Mrs Bolanle Ambode (m), supported by CEO. HOFOWEM, Ms. Oyefunke Adeleke (L), to present Xmas gifts to Miss Oluwatimileyin Bamgbade

Commenting on the gesture, the founder of HOFOWEM, Bolanle Ambode, noted that it was intended to put smiles on the faces of those children and integrate them into the celebration of christmas.

Mrs Bolanle Ambode (m) supported by CEO. HOFOWEM, Ms. Oyefunke Adeleke (2nd right); and MD. Massey Street Children’s Hospital, Lagos, Dr. Olugbenga Aina  (r), to present Xmas gifts to Miss Zainab Kotun

What Christmas requires of all of us, is to show love and spread happiness among everyone including children. They are young persons, they need our care and special expression of love to partake in the celebrations.

Christmas celebrations are not complete when we have not touched these children tenderly. As it were, this is just a token of love for the children from the foundation.

Speaking further, the governors wife noted that the cardinal philosophy of her foundation was to affect the lives of less-privileged persons, through interventions that bring radical improvement for them. She recalled that HOFOWEM had organized various programmes in the past, with the sole objective of putting smiles on the faces of that category of persons, promising that the foundation would unfold more children and women-friendly programmes in the coming year.

Also speaking, the commissioner for health, Dr. Jide Idris, represented by Dr. Funmilayo Shokunbi, expressed appreciation to the governors wife and the foundation, stressing that, the gesture would go a long way in putting smiles on the faces of the children.

According to him, This noble gesture goes a long way in putting not just smiles on the faces of the children, but also demonstrates your genuine love and care for them.

That you have left the comfort of your home at this period to spend time with these children, goes a long way in showing your heart of meekness, kindness and love and there is no better way to express love and integrate the children into the celebration of the yuletide, than this visit Dr Idris stressed.

The chief executive officer of the foundation, Ms. Oyefunke Adeleke, thanked the founder for graciously approving the project, aimed at providing succor for the children, stressing that HOFOWEMs agenda was about happiness for the weak and vulnerable. She hinted that many programmes had been lined up for children and women in the new year and would be unveiled one after the other.

On behalf of the parents of the children, Mr. Emmanuel Stephen, expressed deep gratitude to the governors wife and the foundation, for what they described as the great act of kindness, praying that God would reward her most generously.

According to him, while government at all levels battle to contain the various challenges facing the country, the citizens should strive to live in peace, tolerate each other and sarifice for one another to provide the enabling environment for government to serve them optimally.

"We should eschew violence and desist from any action or utterances that can cause chaos and confusion or outright breakdown of law and order in the country.

Ambode releases 12 Kirikiri Prison inmates

...inmates have spent between thirty-four and twenty years in prison

...Says Justice Sector Reforms on course

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday released twelve inmates of the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in Apapa in furtherance of the law establishing the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

The inmates have spent between thirty-four and twenty years in prison and were released having satisfied basic conditions such as remorse, good behaviour and readiness to contribute meaningfully to the society.

Speaking while handing over the release order from the Governor to the Lagos Prisons Command, Chairman of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, Professor Oyelowo Oyewo said the release of the inmates was in line with the commitment of the present administration in the State to the ideals of the justice sector reforms through prison decongestion.

Oyewo, who represented Governor Ambode at the event alongside other members of the Council, said the exercise was pursuant to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) which empowered the Governor to exercise prerogative of mercy, and also to offer hope to such inmates who have demonstrated capacity to be re-absolved into the society.

According to Oyewo, a professor of law, "The Advisory Council On Prerogative of Mercy is established under the Laws of Lagos State pursuant to the powers of the Governor under the Constitution to exercise prerogative of mercy. The Council meets to consider applications for the exercise of prerogative of mercy that is forwarded through the Nigerian Prisons authority.

"Basically, in exercising this there are guidelines that are set and some of these include looking at the period that has been served by the inmates and for hard capital offences, such inmates must have served for a sufficient period of time and the reason is that the Council in the guidelines try to balance various interests such as that of the community, the family of the victims and also the interest of the administration of criminal justice and justice reform to ensure that prisoners are reformed and rehabilitated.

"It also include transformation in the life of the prisoner because there must be remorse and acknowledgment of the fact that something wrong had been done and then the prisoner must also have acquired some skills to show that he is ready to be rehabilitated into the society."

Aside that, Oyewo said the families of the released inmates, in accordance with the guidelines, were also made to guarantee that they would follow up on them to ensure that they don't go back to their old ways of crime.

While addressing other inmates at the prison, Oyewo admonished them not to be discouraged but be of good behaviour and repent from their sinful ways, saying that the State Governor was determined to release as many of them who meet the requirements for freedom.

He also said that a reform was being proposed to put a parole system in place to secure the database and monitor prisoners on prerogative of mercy after their release to guide against future crime and ensure they contribute positively to the society.

In his remarks, Controller of Prisons, Lagos Command, Mr Tunde Ladipo commended Governor Ambode for his commitment to justice sector reforms and prison decongestion, saying the release of the inmates had brought hope to to them.

He recalled the release of eighteen inmates in March by the Governor, adding that the development would go a long way in addressing prison congestion which had been a major issue in the administration of justice system in the country.

"It is my great pleasure and honour to receive the letter of release from the very hardworking Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode who has passion for God and development of this State.

"I call him the action Governor and off course Lagos has continued to be the number one State in Nigeria and so we are not surprised that this is coming from the State.

"On behalf of the Controller General of Prisons, we want to say a big thank you to the Governor for his commitment to do more for this State and for this prison," Ladipo said.

He also urged the Governor to come to the aid of Lagos Prisons Command in area of logistics, construction of security tower, procurement of CCTV cameras, among others.

Bolanle Ambode applauds prompt payment of retirement benefits

Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, has commended the State government for making the payment of retirement benefits a priority, just as she applauded the regular payment of workers’ salaries.

The First Lady, who gave the commendation today at the 46th retirement benefit bond certificate presentation to 286 retirees in Alausa, Ikeja noted that it took a focused and purpose-driven administration to prioritise the entitlements of workers, who spent the better parts of their lives in the service of the State government.

“With gratitude and immense appreciation, I commend the efforts of the Lagos State Government for rising to this important occasion of fixing the entitlements of these great citizens, who had spent the better parts of their lives in the service of the State,” she said.

Mrs. Ambode recalled that the 18th edition of the programme took place shortly after the inauguration of the current administration, noting that several bond certificate presentations had taken place since then, bringing the latest edition to the 46th.

She condoled with the families of retirees who had transited and urged the beneficiaries to pay good attention to their health and avoid frivolous spending.

In his address, the State Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pensions, Dr. Akintola Benson Oke, disclosed that in less than three years of the current administration, no less than 33 billion Naira, had been paid to more than 8,000 retirees as accrued pension rights.

Speaking earlier, the Director-General of the State Pension Commission, LASPEC, Mrs. Folashade Onanuga, noted that the Ambode’s administration gave first line charge treatment to pension contributions, adding that both employer and employee contributions were remitted into the retirement savings accounts of beneficiaries.

Drama As New PDP Faction Emerges

...Says Party is Overwhelmed With Impunity

Agege Pulse Magazine

Barely one month after all seems to be well with the PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY, PDP with the organisation of an elective convention that brought new National Executives into power, a new twist is now emerging.

Information reaching Agege Pulse Magazine  confirms that a new faction has emerged in the Peoples Democratic Party with a secretariat opened in Asokoro, Abuja.

At a press conference held today in Abuja, the  FRESH PDP group led by Emmanuel Nwosu said it is emerging due to imposition of a unity list on members on December 9 convention.

The new faction claimed the impunity that led to the ousted of the PDP in 2015 general election was still perpetrated in the December 9 convention whereby results of election was already seen while voting was still ongoing.

Ambode approves more technical colleges to tackle youth unemployment

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has approved the immediate establishment of additional three Technical Colleges for the State, increasing the number of Technical and Vocational Colleges from five to eight.

This was disclosed today by the Deputy Governor of the State, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule at the Year 2016 and 2017 graduation ceremony of the five Technical Colleges held at Agidingbi, Ikeja.

The Deputy Governor stated that the proposed new Technical Colleges, which would be sited at Alimosho, Ibeju and Badagry, would further help to train the youths and unemployed graduates in acquiring new skills and opportunities to help them create jobs and be self-reliant.

Adebule, who noted that technical and vocational skills are crucial to achieving self-reliance and sustainable economic growth under the present economic recession,  informed that the State government has invested heavily in the development of technical and vocational education in recognition of the role technical and vocational education plays in the provision of quality services and development.

“The fact remains that the best way by which we can help create employment opportunities, stimulate economic growth in our State and Nation and alleviate poverty is to equip our youths with skills by which they can use in creating jobs for themselves and become self-reliant”,  she averred.

While congratulating the 1, 324 graduating students from the five technical colleges, Adebule urged them to justify government's huge investment by maximizing the training they received to impact on good service delivery and economic fortune of the State.

The Deputy Governor, while justifying the reason for focusing on technical and vocational education as a strategy for economic growth, maintained that reliable findings indicated that Lagos State has the nation’s highest population of people less than 25 years of age at present, adding that by 2025, Lagos will be home to around 20% of the nation’s population aged 24 and below.
She explained further that the implication of the findings is that government must be ready to create jobs every year for the next two decades to prevent social unrest and youth restiveness.

Earlier in her welcome address, Chairman, Technical and Vocational Education Board, Mrs. Omolara Erogbogbo charged the new graduands to maximize the full advantage of technology in their various areas of specializations to render quality services to the people and create wealth.

Erogbogbo stated that the realisation of the importance of technical education to economic recovery made the State government invest heavily in the area, urging the graduating students to use their acquired knowledge and skills to bring positive changes to the economy of the State and the Nation.

The event was well attended by top government functionaries, parents and relatives of the graduands and members of the academic community.

LASTMA arrests five officials for extortion…20 dismissed for misconduct

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested five of its traffic officials for extorting motorists last week at various parts of the State.

The traffic officials were Bamidele Sheu, 48, Officer and resident of 68, Oke Popo Street, Lagos Island; Ope Adisa, 32, of 8, Freeman Street, Lagos Island and Babatunde Aluko, 37 of 15, Oriwu street, Ikorodu.

The trio was arrested following a complaint to the Agency by one Akinmolayan Babatunde, a clearing agent for the illegal apprehension of his container truck with number AA 553 NGW at Marina area of the Lagos Island and subsequently demanded N80,000 as a bribe before the vehicle could be released.

According to Akinmolayan, he was accompanying the container truck on Monday morning to deliver goods at Walter Carrington Street at Victoria Island, when the truck was forced to stop at Marina close to the State House by the three LASTMA officials in uniform working with some other men in mufti for driving the vehicle at unauthorised hours.

Akinmolayan said all pleas to allow the truck to go in order to meet up with delivery time fell on deaf ears as the traffic officials and these men in mufti engaged him in fisticuffs, and the vehicle was eventually taken to Olowu removal yard of the Agency on the Island, where they demanded the said sum before its release.

It took the intervention of the Zonal Head and payment of N7, 000 to the unidentified men in mufti before the vehicle was eventually released to Mr. Akinmolayan.

In the same vein, the duo of Jimoh Olaosebikan and Emmanuel Padonu were arrested during the week by surveillance unit and provost officials of the Agency at Okokomaiko and Mile 12 areas of the State respectively.

While Olaosebikan was arrested by men of LASTMA surveillance team unit at Okokomaiko along Lagos- Badagry expressway for illegally collecting a sum of N20,000 from a female motorist whom he alleged to have made an illegal u-turn at Okokomaiko.

According to the motorist, “all explanations that other vehicles have been turning there before failed to convince him and efforts to see his superior officers in their office were frustrated by him, only for him to collect the sum of N20,000 from me before their surveillance team emerged from nowhere to arrest him.”

Padonu, on his part, was picked up by Provost Officials for using men in mufti to collect money from commercial drivers at Mile 12 area of Kosofe Local Government of Lagos State on Wednesday morning.

The arrest was as a result of a tip-off from members of the public who informed the Agency that some traffic officials were conniving with men in mufti to arrest and collect money from commercial drivers in the area.

Speaking on the arrested officials, General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olawale Musa expressed dismay at the activities of unscrupulous elements within the Agency and assured that with the assistance of members of the public they will be eased off from the Agency to protect the good name of officers who work assiduously to ensure free flow of traffic in the State.

Musa expressed his appreciation to members of the public for alerting the Agency to the unscrupulous activities of these officials, just as he advised motorists to always report any LASTMA official found wanting on duty.

According to him, “LASTMA operates a cashless policy and motorists should not give money to any LASTMA official under any circumstance. Furthermore, LASTMA officials on duty are always in uniforms with names conspicuously displayed on the breast pockets and motorists should disregard anybody not in uniform claiming to be Agency officials".

He said such person in mufti should be reported to LASTMA or nearest law enforcement Agency, adding that any motorist dealing with the State traffic officials should feel free to demand his identity and name.

The LASTMA boss urged motorists to exhaust all avenues available to seek redress before approaching the media, as any officer found wanting on duty would be dealt with according to the service rules and regulations.

“I want to assure motorists that we have put everything in place to ensure free flow of traffic during the yuletide period and I want to implore motorists to imbibe the culture of voluntary compliance with traffic officials' directives, obey road signs and laws so that we can have seamless traffic during this yuletide period,” Musa said.

Exclusive: Lagos Education District One Holds 2017 Christmas Carol in Style

...Appreciates Gov. Ambode's Support For Education

It was praise and worship galore recently when staff of Lagos Education District One, Agege thronged Methodist Cathedral, Orile Road, Tabon Tabon, Agege, Lagos, to mark this year's Christmas Carol.

The carol cum musical concert tagged 'Oh Worship The King,' was excellently package to suit the purpose it was meant for as several soul lifting praise and worship hymns were rendered by students of the district.

There were lessons and readings from The Holy Bible in the Books of Genesis 3:1-12, Isaiah 9:1-7, Luke 2:8-14 and Mathew 2:2.

Speaking to Agege Pulse Magazine on the significance of the carol, the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of the district, Dr. Yinka Ayandele ably represented by the Director of Schools Administration, Mrs. A.A Ako  said the district had recorded enormous successes in both academics and co-curricula activities in 2017, hence the need to unequivocally express gratitude to God and Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode who made it possible.

"We are people of gratitude. We recognise the fact that Jesus Christ is the King of Kings who alone, deserves our praises, worships and appreciations distinctively. That is what informed the theme of this year's carol.

"2017 has been a wonderful year for all of us at Education District One in all ramifications. We witnessed improved academic performances and excellent outings in all the co-curricula competitions (state, national and international) we participated.

"We have come this far because Jesus Christ was the pillar behind us. Therefore,  He deserves all the praises, worships, appreciations and adorations. Also, like Oliver Twist, we used the Carol to solicit for greater heights, sound health, abundant wisdom and understanding needed to better the best of this year in 2018.

"In addition, we appreciate the Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode for the massive support towards the development of education in the state. Apart from the timely and improved welfare packages for teachers, the Governor gave everyone level playing ground to inject creativity into how the best outcomes can be achieved in the sector. This led to the academic improvement witnessed across the state since he came onboard. Indeed, we are grateful." Dr. Ayandele asserted.

On her message to staff and other stakeholders of EDDI, Dr. Ayandele urged them to remain diligent and committed towards discharging their duties adding that there's always a reward for excellence.

"We have to continue pushing and remain diligent in the course of discharging our duties. As the saying goes, 'winners don't quit, quitters don't win,' we will continue to strive for excellence that we are known for, in the coming years."

"As you can see that the carol songs and hymns were rendered by students of the district. It shows that no child is useless. Every child has a special talent deposited in him or her that needs to be tapped. We are happy that our resolve to discover and nurture inborn talents manifested on a day like this." Dr. Ayandele concluded.

Lagos Lines Up 100 Artiste For 2017 One Lagos Fiesta

…Olamide, Davido, KSA, Ayuba, Salawa Abeni, Others To Perform

...To be the biggest and the largest celebration in Nigeria

The Lagos State Government on Friday disclosed that over 100 artistes cutting across all genres would be performing at this year’s One Lagos Fiesta, its flagship yuletide revue scheduled to hold from December 24 till early hours of January 1, 2018.

Addressing journalists at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Aramide Giwanson, said the eight days non-stop Fiesta, which would hold in five different designated centres in Lagos simultaneously for eight days non-stop would consolidate on the success achieved last year.

She said this year’s edition would feature several A-list artistes, while several upcoming artists, dance group and cultural performances will combine to perform and thrill over 10 million Lagosians on daily basis for eight days.

Giwanson listed some of the A-list artists lined up for the Fiesta to include Olamide, Davido, King Sunny Ade, Adewale Ayuba, Salawa Abeni, Humble Smith, Small Doctor, Ras Kimono, Pasuma, Osupa, among others.

She said in line with the tradition, the event would hold across the five zones as it held last year including Ikeja (Agege Stadium), Badagry (Badagry Grammar School), Ikorodu (Ikorodu Town Hall), Lagos Island (Bar Beach) and Epe (Epe-Marina Beachfront), while the cross over night of December 31st into the New Year will hold at Eko Atlantic City.

“Tagged See, Feel and Explore Lagos, Lagos State Government with 2017 One Lagos Fiesta will round off and bid 2017 which has been a remarkable year of achievement farewell while a New Year is ushered in with arguably the biggest and the largest celebration in Nigeria with a record of 10million people in attendance”, Mrs Giwanson said.

The OLF, she said was specially designed to turn the five divisions of Lagos into a tourist destination for 8 days non-stop showcasing not less than 40 concerts all together across the city of Lagos while developing the local economy of these areas thereby making it self-sustaining during the festive period and after.

Lagos represent a diverse tribes and cultures of Nigeria with differences that typifies the philosophy behind the OLF which is the reason the administration of Mr Akinwunmi Ambode to position itself for project T.H.E.S.E. Tourism, Hospitality, Entertainment, Sports for Excellence to drive and harness tourism in Lagos State.

The Special Adviser added that the same template, content and performance for all the venues as obtained in the previous edition would be maintained with little addition to give this year’s event a better edge, while noting that the only addition will be a new program titled Temitiyin.

“Temitiyin is a program conceived to recognize, promote appreciate acts of kindness by Lagosian and so individual from all divisions of the State who have displayed random acts of kindness to their communities will be shortlisted and one person per division will be honoured as winners.

“Our talent hunt program will also be slightly adjusted to discover, celebrate and reward youths in the State in the areas of dance, music, comedy, and other creative exploit with auditioning to start Tuesday 19th December to Thursday 21 December in all five divisions of the State and two qualified finalist from all the designated divisions will compete at the OLF with winners carting away between 150,000 and 50,000.”, Giwanson said.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde assured that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure safety of lives and property throughout the course of the fiesta.

We’ll spare nothing to secure lives of 22 million Lagosians- Ambode

…Urges Companies To Install CCTV Cameras In Premises

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday said his administration will leave no stone unturned and continue to deploy more technologically advanced techniques and equipment to ensure that the safety of lives and property of 22 million residents in the State is secured.

Governor Ambode, who spoke at the 11th edition of the Town Hall Meeting on Security, organised by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) and held at the Banquet Hall, Lagos House in Ikeja in Alausa, said policing the State requires all and sundry to join hands with Government to ensure that the peace being enjoyed in the State is not compromised.

Alluding to the fact that criminal elements despite efforts by the Government have continue to perpetrate their nefarious activities but that his administration is prepared to do whatever it takes to make it exceedingly difficult for these criminals to succeed in their evil plots and in the event that they do, they are apprehended and brought to justice.

He therefore said that Government was investing heavily in technology equipment and strategies to aid security agencies carry out their primary function of policing the State efficiently.

“Technology can reach where man cannot. This is why your State has invested in mobile CCTV vans with control units, provision of drones, robotic bomb disposal equipment, tracker, bomb detectors, mobile scanners etc. The State has also commenced the installation of CCTV cameras and is in talks for the purchase of surveillance aircraft that carry special cameras with 3D imagery, infrared and thermal imagery which can effectively gather intelligence in all parts of the State and would assist significantly in dealing with the menace of kidnapping,” Governor Ambode said.

The Governor, however, seized the occasion to urge owners of businesses and organisations to install CCTV cameras in their premises to help expand the reach of law enforcement agents in the event of any security breach.

“We still need your continued support in providing equipment and logistics for the police and other security agencies through your contributions to the Lagos State Security Trust Fund.

“Be assured that the Lagos State Government is committed to rid our society of those that opt for crime. Our continued provision of equipment and logistics for the security agencies operating in Lagos is evident to this. Our government will also continue to provide state of the art infrastructure in order to achieve our vision of making Lagos a safe, prosperous and smart mega city,” he said.

Speaking on the plan by the Federal Government to demolish Jibowu and Costain bridges in Lagos, Governor Ambode said the development is necessary to give way for the new rail project which according to him, will be beneficial to the economy of the State and Nigeria as well.

“The Jibowu and Costain bridges will give way for the laying of tracks of a Lagos-Ibadan rail project. The demolition would give room for a track that would stretch from the old Fela Shrine to WAEC end and the track will be constructed in such a way that no vehicle can cross it,” Governor Ambode said.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police in the State, Mr Edgal Imohimi, said the introduction of community policing and the increase in police visibility had resulted in 35 per cent decline in crime in the State.

Imohimi, however, said that despite massive contributions by the State Security Trust Fund, dearth of patrol vehicles remained a challenge.

“Many vehicles attached to the divisions have become rickety and unserviceable due to old age and over usage,” he said.
Imohimi, however, said the command would not relent in its efforts to consolidate on the achievements recorded so far, but would appreciate if additional critical fighting equipment were provided saying that it would help to improve on the successes so far recorded in the command’s fight against crime and criminality.

Also speaking, Secretary of the LSSTF, Mr Abdulrazaq Balogun, said there was need for organisations to engage in consistent and sustainable security model, expressing optimism that it will go a long way to enhance strategic planning for improved security in the State.
