Coup: Gabon Military Officers Claim Power, Say Election Lacked Credibility

A group of senior military officers has gone on national television in Gabon saying they have seized power because elections held over the weekend were not credible.

The officers, appearing on Gabon24 in the early hours of Wednesday morning, said they had cancelled the elections, dissolved all state institutions and closed the country’s borders.

They said they represented all security and defence forces of Gabon.

The announcement came shortly after the state election body said President Ali Bongo Ondimba had won a third term in office in Saturday’s disputed elections.

“In the name of the Gabonese people … we have decided to defend the peace by putting an end to the current regime,” the officers said.

The Gabonese Election Centre said Bongo had secured 64.27 percent of the vote compared with 30.77 percent for his main challenger Albert Ondo Ossa, after a process beset by delays.

Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi, reporting from Kenya, said that “there are lots of uncertainties” surrounding the military action.

“There is a lot of tension as well. They [military leaders] are claiming that the government has not been respecting the will of the Gabonese people for so many years and they say that has to change,” said Soi.

On Saturday, the opposition camp said the election was a “fraud orchestrated by Ali Bongo and his supporters” after the internet was cut and a curfew imposed. French media outlets France 24, RFI and TV5 Monde were also banned, accused of “a lack of objectivity and balance … in connection with the current general elections”, the government said.

President Bongo was the candidate for the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), the party founded by his father, Omar Bongo, who led Gabon from 1967 to 2009. After his death, his son, then the defence minister, took his place as president and has been in power ever since.

“We have no idea where President Bongo is. The military did not say where the president is. Things are moving very fast,” reported Soi.

Contact Me Only When Your State PRO Fails You, Force PRO Urges, Nigerians React

The Police Force Public Relations Officer, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has urged Nigerians to engage their state PPROs more and should only contact him if these representatives fail them.

This was contained in a statement released Tuesday on his official X, formerly Twitter, account.

"Take note of these numbers. They might save you or others.

"Also, you are urged to always engage your PROs in all cases. It's when they fail you or disappoint you before you reach out to me.

"It is not possible I attend to thousands of calls and messages every day. No way. Thanks," Adejobi captioned the image containing contacts of all 36 states' PROs.

Rejected Nominees: We Can't Be Intimidated, Lagos Assembly Declares

- says there are plans to attack Speaker Obasa, lawmakers

- says no rift between Governor and Speaker

Sanwo-Olu and Obasa

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday revealed that there are plans by some people to attack Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and other lawmakers over the recent screening and rejection of some cabinet nominees sent by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The House, however, said its action concerning the nominees was in tandem with the constitution, which stipulates its responsibilities and, as such, would not succumb to threats and intimidations, including planned sponsored protests and analysis by some civil society groups and activists.

It also said it had refrained itself from revealing all that it discovered during the screening of the nominees while warning that "those who live in glass houses should be conscious not to throw stones."

"Before today, I had been reliably informed of the plan to attack the Speaker based on the decision of the House concerning the nominees of the Governor, particularly the rejected ones," Dr. Obasa said during plenary adding that he had been inundated with calls from people and members of the House.

The Speaker stressed that the House does not have any fight with Sanwo-Olu or the executive arm as projected by some people, who may not be aware of the actual reasons for the rejection of the nominees.

"There is this erroneous belief that we are waging war against the Governor. There is no basis for me and the House to fight the Governor. I will continue to say that the Governor is a brother and colleague in the Lagos project and service to the people of our State.

"The Governor and I have been around in the system for long. While he was SA to the former Deputy Governor, Femi Pedro, I was in this House as chairman, Committee on Rural Development. He was SA on Establishment and Pensions and I was chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts (Local Governments). While he was heading LSDPC, I was chairman, Committee on Economic Planning and Budget. Then, I became the Speaker and when he became the Governor, I remained the Speaker. So it's been a long journey together.

"But I wonder why anytime the House says no to a particular request of the Governor, it is taken by some people to mean there is a fight with the Governor. This House has passed so many resolutions that the executive arm refused to carry out, but people don't see that as something to talk about and the House does not raise eyebrows. So I don't know what brings the erroneous belief that the House is fighting the Governor, who is our brother and who we will continue to work with.

"However, we have a constitutional responsibility. Just as the Governor has the responsibility to inform the House about his nominees, the House has the responsibility to say 'yes' or 'no' which we have exercised by confirming some and denying some and we have our reasons for saying 'no' to some of the nominees.

"The House, as a body, has refrained itself from exposing what it discovered during the screening exercise and we are not going to be forced to spill to the public," Dr. Obasa said.

Concerning the rejection of Prof. Akin Ababyomi, former health commissioner, Obasa said considerations went beyond his efforts in the fight against COVID-19 which he described as an isolated issue in the challenged health sector of the State.

"Before Prof. Abayomi, there were Leke Pitan, Dr. Jide Idris and others. COVID-19 was an isolated case that was considered. Before COVID-19, we had Ebola which was also taken care of under Babatunde Fashola.

"Beyond all these, we are the representatives of the people, their mouthpieces, eyes and ears. The health sector of Lagos is not just about COVID-19. We have general hospitals and other health care centres around the State. What can be said about them?

"Before Engineer Aramide Adeyoye, we also had Engineer Ganiyu Johnson and Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as Commissioner for Works and under whom the Ikoyi-Victoria Island link bridge was built while Babatunde Fashola was Governor. Under Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as Governor, there was masaive infrastructural development too.

"So we must stop making allusions concerning somethings we do not understand. They mentioned the former c

Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho and his experience. But how about actions in office?" Obasa asked.

The Speaker added that as a politician whose party is in power, the priority of those in government should be the interest of the people.

He urged those planning to sponsor actions against the House to realise that protests and sponsored articles would not make the House rescind its decision.

"The civil society that is threatening to protest should do so because it is a constitutional right. But we are not going to be threatened or intimidated. We have said no, but if there is a convincing or germane reason for us to reverse our decision, we will, but not by threats.

"It is because we are successful as politicians that is why the technocrats are being appointed. And to our own estimation, if they have not done well, we have right to say no and we have said no.

"We don't want instigations and conflicts, the executive and the House are working together; we are brothers and colleagues; we will continue to work together but we need to caution fourth columnists not to instigate crisis. And those that are living in glass houses need to be careful," he warned.

NURTW crisis: Agbede, Balogun of Agege Kingdom appointed acting president at Abuja conference

The vice president of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, has been appointed as the union’s acting president.

Agbede, Baruwa

His appointment was announced on Sunday at an emergency delegate conference in Abuja.

A similar conference was held last week in Nasarawa State, where Tajudeen Baruwa was returned as the union’s president.

But after the Tajudeen Baruwa-led executive committee was declared dissolved on Sunday following what was described as the expiration of its tenure, Kayode Agbeyangi, who took over as the acting general secretary, announced the composition of a caretaker committee. He said this was to avoid a vacuum in the union’s leadership.

Agbeyangi said the caretaker committee would organise a proper delegate conference in a few months.

He said the Abuja conference had representatives from all the federation states in attendance, unlike the one held last week in Nasarawa that returned Tajudeen Baruwa as president.

Agbede, in his acceptance speech, promised to right all the wrongs of Baruwa while in office.

Describing his emergence as a new beginning in the history of the union, he said: “The last four years of the former president has been a total waste in the history of our union: no development. He destroyed all the legacies handed over to him by his predecessor, Alhaji Najeem Yasin. Our union was always in the news throughout his four-year tenure for bad reasons.

One major problem created by the former president was the illegal suspension and expulsion of members without genuine reasons. He destroyed our union, especially in the South West zone.

“I, on behalf of the caretaker committee, leaders, elders and members of our great union, hereby, lift the illegal suspension and expulsion of our esteemed members across the federation.

“To all our members in various states who have been forced to join the parks and garage management committee, I urge everyone to return home to the union.

We shall be visiting all the state governments in the affected states to return the union activities in the affected state councils.

“To our elders and former leaders, this is your administration. All the welfare packages for elders under Yasin will be brought back. To staff and members, your welfare will be given utmost attention.

“Finally, I pray that our union will never again experience the type of maladministration under Baruwa.”

Other members of the caretaker committee are Aliyu Issa Ore, Deputy President; Alhassan Haruna, Treasurer; Uwem James, Financial Secretary; Kayode Agbeyangi, acting General Secretary; Hakeem Adeosun; Ademola Adeoye, Pastor O.D Kalango, Chief M. Ariyo, Saturday Edo, Chief Mathew Asogwa, Garba Musa, Jerome Ukor, Yahaya Ibrahim, Tukur Bichi, Hajiya Rabiat Abubakar, Usman Bagudu, Salisu Dan Aude, Abdulazeez Yawale, Yusuf Haruna, Shaibu Bello, Bala Ibrahim, Salleh Bakurus and Musa Waziri.

I Sold Some Of My Properties To Produce Jagun Jagun, Says Actor Femi Adebayo

By Yomi Fernandez

Ace Nigerian actor and producer Femi Adebayo has opened up on how his faith aided in the production of his hit movie, Jagun Jagun.

Adebayo, while fielding questions from journalists in a video shared on Instagram Wednesday, disclosed that he sold his properties to raise the necessary funds required for the production of the movie.

Femi Adebayo, Jagun Jagun

The actor, also fondly called by his moniker, Jelili, revealed that Jagun Jagun cost billions of naira to produce.

Adebayo revealed that he merged revenues from the sale of his properties and proceeds from the 2022 movie, King Of Thieves (Agbeshinkole), to bring the movie to life.

“Jagun Jagun is a multi-billion naira project and I can’t say the exact amount I spent on it on shooting.

"I used the proceeds of Agbeshinkole to produce Jagun Jagun. I was working on not getting funded by finance houses and individuals.

"At a point, I was out of finance and because I had faith that the project would work, I sold my properties”.

The ace actor also spoke on some of the difficulties encountered during the production of the movie.

“We built from the scratch the warrior school. We were faced with the challenge of purchasing that land, we wanted to own the land. And at a point, we had an agreement and paid for it, but the children of the owner of the land changed their minds about the sale.

"We built the school halfway when the children who came from Lagos told us to stop. They were ready to destroy all that we built and that held us up for almost a week, going to the police station and Obas appealing to them and we were told to only shoot there and not buy it."

On what inspired the movie, Adebayo said, "I wanted to pass across a social message to the youths and wanted to do it culturally."

From Unyielding Authority to Tearful Humility: The Curious Case of Godwin Emefiele

By #adl

In the grand tapestry of life, irony often takes center stage when the most formidable of individuals find themselves humbled by unforeseen circumstances.

Emiefele in Court

Such is the case of Godwin Emefiele, a name that once echoed with resolute authority as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Little did he know that the tables would turn, and he would face the very struggles he once dismissed.

In the final chapter of his tenure, Emefiele launched the "Naira Redesigned Policy," a move that would later be referred to as a journey through the inferno by many Nigerians.

As the nation grappled with the soaring scarcity of naira and the gradual erosion of purchasing power, Emefiele, unyielding and resolute, proclaimed that there was no turning back. The populace's pleas fell upon deaf ears, and as the suffering reached unprecedented heights, some succumbed while others trudged on.

Fast forward to a different time, a different scene—a courtroom bustling with anticipation and heavy security. Emefiele, now a defendant, stood before the bar of justice, the same place where he once wielded power. This time, however, his eyes were pools of tears, a stark contrast to the steely resolve he had displayed not so long ago. The man who had watched, unmoved, as others faced hardship now faced the consequences of his actions.

As he wept and pleaded, a sense of irony hung in the air like a familiar melody. The once-mighty Emefiele, now vulnerable and remorseful, seemed to have experienced a cosmic twist of fate. Those who bore witness to his emotional breakdown couldn't help but recall the days when their cries fell on deaf ears. A sense of poetic justice filled the room, leaving no doubt that the tides of time are a force to be reckoned with.

Emefiele's tears flowed unabated, akin to a baby yearning for his mother's comforting embrace. The courtroom, usually a stage for stern legal battles, became an arena for the spectacle of humanity's capacity to change. The man who had stood tall in the face of adversity was now grappling with his version of it, a reminder that power and prestige are ephemeral.

In this narrative, we find a lesson that transcends borders and circumstances. The tale of Emefiele serves as a poignant reminder that those who wield authority must do so with compassion and empathy, for the wheel of fortune turns, and what goes around truly does come around.

As the chapter of Emefiele's life takes an unexpected turn, it leaves us with a thought-provoking question: Can tears of remorse wash away the sins of the past? Only time will tell.

Enjoy and be happy subsidy or no subsidy.

MUSLIMS PROTEST AGAINST CHRISTIANS DOMINATION ON LAGOS CABINET LIST

 AgegePulse Magazine

Apparently dissatisfied with the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on modes of selecting individuals to form his cabinet members for second term, Muslims across the state have taken to street to kick against it for allegedly marginalizing them in the selection processes in the state.

MUSLIMS PROTEST AGAINST CHRISTIANS DOMINATION ON LAGOS CABINET LIST.

The Muslims, who are demanding a total review of the list, said that the demonstration was against the alleged lopsidedness of the governor’s nominations for commissioners in Lagos.

This demonstration came barely one week after the Muslims raised alarm over alleged marginalization in the composition of individuals expected to assist Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, pilot affairs of the state.

Despite earlier concerned raised by the Muslims for fair representation, 20 out of the 39 commissioners nominated by the governor have so far been screened by the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The demonstration on Wednesday started at about 8.30am when the Muslims stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly complex, to express their grievances against the move by the governor.

The President, Muslim Community of Lagos, Professor Tajudeen Gbadamosi is being joined by leaders of notable Muslim organisations who have been part of the struggle from inception.

They argued that the recent list of 39 commissioner-nominees released by Sanwo-Olu, the Muslims were allegedly treated unfairly.

They were carrying banners and placards with inscriptions such as “Muslims say no to official discrimination,” “All we ask is fairness,” “Stop the Screening Now, we want Justice”, among others.

In the petition read by the President, the Muslims expressed “grievance and dissatisfaction against the blatant disregard for justice, equity and fairness in the proposed Lagos State’ Executive cabinet as contained in the list of commissioner-nominees.

According to the group, the list “is a classic case of discrimination and religious bigotry, as it has 31 nominees who are of the Christian faith and only eight (8) nominees who are Muslims.”

Ondo Bans Unions'/Associations' Activities Over Public Exploitation | AgegePulse Magazine

By Ayodele Ifasakin

Rotimi Akeredolu

The Ondo State Government has taken measures to protect residents in the state amid soaring costs and incessant increases in prices of goods and services by artisans including farm produce and food items.

In this regard, the state government has barred all Trading Unions and Associations under the umbrella of Ondo State United Artisan Group, from fixing and enforcing uniform prices of goods and services being sold/rendered by their members and non-members.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo said the decision was taken in the overall socio-economic interest of the people of the State.

The statement:

"Government had before now, watched with discomfort and dismay, the economic suffocation of the people with unimaginable increases in prices of goods and services in markets, shops and other sales outlets across the state.

"Even without due regard for market forces, it is obvious that associations and unions are largely behind this unwholesome act.

"The state government has decided to act decisively even as the public deserves protection from this undesirable exploitation under some guises.

"Therefore, fixing market prices and imposing fixed exorbitant prices on the people under the guise of association or union must be stopped forthwith.

"Accordingly, as part of the measures, Individuals, Artisans, Traders and providers of services as well as farmers are henceforth allowed to operate, sell their produce and render any service in any part of the state as they may deem profitable, based on the principle of demand and supply and prevailing market forces. This is just as membership of associations and unions remains voluntary as provided for in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

"Consequently, Government's right to regulate the activities of Trading Associations and Artisan groups has to be invoked in the interest of residents. Therefore, on no account should any Union/Association fix or enforce prices of goods and services.

"Similarly, there shall be no sale of tickets to Artisans/Traders by any Association/Union without due approval of the state Government through the Internal Revenue Service”.

"All concerned are, therefore, advised to adhere strictly to this directive as any person or group found to be flouting it will be made to face the full weight of the extant laws.

"It is to be noted too that this directive takes effect from TODAY in all markets and sales outlets across the 18 LGAs of the state".

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) has warned that the price of a cow could go up as high as N2 million if the Lagos State Government passes the proposed anti-open grazing law.

The association’s zonal secretary for South-West, Maikudi Usman, made the disclosure on Wednesday during a one-day public hearing organised by the state House of Assembly on the anti-open grazing bill.

Mr Usman said ranching, as being proposed by the government, was capital intensive and his members could not afford it.

“If cattle are bred in one place, the price could go up to about two million naira each. W

e agreed with some local chiefs in other states that anyone who wants to rear cows in a location should register and should indicate when he is leaving,” he disclosed.

The Miyetti Allah leader added that the best way to breed cattle was to move them from one place to another, saying that they were moved to different places during the rainy and dry season.

“Our breeders are not used to breeding cattle in one place.

They move from here to another place.

When we say we will keep cattle in one place, the owner of the cattle will not have funds to feed the animals in one place.

Making further excuses, Mr Usman pleaded with the government for more time to enlighten herdsmen on breeding cattle in one place rather than encroaching on farmlands.

“We are pleading with the Lagos State government to give us more time to go tell our people and train them how they will be breeding cattle in one place and not encroach on farmers’ land,” he said.

Mr Usman further urged the state government to subsidise the cost of raising the animals in one location.

He detached his group from criminal herdsmen that have been destroying people’s farm among other criminal activities such as armed robbery and kidnapping.

“A Fulani man moves from one place to another to ply his trade, but we have some bad eggs that are fomenting trouble.

The government should allow us to tell our people that they don’t want our cows to destroy people’s farmlands,” he pleaded.

“We have met with stakeholders in Ekiti, Ondo and even Oyo States and we reached agreements with them.”

In his own remarks the president of the Lagos State Sheep Farmers Association, Mustapha Ibrahim, said that the bill was not meant to attack anybody, but that it was all-embracing.

Mr Ibrahim noted that land resources were very important to the state, adding that the relationship between cattle herders and farmers should be symbiotic.

He also called for legislation to promote the creation of farm estates across the state.

Also, chairman of Lagos State Butchers Association, Alabi Kazeem, urged the assembly to support the cattle breeders as breeding cattle in one location could be expensive.

Anti-Grazing Bill: Stakeholders commend Lagos Assembly | AgegePulse Magazine

-Obasa says bill is intended to ensure peaceful co-existence

- Myetti Allah pleads for assistance from Lagos state government

By Ayodele Ifasakin

Eshilokun

Many stakeholders at a public hearing held at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Wednesday, agreed that prohibition of open cattle grazing was the best way for the state to ensure security of lives and property.

This was as the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. (Dr) Mudashiru Obasa, said the bill was intended to create an atmosphere that would encourage peaceful co-existence among residents.

Obasa, who was represented by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Wasiu Eshilokun-Sanni, said in his keynote address that it was important to address the issue of cattle rearing, especially as it affects security and other human desires.

The Speaker added that the issues involved with the current ways of cattle rearing and open grazing called for concerted efforts for stability and economic development.

"If there is no security, there will be no peace and development. Farmers/herders clash appears to be the oldest. Both the farmers and herders are critical to food stability.

"Both of them affect our health. Their conflicts lead to insecurity and claim lives and properties. We must engage ourselves to make the right decisions," the Speaker said.

Hon. Kehinde Joseph, chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, in his remark, said that the proposed law was meant to ensure peace between herders and farmers in the state.

According to Joseph, the proposed law is meant to ensure the registration of herders and prohibition cattle roaming.

"It will forestall herders/farmers clashes and redefine social and economic activities in the state.

"Members of cattle breeders association will be sensitised on the new development and we will ensure strict compliance with the law, when it is passed," he said.

Commenting, the President of the Lagos State Sheep Farmers Association, Alhaji Mustapha Ibrahim, described the bill as all-embracing and would ensure a symbiotic relationship between cattle rearers and farmers.

He also advocated for a legislation to promote the creation of farm estates across the state.

However, in his submission, Zonal Secretary of Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association in the South West, Meikudi Usman, appealed to the state government for assistance as he noted that ranching is more expensive than open grazing.

Usman, who agreed that there were some criminally-minded herders, argued that raising a cow in one location could increase the price of a cow to as much as N2 million just as he pleaded with the government to subsidise the cost of raising the cattle in one location.

“We agreed with some local chiefs in other states that anyone who wants to rear cow in a location should register and he should indicate when he is leaving.

"A Fulani man moves from one place to another to play his trade, but we have some bad eggs that are causing trouble. The government should allow us to talk to our people that they don't want our cows to destroy people's farmland.

"We have met with stakeholders in Ekiti, Ondo and even Oyo states and we reached agreements with them," he said.

Chairman of Lagos State Butchers Association of Lagos State, Alhaji Alabi Bamidele Kazeem, also advocated for support to cattle breeders arguing that rearing animals in one location could be expensive.
