Court Affirms LASG Powers To Regulate Real Estate Transactions | AgegePulse Magazine ... As Stakeholders in Real Estate Sector Are Enjoined to Register With LASRERA

A Federal High Court in Lagos has affirmed the powers of the Lagos State Government to regulate the practice of real estate transactions within the State.

A statement signed by the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), noted that the judgment delivered on March 22, 2021, by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court, struck out the originating motion filed by the Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria (ESVARBON) and the Nigeria Institute of Estate Surveyors And Valuers (NIESV) to challenge the authority of the State government to regulate the sector.

LASRERA Logo

According to him, the applicants - ESVARBON and NIESV - had filed the suit against the Lagos State Government and the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), who were listed as first and second respondents respectively, claiming that they are the ‘sole body’ created by Law in Nigeria to determine persons who are to become Estate Surveyors and Valuers.

His words: “The first applicant claimed that by virtue of Section 2 of the Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria Act Cap E13 LFN 2007 and Section 1 (3) of the 1999 Constitution, it was unconstitutional for Lagos State Government to create an entity known as the Lagos State Estate Agency Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) that compels registration of all Estate Surveyors and Valuers practising in the State”.

“The applicants had also argued that under Section 4 (6) – (9) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) or any other Section or Schedule of the same Constitution, the Lagos State House of Assembly lacked the legislative power to enact a bill to regulate the practice of estate surveying and valuation”, he added.

The Commissioner also averred that, consequently, the applicants sought an order of the court restraining the respondents whether by themselves, agents, servants and/or privies from implementing, enforcing, in any way or manner whatsoever and howsoever giving effect or further effect to the directives of compulsory registration with Lagos State Government.

Onigbanjo said Justice Aneke struck out the originating motion for lacking in merit and upheld the powers of the Lagos State Government to establish a Regulatory Agency for Estate Agents trading in Lagos State.

By the ruling, the Lagos State Government called on all practitioners to abide by the Lagos State Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) Law and register with the Agency in line with the determination of the Government to protect the general public and ensure genuine persons and organisations possess the required platform to practice their trade.

JAMB Announces 2021 UTME Dates, Says NIN Mandatory | AgegePulse Magazine

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has set April 8 for the commencement of the registration for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The examination is scheduled to hold between June 5 and June 19, the agency said.

Jamb

The examination body, which is responsible for the conduct of the entrance examination into the nation’s tertiary institutions, took the decision at the meeting of its governing board held on March 22.

According to a statement issued by the board and signed by the head of the public affairs and protocol unit, Fabian Benjamin, both the UTME and the direct entry forms will be on sale concurrently.

It, however, added that for any prospective candidates to be registered, the National Identification Number (NIN) is mandatory.

The NIN, which is a unique number that identifies individuals, is issued by the country’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) upon enrolment.

“For any person to be registered for UTME/DE, he/she must supply his/her National Identity Number (NIN). It is therefore mandatory for participation in the 2021 Registration Exercise,” the statement reads in part.

JAMB had in the past made the NIN mandatory for the candidates willing to register for its examinations but later announced the cancellation of the policy following the harrowing experiences of the candidates at the various registration centres.

Meanwhile, the examination body has retained the cost of registration at N3,500 and an additional N500 for the mandatory purchase of reading texts for the candidates.

It added that the forms will be on sale across 700 centres nationwide between April 8 and May 15, while the examination is scheduled to hold between June 5 and June 19, 2021.

#Flooding: Take Ownership of Pen Cinema Flyover, LASG Charges Agege Community | AgegePulse Magazine

As part of efforts to address flash flooding around the newly constructed Agege Pen Cinema Flyover Bridge and other parts of the State, the Lagos State Government has called on residents of Agege community to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels.

Agege Pen Cinema Bridge

Speaking against the backdrop of the recent flash floods experienced at Oke-Koto and environs after a heavy downpour, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Works and Infrastructure, Mrs. Aramide Adeyoye noted that the flooding was caused by clogging in the main collector drain conduits along Capitol Road.

Noting that the Agege Pen Cinema Flyover Bridge was designed to eliminate the perennial traffic gridlocks across the intersections at Agege, Adeyoye said the adjoining roads were also constructed by the State Government with an adequate drainage system to mitigate the recurrence of flooding associated with the corridor.

She added that the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels by the residents of Agege community was solely responsible for the severe clogging and siltation of the drains, thereby resulting in the flooding as experienced recently at Oke-Koto.

The Special Adviser warned residents to desist from the act of dumping refuse into the drains, stating that the Emergency Flood Abatement Gangs (EFAG) of the Ministry of The Environment and Water Resources have embarked on desilting of the drains to allow free flow of run-off/stormwater and prevent flooding on the carriageway.

Adeyoye said: “At the moment the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration is making efforts to reduce the number of bad roads in the State. A drive through the streets and highways of Lagos will reveal that roads had either been repaired or are being fixed across many locations as Government is making frantic efforts to provide infrastructural facilities that will ameliorate the suffering of the citizenry”.

“Any road is as good as its drains, once we clog the drains with refuse, we compromise the integrity of the pavement and overall riding surface. Therefore, as we continue to prepare for the rains, people must stop the various abuses on road transport infrastructure challenges associated with the rainy season”, she added.

Speaking further, the Special Adviser emphasised the need to ensure the sustainability of road assets and optimise the level-of-service outcome in return for the most cost-effective financial input, calling on community leaders to be actively involved in guiding against vandalism of public infrastructure.

“The State Government holds as premium the responsibility of strategic provision of road infrastructure across the State. Sustainability also requires we engage with the citizenry to register in their subconsciousness and seek their support in terms of taking ownership of the roads and to guide jealously these collective assets against misuse and abuse”, Adeyoye stated.

Discos now selling FG’s free meters, consumers allege | AgegePulse Magazine

Power consumers have raised the alarm that power distribution companies were now selling the free meters that were provided for electricity users by the Federal Government.

In October 2020, the Federal Government inaugurated the National Mass Metering Programme in respect of which the Central Bank of Nigeria issued a framework for financing the scheme.

Prepaid meter

The programme was inaugurated to increase the country’s metering rate and eliminate arbitrary estimated bills that were given unmetered customers by Discos.

Through the scheme, the CBN provided financing support to the Discos for the procurement of meters for customers from local meter manufacturers.

The meters were meant to be installed free of charge in the residence of beneficiaries, but power users on Friday alleged that some Discos were beginning to collect money for the meters.

They told our correspondent that some Discos claimed that the scheme was being run alongside the Meter Asset Providers programme, but argued that the MAPs had not been successful, which was why the government introduced the NMMP.

Speaking on studies done by his group as regards the installation of meters under the NMMP, the National Secretary, Nigeria Electricity Consumer Advocacy Network, Uket Obonga, said Discos were selling meters that were meant to be free.

He said, “Look at the National Mass Metering Programme that the government inaugurated recently to ensure mass metering, some Discos are now selling the prepaid meters that were given to them free of charge for customers,

“I held a programme in Calabar and put a call directly to one of the commissioners there to tell him what’s happening. The next day Port Harcourt Disco invited me to go with them for meter launch and so forth.”

An official with the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors, the umbrella body for Discos, Akin Akinpelu, confirmed this to our correspondent in Abuja.

Also, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission said it would not delve into the matter unless the affected customers tabled it as a complain to the NERC.

The Head, Public Affairs, NERC, Michael Faloseyi, said the matter was purely between Discos and consumers, but made it clear that once a complaint, was made in that regard, the commission would step in.

How We Formed Gang During #EndSARS, Robbed, Killed Two #PoS Operators –Suspects

Seven members of a gang that allegedly specialises in robbery and kidnapping in Abia State are cooling off their heels in the custody of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team.

Suspected PoS robbers

The suspects, Basil Macdonald, Emeka Uche, Godwin Rafael, Uzoma Samuel, Sunday Chibuike, Godwin Kalu and Abraham Thompson, were apprehended in their various hideouts in Aba town.

City Round learnt that detectives went after them following the murder of two point of sale operators, Ezinne Iroh and Dr Victor Chimaobi, in the town. The gang reportedly killed Iroh on January 31, 2021 after robbing her of N150,000 while Chimaobi was murdered on January 21.

The assailants who operated in tricycles were also said to have killed one of their kidnap victims, Achinulo Ignatius, after collecting N2.5m ransom from his relatives. The 59-year-old man was reportedly abducted on November 1, 2020, at the Osisioma junction, along Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.

In the wake of growing apprehension among PoS operators in the state, our correspondent gathered that the IRT operatives led by DCP Abba Kyari were deployed to track down the gang, leading to Rafael’s arrest. He was said to have led the detectives to apprehend six other members of the gang.

Rafael, 32, from Kogi State, stated that his gang was formed during the #EndSARS protest to cash in on the relaxed police patrols at the time.

The father of two said he was formerly with a robbery gang led by one Handerson, who is a member of Vikings Confraternity, to which he also belongs.

He said, “I was arrested in connection with armed robbery and murder. Henderson always had money on him and whenever I was broke, I went to him for support. On one occasion, he asked me to join his gang and

“When the #EndSARS protest started, I returned to Aba and teamed up with Henderson’s other men to form a new gang. We robbed a PoS operator at a bank close Umugasi area in Aba and collected N52,000 from him. We also went away with the PoS machine. We were three that went for that operation and we used a tricycle and locally-made guns. I got N20,000 as my share.”

Rafael, a secondary school leaver, said their second operation was on Market Road by Kents in Aba, where Chimaobi was reportedly killed, adding that he shot the victim because he pushed one of his gang members, Chibuike.

He said, “The man died on the spot. I got N7,000 as my share in that operation because we were five that went for it. When I heard that the man was dead, I went to a drop the money at a T-junction and prayed for forgiveness. I vowed not to rob again but few weeks later, my gang members and I went to visit a friend along Ukgwu Street in Ogbor Hill.

“One of us called Santiago suggested that we should rob a PoS woman who was on the street. I objected because I am well known in that area. Santiago and Chibuike went for the operation. They robbed the woman and shot her. They collected N150,000 and I got N23,000.

“When we got home, we heard news that the woman was dead. We fought with Santiago for killing the woman and he told us that the woman struggled with him. I used the money to travel to Abuja where I spent two weeks. I was arrested when I returned to Aba.”

Chibuike, 22, claimed that he joined the gang because he lost his job after the #EndSARS protest, stating that he made N55,000 from five robbery operations he participated in.

He added, “I used part of the money I made to help my mother pay her house rent. It was Rafael who introduced me to the gang.”

Samuel, a polytechnic student, said he joined the gang to raise money for his clearance in school. The 25-year-old native of Abia State also confessed to have been initiated into Vikings Confraternity and robbery by Handerson.

On the robbery operation during which Chimaobi was killed, Samuel refuted Rafael’s claim that the PoS operator struggled with a gang member.

Kalu, 23, said, “I am a generator repairer but I went to robbery operations with the gang. One was at St. Michael area of Aba, where we looted a warehouse containing clothes. After we sold them, I got N17, 000. Then we went for another operation. It was a PoS vendor and I got N8, 000 as my share. Nobody was killed in all the operations I took part in.”

Education: EDD1 Annual Award: Teachers Are Silent Heroes, Says TGPS, Bar. Solarin | AgegePulse Magazine

The Lagos State Education District I, Agege, has held its 14th Annual Merit Award for Teachers with Miss Adefemi Adeola Adedunke of Oke-Odo Senior High School, emerging as the Overall Best Teacher in the District.

Speaking during the event held at the Government Senior College Hall, Agege, the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of Education District I, Mrs. Titilayo Solarin, said teachers' valuable roles in society can not be over-emphasised, describing them as “A special bred of people who have the unusual ability to change lives, ignite us in the most perfect way and mould us into what we are now; they are really our silent heroes”.

Mrs. Solarin explained that the merit award was initiated to ensure and enhance competitiveness and enhanced service delivery among teachers, pointing out that it is also in line with the Lagos State Government's policy of acknowledging and rewarding hard work, dedication, diligence, selflessness and excellence among the workforce.

The TG/PS highlighted some of the parameters considered in choosing the winners as creativity and innovation, mentoring and coaching, management abilities, excellence in contemporary scholarship of teaching and quality of examination outcomes.

“No nation can move forward and no system can succeed without great educators and administrators behind them, hence the reason for celebrating the great achievers that have gone the extra mile to achieve various feats”, she said.

Solarin also implored the teachers not to rest on their oars in ensuring quality education for students in the District.

In his remarks, Mr. Oluyinka Ogundimu, Chairman, House Committee on Establishment and Training, Lagos State House of Assembly, stressed that the essence of the award is to recognise staff personal contribution to the education pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S. Agenda, noting that no Award can fully compensate the teachers’ sacrifices and impacts on the lives of the students and society as a whole.

Ogundimu urged teachers to understand the sensitivity of their roles, even as he tasked them to look beyond examination grades but also focus on inculcating values in their students to save society from future waste of resources.

His words: “The teaching profession is both dangerous and critical because it involves human lives and the consequences of mismanaging this role may never be reversed. It is essential for the teachers to look beyond excellent examination results, and concentrate on inculcating values that would ensure that the students become respectable members of the society in future”.

He also appreciated the contributions of other stakeholders such as the Chairman, Orile-Agege Local Government Development Council, Mr. Sunday Babatunde, parents and the Old Students Associations for their efforts and visible impact on the schools in the district.

Abubakar Malami (SAN), Attorney-General and Minister of Justice on Tuesday said he never instructed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC ) and Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to institute a fresh case against Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos state and national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tinubu, Malami

“The office of the Attorney-General as you rightly know has not filed any action before any court in the land relating to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. But then within the context of the law, as you rightly know, the EFCC and Code of Conduct Bureau are all statutory bodies that are vested with statutory powers to act within the context of the laws establishing them”.

“So, I am not in a position to give you a precise answer and I will suggest to you that you may consider inviting the chairman of EFCC or perhaps the chairman of Code of Conduct for elaborate answers associated with those charges if any has been filed by those agencies”.

“ I am not here in a representative capacity to speak for them neither in a defensive capacity for them. I will suggest you invite the heads of the agencies to shed more light”.

“But the office of the Attorney General and its arm which is the Director of Public Prosecution has not initiated any proceeding and no investigation has commenced at its instance from any of its agencies be it EFCC or Code of Conduct” he said.

FG Tasks NSCDC On School Security | AgegePulse Magazine

The Federal Government has charged the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to immediately develop a robust scheme for school protection across the country in order to ensure the safety of children everywhere, especially within the school environs, from the incessant attacks by kidnappers and armed men.

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola gave the charge on Monday, 1 March, 2021 in his Office in Abuja when he decorated Ahmed Abubakar Audi as the new Commandant- General of the NSCDC.

According to him, “children are a specially protected social category. They are innocent and at the same time vulnerable. They are as vulnerable to external circumstances as to their own wiles”.

Aregbesola who expressed sadness over the incessant spate of violations and kidnappings in schools urged the NSCDC to continue to work in synergy with other security agencies with a view to immediately restore peace and security in the country, particularly within the school environment.

In his speech titled “Your moment to be a Hero”, the Minister reminded the new Commandant-General that he is mounting the saddle of this great organization at a very critical time in our dear nation with challenging security situations.

He therefore informed him that it is going to be rough but that, as a motivational speaker once wrote, it is great challenges that produces heroes and men of history and thus advised him that he should continue to navigate diligently and triumphantly taking cognisance of the rigorous selection process that brought him into office, so as to ensure that he delivers on the mandate of the NSCDC in line with the policy thrust of the President Muhammadu Buhari Administration.

Ogbeni Aregbeslola further charged the leadership of the corps to develop a robust scheme that would not only check the menace in the schools, but also ensure the protection of critical national assets, such as pipelines, electricity pylons, stations and cables, telecommunication mast, cables and installations.

“Another scheme, like the Agro Rangers, should also be developed to cover full agriculture and offer protection to all categories of farmers. Protecting crop farmers and pastoralists is a matter of national food security”, he said.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Interior, Dr. Shuaib Belgore assured that the Ministry will continue to support the agencies under it to ensure that they deliver on their respective mandates which is the provision of internal security and citizenship integrity.

In his response, the new Commandant-General, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ahmed Abubakar Audi assured that the Corps under his watch, will among others, improve on institutional wellness and also leverage on proactive intelligence gathering in its operations, as this would bring to a barest minimum the asymmetric war now going on in the country.

The Commandant-General thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for giving him the opportunity to serve and commended his administration for its avowed commitment to the safety of lives and property. He pledged the NSCDC’s total commitment to the realization of its mandate.

Jubilation As Sanwo-Olu Unveils Pen Cinema FlyOver | AgegePulse Magazine

…Tinubu: ‘I’m Proud, Sanwo-Olu Has Shown Excellent Results’

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu flanked by Gov. Sanwo-Olu and Obasa at theach official opening of Pen Cinema Bridge

…Five Arterial Roads Network Completed In Agege, Also Commissioned

The long-sought relief from choking vehicular gridlocks has finally come the way of residents in the Agege-Abule Egba axis of Lagos State. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday, unveiled Pen Cinema Bridge and five arterial road networks in the area, formally opening the infrastructure for public use.

The commissioning marked fulfilment of another campaign promise made by Sanwo-Olu to residents, who daily endured pain in commuting within the axis in the last four years.

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had the honour to inaugurate the projects, which he described as “needed catalyst” for the resuscitation of economic activities on the axis.

The construction of the 1.4-kilometre long flyover was part of the recommendation at the Lagos Economic Summit (Ehingbeti) under ex-Governor Babatunde Fashola’s administration, as a strategic intervention to achieving significant traffic improvement in the densely populated area. The last administration created the right-of-way and set up the structural beams; Governor Sanwo-Olu substantially completed civil works on the bridge.

The imposing overpass ascends from Oba Ogunji Road and drops at Oke Koto area of Agege. The bridge also opens to the old Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway through Abule Egba.

Tumultuous crowd of joyous residents joined Gov. Sanwo-Olu and members of the State’s cabinet in handing over the bridge for public use.

The Governor described the delivery of the project as a “landmark progress” in the State Government’s drive towards eliminating bottlenecks causing suffocating gridlocks and relieving residents of stress associated with commuting on roads.

Sanwo-Olu said the two-pronged approach, which his administration deployed to deliver critical infrastructure, gave priority to continuation and completion of strategic projects, regular maintenance and construction of new ones in line with the State’s Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP).

He said his Government decided to continue the project, because it was in tune with the first pillar of his administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda, which targets the provision of roads for expedited economic growth and seamless mobility.

He said: “I am delighted to stand before Lagosians today to celebrate the delivery of this landmark project, which again, reflects our administration’s belief in the principle of continuity in governance and demonstrates our commitment to the urgency of infrastructure development and the welfare of our people. The completion of this flyover and five network of roads sends a strong message about our determination to accelerate our futuristic vision for a world class transportation system complemented by a good network of roads for social and economic transformation.

“In order to address the challenge of huge traffic burden, the immediate past administration initiated and commenced the construction of a precast and pre-stressed reinforced concrete of 1.4km dual-carriage flyover and ramp, with road works across the Agege-Pen Cinema Intersection. As of May 2019 when this administration was inaugurated, this project was at about 20 per cent progress. With the delivery of this bridge, which is complemented with traffic signalisation and drainage channels, we have resolved the perennial traffic arising from huge human and vehicular movement from Agege-Pen Cinema Intersection towards Abule Egba, Fagba, Oke Koto and Iyana Ipaja.”

To achieve a quick turnaround in commuting on the bridge, Sanwo-Olu disclosed that his Government identified and reconstructed five strategic arterial roads with good connectivity to adjoining roads that could serve as alternative bypasses to other routes in periods of heavy traffic.

The Governor said since road transportation remained crucial to economic growth and physical development, he believed the project would inject more life into socio-economic activities of people living and doing business in the area.

He said: “A key outcome from the strategic execution of this magnificent Pen Cinema Flyover project is that our administration has again demonstrated the priority it accords to the wellbeing of our people. It is a true test of our commitment to the Greater Lagos vision and a reflection of the achievability of our audacious socio-economic goals. In the course of implementing this project, we created jobs for about 380 people including engineers, supervisors, artisans and others- a clear indicator of the nexus between infrastructure development and employment generation.”

Sanwo-Olu pledged that his administration would not relent in provision of infrastructure for coordinated and sustainable development that would help to improve the State’s performance on the Ease of Doing Business index.

Tinubu expressed confidence in Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, noting that the Governor had stabilised and brought Lagos back on a focused journey, despite economic turbulence occasioned by Coronavirus (COVID-19) and coordinated destruction of the State’s assets.

The APC National Leader, who described Sanwo-Olu as “a brilliant captain”, praised the collaboration between the executive and the legislative arms in the State.

He said: “This is a commendable achievement by Sanwo-Olu, who has further brought Lagos on the path of progress, given the economic resuscitation this infrastructure will bring on this axis and entire Lagos. May you continue to think and perform to demonstrate excellent results as you have done today.”

Special Adviser to the Governor on Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Aramide Adeyoye, said the axis on which the flyover is sited is one of the busiest in vehicular activities in Lagos, saying the bridge would bring back convenience to millions of residents commuting in the area.

She said: “The entire project consists of a dual carriageway, with a bridge component of two lanes with 3.65 cm width in either direction. The road component consists of service lanes on either side of the bridge with median, kerbs and walkways that are complete with signalised traffic system. There are junction improvements with LED streetlight features.”

Speaker, Lagos House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, who represents Agege in the Assembly, described Governor Sanwo-Olu as “a proactive, wonderful performer”, who always accomplishes any projects he promises.

The adjoining roads commissioned with the flyover are Iju Road, Oba Ogunji Road, Agunbiade Road, Oke Koto Intersection and Iyana Ipaja link road.

A Lagos State High Court has barred Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, the daughter of All Progressives Congress leader, Bola Tinubu, from imposing levies on traders at the Computer Village, Lagos.

The development comes over a year after Tinubu-Ojo, who is also the Iyaloja-General of Lagos State reportedly imposed leaders on the traders who then introduced new levies, a development which sparked a series of protests at the Computer Village.

Others who were similarly barred from imposing levies include: Mrs. Bisola Azeez, Mr. Adeniyi Olasoji, Nofiu Akinsanya, Tony Ikani and the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State.

Iyaloja-General, Folashade Tinubu, Ojo

The order is sequel to a fundamental human rights suit marked ID/9039MFHR/19 instituted against the five respondents by the five major stakeholders that represent the traders at the Computer Village.

The stakeholders representing the traders include: The Registered Trustees of Computer and Allied Products Dealers Association of Nigeria; Registered Trustees of Phone and Allied Product Dealers Association of Nigeria; and Registered Trustees of Phone Parts and Accessories Dealers Association of Nigeria.

Other applicants include: the Registered Trustees of Association of Caterers, Food and Drinks Vendors of Ogunbiyi Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos; Registered Trustees of Ikeja Books, Stationeries and Computer Association and Azeez Olunrin.

The judgment, which was delivered by Justice Yetunde Pinheiro read in part, “I find that the 2nd and 3rd respondents’ imposition of levies on the applicants is illegal, null and void and therefore amounts to a violation of their fundamental rights.

“Accordingly, it is hereby ordered as thus: The first to fifth respondents by themselves, agents, levy collectors howsoever called are restrained from imposing levies and/or fines on the members of the 1st to 5th applicants at the Ikeja Computer Village in the Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State.”

In a letter titled, ‘Dear members, Our Court Victory against Iyaloja and Babaloja and Others in Computer Village, Ikeja’, the leadership of the Computer Village rejoiced over the judgment.

In the letter signed by its Chairman and Secretary-General, Timi Famoroti and Jerry Mba respectively, members were asked not to pay tax to Tinubu’s daughter or her representatives.

It read in part, “The implications of this landmark judgement is that the Iyaloja General, Chief Mrs. Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, Mrs. Bisola Azeez, And Mr. Olasoji Adeniyi or their representatives or agents cannot collect any form of dues, levies or fines from the members of Ikeja Computer Village Market. Any collection in this regard is illegal.

“We therefore urge you not to submit yourself to any form of payment, intimidation and extortion. It is your right to defend yourself and report to your leaders in case there is a violation of your fundamental human rights.

“Please ensure you document with concrete evidence and report any breach of your right to your leaders. This will help our legal action/s against any violators when necessary. We therefore urge every member to continue to pay your agreed dues to your various associations accordingly.”

Traders were also advised to pay their personal and company income, taxes, levies and others to the appropriate government agencies at the national, state and local governments when due.

LASRERA Solicits Support Of Real Estate Professionals To Curb Unethical Practices | AgegePulse Magazine

The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Housing, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, has appealed to practitioners in the real estate sector and the general public to join hands with the State Government to eliminate unethical practices in the real estate industry in order to ensure that perpetrators of dubious acts are dealt with in accordance with relevant provisions of the Law.

SA, Toke-Benson

Benson-Awoyinka, delivering her keynote address as the Special Guest of Honour at the Alphacrux Real Estate Outlook Conference held virtually on Thursday, highlighted the efforts and activities of the State Government in the real estate sector, maintaining that if integrity is restored to the profession, more international investments would be attracted to the country and would be beneficial to many individuals in the State.

She insisted that the Real Estate Market must be transparent for investors to show interest in the sector, stressing that the economic growth of any nation depends on the combined efforts of various individual business ventures, institutions, public and private bodies.

Appreciating the organisers of the event for recognising the efforts of the administration of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu as it relates to Real Estate activities in the State, Benson-Awoyinka stated that the giant strides made by LASRERA within a short period is yielding the expected results, one of which is the increased awareness about the office.

Speaking on the relationship between LASRERA and the regulatory bodies in the real estate business, the Special Adviser said, “I am always quick to make this clarification at every gathering that involves relevant stakeholders in the built sector, that LASRERA was not established to assume the position of the existing professional regulatory bodies for Real Estate practitioners, rather, the agency intends to work with existing regulatory bodies to sanitise the sector.

“Basically, LASRERA came into being as a response to reported cases of fraudulent practices in the real estate sector. Constitutionally, the government exists for the purpose of protecting lives and property; it would be insensitive on the part of the government to ignore thousands of Lagosians who have at one time or the other fell victims to these fraudulent practices”, she stated.

The Special Adviser averred that real estate remains an investment asset of choice and warned that buyers should be careful where they are investing their money in order to avoid unpalatable stories.

While citing the different initiatives from LASRERA, she expressed the hope that reported cases of fraudulent practices will be curtailed and genuine Practitioners will be able to render quality services to members of the public seeking real estate property within the State.

Alphacrux Real Estate Outlook Conference is an annual gathering of industry experts, developers, economists, and investors in the built industry to network, learn, share knowledge and discuss the business year.
