Yomi Durojaye

… Offender remanded in Kirikiri till June 26

A joint enforcement team, comprising officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC/KAI), has arrested Mr. Ogunbadejo Olawale, a resident of No. 25 Ajiboye Street, Alapere, Ketu, caught in a viral video dumping waste on Alapere link bridge, Ketu. He has been remanded at the Kirikiri Prison by the Environmental and Special Offences Court, sitting at Oshodi, with case adjourned till 26th June 2025.

Speaking on the matter, the Honourable Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, expressed deep concern over the continued disregard for environmental regulations by some residents, emphasising that the state government would not relent in its efforts to identify and prosecute individuals who violate sanitation laws.

He said, “The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to environmental enforcement with the arrest of Mr. Ogunbadejo Olawale, a resident of No 25, Ajiboye Street, Alapere, Ketu, for illegal waste dumping. The arrest was effected by a joint enforcement operation carried out by the operatives of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), following credible surveillance and tip-offs from members of the community.”

Wahab stressed that environmental enforcement would be intensified across all local government areas, noting that surveillance activities were being upgraded and that defaulters would be prosecuted without hesitation, warning that the era of impunity was over, as no one is above the law.

“We have launched a multi-agency collaboration involving LAWMA, LAGESC/KAI, and other stakeholders to strengthen monitoring and enforcement. Let this serve as a stern warning to others: Residents must comply with the state’s waste management guidelines or face legal consequences,” he added.

The Commissioner urged community leaders, residents, and environmental volunteers to remain vigilant and continue to work with the state in reporting infractions, assuring that such civic efforts would be matched with swift action from government agencies.

Confirming the development, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, condemned the offender’s action and reiterated the Authority’s unwavering resolve to stamp out illegal waste disposal practices.

“This arrest is a strong message to those who persist in sabotaging the state’s environmental agenda. Lagos is not a dumping ground. We have invested heavily in infrastructure and personnel to maintain cleanliness across the metropolis. Anyone caught polluting public spaces will face the full weight of the law. The days of indiscriminate waste disposal are over,” he said.

Gbadegesin also acknowledged the crucial role played by residents of the Alapere community in bringing the incident to light, calling it a prime example of citizen-driven environmental vigilance.

“The success of our enforcement drive is deeply rooted in community partnership. I want to sincerely thank the residents of Alapere for their vigilance. Their input led to this arrest, and it demonstrates that when citizens and government work together, positive change is inevitable. Let us remain committed to protecting our environment for today and for future generations,” he added.

He assured Lagosians that LAWMA, in collaboration with relevant sister agencies, would continue to scale up enforcement, advocacy, and community engagement initiatives to ensure total compliance with waste management laws.

The LAWMA boss appealed to residents to embrace proper waste disposal practices, use PSP operators, and avoid patronising outlawed cart pushers, warning that all offenders would be tracked, arrested, and prosecuted as part of the state’s holistic environmental management strategy.

Also speaking, the Corps Marshal of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC/KAI), Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (Rtd), stated that the law would continue to catch up with individuals engaging in acts that deface and endanger the environment, describing the suspect’s action as reckless and counterproductive to the state’s environmental sustainability efforts.

“We are scaling up patrols and intelligence gathering, especially in areas prone to illegal dumping. No one who violates environmental laws will go unpunished. The long arm of the law will find you. I urge all residents to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal, as this threatens public health, damages infrastructure, and erodes the government’s commitment to a cleaner Lagos,” he said.

He further encouraged Lagosians to be law-abiding and to make use of approved waste disposal services to avoid legal consequences.

For waste management-related issues, complaints, and inquiries, please call LAWMA’s toll-free numbers: 080000LAWMA (08000052962), 07080601020, and 617, or send an email to info@lawma.gov.ng.

APC primary: Obasa urges tolerance, unity among aspirants ahead of Lagos council polls

Yomi Durojaye

Ahead of the July 12 local government elections in Lagos State, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has called for unity and tolerance among political stakeholders in Agege and Orile-Agege, particularly those who contested in the recently concluded chairmanship primaries.

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting held on Sunday at Central Primary School, Agege, Obasa appealed to aggrieved aspirants to trust the judgment of party leaders and accept the outcome of the primaries in good faith.

He acknowledged that all the aspirants were qualified to lead but emphasised that leadership positions are limited and governed by due process.

“There is none of the aspirants that is not qualified,” he said. “But we must understand that this is not a family inheritance—it is a political position governed by law and procedure, and only one person can occupy the seat at a time.”

Obasa urged aspirants who were not successful to channel their disappointment constructively within the party and not allow frustration to escalate into conflict.

“I was once a victim like some of you,” he added, “but it is important to keep our grievances within the party and move forward united.”

“But you must learn to exercise patience and have confidence in the process. You must believe in the judgement of our leaders. Everybody is qualified to be a leader but all of us cannot be a leader. Learn to trust the party and its leaders. We must not fight them. If we want to appeal, let’s start now.”

He observed that the forthcoming local government polls is a litmus  test on the 2027 general election reason all hands must be on deck to attain victory.

He added, “We must reach out to others. Let’s make them understand the need to come back. If they didn’t get it today, it will be their turn tomorrow. We must work together. We cannot do it alone. This isn’t the ultimate. We are much interested in the 2027 election. But we will use this to measure what will happen in 2027. This isn’t about the chairmanship and councillorship election; it goes beyond that. Our target is 2027. So, let’s bring everybody out to vote.

“If we can increase the number of votes, we had in 2023 during this local poll then we can go to rest. We must bring everybody together and the journey starts now. We must learn to tolerate one another. We must intensify our efforts and reach out to members of the community to come out to vote.”

Speaking on unity and cohesion among members of the party in the council areas, Chairman, Agege Local Government Area, Hon. Ganiyu Egunjobi, there are no aggrieved members in Agege noting that all members are one and united family.

He said, “We have only one APC in Agege. I don’t understand what you meant by disunity. All I understand is that during election period, many people aspire to the positions. There is nothing wrong in that. About 20 or 40 people can aspire for just one seat but after the primary, its important we bring ourselves together as one to support the party candidate.

“We have the crowd. These are party members. They came out of their desire, nobody forced them. All of these people you are seeing are from Agege. They are here for sensitisation. We want them to go back to their various homes and reach out to others on the need to come out to vote on July 12. There are no aggrieved politicians in Agege. We are one united family.”

His counterpart in Orile-Agege LCDA, Hon. Johnson Babatunde, described the gathering as solidarity and declaration of support to the party candidates.

He urged the winners at the primaries to be humble in victory while urging the losers to be sportsmanlike in defeat.

He said, “It’s a solidarity with our candidates in Agege local government and Orile-Agege LCDA. In Agege, our chairmanship candidate is Hon. Tunde Azeez while the vice-chairmanship candidate is Abdul-Ganiu Obasa.

“In Orile-Agege, we have Akinola Idowu as the chairman and Wale Fayemi as the vice-chairman. We are here in solidarity and to declare our support that we are solidly behind them. You can see the number of people that are here, that shows we have popular candidates on the ballot.”

Member representing Agege Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. (Dr) Wale Ahmed, described the gathering as an APC event to mobilise and sensitise the masses on the need to vote for the candidates of the party.

He stated, “The leadership of the party has successfully chosen candidates for the forthcoming local government polls. We are here to motivate and energise the people towards the July 12 local government elections.”

Lagos APC Receives Over 100 Petitions Challenging Local Government Chairmanship and Councillorship Primaries

Eniola Ajose

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is currently grappling with internal turmoil, as its Appeal Committee has received over 100 petitions from aggrieved aspirants following last Saturday’s controversial local government primaries.

Lagos Reporters gathered that the petitions, which include 45 from chairmanship aspirants and 59 from councillorship hopefuls, are contesting the outcomes of the primaries conducted across the 57 local government areas and local council development areas (LCDAs) in the state.

The primary elections, held at the party’s secretariat on ACME Road through indirect voting and consensus arrangements, have sparked widespread outrage. Since the announcement of results, angry party members have taken to the streets in areas such as Agege, Ikeja, and Somolu to protest what they describe as imposition of candidates by party leaders.

In response to the crisis, the party inaugurated an Appeal Committee led by Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), to address grievances. According to APC spokesperson Oluseye Oladejo, the committee received all 104 petitions before its Tuesday noon deadline and is expected to conclude its assignment this week.

Meanwhile, civil society organisation United Action for Democracy (UAD) has weighed in on the issue, demanding an independent investigation into the conduct of the APC primaries. Addressing journalists at a press conference in Abule Egba, UAD General Secretary Kunle Ajayi condemned what he described as a “subversion of democratic norms.”

“The APC primaries are a textbook example of how local government autonomy and true democracy are being undermined. The implications go beyond Lagos and may affect the credibility of the 2027 general elections,” Ajayi warned.

As tensions rise within the ruling party, the political atmosphere ahead of the July 12 council elections remains charged.

Jamb: Oloyede Admits Errors in Tears, Reschedule Exams

Yomi Durojaye

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has acknowledged that technical glitches affected candidates’ performance during the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Jamb: Oloyede Admits Errors in Tears, Reschedule Exams

The Board announced that 379,997 candidates in Lagos and Nigeria’s South-East region will have to retake their exams following the discovery of errors in their results processing.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, tearfully apologised during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, taking full responsibility for what he described as a regrettable technical oversight.

Oloyede explained that the problem originated from a service provider responsible for Lagos and South-East zones, who failed to properly update delivery servers after a system patch.

This error, which went unnoticed before results were released, affected 65 centres in Lagos (206,610 candidates) and 92 centres in the South-East (173,387 candidates).

He said affected candidates will receive text messages, emails, and phone calls starting Thursday, with instructions to reprint their examination slips.

The rescheduled UTME will commence on Friday, May 16, 2025, with arrangements made alongside WAEC to prevent timetable clashes.

Prof. Oloyede reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and equity, promising tighter safeguards to prevent such incidents in future exams.

Some of the stakeholders present at the briefing expressed satisfaction with JAMB’s transparency, commending the Board for openly admitting the error and promptly rescheduling the examination for affected candidates.

They described the decision as a responsible and reassuring move for the integrity of the country’s education system.

Recall that, over 75% of candidates scored below 200 out of 400 marks in the 2025 UTME, nationwide concern has continued to grow over academic performance.

LASG REAFFIRMS 10% CAP ON TENANCY AGREEMENT FEES, WARNS AGAINST ILLEGAL CHARGES

Eniola Ajose

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its stance against the imposition of excessive tenancy agreement fees, reminding all stakeholders within the state that the stipulated maximum remains 10% of the annual rent.

This declaration was made by the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Housing, Barrister. Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.

Barr. Odunuga-Bakare underscored the clarity and unambiguous nature of the Lagos State Tenancy Law, stating unequivocally that any landlord or agent found demanding or collecting more than 10 per cent of the annual rent as agreement or legal fees is in direct violation of the state’s tenancy regulations.

Expressing concern over reports of unscrupulous practices, the Special Adviser stated, "We have been overwhelmed by reports of the activities of these unscrupulous elements making life hard for Lagosians with agreements and commissions that is like asking for an arm and a leg. We are calling on members of the public not to keep silent but to report such agents and landlords to us for the government cannot be everywhere, every time”.

Acknowledging the significant challenges posed by the nation's burgeoning population and increasing rural-urban migration on the state's housing sector, Barr. Odunuga-Bakare recognised that this situation has unfortunately created opportunities for some individuals to exploit vulnerable residents. However, she firmly asserted the State Government's unwavering commitment to regulating and sanitising the housing sector to protect the interests of Lagosians.

Furthermore, Barr. Odunuga-Bakare highlighted the collaborative efforts between the government and recognised associations of real estate agents. "We have met with associations of real estate agents, and they have assured us that the people who are engaging in such practices are not registered agents that identify with their associations," she noted, suggesting that these illegal activities are often perpetrated by unregistered individuals operating outside the purview of established professional bodies."

The Lagos State Government urges all residents who encounter demands for tenancy agreement fees exceeding the legally mandated 10% to report such incidents through the Lagos State Real Estate Regulating Authority (LASRERA) on Facebook, Instagram: lasrera 1 and X (formerly Twitter) @lasrera

This call to action aims to empower citizens and ensure the effective enforcement of the Tenancy Law, thereby fostering a fairer and more transparent housing market in Lagos State.

How A 19-year-old, Faith Timilehin, took her own life after scoring 190 in 2025 UTME

Eniola Ajose

Faith Timilehin took her own life in Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos State on Monday

The teenager, originally from Abeokuta, had been living with her elder sister in Ikorodu. According to family and neighbours, Timilehin was a calm and respectful young woman with high academic hopes. She had applied to study Microbiology and was deeply disappointed by her score of 190, which she considered lower than her 2024 result.

“She said her last year’s result was better than this year’s,” a close friend told News Central on the phone.

After ingesting a substance known locally as Push Out-a common rodent poison Timilehin reportedly went to her sister’s office and asked for palm oil to ease the pain. Her sister, unaware of what had happened, initially ignored her request. Moments later, she raised an alarm when Timilehin’s condition worsened, attracting neighbours and sympathisers.

An eyewitness confirmed that Timilehin eventually confessed on the way to the hospital that she had consumed poison at home before visiting her sister’s workplace.

Efforts to save her life proved futile. She was pronounced dead at Kolak Hospital, Odogunyan.

Merely 30 minutes after her death, a provisional admission message from JAMB arrived in her Gmail inbox.

“The shocking revelation is that she was given an admission message via her Gmail yesterday, immediately after she was confirmed dead at Kolak Hospital, Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos,” a family source stated. Following the incident, her grieving parents arrived from Abeokuta and took her body home for burial.

The leaders in their statement said those faulting the process that led to the emergence of APC candidates for the chairmanship and councillorship in all the 13 wards abandoned the party and the communities long ago.

"As far as we are concerned, the primary elections were free and fair; and suggestion by some elements that the candidates that emerged were imposed on them is misleading.

"Those making this false claims are sore losers; and for years ostracised themselves from APC and our communities.

"To put it in context, the likes of MD of Nigerian Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, ex-House of Representatives member, Dr Samuel Adejare, and three-time House of Assembly member, Oluyinka Ogundimu  are not involved in the activities of the party in both councils.

"In the same boat is Biodun Ogunji, a chairmanship aspirant in Agege who lives in the UK with his family but weeks back came down to Nigeria for the purpose of his aspiration.

"Same thing with his fellow-failed aspirant, Bukola Sofidiya, aka Gidado, a US-based Agege politician and Sola Osolana who was the chairmanship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Agege in the last council election in the state.

"It is a general knowledge that the leadership of the party in the state in their wisdom adopted consensus or delegate voting for the primaries with party local government excos as the voters.

"In Agege and Orile-Agege, excos members were constituted about four years ago when the aforementioned persons distanced themselves from the party in both council areas and its activities; as well as stayed away from our dear communities.

"In that context, it's only people with limited education and obscurity of positions that would consider themselves as  contenders and not pretenders in the just concluded primaries," the Comminique partly read.

THINGS YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON WHEN RAISING A BOY CHILD

THINGS YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON WHEN RAISING A BOY CHILD

BOY

Whether you believe it not, male misogynistic behavior is so deep-rooted in our society that raising boys how they really should be has become very difficult. There is a very famous and widely-used saying that “boys will be boys”, which has made it like a standard practice for parents to ignore and promote some of the major toxic behaviors any human can possess.

I often find myself questioning if we are parenting our boys right. The problem I face all the time is to distinguish between normal behaviors versus what might lead our boys towards the “boys will be boys approach”.

THINGS YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON WHEN RAISING A BOY — THE DO’S

The negative stigma that surrounds boys and their upbringing is more cultural than biological. Society has developed the image of a perfect man to be strong, unemotional, competitive, fearless, rowdy, and powerful. Even so that we have also declared that it is a man’s world. That right there is an extremely negative connotation to embed in any child’s mind.

FIRSTLY, you need to accept that boys and girls are different. There is no one size fits all parenting model. You have to mold your parenting techniques as per the attitudes and behaviors of your child. However, for boys you need to focus on the following to support their UPBRINGING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION:

TEACHING BOUNDARIES

When we talk about boundaries, parents often think that they need to teach girls about boundaries. However, boys need to be taught about boundaries too, where they should able to enforce their boundaries and respect others as well.

Boundaries do not only imply physical limitations like touching, hugging, kissing, etc. Boundaries can be physical, emotional, intellectual, material, time, and relational. Teaching your child about boundaries is enabling them to learn about their right of yes or no.

PHYSICAL BOUNDARIES — Raising boys who are aware of their physical boundaries is no less important than teaching girls about it. Nobody should touch him without his permission and he should do the same by not touching others without their permission.

EMOTIONAL BOUNDARIES — This involves letting your son choose who and to what extent he wants to open up about his emotions. Like, if your son doesn’t like sharing his problems or feelings with grandma or uncle then you shouldn’t force him to do it either. Similarly, respecting others’ emotional boundaries.

INTELLECTUAL BOUNDARIES — Such boundaries revolve around your thoughts and ideas. A healthy intellectual boundary means that your son should be able to develop his own ideas and thoughts. As well as respect others with a different perspective.

MATERIAL BOUNDARIES — We often want our children to share everything they have with their siblings or friends. What we don’t know is that healthy material boundaries are necessary. Your child has a right to choose whether they want to share their toys, space, or any other belonging. Similarly, being considerate of others’ belongings and space.

TIME BOUNDARIES — This type of boundary will help your son understand how to prioritize his time and how important a certain thing is. He always has choices of how and where he would like to spend his time. Also, bring self-care into his priority.

RELATIONAL BOUNDARIES — It’s one of the common boundaries that most people are already aware of. It means teaching your son that he doesn’t have to interact with every single person in the room.

Teaching your son about boundaries will help him gain more confidence and he will become clear about his own needs and feelings. Plus, it will teach him to respect others and their boundaries from a very early age.

ENCOURAGING EMOTIONAL GROWTH

When it comes to emotions and boys, we tend to always separate the two. However, emotions are a natural human expression and everybody has a right to feel and express them. I am sure you must have heard someone saying “boys don’t cry” at least once in your lifetime.

It’s because of such stereotyping that boys learn to hold their emotions in, which turns into anger and frustration later on. Michael C. Reichert, a psychologist and a very famous author of How to Raise a Boy — The Power of Connection to Build Good Men says, emotions are like energy. They don’t do away on their own. They always translate into something. In such cases, it mostly misbehavior.

One of the best things that you can do for your son is listening to him and let him express his feelings without any judgment. Remember that you listening to your son is not the same as agreeing. It is only the first step to creating a relationship and coming with the solution together.

Once your son grasps that he doesn’t have to be afraid of rejection, failure, or judgment he will be more open to sharing his feelings, needs, and aspirations.

There are a few things that will help you to ENCOURAGE YOUR SON’S EMOTIONAL GROWTH:

Let him explore his feelings and don’t jump to solutions right away

Create a safe environment where he can think about his strengths and weaknesses

Avoid telling your son that he is behaving like a girl or he shouldn’t feel a certain way

Accept his feelings and help him understand them

Don’t call him names for feeling a certain thing

BE A GOOD ROLE MODEL

Most parents would constantly reject and ignore their son’s feelings or emotions (sometimes unintentionally) just to keep their son growing up as “manly” as he can.

When you teach your son how to handle and express his emotions respectfully, you are indeed helping your son take a giant step towards manhood. Because the world is enough to toughen up your little boy. Your job is to support and nurture his personality with kindness and compassion.

COMMUNICATE TO BUILD A STRONG RELATIONSHIP

Building a strong relationship with your children is extremely important. And effective communication plays a great role in it. Sometimes, there will also be days when sparking a daily conversation would feel like a major task. And that’s completely fine.

The number one rule towards healthy communication is being attentive followed by being non-judgemental. Have you ever thought about why you wouldn’t want to share something with your parents (if that’s the case)? Probably because you are afraid to be rejected, judged, or misunderstood.

Your children feel the same way. Especially boys, because they are expected to figure everything out on their own, behave a certain way, and be strong in every circumstance. Now think, is it really wise to expect your son to behave properly and do as you say even when you are not providing him with nurturing.

While raising boys, it becomes very important to constantly keep up with meaningful and healthy conversations. Most boys are filled with energy which makes it difficult for them to be still in one place. Here are some important points to keep in mind while establishing healthy communication to build a strong relationship with your son:

QUALITY IS KEY — This comprises of two things. Firstly, the conversations should be one-on-one without any distractions. Secondly, the matter of your conversations should be interesting as well. It is very unlikely that your son will engage if all you are doing is lecturing him. Rather, you can share your stories and give him some time to process them. If it doesn’t work then you can always opt for effective disciplinary actions.

BE ATTENTIVE AND AVAILABLE — There is no point in communicating if you are not 100 percent there and you have a million things running at the same time. This is almost the same as the previous point. Focus on the quality of the time rather than seizing every opportunity you have.

FOCUS ON WHAT HE IS TRYING TO CONVEY — When your son communicates with you. Things may come out as confusing. Therefore, always focus on understanding between the lines and his body language. Your focus should on understanding him rather than pressurizing him about what you think is right.

SEPARATE BEHAVIOR FROM CHILD — Children tend to make several mistakes and that’s normal. If your son is misbehaving, it does not mean that he is a bad boy. Children are in a learning process for a very long period of time. Accept, remind, and discipline your son with love and compassion.

Don’ Try To Be His Friend — Parents who try to become friends with their children often erase the fine line of authority. Raising boys especially, need a parent who can hold the authority and let their child know who is in charge even after being extremely nurturing, helpful, and supportive.

GIVE HIM SPACE AND TIME — Even children need some space of their own. As a parent, you need to understand that you have to accept your child’s space. It’s better to accept rather than give a rise to negative feelings.

Even when you are laying out straight house rules and expectations, keep in mind to make a mutual decision and let your son know that you love him. As parents, we are there to protect, nurture, and help our children to discover the best of them. And not to pressurize them into doing things that we think or want!

CREATE A SAFE SPACE

Becoming a stable, healthy, and happy adult requires a lot to be done in the early years of life. Most parents tend to ignore the fact that raising boys doesn’t mean that you have to be as tough as the world outside. Home is a safe sanctuary for every child.

Believe it or not, even your son would love to spend time with you than do anything else most of the time. Yes, when boys grow up, they like life differently. But the safe space you created in their early years has done more benefit to them than you can imagine.

Creating a safe space would encourage a family culture. It helps your son to recharge and get ready for the world in the best way possible. Even teenagers and adults find safe spaces to be an enormous gift where they can feel secure, happy, and comfortable after tough days at school or workplaces.

Here are a couple of things you can keep in mind while creating a safe space for your son:

GIVE RESPECT TO GET RESPECT — If you are continuously shaming or humiliating your son, then you are creating a stressful environment and nobody likes stress.

CHILDREN CAN’T BE PRESSURED ALL THE TIME — The core of a safe space is a place that is easy, well-structured, and has a calming vibe. If you have harsh rules and obligations that you are trying to impose all the time, then you are not fulfilling the purpose of a safe space.

PROVIDE A WELL-STRUCTURED HOME — Children like knowing what they are supposed to do next. Therefore, it’s best to come up with a structured plan for your home with house rules and a schedule so that your son knows what to expect next. This way your home will run smoothly without you reminding again and again.

SCREEN-TIME LIMITATIONS — Excessive screen-time is not good for you or your kids anyway. Plus, it takes away the time you could have spent together as a family. You can read more about how to work with effective screen time here.

PLAN FUN ACTIVITIES — Another way to make your home vibe happy for your son is to plan different activities (that aren’t forced). This way you get to spend some quality time and share a cheerful experience together.

Boys too need their family in their life who they can rely on, especially emotionally. It is essential that as parents you create a strong relationship, a safe, and non-judgmental space where your children can learn about mindfulness, empathy, and how to create healthy relationships.

THINGS TO DEFINITELY CORRECT OR AVOID WHEN RAISING BOYS — THE DON’TS

Once you are done laying the positive parenting techniques for your child, you should focus on attitudes and behaviors that might be leading in the wrong direction. These might be things that you might be encouraging unintentionally or intentionally.

Raising boys with such attitudes and behaviors is almost like messing up your next generation. Because these boys will grow up to be men who are emotionally unstable, toxic, misogynistic, challenged, troublesome and even bad fathers.

STOP STEREOTYPING

“This is for boys and this is for girls” is not one of the smartest ways to start your parenting journey. From a very early age, most parents would set straight rules for boys and girls differently. I understand that the aim here is mostly to make boys manly.

But stereotyping doesn’t serve the purpose. Men who were raised in stereotypical families were far more complexed, depressed, and unhappy as compared to men who were raised differently. Here are few things that you can do to avoid stereotyping:

Let your son play with whatever he likes. Playing with a kitchen set isn’t going to cause any harm

Provide examples with non-traditional gender roles. Like female pilots and male nurses.

Lead by example. Divide and share household duties with your spouse to show cleaning and kitchen are not only for women.

Ask your son to help with household chores

Always avoid comments that give girls a negative status e.g don’t cry like a girl or it’s a girl’s job to do this.

Discourage feeling of superiority

Stereotyping and treating little boys as the king of the house leads them to feel superior. It is actually one of the most toxic traits a man can have. More than anything it’s the mom who supports this feeling of superiority in a boy over anybody else by treating him differently from her daughter.

A recent survey showed that most fourth-graders which also included girls believe that their fathers rule their house. The study also showed that many young boys believe they are smarter than girls and the girls need less school than boys.

Such men grow up disrespecting and disregarding everybody in their lives, let alone the women. Instead, teach your son to be respectful regardless of gender, religion, race, or status. This is how you can raise your son to a gentleman:

TREAT YOUR CHILDREN EQUALLY

Avoid any gender-based privileges like boys can come in late but girls aren’t allowed to go past 7 pm.

In fact, treat your daughters better

Show that no gender is superior by stopping stereotyping

Teach him to respect every being by respecting them yourself first

Limit the amount of violence your son is exposed to

Boys are expected to be aggressive, tough, and violent. This is again one of those silly expectations which “prove” that he is a “man”. Such expectations have literally spoiled several generations and are on the way to do the same in the future.

The rough and tough image is not an image every man would like to go for. But the pressures from society have made it a norm. Little boys observe that behavior and then adapt it. They feel it’s completely normal to be violent and aggressive in a way that threatens others. Instead, try this:

TEACH TO RESOLVE CONFLICT WITH PEACE

Show examples in the family or around you of men who are strong yet kind and gentle

Help him to handle his emotions in an appropriate way

Accept his emotions and let him know that feeling anger and frustration is normal but he cannot threaten people

Teach him to deal with peer pressure with ease and peace

Take into account gender-based harassment

Another point that most boys find okay to do is gender-based harassment. The mindset of being superior and tough leads most boys, young and adult, towards shaming, insulting, bullying, taunting, and name-calling girls and even boys who aren’t as masculine.

Plus, they think it’s okay to harass people as it shows they are strong and everyone is below them. It is extremely toxic behavior that needs to be accounted for from a very early age. Interestingly, everything starts at home whether you realize it or not. Here’s what you need to do:

Call him out the moment you see him committing harassment

Never make a joke on someone based on their gender — because your son is always watching you

Teach him to respect others and their boundaries

Showing that there are a lot of ways to be a man/boy than being arrogant, aggressive, and shitty

Never ignore early signs of harassment like calling girls with slurry names and disregarding them because they are feminine.

TAKE AWAY

Tiny mistakes that are made continuously can make a huge shift in how your child turns out to be as an adult. And, it’s okay to make mistakes. But, it’s necessary is to identify where you might be going wrong and then correcting it as soon as you can.

Parents need to understand that treating their sons differently to their daughters, pressurizing to behave “manly”, disregarding their son’s emotions, and leading by negative examples is perhaps damaging the true personality of their son.

You don’t need to worry. The world is enough to shape your little boy into the man you hope he would become. A child spends most of his time at home observing and adapting to what their parents do. Therefore, your focus should be on giving the best environment to your son where he can actually see and learn how to be a gentleman. Rather than spoiling your son in the name of love.
