Govt Seals 40 Filling Stations Over Fraud

By Paul Mbagwu

The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment have sealed 40 petrol filling stations in Anambra for defrauding motorists.

Mrs Cordelia Nwachukwu, the Chief Legal Metrology Officer, Weights and Measures Department of the ministry made this known while addressing newsmen in Awka on Friday.

Nwachukwu said the audit and surveillance team which arrived Anambra on October 29, inspected about 100 outlets across the 21 council areas in the state.

She decried the short-changing of unsuspecting customers by marketers who use substandard petrol pumps.

“The marketers’ reasons of high running cost, evaporation, mechanical error and shortage in supply from tanker drivers are not acceptable.

“We have been here since one week on audit, and surveillance on oil and gas sector in Anambra.

“We inspected about 100 filling stations and about 40 of them were found wanting, what that means is that 40 per cent of filling stations here were shortchanging their customers.

“The 40 filling stations have been sealed and the owners invited for questioning,’’ she said.

Nwachukwu said some of the outdated equipment used by the marketers were also blacklisted and ordered outright removal.

She said the ministry would intensify the test and verification of weighing and measuring instruments used for trade in all sectors to ensure Nigerians got value for their money.

APC has no room for emperors Oshiomhole fires back at Okorocha, Amosun

…Says ‘’no to Okorocha political dynasty’’ …’’Amosun acts like medieval king’’
…Insists on fielding candidate in Zamfara

 By Omeiza Ajayi

The insistence of Imo State governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha and his Ogun State counterpart on fielding their choice candidates as governorship flagbearers in their respective states despite the position of the All Progressives Party, APC, finally met a brick wall yesterday with the party’s refusal to recognise their candidates.

Oshiohmole can’t be removed, not violated APC constitution – Tinubu APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole Specifically, the party’s decision practically dealt a mortal blow to the scheming and horse-trading over the determination of the governors to ensure that their candidates were given the tickets to contest governorship elections in Imo and Ogun states.

At the same time, the APC dismissed the decision of the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, barring it from having a governorship candidate in Zamfara State over the failure to meet the deadline for the submission of candidates’ names. The party said the stance of the electoral umpire was an act of disenfranchisement, aimed at awarding the governorship position in the state to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

These positions which seemed like the highpoints of the fallout of the party’s governorship primaries across the country were taken yesterday in Abuja.

Addressing newsmen to that effect, APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole said the party would not bend its rules for the personal interest of some party members. Oshiomhole, who spoke on the contentious outcomes of its primaries in Imo, Ogun, Rivers and Zamfara states, said the APC would abide by a Supreme Court judgment on Rivers State.

He added that measures would be put in place for fresh congresses across the state. The APC National Chairman specifically said Okorocha and Amosun were bent on fielding their choice aspirants at the expense of the party’s constitution.

The duo had recently accused Oshiomhole of being responsible for the crisis in the party.

RIVERS: We will abide by Supreme Court order His words: “On the judgment given by the Supreme Court, as a political party, we respect the judiciary.

We also appreciate that democracy is basically about the rule of law and not the rule of might.

Based on this fact, which is not a choice, we are obliged to respect the rule of law and at the heart of that is total obedience to the letters and the spirit of judicial findings which are not meant to be convenient.

In a democracy, there are orders that need to be obeyed. Therefore, the judgment of the Supreme Court is very clear that the court has nullified the ward congresses that were done by my predecessor in Rivers State and also nullified the state and local government congresses that were done in the state.

What is important is that as things stand, the highest court in the land has pronounced that those congresses did not meet the requirements of the law and are therefore not valid.

As a law-abiding party, we accept the decision of the court and we will call a meeting in no distant future of all the stakeholders in Rivers State to put the necessary machinery in place to conduct fresh ward, local government, and state congresses.

OGUN: Amosun behaving like an emperor “In the APC Constitution, the only body authorised to conduct primaries is the NWC of which I am privileged to be the chairman but there are processes that must be followed before this exercise is made a possibility.

Our National Executive Committee NEC met and decided to invoke the relevant parts of our constitution which among other things allow us to conduct either direct or indirect primaries in which every card-carrying member of our party is entitled to vote.

“In the case of Ogun state, Governor Ibikunle Amosun like any other governor convened a meeting of the State Executive Committee SEC as directed by NEC and those meetings were meant to include not just the SEC members but critical stakeholders for the purpose of primaries.

There can be no question that anyone who is standing for an election is obviously a stakeholder in the process particularly when the matter on the agenda is how to conduct the primaries.

And in order to ensure transparency in the process, the NEC also resolved that when a state opted for any of the options, the state executive is obliged to ensure that majority of the members sign the resolution and not just one or two on behalf of the others.

Substantial compliance “Amosun  convened a meeting that substantially met the requirements as resolved by the NEC.

I talk about substantial compliance because there were people who were supposed to be invited to that meeting but were not invited.

These include former senators, former governors or deputy governors.   At the meeting,  Amosun in his wisdom decided to introduce a third element which did not feature in the resolution of the NEC. He announced that Ogun State was going to adopt consensus and he proceeded to define what in his view constitutes a consensus.

Having defined it to mean the pronouncement of the governor, he went on to announce a consensus candidate, one Akinlade as the next governor. He proceeded to announce another gentleman as the running mate.

He went on to proclaim himself as the next senator and also said the current senator in his own zone, Sen Lanre Tejuosho, would step aside so that he, Amosun, at the end of his tenure would proceed  to the Senate.

He announced also that another senator from Ogun State would step aside and another gentleman would come in his place. Not done, Amosun went on to announce a particular gentleman as the next Speaker and another one as Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly.

Amosun also unilaterally pronounced that of the eight seating House of Representatives members, seven were not going to return.

He went on to list the names of the House of Assembly members who would seek re-election and those who would not seek re-election, announcing a total of 40 names.

When he was done  in a manner that an emperor would do to his subjects in a feudal society, the people of Ogun state at that meeting rejected the imposition.

Amosun did not recognise that democracy is a game of numbers, not a game of power. He went on angrily to announce that if they did not accept the imposition, he was going to do direct primaries which the people agreed.

Upon this decision, the SEC wrote to the NWC copying the office of the chairman to inform me.

Minimum Wage: BREAKING: COURT STOPS NLC, TUC’s PLANNED STRIKE- AgegePulse

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria has ordered the organised labour, comprising the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress not to embark on its indefinite strike scheduled to commence on November 6.

Justice Sanusi Kado, on Friday, gave the order in a ruling on an ex parte application moved on behalf of the Federal Government by the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. Dayo Apata.

Agreeing with Apata, Justice Kado ruled that if the strike is allowed it would lead to huge economic loss to both public and private institutions and could jeopardise the health of many Nigerians who would not be able to access health facilities during the period.

The organised labour had threatened to commence an indefinite strike action to press for the increase in the national minimum wage from the current N18,000.

The last meeting of the tripartite negotiation committee on the minimum wage had ended in deadlock after the Federal Government insisted that it could only afford to pay N25,000, while the governors under the aegis of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum had held on to N22,500 and the labour N30,000.

Apart from the NLC and the TUC, the NGF is also joined as a defendant in the suit.

Justice Kado adjourned the matter till November 8 for the hearing of the motion on notice seeking the interlocutory injunction to stop the strike.

The judge ordered that the court order and other papers be filed on all the defendants.

He ruled, “In view of all that I have been saying above, it is the overall interest of justice and stability of the society to grant the order of interim injunction against the 1st and 2nd defendants (NLC and TUC), their members, privies, agents, proxies, workmen, or servants from embarking on or taking part in the planned strike or industrial action scheduled to commence on November 6, 2018, in whatever form pending the hearing or determination of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction which is pending before the court.

“It is also necessary to grant an order of interim injunction restraining the 1st and 2nd defendants (NLC and TUC), their members, privies, agents, proxies, employees, workmen, or servants from engaging or taking part in any conduct or act in contemplation or furtherance of the strike or industrial action scheduled to commence on November 6, 2018, pending the hearing and determination5 of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction.”

The suit marked, NICN/ABJ/287/2018, was filed on November 1, 2018 in the name of the Federal Government and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami, as the 1st and 2nd claimants, respectively.

LASG set to empower graduates with technology skills

The Lagos State Government is set to empower graduates with cutting-edge technology skills that will give them a better advantage with employers of labour through the Oracle Development Training Program.

Speaking at a stakeholders meeting in Ikeja, the State Commissioner for Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, Pharmacist Akinbile-Yussuf stated that more than 100 graduates had applied for the programme but 50 were picked for the pilot scheme that will commence in the first week of November, 2018.

She added that the selected candidates will be going through three-week intensive and rigorous training on Oracle workforce development programme which is part of the curriculum from Oracle University that provides industry-certified training for graduates.

While noting that the target of the Ministry is to ensure that 95 per cent of the participants were gainfully employed by different organisations after the successful completion of the training, the Commissioner declared that some beneficiaries of previous employability skill-training programmes organised by the Ministry have been employed.

Akinbile-Yussuf, therefore, called on the private sector to send whatever their skill requirements for graduates are, saying the Ministry is ready to partner and tailor her employability training programmes to meet the needs sent in by the different organisations.

The strategic initiatives Manager of Oracle in Sub Saharan Africa, Mr. Adepegba Oduntan informed the gathering that the training was borne out of the desire to equip graduates with the right employability skills currently needed in the labour market.

He said his organisation is set to train graduates in line with the needs of employers, stressing that “This training will fill the skills deficit gap in Nigeria. We are training the graduates on the Oracle Database cloud up to certification level. In addition, the training will make the participants more valuable to employers of labour”.

On her part, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Ganiat Abidemi Raji implored the participants to maximise the opportunity inherent in the training programme in order to secure a bright future for themselves in the technology industry.

'I was caught because I didn’t pray, read bible’ – Robbery suspect confesses

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a group of armed robbers who snatched a vehicle and drove it to Benin Republic for sale.

The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer (ZPPRO), CSP Dolapo Badmos, while confirming the news to newsmen on Thursday, gave the suspects names as: Solomon Adeniji (27), Tosin Adeoye (25) and two nationals of Republic of Benin, Adewale Adebolaji (45) and Moyori Sule (42).

One of the suspects identified as John Godwin, while confessing, said the only reason he was caught was because he forgot to pray and read the bible, that if he had done so, he wouldn’t have been caught.

He said, ”I was once sent to Ibara Prison in Abeokuta for stealing something at a market in Abeokuta. It was in the prison that I came across Tosin. It was also Alhaji who sent my phone number to Solomon.

“My plan was not to go back to crime when I came back from prison.

”I did not have money to take care of myself that was why I went back.

”But later I told myself robbery is not best option for me because my parents told me when I was born a pastor prophesied that I would become a pastor.

”Fortunately, when I was in the prison I used to preach and pray with my colleagues. It is the devil that drove me to crime. .

“Whenever we are going on operation, I usually read Psalms 121.

”I believe reading the Psalms would give me protection throughout the operation period.

”On the fateful day I was arrested, I forgot to read the Psalms before leaving home. I believe God wanted the police to arrest me so as to quit robbery.”

The ZPPRO also said that they will charged to court when investigations are completed

Lagos Already Implementing Key Policies To Ensure Inclusion, Prosperity - Gov. Ambode

…Says Empowerment of All Groups, Key To Ending Extreme Poverty

…Delivers 75th Anniversary Lecture At Island Club

AgegePulse Magazine

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday said if Nigeria must get out of the woods, it must begin now to take concrete steps towards empowering every group in the society and give ears to their views and aspirations, saying it is only in such situation that the country can truly end extreme poverty.

Governor Ambode, who said this while delivering a paper to commemorate the 75th Anniversary Business Lecture of the Island Club, said Nigeria must aggressively pursue strong social inclusion policies in order to build a virile nation where every member of the society, regardless of their status or creed is catered for.

Speaking on the topic ‘Nation Building: Communities, Inclusion and Prosperity’, the Governor said presently there were various indices that present a worrying picture, stressing that the country must address it by taking actions that would change the narrative and engender prosperity.

“A sustainable path towards ending extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity also involves creating an inclusive society, not only in terms of economic welfare but also in terms of the voice and empowerment of all groups.

“We must begin to realise that every strata of the society counts, we must listen and accommodate all views, whether they are poor, whether they are Igbos, Hausas, whether they are Muslims or Christians. An inclusive society must have the institutions, structures and processes that empower local communities, professional associations, artisans, CDAs so they can hold government accountable.

“It also requires the participation of all groups in society, including traditionally marginalised groups such as ethnic minorities and indigenous populations in decision making processes,” he said.

Highlighting the Lagos example of inclusion and prosperity, Governor Ambode said his administration in the last three years, despite the population and migration challenges vis-a-vis pressure on physical and social infrastructure, has continued to carry out massive upgrade of its infrastructure, which according to him would have improve the lives of all residents and ultimately the economy.

“We believe that every Lagosian must have the opportunity to grow, develop their own skills and contribute to their families and communities in a meaningful way.

“If they are healthy, well educated and trained to enter the workforce and are able to make a decent wage, they are better equipped to meet their basic needs and be successful. Their families will also do well and the whole society will benefit. The aggregate sum of family well-being is the meat for nation building,” he said.

The Governor said that his administration has concentrated on creating an environment for investments to thrive, saying that deliberate steps were also taken to encourage the private sector to take the front seat and grow the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the State.

He listed development of Tourism, Hospitality, Arts, Sports and Entertainment sectors, development of an integrated and modern inter-modal transportation system, Employment Trust Fund, CodeLagos and Ready-Set-Work as some of the strategies evolved over the last three years that has recorded huge impact in the State’s economy.

“Our Employment Trust Fund has disbursed N5.84billion to 7, 880 Lagosians out of which 1,123 have fully repaid their loans. This is a revolving fund that targets inclusion and prosperity.

“Over 25,000 jobs were created through the loans and employability programmes and to ensure inclusion, 3,613 women recievedN2.29billion while N1.44billion was disbursed to individuals less than 35 years and at least N100million in each local government of the State,” Governor Ambode said.

“In terms of inclusion and prosperity, our vision to make Lagos safer and more prosperous is driven by the need to foster and build an inclusive society, a Lagos that works for all of us. This has been our primary focus in the last three and half years.

“This vision of making Lagos Africa’s model mega city and global economic and financial hub is reflected in everything that we have been doing, bringing our communities together to ensure the future prosperity of Lagos State is non negotiable. I am convinced that we are on the right trajectory and that’s the way to go if Lagos is going to show a very good example to the rest of the country,” he said.

Recommending the way forward, Governor Ambode said to ensure inclusion and evolve prosperous communities; social policy needs to move beyond conventional social service approaches towards development’s goals of equitable opportunity and social justice.

Expressing optimism that the Nigeria economy was showing positive indices of recovery and encouraging outlook for the future, the Governor, however, said economists had posited that for Nigeria to attain its potential, the economy needs to move at a growth rate of six to seven per cent per year as the population growth was above three per cent.

“To meet our growth ambition, we need jobs and we need to increase productivity too. Nigeria has the advantage of a large population, but the majority are under-skilled. It is imperative to equip workers with the skills needed to keep pace with an economy in transition like Nigeria,” he said.

“We need to close that in economic and political gap between women and men in this country. Providing both girls and boys with education is going to be our first step. Quality education is the basis for job and income, a modern competitive economy needs the best heads and hands regardless of gender. This is just sound economics and simple common sense.

“Government needs to implement structural reforms to enhance efficiency, making valued long term investment in technology and science to support research and development. In addition, government also needs to support the economy to provide jobs for their fast growing job population,” Governor Ambode said.

Earlier, Chairman of Island Club in his welcome address thanked Governor Ambode for his support to the Club since he assumed office, saying that he had not only followed the footsteps of his predecessors as Patron of the Club, but had on some occasions, moved a notch further than they did.

Also speaking, a former chairman of the Club, Chief Olumuyiwa Falomo lauded the Governor for his developmental strides in the last three and half years, assuring him that history would be kind to him.

“Only God knows the future, just carry on regardless, the reward of being very conscientious with what you do will come sooner than later and my prayer for you is that God will guide you and the sky will be your limit,” Falomo said.

Highlight of the lecture was the launch of the anniversary brochure and the commissioning of the car park project initiated by the club.

Adopt Students-centered Pedagogy To Teach Mathematics - Unilag Prof., Dr. Awofala Admonishes EDDI Teachers

...We'll Improve On Our 92% Performance Rate In Mathematics - TGPS, Dr. Yinka Ayandele

AgegePulse Magazine

The need for teachers especially Mathematics tutors to adopt students-centered teaching methods during Mathematics classes took the center stage at the 2018 Annual Seminar for Mathematics Teachers in Lagos Education District One comprising Agege, Alimosho, Ifako Ijaye respectfully.

Dr. Awofala, O.A, of the Department of Science & Technology, Faculty of Education, Unilag, Akoka, during his presentation tagged "Reinventing Mathematics Teaching Through Innovative Pedagogy," noted that most students fail Mathematics because teachers do not put the learning and real-life application of mathematical pedagogy as end products of teaching the subject in the classroom.

He charged mathematics teachers to be more logical in providing solutions to aspects of the subject that students find difficult, urging to be cerebral in approach while teaching mathematics.

"Most teachers put themselves at the center in class, bossing the process of teaching mathematics. This makes students learn the subject through fear and confusion. We must adopt "Leaner Centred Pedagogy rather than conventional 'Teachers Centred Pedagogy' if we want our students to see the importance of Mathematics application in their daily life activities."

"Apart from having mastery of the subject, teachers must have effective pedagogy to affect the three domains of the students learning process. This would afford teachers to identify the hidden potentials of students for effective learning." Dr Awofala advised.

He listed some time tested innovative pedagogy that Mathematics teachers could adopt for effective teaching of the subject. They include; Corporative Learning, Lessons Study Method, Problem Based Learning, Personalisation of discussion amongst others.

Dr Awofala continued: "Effective application of any of the pedagogy would foster students' conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, strategic competence, adaptive reasoning and productive disposition that helps students formulate problems and solve them.

The second presentation tagged "Achieving Education Promise by Leveraging Digital Technology" delivered by Mr Adeniyi Oluokun - Digital Microsoft Expert, was also an eye opener for the Mathematics teachers at the seminar.

Mr Adeniyi identified the known fact that Mathematics is an achill heel to many students but revealed that by using technology, educational video materials to buttress the conceptual teaching, students will find it rather easy to understand the topics being discussed.

In a well thought-out slide presentation, Adeniyi highlighted how today's students are technologically inclined. Hence, the need to use what they love doing to catch their attention rather than using their precious time online without impact.

Speaking at the event, the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of Education District 1, Dr. Yinka Ayandele appreciated the members of Mathematical Association of Nigeria for the concerted efforts geared towards successful teaching of Mathematics in EDDI.

Dr Ayandele revealed that EDDI is the only district organising annual seminar for Mathematics teachers in Lagos State, adding that the gathering alongside other creative measures introduced to address arithmetic phobia among students, endeared the district to achieve a 92% pass rate in the last West African Examination Council examination.

"EDDI had best result in Mathematics of the just concluded WAEC with a 92% pass rate. Today, we are moving away from just performance to application of mathematical knowledge in the day to day experiences of our students. We want our teachers to take the subject with great passion in order to ensure students develop natural interest in learning the subject Mathematics." Dr Ayandele assured.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Coordinator of MAN in EDDI, Mrs. A.B. Agunbiade stated that training the trainers has always been the objectives of the seminar since inception. She stressed that the annual event and is designed to expose teachers to latest methodologies aimed at providing tailored solutions to challenges facing mathematics teachers.

She said, "The peer mentoring program (PMP), Intra and Inter Zonal Mathematics competitions that was introduced by the TG/ PS, Dr. Yinka Ayandele who is the Architect of Mathematical success in the district, has given us the courage to combat war against poor performance in mathematics (WAPPIM) in our schools".

Agunbiade reeled out some of the association's achievements which include 5years university education scholarship by Touch_A_Life organization under Touch_A_Life maths/science competition won by Master Ezenuala Ekene Franklin of Meiran Community Senior Secondary School and Silver Medal Award at the KFS International Mathematics Award recently.

The program was capped with an Award ceremony to reward outstanding performance among students and teachers within the district.

What Tinubu said about Atiku, Oshiomhole after Wednesday’s meeting with Buhari

Bola Tinubu, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has dismissed the threat posed by Atiku Abubakar, who is the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

After meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, Tinubu was asked if he is jittery about the strategy meeting convened by Atiku in Dubai, to unseat Buhari.

“We don’t fear. Whether it is in the jungle, or it is in Dubai or it is in Abu Dhabi, people are free to meet and strategise in anyway they want but we are not going back to the illusion of the PDP.

“It is not possible, Nigerians will not do that. They say slow and steady wins the race. We inherited that from our forefathers and knowledgeable people. We can’t go back to the pit that we inherited for 16 years. They can strategise from anywhere but a leopard cannot change it skin,” he told State House correspondents.

He said the meeting with Buhari was about “the nation, the country, our people, peace, stability and economic progress”.

Asked if he was in support of the call for Adams Oshiomhole’s removal as APC national chairman, Tinubu said: “No. We all have to respect party supremacy. You were all here when we had the congress, we elected the new executives, the convention we had it, the NEC was formed and we surrendered to avoid conflict, to avoid domination, to avoid abuses of power, we surrendered our rights, all rights to the national working committee headed by Adams Oshiomhole.

“That the national working committee should set up electoral bodies to supervise various state congresses and elections. We signed for it. So, if it is not in our individual favour, so be it. We gave three options: consensus, where there is no consensus because if you are more than two or three and you cannot agree to one candidate, you go to the next level.

“The next level is the stakeholders’ delegate election and you have to be supervised by the national working committee of the party, national election committee of the party. That shows party supremacy.

“We had the freest option, the less cumbersome is to open direct primary, line up and count the number, 1,2,3. If you win, you win and if you fail, go home. Then appeal committee was set up to listen to all appeals, internal mechanism for conflict resolution. It was there, you cannot turn round against that, you cannot turn against all of that.

“No. Party is supreme, party must be respected, abuses will not do it and anger will not do it. It is party politics, somebody will win and somebody will lose… too bad

Gen Alkali: How Army recovered officer’s body from abandoned well

The remains of the missing Senior Army officer, Major General Idris Alkali(rtd) has been found by a team of the Nigerian Army on Search and Rescue Operation. This is coming after the officer had been declared missing since September 2018.

The remains of the officer was found in an abandoned well in a bush at Guchwet village in Shen Du District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The Garrison Commander 3 Division, Rukuba Barrack who also doubles as the Commander of the Search and Rescue Operation, Brigadier General Umar Mohammed, on Wednesday said one of the suspects who took part in the relocation of the corpse was declared wanted and voluntarily submitted self to the Police and led the Joint Team of Army and Police on Tuesday to the well site.

Mohammed said, “You know General Idris Alkali was declared missing on the 3rd of September, 2018, since after that, the Nigerian Army gave us 3 tasks, one was for us to find General Alkali dead or alive, two, to find his vehicle which was a Toyota Corolla, and number three, if anything happened to him, to find those who are responsible for anything that happened to him so that they can be prosecuted.

“On 29 September, 2019 we recovered his vehicle and his personal effects were seen, also a shallow grave was discovered in which General Alkali was initially buried.

“Some people were declared wanted, some have submitted themselves voluntarily and some people who took part in the relocation brought us to where he was relocated.

“And base on that, he was relocated to an abandoned well which is behind me.

“We came in this morning, we drained the water and we were able to salvage the body which is the remains of General Alkali. This means the first two aspects of the tasked have been accomplished”, he explained.

“The 3rd phase is the prosecution of all those who took part in this heinous act.

Jimi Agbaje warns that traffic may cripple Lagos economy

Mr Jimi Agbaje, the governorship candidate of the PDP in Lagos State, on Wednesday called for urgent national and State interventions in the gridlock crisis currently rocking the state.
Agbaje told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on phone that unless urgent measures were immediately taken, the state may be prone to total traffic collapse.

He said that this would be detrimental to the health and resources of residents and the state.

NAN reports that the severe gridlock in Lagos State has worsened in many parts of the state despite efforts by the state government to control the situation.

Worried by the situation, the police in Lagos had on Friday announced it was putting in place a special operation to restore sanity on the roads.

It said the operation, codenamed ‘Operation Velvet’, would see the deployment of policeman and other traffic management agencies at designated areas in the state.

Traffic, however, remained crippling in parts of the state on Wednesday, leaving commuters and motorists groaning.

Agbaje, who said his office is on the Apapa axis of the state, lamented that it had become almost impossible to access due to the gridlock.

“This issue is not a political matter because everyone is affected including state businesses.

“If nothing is not done to find urgent solution, it may cripple the state in terms of movement and commercial activities.

“The Yuletide is here. There is influx of people in and out of Lagos that has multiplied the traffic flow.

“Very soon, the campaigns will kick off. It will be an understatement to say that once the rallies start, there will complete breakdown in traffic flow,” he said.

Agbaje said that his investigations revealed that contractors handling some of the road rehabilitation and constructions across the State were no longer giving their best, just because they felt the incumbent governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, will not be returning for a second term, which was not a right attitude.

“Governance is a continuum. Road maintainable and contract jobs should not be put on hold because an incumbent will not be returning.

“Apart from the heavy duty vehicles parked randomly and carelessly accross most major roads in the state, potholes and the lack of seriousness by traffic authorities in the state add to the torture on the roads,”he said.

Agbaje therefore advised that the state should as first step enforce its initial directives on the heavy duty vehicles by clearing them from bridges and major roads in the state, which had become a permanent parking lot for them.

“Most of the potholes are created by these vehicles. The federal and state ministries of works should immediately begin a short term patching of the potholes, but at night, so it will not further affect the situation.

“ The state should set up a committee to monitor the activities of traffic officials taking advantage of the situation to enrich themselves rather than control the traffic,” he further advised.

He pointed out that if these measures were not put in place soon, the situation may continue to worsen.

Sports: Onazi Blasts Rohr

Trabzonspor midfielder Eddy Onazi was on another level in his team’s 1-1 draw against Antalyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig on Saturday, earning rave reviews for his performance at the Antalya Stadyumu.

Of the 28 players in action, the Nigeria international touched the ball the most, 111 times in total, placing first ahead of Argentinian teammate José Sosa who had 100 touches.

Out of the 92 passes Onazi attempted, he completed 72 and ended the game with a passing accuracy of 82.6 percent. But the most eye-catching stats is that he was the joint top dribbler, along with Antalyaspor’s Dogukan Sinik with four take-ons.

The 25-year-old, had a game-high five tackles, won two fouls and made one interception. In an obvious dig aimed at Gernot Rohr, Onazi criticized the German for not handing him playing time at this summer’s World Cup.

The relationship between master and pupil is set to further deteriorate as the former Lazio ace has been omitted from the latest Nigeria roster announced on Monday for no good reason. ‘’I’ll show my quality and talents to those who didn’t give me the chance to play in the World Cup,’’ Onazi told the Turkish press.

ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY KEY TO NIGERIA’S ECONOMIC GROWTH, OSINBAJO, AMBODE INSISTS

…As VP Holds Special Evening With Stakeholders In Lagos

Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday evening re-emphasised the importance of the entertainment industry to Nigeria’s economic growth, assuring that the sector would continue to enjoy support to maximize its potentials.

The duo spoke at an event organised for entertainers and tagged “An Evening with the Vice President” held at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island and was well attended by scores of entertainers including actors, comedians and musicians, among others.

Osinbajo reassured stakeholders in the entertainment industry of the Federal Government’s commitment to support them to enhance national growth and development, adding that they remain key players in the nation’s all round development and Government was not oblivious of it.

The Vice President said he had met frequently with entertainers with a view to developing policies around the industry for economy growth, revealing that the government decided to create Technology and Creativity Advisory Council to see how the government could move the industry forward through proper policies, especially on how to address the issue of piracy.

“No sensible politician can ignore entertainers; if you do, you do so at your own risk. Entertainers also cannot ignore politicians; it is impossible. If you do, you do so at your own peril.

“Already, there is a lot going on. Your industry has to respond to what is going on. This industry is important and crucial to our economy.

“We must set up the environment that will make it happen. No environment is completely ready; whatever it is that we have at the moment, we have to make the maximum use of it to grow this industry,” he said.

He said it was gratifying that some entertainers were already in politics and urged others to participate, in order to make a change and a difference.

“Your support is actually important. What we need to do is to sit together and solve the problem. The country is what it is today because some people stole the treasure,” he said.

In his remarks, Governor Ambode said the State had always been the hub for entertainers and would continue to support the industry to grow the State’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He also called for synergy between the Government and entertainers in order to create a convergence to grow the economy of not just the State, but also Nigeria.

“I just want to promise this time around that whatever it is that we have done as a government in the last three and half years, we have proven that the arts and entertainment industry can actually create a convergence with the culture of the city and then promote tourism using that convergence to grow the economy of Lagos and we have proven that.

“So, beyond our action there are other things that have to do with the framework, the things that have to do with copyright and access to capital to promote the entertainment industry and I hope that within the next one hour, we should be able to tell ourselves the truth on which way we can actually push this synergy to create that grows the GDP, not only of Lagos but the GDP of the whole country and we would be able to attract tourists to this country,” Governor Ambode said.

Also speaking, Sen. Goodwill Akpabio, who promised to support the industry as he had also been, assured the entertainers of government’s readiness to help them on issues of legislation.

Akpabio, who noted that the artistes were ambassadors of the country, urged them to promote Nigeria’s oneness.

Many of the artistes, who spoke at the event, identified the challenges in the industry as piracy, distribution of artistic works, poor power supply, lack of infrastructure, censorship, licensing, and access to credit facilities, among others.

The General Manager, LASBCA, Engineer Olalekan Shodeinde gave the warning today during a sensitisation meeting with stakeholders and residents of the community, stressing that a thorough engineering appraisal of such buildings have been done and statutory notices given to the owners.

He stated that one of such buildings prone to collapse is situated at Teslim Street, off Aka Road Ajangbadi in Ojo area of Lagos, noting that the partially collapsed building has long been identified by the Agency but in spite of several statutory seal-up and removal notices served to the owner since August 2017, the Landlord has refused to comply with the directive.

Alleged N400m fraud: Why Buhari wants to jail me, Metuh tells court

Gormer National Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, yesterday, narrated before the Federal High Court in Abuja why President Muhammadu Buhari wants to jail him.

Testifying as the 15th Defence Witness, DW-15, the erstwhile PDP spokesman, said his trial was a calculated attempt by All Progressives Congress, APC-led government to silence him from criticising President Buhari’s dictatorial tendencies.

He told the court that top APC members had prior to the time the EFCC arrested and subsequently charged him for fraud, tried to dissuade him from attacking President Buhari in the media.

Metuh told the court that some of the APC members met him on several occasions in Dubai, Switzerland and Paris to discuss possible roles they could play to strengthen the PDP to wrestle power from President Buhari.

He said the top APC members, who he did not disclose their identities, equally complained of President Buhari’s governance style, saying they had lost confidence in his administration.

Metuh said after he refused to soft-pedal on his criticisms, he started receiving warnings to be cautious of possible attack.

Lagos CP frowns at gang wars, cult activities sponsored by politicians

AgegePulse Magazine

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Imohimi Edgar, yesterday, vowed not to condone gang wars and cult related activities sponsored by politicians in the state.

He said this at a Town Hall Security Summit themed: ‘Towards a violent free 2018 elections’, held at  Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos. Edgar said: “The Command cannot allow cult groups to hold sway, hoping they will receive patronage from politicians.

Lagos is a cosmopolitan state and an elite environment, so there is no room for thuggery here.”

“I am calling on politicians to abide by the rules. INEC has made it clear that no form of campaign, either for Presidency or National Assembly, is allowed until November 18, 2018 , while that of governorship will commence on December 2, 2018. Political activities will not commence under any guise before the scheduled dates.

“Politicians should not go to public places and give money out. I am also advising that they should not give money out, because most of the troubles and killings that come up are usually because of money sharing.”

It is the fight over that money that usually leads to the loss of life. It doesn’t make any sense if a politician’s good gestures would lead to the loss of lives.”
