SANWO-OLU HONOURS COVID19 FRONTLINE HEALTH WORKERS AS HE COMMEMORATES HIS ADMINISTRATION’S FIRST ANNIVERSARY

As part of part of activities marking his first year in office, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu today honoured ten frontline health workers who have distinguished themselves in the service of State especially during the on-going war against COVID19 pandemic.

Amongst those honoured are;Prof Sunday Omilabu, aninternationally renowned virologist, Principal Investigator at the Lagos State Biobank and Director, Centre for Human and Zoonotic Virology, College of Medicine University of Lagos;Dr Sunday Adesola, a Principal Medical Officer, who has contributed immensely to case management of COVID 19 at the Isolation Centre of Mainland Hospital Yaba and deployed to head the Onikan Isolation Centre and Mrs Basirat Adeoye, the Apex Nurse at Mainland Hospital Yaba,

Others are, Mr. Folarin Amosun, a pharmacist from Lagos State Ministry of Health who hasdemonstrated immense logistics skills in managing the COVID 19 stores and ensuring an uninterrupted supply chain;Mr Olufemi Akinade, a  hygienist/medical waste cleaner; Dr Bisola Adebayo,  a Consultant Public Health & Community Medicine Physician and Lecturer at LASUTH/LASUCOM who has been coordinating contact tracing, case investigation and active case search; Mr Olanrewaju Aladetuyi, a  laboratory scientist, known to carry out highest manual extraction of samples (250) as part of RT-PCR for COVID 19;Mrs Abiola Aduloju,  the administrator of Mainland Hospital Yaba; Mr Alaba Anago, an ambulance driver  and Mr Tajudeen Bankole, one of the gateman/security officer at the  Mainland Hospital Yaba.

In his remarks before the presentation of award plaques to the health workers, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the government of Lagos will not wait till the eradication of COVID-19 before acknowledging the effort and contribution of the health workers who he described as unsung heroes battling the global pandemic on behalf of other citizens. He noted that the last one hundred days would have been chaotic if not for the dedication and sacrifices made by the health workers.

“The ten of you here today are by no means the only people deserving of the honour but this is just a show of our appreciation for the effort you have put in so far. We are not out of it yet, but as we go along, they say delay is denial; we certainly cannot wait till it is over before we begin to acknowledge our own (frontline health workers). That is why we are excited that your principals looked around and picked you for this honours”.

He added that the ten awardees stand in gap for other cadre of health workers at the frontline at the primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities as well as the isolation centres across the State noting that all of them are deserving of “our appreciation and commendation”. Sanwo-Olu noted that the dedication of the health workers has increased their workload especially at a difficult and trying time such as this.

Governor Sanwo-Olu admitted that though more needed to be done to revive the economy, he gave an assurance that the lessons being learnt from the pandemic would be employed in developing the State post COVID19

“It is not only about COVID19, this is about the whole health structure, about what we need to do and what we can learn from the COVID19 pandemic and beyond”, he said

Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi noted that a ceremony to honour health workers in commemoration of the first anniversary of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration is commendable and a morale booster for State health fraternity.

He stated that the Governor has once again demonstrated exemplary leadership as the Incident Commander of the COVID19 battle in Lagos and as a team player who appreciates the efforts of other team members to achieve the desired result.

Abayomi added that the Governor has demonstrated his leadership skills by leading from the fore front, visiting intervention and treatment sites and supporting all the noble initiative of the Incident Command System.

“While we are recognizing the front line health workers, I think it is important for us to establish that Mr. Governor himself is a chief frontline health worker. We really appreciate the role you have been playing. You have been in the front line and the battle field in so many ways; you have visited all the sites, you have been active and you have been exposed, these are true attributes of leaders that lead from the front”, he noted.

Children's Day : Lagos Education District 1 Agege, Celebrates Outstanding Scholars

The Tutor-General/ Permanent Secretary, Education District 1, Barrister Margaret Titilayo Solarin has presented gift items to some outstanding students that have distinguished themselves and excelled in both academics and Co-Curricular activities in the District.

She seized the opportunity of the Children's Day  to honour about 30 students  who had at different times participated in sporting activities, debate, drama etc including those that made the District proud and the state at the year 2020 Maltina School Games among others.

 The TG/PS led some officials of the District including school Principals and some administrators to the various residences of the students to present the gift items to them.

 She said that though the gesture may not equate the efforts and dedication of the students, Barrister Solarin averred that the initiative was intended to spur other students to aim for excellence by making their parents, school and the State proud of their performances.

 "The District deliberately decided to  appreciate these scholars on an ocassion marking the Children's Day celebration and to show these ones as shinning examples worthy of emulation."

  Some of the students who were honoured in company of their parents are: Renner Ayomide from Keke Senior High School, Ifako-Ijaiye, Kikelomo Yusuf and Babatunde Yusuf from Abibatu Mogaji Millennium Senior Secondary School amongst others

The TGPS congratulated the students and appreciated their various achievements in both academic performance and sports.

She admonished them to continue to study and work harder, especially in making an excellent use of the opportunities provided by the state government in the area of online teaching via television and radio.

Barrister Solarin seized the opportunity to thank the parents of the students and called on other students to emulate the outstanding performances of those honoured just as she admonished those honoured not to relent  but continue to aim higher for greater accomplishments.

She assured the students that the state government has a reward system in place to recognize and appreciate exceptional performances which sometimes could be in form of scholarship.

The TGPS expressed appreciation to the Governor, Babajide Sanwo - Olu for providing enabling environment and the wherewithal for continuous improvement and educational development in the state.

 "Let me also appreciate all the education stakeholders for their lofty contributions and efforts in getting the best out of the students. I will advise you to continue to unleash your potentials for the betterment of the state, nation and the world at large." Barrister Solarin pleaded.

Amuwo, Badagry, Others To Benefit From Lagos COVID-19 Cash Transfer For Residents

The Lagos government has approved the establishment of the State Cash Transfer Unit (SCTU) for the National Cash Transfer programme.

The State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs. Yetunde Arobieke who disclosed this Thursday in Lagos while rendering the account of activities of her ministry within the last one year to commemorate the first year anniversary of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration said in a matter of weeks, the payment of the beneficiaries cleared in the first phase of the programme in the State’s Social Register (SU) would commences.

She said 8,147 cleared beneficiaries from the SU of poor and vulnerable households are from six local government areas and 40 wards.



She said they will pay the conditional cash transfer of N5, 000. The amount is per household monthly in the first phase.

The cleared beneficiaries are from Amuwo Odofin, Apapa, Badagry, Epe, Ibeju Lekki and Lagos Island.

She added that the mapping activity to capture all the poor and vulnerable households in other local government areas is ongoing and these households will be covered as soon as their data is made Ava by the State Operation Coordinating Unit.

To ensure enrollment of beneficiaries, she said the ministry in collaboration with the National Cash Transfer Office, Abuja had organised training for cash transfer facilitators from various local government areas in the state on data and biometric capturing.

Also, Mrs. Arobieke said the government is establishing industrial hub to boost jobs in skill development and entrepreneurship, adding it is intended help the youths to get more employment opportunities.



She explained that the industrial hubs will target clusters in leather, wood and fish preservation with the intention to promote production of finished good.

Apart this, she said the government is planning a robust artisans virtual database.

in swift response to reports on a distressed 2 (two) storey building located at Olaosun close, by Abati Barracks, off Western Avenue in Surulere axis of Lagos, LASEMA Response Team in collaboration with officials from the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, conducted a controlled demolition of the defective structure after due diligence, outcome of several tests and approval by the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Physical Planning.

The said 2 storey residential building which tenants were evacuated earlier today by the Agency’s and LASBCA officials, aside results of exhaustive tests, had shown visible cracks, distress signs and several other defects which led to the distress calls that generated it's indept investigation by concerned government agencies and it's subsequent demolition to ensure it no longer constituted threats to lives of  occupants and surrounding properties before it was completely brought down at 4:24p.m today.

According to Preliminary Report emanating from the LASEMA DG/CEO, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu on the Distressed Building situated on Olaosun close by the Abati Barracks off Western Avenue, Surulere which states that, "The agency received reports concerning a distressed 2 storey building at the above mentioned address.

"A joint response team comprising the Agency’s officials, LASBCA personnel and Ministry Of Physica Planningl personnel, observed that a residential building was showing visible cracks and defects.

"The occupants of the building  have been evacuated by the Agency’s officials. The building has subsequently failed the integrity testing and is undergoing a controlled demolition with LASEMA heavy duty equipment, with a go-ahead from the Honorable Commissioner, Ministry of Physical Planning.

Members of the public are urged to take necessary corrective action on their properties to safeguard property and lives from inclement weather conditions especially as the State’s resources are committed to battling the COVID-19 pandemic".

Covid19: No More Lockdown In Ogun Except Weekends, Says Dapo Abiodun

The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has eased lockdown in the state except on weekends.

The Governor stated this on Thursday evening while addressing newsmen on the update of COVID-19 held at his Oke-Mosan office.

Abiodun said henceforth, there would not be restriction of movement between Mondays and Fridays except on Saturdays and Sundays.

He added that the Federal Government’s order on curfew which begins between 8:pm and ends 6:am daily is still in place.

He also said the ban on interstate travelling and religious activities is also still in force.

Abiodun said the state recorded 59 new positive cases, an increase of 32 per cent , bringing the total number of positive cases to date to 242.

The Governor said, “This second phase has two major elements of further relaxation of the restrictions and expansion in the number of days.

“In contrast to the current three days of Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, this new phase opens up all the five working days in the week i.e Monday to Friday, with only Saturday and Sunday as lockdown days.

“In addition, there will be no time restriction from Monday to Friday, with the exception of the curfew period from 8.00 pm or as may be directed by the President.

“Let no one make a mistake. COVID- 19 is neither over nor the curve of the spread flattened. From all available data and simulations, we are yet to reach our peak. Consequently, the further easing of the lockdown is not a license to believe the worst is over.

“For the avoidance of doubt, all the existing guidelines to combat COVID-19 in the state remain in place. In addition, specific guidelines to guide the operations of industries have been issued and must be fully complied with by all industries, as part of preparations for full operations.

“The curfew from 8.00pm to 6.00am as directed by the President is still in place.

“Restrictions on Interstate travel are also retained. Wearing face masks in the public is still mandatory. Only one passenger is still allowed for motorcycles, otherwise known as okadas, whilst tricycles are limited to two passengers only.”

The Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu on Thursday has promised that his administration will build affordable and accessible houses for Lagosians.

The commissioning came less than 24 hours to the first year anniversary of his administration.

Speaking at the official commissioning of two different estates in the Ikate Elegushi and Lekki area of the state, Sanwo-Olu said his Government is positioned to bring about even development to every part of the State, with a view to making Lagos achieve the 21st Century economy.

Sanwo-Olu noted that the project is a manifestation of his administration's much-touted need for public-private partnerships, which he said would be encouraged in all sectors of Governance to bring rapid growth and mutual benefits to all parties.

He said: "We need to continue to genuinely think through affordable housing, and that is our commitment for our people, because it's not everybody that will have the ability to pay for housing estates such as this. Therefore, we must give them opportunities for installmental payment, so as to make it affordable and accessible for them.

"I inherited this amongst several other projects and the critical challenge we had to contend with was lack of funds. To surmount this challenge, we had to look towards the private sector and adopted the public-private partnership (PPP) model. It was then that we were able to mobilize the needed funds and put life back to the construction site.

"The Lekki Apartment is thus another manifestation of the possibilities attainable when the public and private sectors come together to pursue a mutually beneficial goal. This cooperation remains a veritable means of meeting the shortfall in the supply of public utilities and social infrastructure", he stressed.

Urging the new allottees of the estate to put the facilities to proper use and comform to laid down rules for appreciation of value, Mr Sanwo-Olu congratulated them as he equally commended the Ministry of Housing, Lagos State Development Property Corporation and the private developers in making this a success in one year of his administration.

Earlier in his address, the Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai praised the foresight and confidence of Governor Sanwo-Olu on the success of the project noting that he left no one in doubt of his commitment to providing affordable houses for Lagosians.

He said the project which started six years ago but witnessed some delay during the past administration got an immediate boost from Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu who provided all that was needed to make today's Commissioning a reality immediately he assumed office.

Akinderu-Fatai expressed optimism that the current administration in Lagos State will ensure that housing need becomes a success story.

According to him, "It is worthy of mention that the project started in 2014 but thereafter got stuck due to some challenges. It would not have been completed if not for the ingenuity and determination of our very able Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.

" When Mr. Sanwo-Olu resumed as MD/ CEO of LSDPC in 2016, he immediately set about putting into motion the financial engineering and design modification required to complete this estate. Today's event is actually to the credit of Mr. Governor who ensured that all the hurdles to the completion were surmounted.

"We thank our able Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for not only the initiative of completing this Estate but also for the entire transformation of Lagos State. Certainly as we work together, the vision of the Greater Lagos as envisaged in the T. H. E. M. E. S. Agenda will be effectively achieved", he said.

CHILD MURDER: Lagos Magistrate Court sends Mother for Psychiatric Evaluation

Lagos State Magistrate Court, Igbosere, Lagos Island, on Wednesday, directed that a 22-year old mother, Olufunmilola Adisa, accused of killing her 21-month old daughter, Oluwanifemi, by drowning her in a bucket of water be sent to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Psychiatric department for evaluation.

Delivering her ruling on the alleged murder case, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Dora Ojo, granted the application of the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender (OPD) representing the defendant, saying that based on section 217 (3) of Lagos State Administration of the Criminal of Justice Law of 2015, the defendant should be sent and remanded at the Teaching Hospital for the necessary psychiatric test in order to determine her state of mental health.

Speaking on the case, the Director, OPD, Dr. Babajide Martins said that the Office, acting in line with its statutory responsibility of providing free legal service for the indigent and vulnerable, took up the case to represent the accused and requested a psychiatric evaluation of the defendant in view of her alleged crime.

He said, "based on the recent ruling and the granting of our application, the Agency will ensure that she commences treatment as an out-patient at the hospital pending further arraignment before the Law Court."

According to him, “Although, the case has been adjourned to the 26th of June, 2020 for the outcome of the Psychiatric examination to be conducted on the defendant, the OPD would do everything within the legal framework to defend the accused in line with the mandate of the Agency”.

The Director, therefore, urged members of the public not to cast judgement on anyone until the person is convicted by the Court, stressing that the Office is still operating within the directive of the State government that rights of the vulnerable are well taken care of, irrespective of their socio-economic background or crime committed.

Recall that the defendant was, on the 11th of May, 2020, arrested after being alleged to have killed her 21 month-old daughter, Oluwanifemi by drowning her in a bucket of water at their residence in Gowon Estate, Alimosho Local Government Area of the State.

How Lagos Police Intercepted Dismissed Soldier, Other Smuggling 1,200kg Indian Hemp

It was the end of the road for a dismissed soldier and his accomplice who must have been parading themselves as uniform men after operative of Lagos State Police Command apprehended two of them for being in possession of about 1,200kg of Indian hemp and hard drugs.


The suspects, a dismissed soldier, identified as Okoliko Andrew, and his partner, Idowu Adebayo, were intercepted with vehicles in which they were conveying loaded substances suspected to be Indian hemp before they were intercepted around Itowolo towards Ikorodu area of the state.


The two men who were said to have been initially stopped for plying Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) corridor around Itowolo, an offense which contravenes the state traffic laws. The state had prohibited motorists from plying the BRT corridors.


However, the Guild gathered that upon further interrogation by the police operatives attached to the state’s Task Force team, the suspects who were parading themselves as uniformed men ran out of luck after it was discovered that they were smuggling substances.


An eyewitness disclosed that the suspects initially stopped by the Taskforce team for plying BRT corridor tried but that they could not bail themselves out of the trouble.


“But trouble started when they failed to properly identify themselves as they had earlier claimed during initial interrogation. So, acting with on spot intelligence, the task force team stopped them and upon further interrogation, they discovered they were carrying banned substances which led to their arrest,” he said.


While confirming the arrest, another source from the task force team, who does not want his name in print because he was not authorized to speak to newsmen, said the police seized 24 bags of 50kg of Indian hemp and also recovered other outlawed drugs from the suspects.


The source disclosed that the suspects who met their waterloo were intercepted driving two vehicles which were Toyota Corolla with registration number CE APP 903FR and a Peugeot 307 with registration CB 686 ABJ, and were said to be living at No. 1, Pedro Compound, Charley Boy, area of the state.


The source added that the arrested suspects claimed they were to deliver the bags of Indian hemp to someone at Sura Market at Lagos Island and that the owner of the banned substances promised to pay them N50,000 after delivering the substances.


However, efforts to reach the Chairman of Lagos Taskforce, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, and the agency’s Head of Public Affairs Unit, Adebayo Taofiq, proved abortive as repeated calls to their lines were no connecting.


Also, as at the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, was not available to confirm the arrests or respond to our correspondent’s inquiries.

Lagos to deliver Pen Cinema Bridge November

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said it will complete and deliver the Pen Cinema Bridge by November, 2020.


Special Adviser to the Governor on Works and Infrastructure, Mrs Aramide Adeyoye, made this known while rendering account of the activities of the Ministry in the last one year.

“The construction of Pen Cinema flyover and access roads in Agege, currently at over 50% stage of work is scheduled for completion in November this year 2020.

“On completion the flyover is expected to resolve the perennial traffic gridlock in Agege and its environs,” she said.

Adeyoye listed works carried out by the Ministry during the period under review to include continuation of projects embarked upon by the immediate past administration such as the Agric-Isawo road, Igbogbo-Igbe road, completion of 31 network of roads in Ojokoro LCDA, network of roads in Badagry and Alimosho Council areas as well as maintenance of existing Infrastructure across the State

She said the administration had also embarked on new projects, including the Ijede road, the 10km 3-lane Lekki regional road and the 4th Mainland road.

Adeyoye pointed out that most of the new projects embarked upon were in tandem with the THEMES agenda of the current administration and also in line with the Lagos strategic development master plan.

On the Multi-level Facility (Car Park) in Onikan, the special adviser said the facility designed to accommodate 384 cars is a six floors edifice with offices and two banquet rooms.

“It has an auditorium sitting 800 guest complete with Elevator, Fire Alarm system, Cctv and a mini grid Solar Power system. The project is currently at 83% completion,” she added.

On the proposed 4th Mainland Bridge, Adeyoye said the bridge project had been in the pipe-works for about 20 years and intended to provide a useful additional link between the Lagos Mainland [Ikorodu] and the Eti-Osa corridor.

She said the proposed construction of the bridge was in consonance with State Transport Master Plan (STMP) and the EtiOsa/Ikorodu Master Plan, with the adoption of Public Private Partnerships (PPP) as the procurement model.

“The project procurement process has commenced with the successful completion of the Expression of Interest (EoI) Stage, which had 52 proponents/Bidders show interest and 32 compliant responses. The Request for Qualification (RFQ) stage is nearing completion, and this is expected to lead to the next stage, which is “Request for Proposal” (RFP) stage,” she stated.

May Allah accept all our sacrifices during the fasting period as an act of Ibadah and reward us abundantly.

Importantly, it's my prayer that God in His benevolence will help us beat the ravaging coronavirus, protect frontliners in the war against it and graciously imbue scientists with the knowledge to find cure and vaccine in no distant time.

While we're hoping on God for mercy, i enjoin all residents to abide with lockdown and social distancing protocols and maintain personal and environmental hygiene.

"Muslims are enjoined to note that Eid-el-fitr is not a compulsory religious activity (fard) and at no point should it be observed if doing so will undermine the fundamental purpose of Shariah: security, a multifaceted concept, which includes personal, community, national, environmental and health components, among others."

It's pertinent to reiterate that there is curfew between 8.00pm and 6.00am and the orders banning congregational worship and bars from operating are in force.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has congratulated Muslims in the State on the successful completion of this year’s Ramadan fasting and the celebration of Eid-el-Fitri, urging them to continue on the path of spirituality and peaceful co-existence among every Lagosian.

Sanwo-Olu in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, on Saturday said the occasion of Eid-el-Fitri is very significant to Muslims across the world as it marks the end of one month of abstinence from worldly pleasures with fasting and prayers, observed in accordance with the Islamic injunctions.

He said: “Today, I join millions of people around the world, to wish our Muslim brothers and sisters in Lagos State and in Nigeria happy Eid-el-fitri.”

“For Muslims, today’s celebration is very unique. It is a feast to mark the end of a month long spiritual renewal following thirty days of fasting and other religious acts.”

“Ramadan was a period that you denied yourselves the worldly pleasures, turned to your creator for total cleansing and upheld other religious values.”

“Such values as the reaffirmation of your duty to serve one another, helping the poor and the vulnerable in the society, offering gratitude, showing compassion and generosity among other good deeds that guide your faith.”

The Governor reminded the Muslim faithful of the new reality caused by the global coronavirus pandemic, saying it has altered the way we live, work and celebrate.

He said: “Traditionally, the end of Ramadan is marked with fanfare, where thousands of worshippers head to various designated praying grounds in their localities for special Eid prayer, followed by festive gatherings, visits to families and friends, gift exchanges, feasts among friends, neighbours and relations.”

“However, these activities, which are a reflection of joy and happiness of the season cannot hold this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.”

“As we celebrate, I want us to remember that our fight against the COVID-19 is not over. Let us reflect on the last two to three months of our lives as individuals, as a State and as a nation.  We should also remember our health care workers, and thousands of COVID-19 patients who would have loved to be at home to celebrate with us at this moment.”

“Therefore, I implore all to celebrate moderately with our families.”

“My wife and I hope the occasion of Eid-el-Fitri brings joy to every Lagosian irrespective of religious inclination.”

Police parade alleged kidnapper of Ibadan Muslim cleric’s twins

Oyo State Police Command on Monday paraded seven suspects arrested over the abduction of the twins children of Ibadan based cleric, Sheikh Taofeek Akewugbagold.

The suspects were paraded  by the Oyo state Police Commissioner, CP, Shina Olukolu at the police headquarters, Eleyele Ibadan.

Also, part of the N4m ransom collected by the kidnappers to free the twins as well as the vehicles used for the operation recovered from the suspects were also paraded before journalists.

The kidnapping syndicate paraded by the police includes: Rildwan Taiwo,(30) Rafiu Mutiu(35), Olumide Ajala, (36) Fatai Akanji,(39) Bashiru Muhammed (25), Opeyemi Oyeleye (33)and Rafiu Modinat (29).


Modinat, the only female member of gang was said to have been saddled with the responsibility of  taking care of the twins while they were in captivity of the kidnappers.

While parading the suspects before journalists, Olukoku said, ”I wish to inform you that in the sensational case of the kidnapping of the 2-year old twins of Alhaji Taofeek Azeez “Akewugbagold” on the 25″ April, 2020. All the suspects have been arrested with substantial parts of the ransom collected, the gun used for the operation, the two operational vehicles, and one motorcycle were also recovered from them.”

”The notorious criminals attacked his wife and subsequently abducted his 2-year old twin to an unknown destination. The criminal assailants later demanded for ransom of Fifty Million Naira (N50, 000, 000.00) before the two abducted babies would be released.”

“As soon as the incident was reported at Ojoo Police Station and later transferred to AK Eleyele/SARS office Dugbe, Ibadan, a team of AKS/SARS operatives swung into action while concerted efforts was intensified to rescue the abducted babies and arrest the perpetrators of the heinous crime. The abducted babies were released unhurt eight ‘8’ days later after their father had parted with an alleged sum of four million naira only (N4,000,000) as ransom to the hoodlums.”

The kidnapping syndicate paraded by the police includes: Rildwan Taiwo,(30) Rafiu Mutiu(35), Olumide Ajala,(36) Fatai Akanji,(39) Bashiru Muhammed (25,Opeyemi Oyeleye (33)and Rafiu Modinat (29), a female member of gang who was detailed to take care of the babies while in captivity were all arrested in their respective hideouts in connection with the crime

Just In: Lagos Assembly Chief Imam Loses Mother

The mother of former Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs Dr AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef, Alhaja Risikat Balogun, is dead.

She died a few minutes ago at her Ogba, Lagos residence.

The late Alhaja Balogun was survived by seven children.

Dr Abdul Lateef, the immediate past Lagos State Amirul Hajj, announced the death of his mother on his Facebook page.



He wrote: “It is my turn to grieve! My darling mum has just died. Inna lilahi wa inna ilaehi rajiun.

“Please pray for her in your places. DO NOT COME FOR HER BURIAL. LET US COMPLY WITH GOVERNMENT DIRECTIVES ! She lived well and died well. May Allah forgive her shortcomings and grant her Al jannah fridaus. Aamin.”

Speaking with The Nation, Dr AbdulLateef appealed to Lagosians not to come for the Janazah (funeral).

This, he said, was to comply with the directives of the Lagos State government on social distancing due to the pandemic coronavirus.

Giving insight into the death of Alhaja Balogun, an aide of the ex-commissioner, AbdulGaniy Oladippupo, told The Nation that she was rejected for treatment by a private hospital due to COVID-19 pandemic.

“The hospital rejected her for four days. The hospital management insisted that Alhaja should be taken to the COVID-19 test centre first before they can have anything to do with her despite her urgent need for medical treatment.

“The results came out yesterday (Wednesday) and was negative. Unfortunately, Mama died this morning, ” he said.

Two Arrested for Stealing a month old baby

Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Patrick Mbama ‘m’, 41 years old and Ogechi Chinonso Ekwebele ‘f’, 30 years old, for stealing a month old baby  and selling him to a buyer in Lagos.

AgegePulse learnt that, the suspects were intercepted by Police Officers from Anthony Police Division, on enforcement duty at Anthony Oke pin down point.

The officers stopped a Toyota Sienna SUV carrying 7 passengers. The officers' enquiries fuelled the suspicion that the baby was stolen.

The suspects stated that they were coming from Orlu, Imo State. Further investigations  revealed that the suspects had sold the baby to a childless couple in Lagos.

The childless couples,  Izuchukwu Okafor ‘m’ 51 years old and Cecilia Okafor ‘f’ 40 years old were arrested thereafter arrested after the suspects' confession.

Recovered from the suspects was the baby's original birth certificate and parents names.

The baby’s biological parents have been traced and he would be handed over to his parents today

The suspects are to be  charged to Court.

In a statement issued by the church, Bakare said it was the church’s way of contributing to the fight against COVID-19 in the country.

Lagos State may be in for another round of interminable lockdown of movement and business activities should the residents fail to adhere to the public health guidelines issued by the State Government in response to the fight against the ravaging Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the State Government would be forced to review terms of easing the lockdown if there was no improvement in the adherence to the guidelines initiated to break the cycle of transmission of the dreaded virus.

The Governor spoke on Saturday during a maiden briefing after the ease of a five-week lockdown imposed by the Federal Government.

Besides, Sanwo-Olu said there will be a change in the State’s isolation strategy in the coming weeks, pointing out that Lagos was transiting towards decentralisation of management of COVID-19 cases, which would lead to the accreditation and incorporation of primary healthcare facilities and private hospitals for the treatment of mild-to-moderate cases of COVID-19 patients.

The Government, he said, was taken aback, watching residents going about their businesses in the last five days after the ease of lockdown without complying with the public health guidelines despite massive advocacy.

Sanwo-Olu said the crowd observed at various banks and markets across the State flouted the public gathering directive, noting that the Government would not watch while people violate the State’s guidelines towards combating the pandemic.

He said: “As a Government elected to uphold security of its citizens, which include health security, we will not hesitate to review the terms of the easing of lockdown if we do not see an improvement in adherence to our public health guidelines in the next couple of days.

“We will be forced to take a painful decision of bringing the entire system under lockdown if we continue to see evidence that Lagosians are determined to flout the rules.

“As we eased restrictions on movement, we have increased our testing capacity and we are also actively increasing our isolation capacity. Members of the public will also see a change in our isolation strategy in the weeks ahead, as we transition towards decentralisation.

“What this means is that, we will be introducing community management of cases, by accrediting and incorporating primary healthcare facilities and private healthcare facilities for the management of mild-to-moderate cases of COVID-19 patients. However, we will guide this initiative carefully to ensure that it is not done at the expense of the capacity required to handle other medical cases.”

Sanwo-Olu said the State Government’s order restricting the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, had been defied, directing the police to confiscate any commercial motorcycle seen flouting his directive.

The Governor also instructed security personnel to strictly enforce the ban on inter-state movement, directing the police to turn back all pedestrians trekking to Lagos from boundary highways.

The Governor said the task of ridding the State of the ravaging virus must be a collective responsibility and not a task for the Government alone. He advised residents to adhere strictly to the health measures initiated by the Government, stressing that the use of face mask was made compulsory to protect unaffected population from the virus.

Sanwo-Olu said: “We are at a critical point in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic where every citizen of the State needs to take responsibility for their health and wellbeing.

“As citizens, we have a great burden upon us, to behave responsibly. These times demand a lot from us, in terms of actions and behaviours that may not be comfortable. To stay alive and well, we have to abandon old habits and customs, and adopt new ones.”

Sanwo-Olu said the controlled and gradual easing of the five-week lockdown was to strike a balance between the protection of lives and the sustenance of livelihoods.

He praised manufacturing and construction companies for complying with terms of Government’s framework, noting that their activities, in the last five days, had made beneficial impacts on the State economy.

The Governor, however, frowned at a “very low” compliance with guidelines by operators of commercial buses, observing that yellow buses failed to comply with the capacity restrictions outlined in our framework.

He said the Government’s monitoring teams at State and Local Government levels had been working hard to raise compliance levels to 100 per cent.

Sanwo-Olu reiterated his commitment towards strengthening the State’s capacity in combating the pandemic, thanking frontline medical and emergency workers for their sacrifice to the citizens.

The Governor also hailed waste disposal teams for not relenting in their effort to keep the State health despite being vulnerable to being infected with COVID-19.

Human skeleton found in pastor’s house in Ogun

Peace Land Estate, Akute, Ogun State was a scene of horror yesterday, as a human skeleton, believed to be that of a woman, was found in a pastor’s house.

According to eyewitnesses, the shocking discovery was made when the owner of the pastor’s house tried to evict him from his flat over late payment of rent.

“The pastor did not pay his rent for a year. The landlady, who was angry with the situation of things, stormed his home with some people in-order to evict him, but were shocked when they discovered a human skeleton inside,” one of the sources revealed.

People in the neighbourhood were attracted to the scene while the matter was quickly reported to the police.

However the suspect, who owns a church, was said to have made some revelations about the skeleton. He alleged that it belonged to his sister. According to him, his parents had just three children – himself and two sisters. He said he lived with them in the flat.

However, for sometime now, one of the sisters named Funmi has not been seen again.

When people asked about her, “he would say she went to the mountain,” said the source.

She, however, allegedly died since 2010 and her body was abandoned in the house.

From the position of the skeleton, it appeared the deceased was kneeling on the ground.

The Police have since arrested the suspect.

LASEMA Seals Distressed 3-Storey Building, Averts Secondary Incident

LASEMA today in consonance with Mr. Governor's creed of "Safety of Lives and Property of Lagosians," averted a secondary incident at 7, Sule Close, Ijora badia in Orile axis of Lagos, when it sealed-off a distressed three-storey building.

The ill maintained, distressed building domiciled at 7, Sule Close, Ijora Badia that showed visible cracks on it's walls and pillars, was sealed-off by LASEMA Response Team in conjunction with it's collaborators and other responders from the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning, to save lives of residents incase of a total collapse, while awaiting outcome of it's integrity tests.

The collaborators/Responders included those from the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority, LASPPPA, the Lagos State Material Testing Laboratory, LMTL, the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA and the Apapa Iganmu Local Council Development Authority, LCDA, Environmental Unit.

Preliminary report by the LASEMA Response Team on the distressed building at 7, Sule Close, Ijora badia following the DG's alert on it's status, has it that, "Upon arrival at the scene of incident, it was discovered that a three storey building is distressed and showing visible cracks on the walls and pillars due to lack of maintenance.

"However, no loss of lives nor injuries were sustained at the scene. LRT, LASPPPA, LMTL and Apapa Iganmu LCDA Environmental Unit are responders at the scene, where all occupants of the said building had been evacuated and the entire building has been cordoned off and sealed to prevent any secondary incident.

This report by the LRT follows the LASEMA DG's earlier alert in the day on the Compromised Building situated at No 7 Sule Close, Ijora Badia in Apapa Iganmu LCDA which states that, "The attention of the agency has been drawn to a building with failing structural integrity at the above address.

"The agency’s response team alongside with LABCA And Lagos State Material Testing Agency will be carrying out a full inspection and additional testing.

"The results will determine whether the building will be allowed to remain standing or whether it will be leveled to ground zero.

"Residents are advised to exercise caution, and where possible, seek alternate lodging until the integrity of the building is determined.

"We are determined to prevent the unfortunate incidence of lives being lost due to unsafe building conditions and are working with all stakeholders to prevent more of the same across Lagos".

Sports Ministry places late Rashidi Yekini's mother on monthly stipend

The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, has placed the mother of late Super Eagles striker, Rashidi Yekini, Alhaja Sikiratu, on  a monthly stipend.

The Representative of the Minister at the donation ceremony, Olaitan Shittu, disclosed this in Ijagbo, near Offa in Kwara on Wednesday, when he donated Ramadan gifts on behalf of the Minister to the aged mother.

The Sports Minister, Mr Sunday Dare, also donated the sum of N50,000 as part of the Ramadan gifts to the aged matriarch on Wednesday.

Shittu explained that it was not the first time the Minister was reaching out to Alhaja Sikiratu Yekini as he was also at Mama Yekini's residence in September, 2019.

Responding, Alhaja Yekini who spoke in her local dialect (Yoruba), thanked the Minister and prayed fervently for him.

"I have been abandoned for a long time and have not seen any help from anyone.

"I was hospitalised for few days, some months ago and I did cater for myself despite scarce resources, even last month, I received treatment from the hospital.

"I need help from Nigerians, but this Minister has done very well, especially remembering me in this holy month of Ramadan.

"Since my son died, it has been very tough for me because I do not have any help from people. Rashidi's siblings are not doing well too, so, I was left to struggle for life everyday," Alhaja Sikiratu Yekini said.

Late Rashidi Yekini who died eight years ago in Ibadan after retiring from football, had his professional career span more than two decades and was mainly associated with Vitória de Setúbal in Portugal, but he also played in six other countries besides Nigeria.

Yekini scored 37 goals as a Nigerian international from 58 games and represented the nation in five major tournaments, including two World Cups where he scored the country's first-ever goal in the competition against Bulgaria in the USA 94 World Cup.

He was also named the African Footballer of the Year in 1993.

Items donated include, 50kg bag of rice, 10kg bag of wheat, six tins of Milo as well as the sum of N50,000.

Motorists sleep on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway amid curfew

Hundreds of motorists passed the night at the Kara/Berger end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday/ Tuesday, as they were stranded following the enforcement of the curfew imposed on Lagos and Ogun states as well as the Federal Capital Territory by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

While some of the motorists lamented spending hours for journeys that should have lasted minutes, others decried passing the night in their vehicles after being stuck in the gridlock that followed the closure of the Berger boundary between Lagos and Ogun states.


PUNCH Metro observed that security agents manned both the inward and outward lanes of the road at Berger.

Police personnel from Lagos and Ogun state commands, officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Vehicle Inspection Officers and men of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps were seen at the checkpoint.

A motorist, Adedimeji Okanlawon, said the policemen at the checkpoint inward Lagos denied him passage despite informing them that he was an essential worker, adding that he had to pass the night in his vehicle.

Okanlawon stated, “I left the office in Arepo around midnight and the road was free until I got to the Sparklight Estate area on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. I initially thought that the gridlock was because the policemen were checking for essential workers, but I became worried when there was no movement for hours.

“I showed him my ID card, but he ignored me; so, I trekked back to where I parked and passed the night in my car. But a lot of people conveying food items, charcoal and other materials, as well as tankers were among those stuck in the gridlock. I saw a lot of motorists sleeping on the road as there was no movement. I left the place at exactly 6.45am.”

Another motorist, Daramola Adebutu, said many people left their places of work late despite being aware of the curfew, adding that the roadblock at Berger spilled over to the Third Mainland Bridge, Alausa and Agidingbi areas of Lagos.

In the Sango area of Ogun State, motorists plying the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway also faced a similar situation as security agents at the toll gate area prevented them from gaining entry into the state.


A motorist, who identified himself simply as Idris, said he and other motorists were left with no option but to drive on the kerb because the policemen had barricaded the regular route.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said, “On Monday, we had issues all over; the roads were shut because of the curfew; and when we shut down non-essential movement, essential workers were trapped in the gridlock. But eventually, we paved a way for them to pass.

“Today (Tuesday), we went around with the Commissioner of Police to assess the situation and the checkpoint at Berger was shifted to a wider area to accommodate more vehicular movement.

Ikeja Electric Resumes Disconnection, Urges Customers to Pay Bills

The suspension earlier placed on disconnection of power supply of its customers has been lifted by Ikeja Electric.

On April 1, 2020, Business Post reported that Ikeja Electric announced that it would not be disconnecting electricity of non-paying customers within its franchise network during the 2-week stay-at-home period enforced by federal government to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The move, according to the Acting CEO of Ikeja Electric, Ms Folake Soetan, was to ensure that “our customers enjoy steady and quality supply throughout this difficult period and beyond. We recognize the fact that electricity supply is critical to our ability to stay safe, clean and indoors.”

Last Monday, President Muhammadu Buhari announced that from May 4, 2020, there would be an ease in the 5-week lockdown in Abuja, Lagos and Ogun States.

In a notice today, Ikeja Electric said following the development, it was lifting the suspension on disconnection activities, urging energy consumers to pay their bills.

The electricity distribution firm said the appeal became necessary because of its need to meet some obligations to the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

“As we begin partial lockdown, we use this medium to inform our customers of the need to start paying their bills to avoid power cuts as we have also lifted the suspension of disconnection activities.

“The request is necessitated by the need to meet our obligations to the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), as paying your bills will enable us to meet our financial obligation to the market operators and this will ensure that the country continues to generate power supply,” Ikeja Electric said.

While thanking its customers for their “continued understanding and allowing us to serve you,” the company appealed to consumers to “continue to adhere to all the safety rules of personal hygiene and social distancing.”

Ikeja Electric expressed hope that business activities will gradually return to normal with the partial lifting of the lockdown order by the federal government.

It was learnt that throughout the period of the lockdown, Ikeja Electric focused on increasing supply to its customers.

On Monday, May 4, 2020, some  $311 million US Dollars - stolen from the citizens of Nigeria during the Abacha regime - were safely returned to our country from the United States.

These funds have already been allocated, and will be used in full, for vital and decades-overdue infrastructure development: The second Niger Bridge, the Lagos-Ibadan and Abuja-Kaduna-Kano expressways - creating tens of thousands of Nigerian construction jobs and local skills, which can then be useful in future projects.

Part of the funds will also be invested in the Mambilla Power Project which, when completed, will provide electricity to some three million homes - over ten million citizens - in our country.

The receipt of these stolen monies - and the hundreds of millions more that have already been returned from the United Kingdom and Switzerland - are an opportunity for the development of our nation, made far harder for those decades the country was robbed of these funds.

Indeed, previous monies returned last year from Switzerland - some $320 million US dollars - are already being used for the government’s free school feeding scheme, a stipend for millions of disadvantaged citizens, and grain grants for those in severe food hardship.

Without these funds, the fight against Covid-19 would be even tougher.

The latest return is a testament to the growing and deepening relationship between the government of Nigeria and the government of the United States.

Without the cooperation both from the UK Government, the US Executive branch and US Congress, we would not have achieved the return of these funds at all.

For years many countries deemed successive Nigerian administrations as too corrupt, too venal and too likely to squander and re-steal the stolen monies - so they did not return the funds.

Today, US, UK and other jurisdictions have found the partnership with the nation of Nigeria they can finally trust.

The Buhari Administration is committed to - and is enacting - total and zero tolerance to corruption in politics and public administration.

The days when government was seen and used by the political class as their personal ATM to empty are over.

The time of better governance and clean hands in the affairs of state is here to stay.

Lagos Speaker denies contracts scam claims

Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, Monday denied allegations that he was laundering money through contract scams.

Obasa described as “absurd, abusive” and “malicious” the claims that he awarded contracts to himself through companies registered in the names of his father, wife and children.

The allegations, he said, were made by online news medium Sahara Reporters in a publication titled “Exposed: Speaker of Lagos Assembly, Obasa, Awards Contracts to self through Company Registered in son’s name”.

But, Obasa’s counsel, Mr. Lawal Pedro SAN, in an April 30 letter seen by The Nation, said none of the firms mentioned by the publication had ever been engaged or awarded any contract by the lawmakers.

He demanded that Sahara Reporters publisher, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, retract the story within seven days and apologise, otherwise face a N1 billion defamation lawsuit.

The letter, ‘Demand for retraction of defamatory statements published against and concerning the person of Rt. Hon, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa and apology for the publication, reads in part:

Pedro said although the lawmakers had already denied the “said false and malicious publication on social media platforms” the online medium repeated the claims elsewhere.

“In your subsequent publication of 25th March 2020 captioned ‘Exclusive: Tinubu, GAC back Lagos Assembly Speaker, Obasa, over suspension of Lawmakers, corruption’ you repeated the same malicious statement concerning our client…” Pedro said.

According to him, the publication had damaged Obasa’s reputation globally.

He added: In the circumstance, it is our client’s instruction and we hereby demand of you, within 7 days of receipt of this letter a retraction of the said false, malicious and defamatory publication against our client through your online publication, social media platforms and three (3) National Newspapers circulating in Nigeria.

“You are also to tender a written unreserved apology to our client for the publication. TAKE NOTICE that, if you fail, refuse or neglect to meet our client’s humble  request within the stipulated number of days, we have his further instruction to commence a legal action against you and your organization for the malicious defamatory publication and to claim N1,000,000,000.00 (One Billion Naira) damages.”

The five-week lockdown imposed by the Federal Government on Lagos State and two other states to combat Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) will be eased on Monday (tomorrow), but Lagos State Government has asked all its civil servants not to resume for work immediately.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a briefing on Sunday at the State House in Marina, said the delayed resumption of the State’s workforce is a deliberate attempt to prevent a development that may lead to a crowding of people on the roads and public places.

Only emergency workers and those on essential duties will be allowed to work on Monday, the Governor said.

Sanwo-Olu said the State’s civil service offices would be re-opened for business on Tuesday, but only officers from Grade Level 15 and above would be required to be in the office. If any junior-ranked officer must be at work, the Governor said the Accounting Officer of the Ministry must give clearance to the officer.

Sanwo-Olu said: “In amending the work guidelines earlier issued, which stopped members of the public service from Grade Level 1 to 12 from going to work; we have had to review this position and we are extending the directive to all civil servants, regardless of level. All civil servants must stay away from work on Monday.

“On Tuesday, only officers from Grade Level 15 and above have express permission to come to work. All other essential officers that may need to be at work will be informed by the Accounting Officer of each Ministry as may be required.

“From Monday on, there will be curfew from 8pm to 6am and all movement within these hours are prohibited, except for people on essential services, which are agro-products, petroleum products, relief materials and food supplies.

“We want to use this as a demonstration of our commitment to gradual easing of the lockdown. We do not want people to rush out tomorrow and see the easing of the lockdown as an attempt to believe that the spread of the pandemic is all over.”

As part of the moves by the State Government to prevent crowding in public places, the Governor directed all markets to open for three days weekly in alternation. Food markets across the State are to be opened only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9am to 3pm.

Non-food markets, Sanwo-Olu directed, shall only open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays within the stipulated hours. He said all traders must put on face mask and provide hand sanitizers in their markets.

It is compulsory for any resident that must be in public places to face mask, the Governor said.

Also, banks and other private firms must open businesses with 60 per cent of staff strength, while also operating within the hours of 9am and 3pm. The Governor enjoined the privately-owned companies and manufacturing firms to arrange for the transportation of their essential staff that would be at work.

Gov. Sanwo-Olu, however, extended the operating hours for eateries and restaurants from 9am to 7pm, due to Ramadan fasting. But the Governor said restaurants and eateries must not allow their customers to eat-in. Food must not be served, only take-away packs and delivery, Sanwo-Olu directed.

All regulations initiated by the State Government must be strictly adhered to by public and private companies and members of the public, the Governor warned.

He urged members of the public to report any erring company to the Government through the State’s whistleblowing policy. Sanwo-Olu gave out three hotlines through the which whistleblowers can report those flouting the State’s guidelines. The numbers are: 09010513197, 09010513198, 09010513199.

Earlier on Sunday, Gov. Sanwo-Olu held a virtual meeting with 40 traditional rulers and 57 local council chairmen across the State, discussing the State Government’s guidelines on easing the lockdown. The Governor urged monarchs and the council chairmen to disseminate all advocacy messages and guidelines to residents in their domains, stressing that the grassroots must be adequately informed on regulations initiated to ease the lockdown.

“Today, I had a useful discussion with 40 paramount traditional rulers in the State and 57 LGA chairmen. I am satisfied with suggestions coming out of these meetings. It is really about collaborative efforts and using these leaders as champions to disseminate all information and advocacy to the grassroots,” the Governor said.

The Governor allayed the fear of residents on movement, urging them to keep to the hygiene tips. He said the State had opened a dedicated isolation centre for health and emergency workers infected in the line of duty.

Sanwo-Olu said the State will be embarking on aggressive testing in community, noting that the Government had collected 3,000 samples that were yet to be tested due to global shortage of reagent used for molecular testing.

He said: “We have 3,000 samples collected but we have not been able to carry the test because of global shortage of reagent for molecular testing. We are hoping that some of the reagents will be supplied tomorrow and Tuesday.

“We made order for more reagents because of cases we have seen and it would not be out of place to see positive cases in the range of 20 per cent out of the 3,000 samples collected. We are improving the capacity of our isolation facilities in preparation to take care of more patients.”

Starting from Tuesday, the Governor directed the release of all vehicles seized for flouting the lockdown to their owners free of charge. The vehicles in this category include those seized not later than April 14.

Sanwo-Olu said all decisions taken by the State Government were adopted in the belief to protect all residents from the ravaging pandemic.

“We will continue to do our very best and maintain high level of transparency in the disbursement of resources donated towards the fight against COVID-19,” the Governor said.

NURTW ROLLS OUT OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES TO MEMBERS

It is no longer news that the whole world is currently fighting a war that is unlike the conventional war. The most challenging thing about this "health war" is that it can not be seen, has no cure yet and is no respecter of social status, age or gender. The number of confirmed cases sadly keep rising locally and globally.

The Chairman, Lagos State Chapter of NURTW, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, MC OluOmo, stated in a press release.

"Sadly, this strange ailment keeps claiming lives of the patients and those treating them. Quite inspiring are some retired medical professionals who came out of retirement to help save lives, the efforts of the health care workers during this period will forever linger in our hearts. You are all truely our HEROES.

"Our hearts goes out to the families of those lost to this pandemic and to those currently battling to survive the 'unseen enemy', we wish them safe and quickest recovery.

"As transporters who convey Lagosians from all walks of life every day to their respective destinations, we understand the value of service delivery in a complex state like ours hence, the need to roll out new guidelines to our members in order to protect them and their esteemed passengers.

"We are using this medium to appeal to all our Union members, drivers in particular, to please strictly follow the directives of the State and Federal governments, National Centre for Disease Control(NCDC) and World Health Organisation(WHO) in order to stop the avoidable spread of the virus.

"In order to work in synergy with the Lagos State Government directives, the NURTW Lagos State Council has set up  a Task Force Unit to arrest any driver/ Union member that violates or go against the guidelines below:

1. The NURTW state Secretariat will operate at 60% staff capacity forthwith. The staff members that are to resume at the office will be duly communicated.

2. The Secretariat will operate between 9am to 3pm daily.

3. Only motor park chairmen and park attendants are allowed to resume at their respective motor parks for now, this is aimed at reducing crowd at the motor parks.

4. Operational time is between 8am to 7pm daily, no excuse will be entertained from any driver caught operating after the this time.

5. All passengers MUST put on their face mask. Failure to use it, such passenger should not be allowed into their vehicles.

6. Tricycle Owners and Operator’s Association of Nigeria “TOOAN”(Maruwa operators) are to abide by the Lagos state government's directive of carrying two (2) passengers at a go.

7. Drivers and their bus conductors are to ensure the practice of social distancing by operating at 60% loading capacity.

Finally, The NURTW Lagos State Council have set up  a task force to menitor and arrest any union member and driver that violate or against the guidelines above.

Let us all support the efforts of the State government in fighting this pandemic by adhering strictly to the above guidelines and many more that had been given by the authorities.

COVID-19: Dokpesi, daughter-in-law, six other family members test positive

The founder of DAAR Communications Plc, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi and his daughter-in-law along with six members of his family have tested positive for coronavirus.

This is coming three days after his son and Chairman of the board of the company, Raymond Dokpesi Jnr, also tested positive for the virus.

A test conducted by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on the Dokpesi family came out positive for eight members of the family.

Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola has conveyed the approval of the State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu that all Offices in the State Secretariat, Alausa, as well as other Government Establishments Statewide, be opened for activities with effect from Monday, 4th May 2020.

He said the approval, as contained in a circular issued on Thursday 30th of April, 2020 with the Reference Number CIR/HOS/'20/Vol.1/046, follows an earlier directive given by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Muhammadu Buhari on the gradual easing of existing lockdown in Lagos State.

Muri-Okunola said, “It is worthy of note that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had in a Statewide broadcast on Wednesday evening, 29th April 2020, issued some specific directives to Public Servants in the State on modalities for resumption after some weeks of the total lockdown of activities across the State”.

The re-opening of the Secretariat, the Head of Service asserted "would be subject not only to the conditions earlier specified prior to the announcement of the lockdown, vide Circulars Ref. Nos.: CIR/ HOS/ ’20/Vol.1 / 031, 037 and 039 of 3rd, 20th and 22nd March, 2020 respectively, on measures to contain the pandemic, but also on some new protocols as well".

Listing some of the new protocols, the circular stated that officers on Grade Levels 12 and below must continue working from home, unless otherwise directed by their Accounting Officers, with the exception of Frontline Responders and other essential Health Workers, irrespective of Grade, as well as Enforcement Agencies.

The HoS urged Accounting Officers to carry out a Needs Assessment of critical Staff, identify essential Officers and draw up a Flexible Work Roster for Officers on Grade Levels 13 and above, in compliance with the Physical Distancing Principle as stated by the World Health Organisation.

According to Muri-Okunola, sanitisers, as well as washable and reusable facemasks, must be distributed to Officers who are required to wear them in the office and all Public spaces while hand gloves and protective gears should be provided for cleaners. He stressed that non-usage of the items will attract strict penalties.

In addition, the Head of Service instructed all Directors of Administration and Human Resource to ensure that the entire Office Environment is disinfected and kept clean always.

While advising officers in need of medical assistance to do so via consultation through telephone or online in order to minimise and eliminate visits to the Staff Clinic and Hospitals, the HoS implored all sick persons to stay away from the office.

He maintained that all public servants must abide by the 8 p.m to 6 a.m curfew pronounced by Mr. Governor, pointing out that the Secretariat and other Government Establishments would remain shut to members of the public and non-staff who are advised to conduct their affairs through other channels such as telephone, emails and online platforms.

Muri-Okunola also encouraged Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), to ensure adequate personal hygiene by providing liquid soap with running water at all entrances and in toilets for regular and thorough washing of hands.
