President Tinubu meets Lagos Lawmakers, liken Obasa's impeachment to a coup

By Tayo Aderinola

President Bola Tinubu is reported to have given his tacit approval for the removal of Hon. Mudasiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following his impeachment by 32 out of the 40-member Assembly last week.

The lawmakers cited alleged infractions, including corruption and highhandedness, as reasons for Obasa’s removal.

In a closed-door meeting in Abuja on Wednesday evening, President Tinubu convened with the Assembly’s new leadership, including the newly elected Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, and members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC).

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, and the ousted Speaker Obasa were notably absent from the meeting, although Obasa was reportedly in Abuja.

Sources indicated that President Tinubu expressed discontent with the manner in which the lawmakers conducted the impeachment, drawing a parallel to a coup.

However, following entreaties from GAC leaders and acknowledgement of Obasa’s alleged transgressions, Tinubu begrudgingly endorsed the Assembly’s Lagosians

Speaker Meranda, on her part, pledged to prioritize transparency, inclusion, and good governance in her leadership, ensuring the effective delivery of democratic dividends to Lagosians.

How I'Ve Impacted My Constituents, Agege In Recent Time- Hon. Dr. Wale Ahmed

Yomi Durojaye

...Extols President Tinubu Led Administration

The House of Representatives' Agege Constituency is represented by Dr. Wale Ahmed, a former lawmaker, two-time commissioner, and former secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State. He discussed his involvement in the National Assembly, the Tinubu administration, and other topics.

In the 2023 presidential election, Nigerians made informed choices and cast informed ballots, and I want to start by making that clear.

The past few years have undoubtedly been extremely difficult, demanding, and rewarding for the nation because Nigerians elected a seasoned politician who is a full-blooded democrat, a champion of democracy, and a fair-minded man of vision and inspiration. He is clearly well-suited to the role of providing direction and focus to this vastly diverse nation.

God had prepared President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for this moment. He is undoubtedly leading with a decent heart, possessing the necessary national perspective, and bringing the nation together by implementing a just and equitable administration that has everyone on board.

I can see demonstrable courage and boldness, a rare clarity of thought and wisdom, as he is mobilising every segment of the society for nation building. He has been decisive in taking certain steps and difficult decisions in the overall national interest, thereby laying a good, solid foundation for greater tomorrow and future prosperity.

President Bola Tinubu presides over a government of reforms.  His reforms and innovations fall within the framework of indepth socio-economic restructuring, which, fundamentally, comes with transcient pains, the types that will predictably herald a new lease of life for the generality of Nigerians, both now and in the future. For example, under his leadership, Nigeria’s revenue base has ballooned and strengthened exponentially, translating in the lower sub-units, that is states and local governments, now having much more funds to channel into their developmental priorities.

There is now a lot of fiscal discipline and financial loopholes are removed. I also salute his focus on grassroots governance as exemplified by the financial autonomy to the councils, which will foster development at the grassroots level.

On his constituency activities,  Dr. Wale spoke with confidence on his office has transformed the face of Agege Federal Constituency...

....I will like to put it this way. It is difficult to start counting or enumerating the way I have impacted on our people Agege Federal Constituency. I practically live with them. So, I am able to rise to the occasion and responde to their needs. To be specific, I will start with our educational programme.

Two days ago, we identified those young people who just gained admission into the university . No fewer than 50 of them were given scholarship. We will be encouraging and mentoring them.

Before that, we looked at our environment and discovered that not all of them would go to the university or Polytechnic. We trained 150 of young people in various vocations and during graduation, we gave them money to go and start business, to buy equipment. Recently, we did a medical outreach for three days. It was so successful,  so helpful. As a matter of fact, since then, they have been asking for more.

In Agege, we are known for our markets and Agege bread.  We have provided solar powered street lights to increase after hour business activities and security, and solar powered boreholes. We presented flours to Master Bakers Association in Agege in aid of their business. We also gave market men and women food items and financial empowerment.

The distribution of foodstuffs to all and sundry has been virtually an every month affair. I am at home virtually every weekend. I am always with my constituents. Other assistance, as the need arise, we do that regularly.

We must prioritize the supply of water in the upcoming year. I educate them of our beloved President Asiwaju Tinubu's enormous accomplishments. The average person in Agege is aware that the macroeconomic indicators that indicate the president's policies—such as the decline in inflation, the strengthening and stability of the naira, the increase in foreign reserves, and the decrease in fuel prices—will soon result in lower landing costs for meals at their table. In other words, there is hope for the future and my people in Agege have faith in this government.

"This sector remains a focus of the Lagos State Government's investment and development efforts. As such, the present administration is committed to achieving a water-safe city that guarantees access to clean water for all residents", he said.

He maintained that the Water Treatment plant project is expected to run for 36 months, and it will put an end to the scarcity of pipe-borne water in various communities in Lagos State.

The Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation, Engr.  Muktar Tijani, in his remarks, commended the level of interest of the Commissioner and management in the affairs of the corporation.

He reiterated that all the concerns raised with him by the consultant on the project had been adequately addressed by the Commissioner during the tour.

Amongst those who accompanied the Commissioner were the Special Adviser on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu; Permanent Secretaries, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Gaji Omobolaji and Office of Drainage Services, Engr. Mahmood Adegbite; Executive Director of Operations and Lagos Water Corporation, Engr. Lanke Taiwo, among others.

The Profile of First Female Speaker in Lagos, Rt Hon Mojisola Lasbat Meranda - A Trailblazing Leader in Lagos Politics

By Ayodele Ifasakin

Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda

Rt Hon Mojisola Lasbat Meranda is the newly sworn-in Speaker of the 10th Lagos State House of Assembly, a role that attests to her rise as a formidable force in Lagos politics. First elected to represent Apapa Constituency-1 in 2015, she has been re-elected twice, in 2019 and 2023, cementing her reputation as a dedicated public servant and advocate for her constituents.

Before her ascension as Speaker, Mrs Meranda served as the Deputy Speaker and Chief Whip of the 9th Assembly, where she demonstrated strong leadership and legislative acumen. Her journey into politics is deeply rooted in her heritage as a Lagos blue blood. Born on August 16, 1980, to the family of the late Chief T. A. Lawal Akapo, the Ojora of Lagos, and Princess M. A. Lawal-Akapo, she hails from prominent royal families, including Ojora, Aromire, Onitana, Oloto, and Oniru. Her father, a former legislator and traditional ruler, and her brother, Oba AbdulWasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, the Oniru of Iru land, have inspired her lifelong commitment to public service.

Mrs Meranda’s educational journey began at St. Charles Nursery and Primary School and Randle Primary School, Surulere. She continued at Lagos Anglican Girls Grammar School and Ansar-Ud-Deen Secondary School, where she distinguished herself as a leader. Her academic achievements include a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from Lagos State University in 2013 and ongoing studies at the University of Lagos. Additionally, she holds an advanced certificate in software development, showcasing her versatility and commitment to lifelong learning.

Her career spans both the public and private sectors. She gained valuable experience as a procurement manager in the oil and gas industry with Cirrus Nigeria Limited and later as Head of Operations at Worthline International Services Limited. Her early political career included high-profile roles in Apapa Local Government, such as Senior Special Assistant on Intervention and Intergovernmental Affairs and Supervisory Councillor for Health.

As a legislator, Mrs Meranda has emphasised the importance of refining existing laws to align with modern realities. Rather than focusing solely on new bills, she has advocated for repealing and amending outdated laws to ensure proper enforcement and relevance. Beyond legislative work, her impact is evident in her constituency projects, which include medical outreaches, providing JAMB forms, training automobile mechanics, furnishing schools, constructing water projects, and empowering petty traders and widows.

A staunch advocate for gender equality, she has called for fair representation of women in politics. “We all contested for the same offices,” she has remarked, challenging societal biases against women in leadership. Her political journey, characterised by determination and grassroots connection, inspires women aspiring to leadership roles.

Mrs Meranda’s leadership style reflects her resilience and dedication to service. She firmly believes that power is earned, not given, and her story exemplifies the rewards of perseverance. “Power is not served à la carte,” she often states, highlighting the hard work, networking, and strategic campaigning that have defined her political career.

As one of only four women in the 40-member Lagos State House of Assembly, Mrs Meranda’s role as Speaker is both a personal milestone and a symbolic victory for women in Nigerian politics. Her vision for Lagos is one of inclusivity, progress, and empowerment, ensuring that every citizen, regardless of gender, has a voice in shaping the state's future

Lagos State Ministry of Tourism Clears the Air On Incident At J.K Randle

Yomi Durojaye

The attention of the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism , Arts, and Culture has been drawn to a viral video circulating on social media regarding an incident at the J.K. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History. It is imperative to set the records straight and clarify the events that led to the said video.

The Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka has the statutory responsibility of oversight over all facilities under the Ministry’s purview. In line with this mandate, she embarked on an inspection visit to the J.K. Randle Centre.

During the inspection, it was discovered that the Centre Director , Qudus Onikeku, was illegally operating a canteen within the premises without the knowledge and approval of the Ministry. This prompted Mrs Benson-Awoyinka to question the presence of the establishment and initiated an eviction which the Centre Director violently resisted and had his team attack officials of the Ministry.

The non-state actors who are neither recognized by the Lagos State Government nor authorized to attend the meeting, who accompanied the Center Director, barged in, while he ordered them to record the proceedings. This, the Honourable Commissioner objected to. It must be emphasized that recording any meeting without the consent of the presiding authority is unacceptable and a breach of protocol.

For clarity,  Mrs Benson Awoyinka did not assault anyone, instead a senior female member of her team was physically assaulted by the non state actors which then escalated as seen in the viral video depicting a totally false narrative. The video posted ostensibly to blackmail her speaks for itself.

The Honourable Commissioner  maintained her stance that unauthorized persons should not participate in the meeting or record its discussions, which is in line with standard administrative procedures.

An investigation has been ordered into the occurrence and appropriate actions would be taken.

The Ministry remains committed to upholding transparency, accountability, and the efficient management of all its facilities. The Honourable Commissioner will continue to discharge her duties in the best interest of Lagos State and its citizens.

We urge members of the public to disregard any misrepresentation of the incident and focus on the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to excellence in service delivery.
