Reps bill to criminalise estimated power billing passes third reading

AgegePulse Magazine

A bill seeking to amend the Electric Power Reform Act, prohibit and criminalise estimated billing of consumers passed the third reading at the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The Majority Leader, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, sponsored the bill in protest against the 'crazy bills' being issued by electricity Distribution Companies to their subscribers.

The committee report on the bill, following a public hearing held on it on June 5, 2018, was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers.

Gbajabiamila had at the public hearing stated that there was nowhere in the world where electricity customers were billed arbitrarily as it obtains in Nigeria.

The lawmaker had further stated estimated billing could only be used in situations where the meter of the consumers could not be accessed by the service provider. He said DISCOs had however deemed estimated billing to be normal.

“Any regulation that allows estimation of bills when the actual consumption can be ascertained is against natural justice and equity and should not stand," Gbajabiamila had said.

The Majority Leader had also said the bill, when passed into law, would put an end to estimated billing and would become a win-win situation for both the consumers and the companies.

“The bill will ensure that prepaid meters are installed in all houses, so long as the customers apply for the meters,” he had said.

2019: BUHARI REMAINS THE BEST CHOICE FOR NIGERIA-Ambode

…Says Kaduna Mammoth Crowd Proof Of Nigerian’s Love For President

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday evening reiterated his position that President Muhammadu Buhari, who is flag-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 16 Presidential election, remains the best choice for Nigeria to move forward to the next level.

Cornered by journalists at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, venue of the Presidential rally, Governor Ambode said President Buhari in the last three and half years has set the nation on a trajectory of reviving its glory days, adding it was expedient for him to consolidate on the achievements with another term of four years.

“The choice before Nigerians is simple; to go back to the days of corruption, infrastructural decay and insecurity or continue with the trajectory of infrastructural development, steady anti-corruption war and the constant fight against territorial threats. This is what the Buhari and Osinbajo ticket represents.

“They have initiated social inclusion policies and constructed critical infrastructure across the federation which is gradually bringing back the nation’s economy in the right path and giving Nigerians a real sense of belonging. This is the way we want to go and Nigerians have shown that this is where they are going to go,” the Governor said.

He said the unprecedented crowd that thronged out to witness the APC Presidential rally in Kaduna was a testament to the fact that Nigerians are fully in support of President Buhari’s government and are going to go all out to renew his mandate come February 16, 2019.

“What we saw in Kaduna was unprecedented, just look at the crowd and the way they came out in droves. The passion, the trust and support that the Nigerian people have for Buhari is unrivalled and iconic. People just love Buhari; they trust him because he has performed well in the last three and half years, together with the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, they have delivered on their electoral promises and what is in the APC manifesto,” Governor Ambode said.

He urged supporters of the party to remain focused and not be distracted by the campaign of calumny the opposition parties have decided to harp on rather than focus on issues affecting Nigeria, saying that President Buhari has remained focus to deliver a new Nigeria that would take its rightful place among the comity of nations.

“We are not deterred by all the false narratives the opposition are spreading; we would rather focus on the issues and these issues are basically on how to make the life of Nigerians better. You can see for yourselves, the people have seen that President Buhari is a man of integrity that they can trust him and that is why it is important that he continues. He promised change which he has fulfilled and the next level is to consolidate on that change on the policies he has introduced and implemented,” the Governor said.

Incredible: How IKEDC Turned Agege Residents Into Money Making Machine

…Houses Get Astronomical 120% Monthly Bill

…They’re Rich Enough To Pay The Bill - IKEDC

The news of Nigeria’s power distribution companies dishing out astronomical power bills to consumers across the country cannot be overemphasized. Obviously, it is no longer news to the populace, as this singular action is synonymous with the discos, leaving Nigerians without prepaid power meter to pay through their noses for power they do not consume.

Since the privatization of the power sector, one of the beneficiaries, Ikeja Electric Distribution Company, IKEDC has always been alleged to be more interested in milking its consumers of their hard earned money without equating it with services expected of them.

According to credible information at our disposal, power consumers in Agege are not happy with IKEDC. It was gathered that the disco has intentionally decided to deprive the residents prepaid meter as being agitated for by the people who feel cheated on a monthly basis by IKEDC.

Agegepulse learnt that the residents of Adedosu Street, off Akilo Road, Agege were greeted with a New Year shock when they were served their December 2018 bill by the IKEDC. It was gathered that the bill came with the 120% increment trend that has been witnessed continuously for months despite constant complaints to IKEDC.

Accordingly to a resident of Adedosu Street who claimed anonymity, she said IKEDC have turned their street to money making machine, where the average monthly billing for each building of face me and face apartments is ranging from N25,000 to N50,000.00 respectively. (i.e single room pays N6,000-N7,000.00 monthly)

Though, she confirmed the relatively constant availability of power supply, yet she claimed that prepaid meter would help them to regulate the power usage through appropriate billing. She alleged that residents have constantly lodged complaints on this crazy billing to IKEDC but would not yield to their plight.

“We have always complained and requested for prepaid meter but the IKEDC have always turned dumb ear. We are very sure that they (IKEDC) are doing this intentionally to be reaping us of our hard earned money through skyrocket estimated billing”. She alleged.

Another resident who resides on the same street shared his own sad experience. He said; "I am occupying a 2-bedroom flat and I receive nothing less than N25,000 on a monthly estimated billing."I have invited them to my resident on several occasions to check if my electrical appliances would consume power to the tune of the N25,000 estimated bill they serve me monthly but they didn’t care how you feel about it.”

He also alleged the IKEDC of denying the street prepaid meter due to illegal estimated billing that increases about 120% monthly, sighting that neighbouring streets have received their prepaid meters months ago leaving Adedosu Street without prepaid meter because of the extortion by Ikeja Electric staff.

“Other members of the community and I have made several efforts to get prepaid meter from IKEDC but they declined our requests simply because of the corrupt practices they are perpetrating through the exorbitant and extorting estimated billing they are serving us monthly.” The concerned resident regretted.

“When we complained to IKEDC staff that come to disconnect peoples’ light about this extortion, their response was that we are rich enough to pay the bills. That is how serious the matter is.” Another resident alleged.

“The most pathetic part of the story here that, according to residents, staff of IKEDC hurriedly disconnect customers a week after serving them a bill irrespectively of reasons behind their inability to pay immediately.”

When Agegepulse contacted IKEDC to react to the allegations through their customer careline, we were told that the affected customers should get in touch with the Business Unit Department in Oregun, Alausa for review of the estimated billing.

Lagos State Government and other stakeholders to interfere in this corrupt practice from IKEDC before residents began to take laws into their own hands.

Agege Stadium, Secretariat Road Begs For Rehabilitation

Agege stadium road
Commuters plying the Pen Cinema en-route Stadium road to Ogba are beginning the New Year carrying over the burden they have endured in recent years.
While road users in other parts of Lagos are heaving a sigh of relief over the rehabilitation of some critical roads in their areas, it is a rough deal for the Pen Cinema/Stadium road users.
The road passing through the front of the Agege Local Government Area secretariat behind the magnificent Agege Stadium was once very smooth and the pride of the imposing secretariat, but it is today an eyesore of its former self.
FromPen Cinema, after the market, through the council secretariat behind the stadium and towards Ogba is a litany of potholes.
The immediate hardship to road users is that the journey that shouldn’t last five minutes takes nearly 30 minutes if the slow moving traffic is not held to a standstill. Mr. Adenekan Edun, a civil servant who resides in the area lamented the situation of the road, which he described as an eyesore.
“When we have a situation like this, we get baffled at what the government categorises as its priority. The surprising aspect of it is that the road passes in front of Agege Local Government Secretariat and one wonders if the council chairman does not pass the road at all. If not, something ought to have been done either as a palliative measure before the main rehabilitation is carried out.”
Reacting, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Ade Akinsanya, said the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) has intensified efforts to fix all potholes across the state and would soon get to the areas not yet touched.
“As I speak to you, the Public Works Corporation has intensified their rehabilitation of potholes across the state. We were initially held back by the rains, but with the dry season now, more roads have been covered in the last one month and we appeal to Lagosians to be patient, if you have not seen them in your area, they will get there soon.”

Revealed: K1 Publicist Narrates Why, How MC Oluomo Was Stabbed

...Says K1 Didn't Insult Gov Ambode

AgegePulse Magazine

The Publicist of Fuji maestro, Wasiu Ayinde Anifowoshe, Kunle Rasheed has narrated the events that led to the stabbing of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Lagos State Treasurer Musiliu Akinsanya (a.k.a MC Oluomo) during the rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Skypower Grounds, Ikeja Government Reservation Area (GRA) last Tuesday.

According to him, the crisis, which was purely union matter, started between NURTW State Auditor Adekunle Mustapha (Sego) and Idumota Chairman Azeez Lawal (a.k.a Kunle Poly) on K1’s stage.

He said: “Both of them (Mustapha and Lawal) had issues on K1’s stage and K1 waded into the matter. At a point, Mustapha left the stage. Not quite long. MC Oluomo came on stage and exchanged greetings with K1, NURTW State Chairman, Tajudeen Agbede. As at that time, the boys of Sego and Kunle Poly had started fighting on the ground. So, it was not safe for MC Oluomo to leave the stage until one of Kunle Poly’s boys came on stage and threatening to kill MC Oluomo with a dagger. Agbede slapped him three times and chased him away. K1 also joined him to chase him away from the stage. He later returned to the stage and stabbed MC Oluomo and one Abija. That was how it happened.”

According to him, if not for K1, the crisis would have been bigger than that as he repeatedly talking to both warring parties to douse the tension.

“I was on the stage with them. I was there all through. K1 tried his best to resolve the crisis between the NURTW leaders over the State Chairmanship tussle even before that rally. People should stop accusing K1 of not doing enough to resolve their crisis,” he said.

Rasheed denied that the musician abuse Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, which some said led the supporters of the governor to start the crisis.

According to him, the track people were referring to has nothing to do with Ambode.

“If you check the new album he made for (Babajide) Sanwo-Owu, that track is there. He has even sang the track long before the crisis started. The track is all about APC and the party’s governorship candidate,” he said.

On why K1 continue singing while Ambode was making his speech, Rasheed described it as normal practice.

“If you are at the APC Convention in Abuja, the instruction was that as soon as someone is introduced, K1 will sing. Same thing happened at the Skypower Grounds, K1 started singing when Governor Ambode handed the party’s flag to Sanwo-Olu and that has nothing to do with the crisis.

He didn’t abuse or insulted Governor Ambode as some are peddling,” he said.

Adamu has Served as the Commissioner Of Police in Enugu State and currently the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone Five, in Benin ,Edo State.

AIG Abubakar Adamu Mohammed is to take over from outgoing Inspector General Of Police Ibrahim Idris.

He was at one time a director of peacekeeping operations. He is a former police commissioner in Enugu and was an AIG in charge Zone 5.

Babatunde Gbadamosi: Four major solutions the Governorship aspirant has for Lagos' problems

We are still yet to get over the candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) Babatunde Gbadamosi’s profound speech at Saturday’s Lagos gubernatorial debate.

The debate was organized by The Platform, a civic discussion initiative of the Covenant Christian Centre and was moderated by British-Nigerian Christian broadcaster, Victor Oladokun.

In attendance: Mr Babatunde Gbadamosi who defected to ADP from PDP, the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the PDP candidate, Jimi Agbaje, and the candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Owolabi Salis.

Here are four major things he said:

1. He lamented that civil servants in the state are poorly paid and promised to review their salaries if elected.
“The first thing I am going to be looking at very quickly is public sector pay. What we pay as civil servants and what we demand from them – there is a massive gulf between the two.

“Our civil servants are very disgracefully paid, and we want them to deliver the 21st Century service to us in Lagos State. That is not going to happen at the sort of pay levels we are offering them right now. So, we are going to upgrade civil service pay very quickly.”

2. Second on Gbadamosi’s agenda is the traffic situation which has been a source of concern for Lagosians over the years.

“We are going to be looking at traffic – simultaneously, at the same time (with public sector pay). We are going to be looking at the traffic situation because we are spending too many man hours in traffic,” he said.

In his estimation, every Lagosian spends an average of six hours every day going to work and back.

“That has got to stop,” he said, adding, “We are going to introduce high volume, high-speed passenger ferries across Lagos.”

When asked about the inability of successive governments to solve the gridlock, especially in the Apapa axis of the state.
He said, “There are a number of ways to tackle this problem. The most obvious one is rail. Secondly, barges to lift containers from the actual wharfs and take them to lighter terminals all around Lagos, and, thirdly, devolution of powers. It’s time we started this discussion about devolution of power.”
According to Gbadamosi, the ports, being in Lagos and the level of revenue being lost as a result of the gridlock is unconscionable.

“I’m not having it,” he said. “So, the first thing we are going to do is to copy the Ethiopians and build a heavy rail line, the length of Lagos State – all the way from Badagry to Ode Omi with branches going up to every exit point by road of Lagos.

“The point with this is that all of these exit points must have container terminals where the trains will pass through Apapa and Ibafo will deposit their goods so that people coming from out of state, which is quite common, will not clog up the roads with their trailers.”

Beyond this, Gbadamosi said Apapa, which is worst hit by traffic in the state is one of eight local governments that are captured under his Lagos Integrated Regeneration Plan.

“We are going to be pouring the money that AlphaBeta is currently taking to make sure that we regenerate that,” he said.

The ADP candidate had earlier identified traffic as a priority for him should he get into office and he intends to immediately tackle it simultaneously with the pay of public servants – his top priority.

“We are going to be looking at traffic – simultaneously, at the same time (with public sector pay). We are going to be looking at the traffic situation because we are spending too many man hours in traffic,” he said.
In his estimation, every Lagosian spends an average of six hours every day going to work and back.

Part of his plans to tackle the issue is water transport.
“We are going to introduce high volume, high-speed passenger ferries across Lagos,” he said.
3. Beyond the two issues, Gbadamosi explained that power was critical to everything.

“Thirdly, we’ll be looking at power because without power, we can do nothing. When God wanted to create the earth, he started with light. He said, ‘Let there be light’ and light was and then everything else came after,” the ADP candidate said.

To fix the problem, he promised that if elected, his administration would “put light in a minimum eight local governments within 18 months as part of our Lagos Integrated Regeneration Plan, an emergency plan that we will put together”.

4. On housing plans, he said “As of today in major cities across the country especially Abuja and Lagos , cost of housing and rents remains very high which has left most families feeding from hand to mouth after paying very high amounts for rent.

“We had massive housing projects in the past. The late President Shehu Shagari estates, former Lagos State governor Lateef Jakande estates have remained referral points in Nigeria in terms of housing.

“These feats are not unachievable if governments make housing a priority and target the downtrodden in Nigeria.

“Building estates that are not affordable for average workers in Nigeria only puts the rich in control of housing and making provision of shelter which is one of the major functions of a government, to be inaccessible to majority of Nigerians,” the ADP candidate said.

He said that rather than political sentiments, Nigerians should begin to align with candidates that could provide their basic needs which included housing. “Twenty five years ago, Alhaji Lateef Jakande built 20,000 affordable housing units in four years and three months in this same Lagos State. There has been massive improvement in construction technology over the years.

“Taking advantage of this, no government can justify its inability to provide massive housing projects for its people.

“Only when the people use their initiative to decide on what they truly need and focus on enforcing them will Nigeria and its states begin to grow in line with the people’s desires. He said that the ADP has housing as one its cardinal policies and that if elected in Lagos State, his administration would provide 10, 000 housing units annually and at least 40, 000 houses for residents within four years

Church Usher Rapes 5-Year-Old Girl In Lagos During Service

AgegePulse Magazine

The police at MAN Centre Division led by CSP Tanaruno Folashade have arrested a church worker of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (Redemption Pavilion), one Saviour Udoh, for engaging a 5-year old daughter of one of their members in a sex romp during service in Lagos.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church located at 19, Oshifila Street, Anifowoshe in Ikeja, Lagos where the mother of the victim took her for prayer and protection.

It was gathered that the mother of the victim took her to the church and went to work with the intention that she will be safe there before she will take her back home. However, when the mother came to pick the victim, she met Udoh with the victim where they were sleeping and covered themselves with clothes which they used during the romp.

When the mother took the 5-year old victim home, she was busy putting her hand inside her private part because of the sperm drifting from it. The mother then suspected her action and checked her private part only to discover that she had been defiled. She asked her who did it and the victim mentioned Udoh.

The matter was reported to the MAN Centre Police Station and Udoh was arrested. The matter was later transferred to the Gender Section of the State Command for further investigations.

Police source said that Udoh admitted but claimed that it was the devil that pushed him to do so inside the church. The police found him culpable and charged him before Ogba Magistrates Court for defilement.

The court did not take his plea and did not grant him bail. The prosecutor, Supol E Ayorinde, informed the court that it was a case of defilement which was a capital offence and needed DPP advice.

Thus, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. B.O .Osunsanmi, ordered him to be remanded in prison without an option of bail.

The court also directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send to DPP for advice.

The matter was adjourned till 6th February, 2019, when the court expected the DPP report to be available.

However, the matter may be transferred to the High Court if the DPP finds him culpable for the alleged offence. He may spend many years in prison if he is tried and found guilty by the court because of the nature of the offence.
