in the history of the United States in which both major parties candidates are over 70 years of age.

Obasa reiterates commitment to develop Agege, says: See Agege, See Paris

No doubt, the speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa is passionate about seeing a drastic and effective development of his constituency and the entire Agege community as a whole.
Obasa returned to Orile Agege on Wednesday 21st September, 2016, as a guest representing the Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode at the commissioning of Ogundele Street. The speaker was treated to a rousing accolade by dignitaries' most especially female politicians and the market women at the event.
The number 3 man in Lagos commended the commitment of the members of the All Progressives Congress in the area. He noted that the commissioned road is one of the many rewards the community would benefit from their investment in voting APC candidates into elective offices during elections.
“It is heartwarming that Agege is now ranking among top cities in Lagos and Nigeria at large with the rate of developments going on in the community. We promise that we will commission more roads in Agege very soon which will bring total transformation to the area.
By the time the Abule Egba and Pen Cinemas bridges are completed, you will see wonder in Agege LGA and Orile Agege LCDA. Then everyone can boldly say “See Agege, See Paris”.
Obasa went on to deliver  Gov. Ambode's speech and afterwards cut the ribbon to officially open the Ogundele Street for use. He proceeded to Fashola street
