Lagos State Polytechnic was cynosure of all eyes yesterday when a drone created by students of the institution was flown high across the roof of the Agege Stadium during exhibition of various activities by Lagos State MDAs.

The exhibition was part of events lined up by the state government to celebrate Lagos @50.

The hovering of the drone was a beautiful sight to behold for all the Lagos State civil servants, politicians and other dignitaries in the stadium. Many said the technological product is a reassurance of the technical endowment of Lagos State.

His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode ably represented by Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Adebule was full of praise for the workers saying they (workers) have contributed immensely to the success story of the state. He however urged them not to relent on their laurels.

Also, Education District 1, Agege led by TGPS Dr. Ayandele led dignitaries at the exhibition to showcase several works of arts and crafts as well as trophies won by District 1 at various competitions they partook. The district had 2016 One Day Governor, Master Olaseinde among the team who paraded at the exhibition.

Other ministries, agencies and parastatals of the state took turn to parade round the stadium amidst singing, dancing and beautiful displays.

The people of Ishawo Community in Ikorodu will no longer sleep in apathy and anxiety over the nefarious activities of hoodlums who have turned the area into den as security operatives from the Lagos State Police Command deployed to the riverine area Wednesday commenced total demolition of illegal waterfront shanties within the creeks.

The State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni who briefed journalists in Ishawo on the ongoing operations in the creeks by a combined team of the State Marine Police, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), mobile policemen and the men from the anti-kidnapping squad in coordination with the local vigilante group, said 13 suspected kidnappers have already been arrested and are currently aiding the team to track down the remaining suspects still on the run.

It would be recalled that two weeks ago, four Police Officers and one Army Captain lost their lives after an ambush unleashed on them by suspected militants in Ishawo area.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, while condoling with the families and loved ones of the departed officers, had assured that every perpetrator directly or remotely linked to the dastardly act would be brought to justice in the shortest possible time.

Owoseni said that the Governor immediately ordered a joint operation to hunt down the perpetrators, adding that the operation was yielding positive results.

“So far so good following the attack that occurred at Ishawo where we lost four of our policemen and army captain, we have deployed operatives in the water. What you have seen now is for us to appraise what we have been doing for the past one week. So, quality arrests have been made and we are talking to them because the arrests that were made we believe that we get some evidential value from them, so they are talking to us, at least that makes us to know who we are looking for so that we won’t be just wild catching,” Owoseni.

Owoseni said that one of the suspected militants died during a fierce encounter with the Intelligence Response team of the Inspector General of Police, assuring residents in the area that they would go all out to ensure that they fish out all criminal elements in the State.

He commended the synergy of the combined efforts of the security operatives, just as he added that the efforts of the local vigilante groups who are familiar with the terrain was critical to the operation especially in aiding to navigate the hideouts of the militants.

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare has said that the ongoing reform in solid waste management, tagged: “The Cleaner Lagos” initiative,will contribute to the improvement of the socio-economic conditions of the residents of Lagos State by tackling the problems of poverty and unemployment.

Adejare, who on Monday at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, during the 2017 Annual Ministerial Press Briefing in commemoration of the second year in office of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, stated that the Solid Waste Management (SWM) sector had been identified as critical to the realization of the vision of the current administration to position Lagos as a clean, healthy and livable State.

He stated that the sector, therefore, required urgent attention to bring it to the required level of international standard as its current situation, which had necessitated the reform of the entire solid waste management sector, clearly did not align with the Lagos State Government’s future vision.

“Current realities in this sector reveal deficiencies across the entire process chain, from insufficient collection services to inadequate transportation methods and abysmal disposal practices that are not only wasteful in terms of resource utilization but also injurious to environmental and public health”, he said.

The Commissioner recalled that Lagos State, in its 50years of existence, had grown exponentially in population thereby impacting on solid waste management and sanitation as a whole, adding that at present the daily waste generation in the State officially stood at 13,000 metric tonnes.

According to Adejare, by devolving the provision of Solid Waste Management services to the private sector, the CLI will birth a new financially viable and technology-driven sub-sector to the Lagos economy, creating new businesses and job opportunities that can be emulated by other Stateswithin the country.

His words: “These reforms are all encapsulated under the ‘Cleaner Lagos Initiative’ (CLI) with a broad strategy of creating an environment for the private sector to harness international best practice in this vital area of infrastructure.

“The CLI aims to protect the environment, human health and social living standards of Lagos residents by addressing the lacunae in the existing legislation and refocusing the scope of LAWMA to enable the agency enforce, regulate and generate revenue from the waste management process”.

“The components of the Cleaner Lagos Initiative include Residential Waste Collection and Processing, Commercial & Industrial Waste Collection, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Drainage Maintenance, Provision of Engineered Sanitary Landfill , Manual Street Sweeping, Mechanised Street Sweeping, Provision of Transfer Loading Stations(TLS), Material Recovery Facilities(MRF) and Marine Waste Collection”, he added.

The Commissioner maintained that under the CLI, waste generated by the commercial sector would be handled by licensed waste management operators while an environmental consortium would provide waste collection processing and disposal services for residential properties.

Speaking on the de-flooding activities of the State Government, the Environment Commissioner noted that over 10.8million people have benefited from the de-flooding programme through completion of 21 drainage construction and 14 drainage dredging projects across the State.

He stated that to achieve this feat, the Lagos State Government constructed 12.99 km length of drainage channels in 17 LGAs/LCDAs, dredged 22.250 km length of primary channel across the State and made provision for 16 new drainage projects.

There are usually many questions that come to mind when planning how to exercise during pregnancy. Likewise, in those days when our great grandma, grandma and mummies were still in the business of giving birth, there is this perception about pregnant woman: they should not participate in any physical activities as it is dangerous for both the baby and the mother. During this time in marriage the man takes over the woman responsibilities, trust our women they always make good use of this opportunity. In fact, it is believed that any man who refuses to turn to a woman during this period of nine months is not a real man. Is exercise during pregnancy safe? Yes, depending on the situation at hand. If you were physically active before you got pregnant, it is likely safe to remain active during pregnancy.

Although, stress during pregnancy is very dangerous for both the mother and the baby. It is important to know that pregnancy time is not the time to exercise for weight loss, however, proper exercise during pregnancy will likely help with weight loss after the delivery of your baby. Can exercising during pregnancy lead to miscarriage? Yes it can, if it is not properly done and as well it depends on whether the pregnancy is normal or not. This is because during pregnancy, all the body’s physiological parameters changes.

What do I stand to gain if I exercise with my pregnancy? You may ask.  It has been clearly proven that physical exercise is bodily activity that improves or maintains physical fitness and overall health and wellness. This type of exercise during pregnancy is important and can help with some common discomforts of pregnancy and even help prepare your body for labor and delivery which will make it easier for you to get back in shape after your baby is born. Other benefits include reduction of backaches, constipation, bloating, and swelling, help to  prevent, or treat, gestational diabetes, increases your energy, Improves your mood, improves your posture, promotes muscle tone, strength, and endurance, helps you sleep better. How often do you exercise during pregnancy? Duration of Exercise for 30 minutes on most days or everyday can benefit your health during pregnancy. Exercising for just 20 minutes, 3 or 4 days a week, is still beneficial as well.

The important thing is to be active and get  your blood flowing. To have success in completing exercises during pregnancy, it is a good idea to plan the days and times during the week when you will exercise. If you participated in a regular exercise activity prior to becoming pregnant, it is probably fine to continue to participate during your pregnancy. There are many exercises that are safe to do during your pregnancy but it is important not to overdo it and to use caution.


Your baby is surrounded by fluid in the amniotic sac, which is nestled inside the uterus, which is surrounded by the organs, muscles and your physical body. This actually creates a rather safe environment for your developing baby. However, even with this protection, it is recommended you avoid high-impact exercise.There are some exercises that you have to avoid during pregnancy, exercises that may cause any abdominal trauma, including activities with jarring motions, contact sports or rapid changes in direction. Activities that require extensive jumping, hopping, skipping, or bouncing, bouncing while stretching, waist twisting movements while standing, intense bursts of exercise followed by long periods of no activity, exercise in hot  humid weather. It is important not to hold your breath for an extended period of time and not to exercise to the point of exhaustion.

All of these factors may affect how you exercise and what exercises you choose to do.  Remember, it is always recommended you consult your healthcare provider about exercises for your specific situation.

Lagos Education District 1 Agege Celebrates Lagos @50 in Grand Style

The three-day event organised by Lagos Education District 1 Agege to commemorate the Golden Jubilee celebration of the state has ended.

The event tagged 'Celebrating Lagos @50 - Science, Arts and Crafts Exhibition', was the brain child of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode as part of the 50 activities lined up for the celebration.

Science and technology research works were exhibited on the first day. The second day witnessed the display of creative arts and crafts while the third day was dedicated to talent discoveries among students of the districts.

 

Although, the exhibition took place across the six education districts of the state simultaneously, Education District 1 Agege - known for excellence, staged a glamorous, educative, fanfare, dramatic, exciting and fun-filled event that showcased the true MegaCity status of Lagos state.

Speaking at the grand finale of the exhibition, the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary Education District 1, Dr Yinka Ayandele lauds the leadership of Lagos from onset till date saying their foresight gave Lagos a perfect structure.

"Lagos is our pride. Lagos is a place to be. We are very proud of our founding fathers and the incumbent leadership. They have all contributed immensely to make Lagos what it is today with a perfect social, political, and economical structure that could compete favourably with other climes", Dr Ayandele asserted.

 "It is a privilege that we have an education loving Governor in person of His Excellency, Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode who gave us the impetus to showcase our children as part of the Lagos Golden History celebration.

"We appreciate the presence of the Deputy Governor, Dr. Oluranti Adebule who declared open - the exhibition of various research works of students of Education District 1 in the area of Science, Technology, Arts and Craft".

She promised that the exhibition of the children's creative efforts in the area of arts, crafts, music, dance and drama will not end with the Lagos @50 celebration. She said the district will work towards making the programme an annual event.

"We wish to take this event beyond the Lagos @50 celebration. We believe such move will endear us to discover the talents deposited in them by God and avail them entrepreneurial skills to leverage on while schooling", said Dr. Ayandele.

Also, as a show of appreciation to Governor Ambode, the  drama group of Agege Local Government Education Authority under the leadership of Hon. Olamilekan Majiyagbe presented an interesting drama titled 'Ambodemocracy'. The drama was used to depict democratic style of the number one citizen of Lagos.

 Motorists, hawkers arrested for illegal street trading

In a determined effort to stop the menace of street trading, Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps Agency, LASECORPS, have arrested six motorists, four passengers and nine hawkers during a recent operation carried out on Agege Motor Road for patronizing highway hawkers while their vehicles were also impounded.

Speaking on the operation, the Corps Marshal, CSP Jimoh Amusat Bola (rtd) said LASECORPS would henceforth arrest buyers, sellers and motorists for illegal street trading, adding that the Agency was poised to stop ‘illegal street trading’ in the State.

He disclosed that the arrested offenders were subsequently arraigned at the Samuel Ilori Court in Ogba, listing the impounded vehicles as Honda Accent marked MUS-479DE, Hiace – LSR – 272XP, Toyota Hilux – KRD - 389XE; Sienna – JJJ745DQ; taxi cab – GGE 149XG and a commercial bus- LSD – 348EH.

In a judgement delivered by Magistrate Olayiwola Ogundare, the hawkers and their customers were sentenced to three months jail with an option of N10,000 fine with each of the motorists paying additional N20,000 to the State.

The state government had embarked on continuous sensitization of citizens on the dangers inherent in illegal hawking and street-trading, as well as a violation of the environmental laws of the State.

INTRODUCTION
Meningitis is an inflammation (swelling) of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord known as the meninges. This inflammation is usually caused by an infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

CAUSES
Meningitis is usually caused by bacteria or viruses, but can be a result of injury, cancer, or certain drugs.

Bacterial meningitis
Bacteria that enter the bloodstream and travel to the brain and spinal cord cause acute bacterial meningitis. But it can also occur when bacteria directly invade the meninges. This may be caused by an ear or sinus infection, a skull fracture, or, rarely, after some surgeries.
Viral meningitis

Viral meningitis is usually mild and often clears on its own. Most cases in the United States are caused by a group of viruses known as enteroviruses, which are most common in late summer and early fall. Viruses such as herpes simplex virus, HIV, mumps, West Nile virus and others also can cause viral meningitis.

Fungal meningitis
Fungal meningitis is relatively uncommon and causes chronic meningitis. It may mimic acute bacterial meningitis. Fungal meningitis isn't contagious from person to person. Cryptococcal meningitis is a common fungal form of the disease that affects people with immune deficiencies, such as AIDS.

Chronic meningitis
Slow-growing organisms (such as fungi and Mycobacterium tuberculosis) that invade the membranes and fluid surrounding your brain cause chronic meningitis. Chronic meningitis develops over two weeks or more. The symptoms of chronic meningitis — headaches, fever, vomiting and mental cloudiness — are similar to those of acute meningitis.



Other meningitis causes
Meningitis can also result from noninfectious causes, such as chemical reactions, drug allergies, some types of cancer and inflammatory diseases such as sarcoidosis.

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS
1. Sudden high fever
2. Stiff neck
3. Severe headache that seems different than normal
4. Headache with nausea or vomiting
5. Confusion or difficulty concentrating
6. Seizures
7. Sleepiness or difficulty waking
8. Sensitivity to light
9. No appetite or thirst

RISK FACTORS
Risk factors for meningitis include:
1.Skipping vaccinations. Risk rises for anyone who hasn't completed the recommended childhood or adult vaccination schedule.
2. Age. Most cases of viral meningitis occur in children younger than age 5. Bacterial meningitis is common in those under age 20.
3. Living in a community setting. College students living in dormitories, personnel on military bases, and children in boarding schools and child care facilities are at greater risk of meningococcal meningitis. This is probably because the bacterium is spread by the respiratory route, and spreads quickly through large groups.
4. Pregnancy. Pregnancy increases the risk of listeriosis — an infection caused by listeria bacteria, which also may cause meningitis. Listeriosis increases the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth and premature delivery.
5. Compromised immune system. AIDS, alcoholism, diabetes, use of immunosuppressant drugs and other factors that affect your immune system also make you more susceptible to meningitis. Having your spleen removed also increases your risk, and patients without a spleen should get vaccinated to minimize that risk.

Before the stroke. Many tragic incidences do happen even though nobody prays for it. Yes that is true, but not all are without prior warning. The unfortunate thing is that people tend to ignore it instead of taking necessary steps to avoid it from happening.  National Stroke Association gives explication on stroke as a "brain attack" which could happen to anyone at any time and occurs when blood flow to an area of the brain is cut off. When this happens, brain cells are deprived of oxygen and begin to die. When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the brain such as memory and muscle control are lost.

They further explain that how a person is affected by their stroke depends on where the stroke occurs in the brain and how much the brain is damaged. For example, someone who had a small stroke may only have minor problems such as temporary weakness of an arm or leg. People who have larger strokes may be permanently paralyzed on one side of their body or lose their ability to speak. Some people recover completely from strokes, but more than 2/3 of survivors will have some type of disability.

It will interest you to know that blood supply to a particular area in the body cannot just completely be cut-off except in the case of accident. It is a gradual process. When a blockage is building up in the wall of the blood vessel that supplies the brain, the body tends to give some warning which could come inform of sudden-onset of face weakness, arm drift (i.e., if a person, when asked to raise both arms, involuntarily lets one arm drift downward) and abnormal speech together with twitching of mouth to one side. It has been recorded that 87% of stroke seen today is as a result of blockage of blood from reaching the brain.


Also, blood flow to a part of the brain can stop for a short period of time, this case is called transient ischemic attack (TIA), it can mimic stroke-like symptoms. These symptoms appear and last less than 24 hours before disappearing. While TIAs generally do not cause permanent brain damage, they are a serious warning sign that a stroke may happen in the future and should not be ignored.

I have met with many stroke patients and 90% of them told me they had in one time experienced those warning but they never took it serious. What can I do if I noticed this symptoms? It is simple all you need to do is to visit any standard hospital around you for a checkup. Never ignore any of this signs as they come before stroke.

I will like to end this week article by borrowing a quote from an American speaker. It goes thus: “The Bible give us a list of human stories on both sides of the ledger. On list of human stories is used examples -- do what these people did. Another list of human stories is used as warnings -- don't do what these people did. So if your story ever gets in one of these books, make sure they use it as an example, not a warning.”

Rt. Hon. Obasa stated this in his message to celebrate the 65th birthday anniversary of the former Governor. The statement was signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Musbau Razak.


Describing Tinubu as the architect of modern Lagos, Obasa stated that the ingenuity of the former Governor has turned the state once regarded as the dirtiest in the country to not only the cleanest but that has also achieved a mega city status.

"He's not only the architect of modern Lagos, he's also a great leader of men whose unrivalled ability to discover talent has led to the discovery of great leaders who have turned out to become reference point in great leadership and good governance in the present democratic dispensation in the country," the Lagos Assembly Speaker said.

Obasa stated further that Asiwaju Tinubu will continue to remain relevant and the main reference point in Nigerian politics forever because of his selfless and humane nature which centre on the development of man in particular and the nation in general.

"His love for the common man knows no bound and his passion for the development and growth of this great country makes him arguably Nigeria's greatest politician of the present political dispensation," he said.

He concluded saying, "on behalf of other members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, I greet our leader and wish him more years of celebration in good health and wisdom".

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has said that his administration would require about N60billion to give public schools in the State a befitting facelift as well as set up new schools especially in the riverine areas.

The Governor, who said this during an interview with journalists, said though his administration has spent about N10billion in the last 22 months to boost the quality of education in the State, there was still a lot to be done in the sector.

He said the State Government had carried out a study last year on the interventions needed in public schools and the construction of new ones, assuring that the funds set aside in the 2017 budget for education would be judiciously put to good use.

“The result showed that we need about N60billion to put our schools together. But we have started the massive rehabilitation of our schools last year and you can go round to confirm. We expended about N10billion trying to put the worst set of schools back in place.

“This year, a major intervention is also going to take place from our budget to see that at least let the existing schools even compete favourably with the private sector schools. That is the whole idea. I went to a public school and I must give back. Then, some of our riverine areas don’t really have schools. If you go to Ilaje and other places, there are no schools there and you see people taking canoes to go to school. So, that intervention is what we are also doing this year to see that there is continuous capital expenditure in public schools,” Governor Ambode said.

He said over 2300 qualified teachers have also being employed and posted across the various primary and secondary schools in the State to improve the performance of students, which according to him is already yielding results.

Explaining the delay in the take off for the A-Meal-A-Day programme, the Governor said his administration was working towards a sustainable plan for the programme to cater for the eventual take off.

He said that since the programme was a combination of resources from the Federal Government in partnership with State Governments, it was pertinent that the necessary funds to be provided to prevent hiccups after the take off.

“Yes, it was in our manifesto but again in practical terms, we are still on it. The number of students in Lagos and the budgetary provision also do not really match for us to start. I don’t like a situation whereby we come out for two to three months and then stop.

“I will like to sustain it when we start and don’t forget also that the project is a combination of resources from the Federal in partnership with State Governments. So, obviously in terms of provisions and resources, we in Lagos think we should have a long drawn sustainable plan and that is why we have not started it. What I can assure the people is that we are working on it,” Governor Ambode said.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday swore in three new judges into the State Judiciary, with a charge on them to maintain a high standard of professional competence and integrity to be able to dispense justice to all manners of people without fear or favour, affection or ill will.

The new judges are former Director of the State’s Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Idowu Alakija; former Chief Registrar, High Court of Lagos State, Olugbemiga Ogundare; and former Deputy Registrar of the Court, Serifat Solebo.

Speaking at the Banquet Hall of Lagos House in Ikeja, venue of the ceremony, Governor Ambode said the swearing in of the judges, which was the first of his administration, signified another milestone in his commitment to enhance the quality of life of the people through a justice administration system that is just and fair.

He said over the years, the State Judiciary, apart from being the busiest and most vibrant in the country, had established a reputation for itself as a trail blazer in the entire federation with intellectual judicial pronouncements that have stood the test of time at appellate courts, hence the new judges must also contribute positively to the advancement of administration of justice.

The Governor added that the niche which the State Judiciary had carved for itself over the years was achieved through various reforms that were initiated and faithfully implemented by succeeding leaderships of the State Judiciary in partnership with Executive and Legislature, and pledged that his administration would initiate key reforms in the sector especially in areas of infrastructure, technology, people and processes and improved welfare for the judiciary.

He said the reforms would be based on the recommendations of the recently held Justice Summit by the State’s Ministry of Justice which brought together several stakeholders in the justice sector.

He said: “I congratulate the newly appointed judges for being
adjudged fit and proper persons to be on the respected higher bench of the busiest and most vibrant State judiciary in the country.

“In the end, we hope to bequeath a more vibrant and qualitative judiciary and justice sector fit for the 21st century and beyond. It is also my hope that with the caliber and qualities of these new learned personalities, our bench will be further enriched to effectively discharge its constitutional functions and deliver hope and justice to our people.

“My lords, may I remind you that by these appointments, your conducts and carriage will become subject of public scrutiny. Earlier, the State’s Chief Judge, Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade thanked Governor Ambode for approving the exercise that led to the appointment of the judges, as well as other stakeholders who contributed in the painstaking appointment process.

Besides, the CJ also urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen to approve the appointment of more judges for Lagos State Judiciary, being the busiest in the country.
“On the average, a judge in Lagos has over 500 to 600 cases in his or her docket. I was talking with the Chief Judge of Ekiti State the other time and I was told that the whole of the Judiciary of the State has just 400 cases. So, I like to renew my call to the CJN to approve more judges for us and I also urge Governor Ambode to approve another appointment process,” Justice Atilade said.

She also urged the newly appointed judges to embrace hard work and dispense justice without fear or favour.

Responding on behalf of the appointees, Justice Alakija thanked Governor Ambode for their appointments, and pledged that they would carry out their duties diligently and abide by the code of conduct.

International Women’s day celebration, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule has called on women from all walks of life to unite together and speak with one voice that all forms of discrimination, domestic violence and gender inequality against women be stopped with immediate effect.

Adebule noted that the annual International Women’s Day celebration by the United Nations is in recognition of the important roles that women play in the political, social and economic development of the society, adding that in spite of all the barriers being faced in the society, women over the years have broken the walls of limitation to be highly successful in their chosen careers.

Adebule who described the theme for the year 2017 International Women’s Day Celebration, “BE BOLD FOR CHANGE” as relevant and instructive, stated that it is a clarion call for women to unite, come together and take bold and pragmatic steps to accelerate gender parity and fight all forms of discriminations that have hindered women development.

“We all must work in synergy to ensure all girls have access to free, equitable and quality education. Our unity of purpose must be to help all women to end all forms of discrimination, assault, abuse, trafficking, and harmful practices such as early and forced marriages”, Adebule advised.

The Deputy Governor who noted that, though, there had been some significant efforts by government in many countries to remove all barriers being faced by women and the girl-child to guarantee their full right and freedom, there is still need for women to rise against other forms of discrimination and abuse against them that still persist in some other regions.

While commending the Lagos State government for implementing programmes and policies geared towards repositioning women to meet new challenges for their development, Adebule disclosed that the State government has been focused and proactive in the formulation of policies that ensure fairness, equality and full protection of women and girl-child rights in the State.

“In the Lagos State public service for instance, all persons irrespective of gender are treated equally in the areas of recruitment, promotion and career progression, while it is worth noting that the last four successive Heads of Service in the State have been women”, adding that women have been occupying the position of Chief Justice of the State in the last eight years.

In addition, Adebule stated that Lagos State government has taken a bold step to be the first to inaugurate the Domestic and Sexual Violent Response Team (DSVRT), the Agency saddled with the responsibility of protecting women and the girl-child from violence and abuse by reporting and prosecuting any offender of the act.

In her goodwill message, the Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Bolanle Ambode, said the International Women’s Day celebration is highly significant towards acknowledging the achievements of women and appreciate the contributions they have made to the socio-economic development in the society.

While acknowledging and appreciating the role of women in politics, economy, academia and manufacturing, she urged women to come out of their shell, take bold steps and refuse to be limited in their vision to achieve their hearts’ desire.

“Change is the only permanent thing in life; it signifies progress and overcoming the barriers to achieving greatness. We, must, therefore, embrace change with boldness and by so doing open a new door of opportunities for ourselves”, she said.

Earlier in her welcome address, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Lola Akande, enjoined women to see themselves as potential leaders and be committed to pragmatic actions which would foster women emancipation and advancement.

She stated that this year’s International Women Day celebration is noteworthy as it coincides with the Lagos State 50th Anniversary Celebrations and therefore called on women to reflect on how they can collectively and individually be ready for a change that will totally free them from intimidation, oppression and discrimination as manifested in the theme of the celebration “Be bold for change”, urging them to have a mindset that says no to domestic violence, gender discrimination and its attendant repercussions.

The Commissioner further used the occasion to urge mothers to develop themselves in order to have constructive engagement with their children

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday declared the readiness of the State Government to take over the Surulere National Stadium from the Federal Government and transform the facility from its present deplorable condition to a world class sporting centre.

Speaking after embarking on an extensive inspection tour of the facilities in the Stadium alongside the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalung; Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Mr. Amaju Pinnick and other top government functionaries, Governor Ambode said it was unfortunate how things had degenerated, but expressed preparedness to hit the ground running towards restoring the old glory of the Stadium once officially handed over to the State.

The Governor, who recalled how enthusiastic and interesting it was for people in the past to visit the Surulere Stadium even with their families to watch matches and catch fun among others, said repositioning the Stadium would not only help to bring about layers of employment but that it would also facilitate family bonding.

He said: “This visit is very historic. I recall that during our campaign, we promised that we are going to use tourism, entertainment and arts and sports to drive youth employment as well as drive excellence. So, this is just one chapter in that roadmap to growing the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Lagos.

“With the state of affairs here, we cannot fold our arms and just leave this monument to just waste away. The last match that was played here was about fifteen years ago but the truth is this, the inner key to youth empowerment and youth employment is actually in re-establishing this edifice to its real world class standard,” he said.

The Governor thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for graciously approving that the Ahmadu Bello Stadium be given to Kaduna State as well as Enugu Stadium and Calabar Stadium be given to Enugu and Akwa Ibom State Governments respectively.

“What we ask for in Lagos is not as if we are being aggressive, we just think that we need to stand up for leadership here and take over the National Stadium,” the Governor said.

The Governor also commended the Sports Minister for spearheading the move to handover the Stadium to Lagos State and expressed optimism that the journey which had started would eventually lead to a formal pronouncement.

He said aside the fact that the State Government was already planning to construct five stadia in the five administrative divisions of the State to grow sports, the government also has a functional agency in charge of facility management, assuring that the Surulere Stadium would be properly and efficiently managed once handed over to the State.

Earlier, Dalung lamented the dilapidated condition of the Stadium which he described as a national disaster, just as he called for serious and comprehensive action to reposition the Stadium and return it to its pride of place.

While expressing confidence in the ability of the State Government to transform it, Dalung specially thanked Governor Ambode for his interest and commitment to the success of the move to reposition the Stadium.

“We have gone round and we have seen the edifice in a sorry state. Whatever we can do to arrest the situation, we must do it. In my village, there is an adage, which says once there is fire disaster, there is no choice of liquid and any liquid that can contribute to extinguish the fire, must be mobilized including liquor. But today, we have a disaster and we must do everything possible to extinguish it.

“I want to thank the Governor for finding time to come. I have received what I can call football gossip from football federation that if the Surulere Stadium is handed over to Lagos and renovated in six months, the next match of Nigeria against Zambia would be played here,” the Minister said.

He also appealed to Governor Ambode to revamp the Stationary Stores Football Club of Lagos.

Some of the facilities inspected at the Stadium include the Molade Okoya Tennis Hall, 3000 Capacity Multi-Purpose Indoor Sports Hall, Beach Soccer Pitch, Synthetic Football Pitch and the 38,000 Capacity Main Bowl Football Field.
