Buhari, Ajimobi, Akiolu make last-minute moves to save Ambode

Dayo Oketola, Sesan Olufowobi and Success Nwogu

President Muhammadu Buhari, Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi; and Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, have embarked on a last-minute move to save Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, from an impending loss of the state All Progressives Congress ticket for the 2019 governorship election.

There had been reports that Ambode was no longer in the good books of an APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, which might endanger his second term bid.

But the tension became palpable on Tuesday when two new aspirants under the APC umbrella – Dr Obafemi Hamzat and Jide Sanwoolu – emerged to vie for the governorship ticket with Ambode in the direct party primary billed to come up in two weeks’ time.

Hamzat and Sanwoolu, former commissioners in the state, were said to have claimed to have Tinubu’s backing.

Ambode was also said to have the APC national leader’s backing when he declared intention to go for a second term on Monday.

However, impeccable sources within the ruling party said on Wednesday that the prominent personalities including the President, the monarch and Ajimobi had stepped in to resolve the crisis, noting that the matter would be resolved.

“There are serious moves to end the crisis. Many people, including the President have waded in. And it is not yet too late for the issue to be resolved,” said the source.

“President Buhari, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State and Oba Rilwan Akiolu are making efforts to ensure that the matter is resolved and Ambode’s second term bid is not terminated,” the source added.
Another source said there was no problem between Ambode and his political father, Tinubu, but the governor was believed to have drawn the ire of party leaders and key supporters when he allegedly sidelined them from his administration.

Reminded that many APC members in the state were of the opinion that Ambode might fail to clinch the APC governorship ticket having been abandoned by the 57 local council chairmen in the state, the source said there was no cause for alarm.

He said the President, who was a father to all the APC members, would resolve the logjam.

Another source said the party elders, who were said to have sponsored Sanwoolu, had decided to open discussion on Ambode after pressure from different quarters.

AMBODE, ROLE MODEL TO YOUTHS- BOYS SCOUT CHIEF

...Appoints Lagos Gov Patron, Peace Ambassador

…Gov Unveils Strategic Program To Support Voluntary Youth Organisations

Commissioner of Lagos State Scout Council, Chief Jonathan Tawose on Wednesday conferred the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode as the Patron of Lagos State Council of Scout Association of Nigeria, saying the decision was based on his leadership qualities and being a good role model for the Nigerian youths.

Tawose, who spoke at the investiture of the Governor as Patron of the Scout Council, held at Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, said the Scout Association, as a non-religious and non-political international organization, has the vision to build the youths of today into responsible leaders of tomorrow, adding that it was gratifying to note that Governor Ambode's activities align with the vision to give better tomorrow for young ones.

"We are aware of the Governor's hardwork, dedication and above all total devotion to the emancipation of mankind. The Governor is a model to Nigerian youths with his show of exemplary leadership qualities.

"Once again, we congratulate you (Ambode) most warmly on all your achievements and we must say that the Governor is blessed with good administrators who are assisting him to ensure that Lagos State remains the number one State in Nigeria," Tawose said.

Responding, Governor Ambode seized the occasion to unveil a strategic program to support voluntary youth associations and Non-governmental Organizations with the necessary empowerment to better perform their role to inculcate right virtues and discipline needed to prepare younger ones for leadership.

He said as the bedrock of societal development, it was important for adequate measures to be firmed up to properly train the youths which, according to him, would in turn have positive effect on the nation.

He said: "Let me use this opportunity to urge all our youths to take advantage of the efforts of the State Government and well meaning organizations creating safe spaces which promote discipline, moral and healthy competition to better their lives. We believe strongly that the youths are the bedrock of societal development and if a youth is educated, trained and empowered, he or she is built; and if you build the youths, you build a nation.

"On this note, the Government has decided to support the cause of Voluntary Youth Organisations (Uniformed and Non-Uniformed) registered with the State. We will make financial donations to these organisations including but not limited to the Boys Scouts, Girls Guide, Brigade – Boys and Girls, Sheriff Guard and the Red Cross."

While explaining the need for the support, the Governor said it was important for a platform to be created for the youths of today to be better leaders of tomorrow, and such required proper training.

"We are supporting these voluntary organisations in order for us to promote what they stand for and use it to inculcate discipline and also mentoring for leadership to our younger ones. We would actively now participate in what is going on in all these organisations.

"It is time for us to create that old platform to redirect the energies of younger people to positive things and so we need to scale up the activities of voluntary organisations like the Scout Association so that we create an alternative for the younger ones and make them the real successors to whatever it is that we are doing, Governor Ambode said.

The Governor, who appreciated the Scout Council for honouring and identifying with the programmes of his administration toward the betterment of human lives in the State, said it was also instructive to note that the association ranked among the leading voluntary organizations established to inculcate virtues of discipline, leadership, patriotism and community service in the youths.

"Voluntary organizations such as Scout Association which comprise young people provide a strong platform to promote unity and mental co-existence which are critical to the survival, growth and development of our nation. Unfortunately, in the recent past, Voluntary Youth Organizations have not been as vibrant as they used to be.

“There is therefore an urgent need to do a self- appraisal of the current state of these organizations and develop strategies that will improve their relevance within the context of modern realities. I urge you to stay true to your highly encouraging vision statement which says that “By 2023 Scouting will be the world’s leading educational youth movement, enabling 100 million young people to be active citizens creating positive change in their communities and in the world based on shared values”.

The Governor, as part of the event, was also conferred with the award of Ambassador of Peace for the Scout Association of Nigeria, while the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule was also invested as the Grand Matron of Lagos State chapter of Nigerian Girls Guide.

Bakers set to increase bread prices

Anna Okon
The high cost of baking ingredients may push bread prices up, bakers have warned.

The Premium Bread Makers Association of Nigeria gave this warning on Monday at a press briefing in Lagos.

“The challenges we face as a result of the incessant increase in the prices of baking ingredients have rendered most premium bakeries comatose making us to operate at a loss,” the President of the association, Mr Jemide Tosan, stated.

The association noted that whereas the prices of flour, sugar and other baking ingredients had increased threefold in the past three years, there had been no corresponding increase in the prices of premium bread by the PBAN members.

It said between 2015 and 2018, the price of flour had increased from N6,500 to N11,500 per 50kg bag, while sugar had seen 77 per cent rise in price in the same period, with salt, margarine, yeast and preservatives had recorded 84 per cent, 67 per cent, 112 per cent, 45 per cent and 137 per cent increases, respectively.

Also, the price of diesel, which is used to power factory generators on a 24-hour basis, had gone up by 57 per cent, while the price of improvers used in enhancing the quality of bread had risen by 160 per cent during the period, the association stated, adding that conversely, the price of bread had only witnessed 11 per cent rise within the period.

“Most of us got loans with double-digit interest rates from financial institutions to fund our bakery projects and are finding it extremely difficult to meet our loan repayment obligations,” Tosan noted, adding that something had to be done to save the industry from extinction.
He said, “Given the current situation, most premium bakeries may be forced to embark on a price increase, which will further make bread unaffordable to the common man.

“As an association, we are totally committed to ensuring that Nigerians have healthy, quality, affordable and harmless bread on their tables.

2019: AMBODE OFFICIALLY DECLARES FOR SECOND TERM

…Picks Guber Form, Says I’m Undaunted, Ready To Achieve More For Lagosians

…Thanks Party Leaders, Residents

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday officially declared his intention to seek re-election in 2019 on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC), saying he remains undaunted and resolutely committed to achieve more for the State.

Addressing scores of residents and party faithful who defied the heavy downpour to witness the declaration ceremony in Alausa, Governor Ambode recalled how the journey began four years ago when he called on Lagosians to join him in a journey of selfless service to build a secure and prosperous State driven by a vibrant economy and supported by quality service, equity and justice, saying it was gratifying that the people believed in him and gave their support.

According to the Governor, “In the last three and a half years, I have fulfilled my promises to you to make Lagos work for all. With your support, we have made Lagos a better place and changed the face of our State. I did not do it alone; we did it together, because you believed.

“Our State has remained steadily prosperous because of your positive outlook. I urge you to always stay positive in your personal and communal lives and continue to aspire to great things,” he said.

While thanking all Lagosians for believing in his administration and for the support so far, Governor Ambode, who had earlier picked up his expression of interest and nomination form at the National Secretariat of the party in Abuja, specifically appreciated members of APC and political leaders in the State, especially the party’s National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, for giving him the platform to contribute to the further growth and development of the State.

The Governor said though a lot had been achieved, he was nonetheless not daunted or tired to achieve a lot more for the State, adding that such was the reason for humbly seeking the support of the people to achieve more for the State.

“In these three and a half years as your Governor, I have seen visible proof that we can achieve unbelievable things when we all come together with no more than our belief in our dreams.

“We achieved because you believed. But there is still a lot more to be done. But I am not daunted. I am not tired. And I am sure you feel the same way because we all envision a better Lagos, a Lagos of our dreams.

“So, I humbly call you again, to give me your support as I seek to continue with your mandate to steer the affairs of our State. I ask you to believe again and together, let’s achieve more,” Governor Ambode said.

Also speaking, Senator representing Lagos East senatorial district at the upper legislative chamber, Gbenga Ashafa said Governor Ambode had already been endorsed for a second term by Tinubu on account of his sterling performance in office.

According to him, "We are so proud to have Governor Akinwunmi Ambode as our Governor.

"As the Senator representing Lagos East senatorial district which produced him even though he is for the whole of Lagos State and Nigeria, we are saying we are very happy to endorse him (Governor Ambode) for a second term on the instruction of our leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu," Ashafa said.

Among scores of APC leaders and members present at the declaration include wife of the Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode; Deputy Governor, Dr. Mrs Idiat Adebule; Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello; Senator Musiliu Obanikoro; Senator Gbenga Ashafa, Senator Ganiyu Solomon; members of the House of Assembly; members of the State Executive Council, all the 57 Local Government Chairmen, among others.

How Police Arrested 60years -Old Kidnapper with Two Sons In Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command, on September 7, 2018, busted a kidnappers' den located at No.15, Irepodun street, Egan, Igando, Lagos, operated by a mother, Aminat Karimu Ajibola, age 60 years and her two sons, Akeem Bashiru, 32 years and Ojo Solomon, 26 years.

The family is a deadly bunch of kidnappers who thrives by using the social media to lure out their victims and put them in captivity until a ransom is paid.

The trio met their waterloo when one Ms. Bridget Obazee, approached the Divisional Police Officer in charge Igando Police station, CSP Taiwo Kasumu at about 0400hrs of 07/09/2018 and complained to him that her brother, one Osahon Obazee, has been missing for days and that the kidnappers were threatening to kill him unless they pay a one million, five hundred thousand Naira ( N1, 500,000.00) ransom. She added that they warned her not to involve the police else her brother will be killed.

The DPO quickly contacted the Commissioner of Police, CP Imohimi Edgal, who reinforced his team with men drafted from the Intelligence Unit of the Command and together, they left in search of the victim.

Same day, at about 1100hrs, through discreet investigation, the following suspects were arrested at the aforementioned address, namely, Aminat Kareem Ajibola, a Chief Priestess and custodian of an Ifa shrine, her two sons, Akeem Bashiru and Ojo Solomon.

Also rescued during the operation, were two other victims found in the apartment, namely, Fadugbagbe Akindele, male, of No.7 Peace Crescent Salolo, Meiran, Lagos and one Ekwegbalu Augustine who was lured all the way from Anambra state with the promise of a job placement  in an Oil company. They had been held for weeks by the kidnappers pending payment of ransom by their families . All those rescued had been identified and reunited with their relations.

During interrogation, the youngest member of the family of kidnappers, Ojo Solomon confessed that he was able to lure out the victims with the  promise of getting them an employment and to some, a gay relationship. While his  mother empowers him and his brother spiritually, she uses the charms (Juju) to intimidate and  instill fear in their victims.

The CP Lagos hopes that by this feat and several others in the past, criminals ought to have seen how futile it is to carry out their trade in any part of the state no matter how far flung the area may be. He therefore warns that criminal elements in the state should either repent or be busted as Lagos is no hibernation ground for criminals. He thanks the good people of Lagos state for their cooperation by way of giving the police credible and timely information.

Elon Musk smoked pot and drank whiskey on the Joe Rogan podcast and said he's going to soon announce a new "Neuralink" product that can make anyone superhuman.
"I think we'll have something interesting to announce in a few months ... that's better than anyone thinks is possible," the Tesla CEO said on "Joe Rogan Experience." "Best case scenario, we effectively merge with AI."
Musk, whose enterprises include a company called Neuralink, says his new technology will be able to seamlessly combine humans with computers, giving us a shot at becoming "symbiotic" with artificial intelligence.
Musk argued that since we're already practically attached to our phones, we're already cyborgs. We're just not as smart as we could be because the data link between the information we can get from our phones to our brains isn't as fast as it could be.

"It will enable anyone who wants to have superhuman cognition," Musk said. "Anyone who wants."
Rogan asked how much different these cyborg humans would be than regular humans, and how radically improved they might be.
"How much smarter are you with a phone or computer or without? You're vastly smarter, actually," Musk said. "You can answer any question pretty much instantly. You can remember flawlessly. Your phone can remember videos [and] pictures perfectly. Your phone is already an extension of you. You're already a cyborg. Most people don't realize you're already a cyborg. It's just that the data rate ... it's slow, very slow. It's like a tiny straw of information flow between your biological self and your digital self. We need to make that tiny straw like a giant river, a huge, high-bandwidth interface."
Musk, who spoke about Neuralink before he smoked pot on the podcast, said this sort of technology could eventually allow humans to create a snapshot of themselves that can live on if our bodies die.
"If your biological self dies, you can upload into a new unit. Literally," Musk said.
Musk said he thinks this will give humans a better chance against artificial intelligence.
"The merge scenario with AI is the one that seems like probably the best. If you can't beat it, join it," Musk said.

Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, says he will no longer contest the 2019 presidential election because the All Progressives Congress (APC) rigged the last governorship election in the state.

Fayose had declared interest in the number one position in the country, vowing to defeat President Muhammadu Buhari in a free and fair election.

“I am inviting you today, distinguished leaders of our party, is to inform you formally that I will be seeking the ticket of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to contest the 2019 presidential election,” he had said on September 28, 2017.

“My party leaders, standing before you is Peter (The Rock) Ayodele Fayose, the man already destined by God to take Nigeria out of the present political and economic stagnation.”

But speaking with TheCable, Fayose said he has decided to put his ambition aside and face the petition filed by Kolapo Olusola, his deputy and gubernatorial candidate of the PDP, in the last governorship election.

The governor spoke through Idowu Adelusi, his chief press secretary.

“Governor Ayodele Fayose has decided to bury his ambition because of the last Ekiti governorship election that was rigged by the APC and we have already filed a petition at the tribunal,” he said.

“So presently, the governor is more concerned in getting back the mandate of his deputy, Professor Eleka, than his presidential bid.

Osinbajo inaugurates disbursement of capital to two million traders

Ifeanyi Onuba, Abuja
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday began the disbursement of start-up capital for 39,000 petty traders in the Federal Capital Territory.
The disbursement is part of the current administration’s drive to empower over two million petty traders across the country through a commercial loan scheme tagged “Trader moni.”

The scheme being implemented by the Bank of Industry allows each beneficiary to get an interest free loan of between N10,000 to N15,000.
The interest-free loan is part of the social intervention programmes under the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration.
The VP also inaugurated a One-Stop-Shop to address some of the impediments to the growth of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in the country.

Osinbajo commissioned the facility which is located at the headquarters of the Abuja Enterprise Agency.
The centre would provide MSMEs with support services to grow their businesses.

Some of these support are access to finance, enterprise development and regulatory support in areas such as business registration, tax-related issues, and export promotion.

The VP while speaking at the event said the establishment of the centre underscored the effort of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to creating an environment that would support the rapid growth of MSMEs in the country.

The Executive Director, MSMEs, Bank of Industry, Toyin Adeniji, said that the bank is partnering with the Federal government to empower small traders.

Adeniji said that the project which is wholly driven by the government is expected to give N10,000 grant each to the traders to boost their businesses.

CAN kicks as herdsmen kill seven in Plateau

Friday Olokor, Jos

Seven persons have been confirmed dead as gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen struck in some villages in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

While five of the victims were killed at Razat mining site in Gana-Ropp village, two others died during an attack in Nding Suisut community on Thursday by the gunmen.

But the Christian Association of Nigeria has condemned the killings with a call on the residents of Barkin Ladi to be very vigilant while security agencies embark on a manhunt for the perpetrators.
The chairman of CAN (Northern zone), Rev Yakubu Pam, in a statement on Thursday, said the gunmen escaped from the scene of the attacks after killing their victims at the tin mining site.

He expressed regrets that the way and manner the local miners were shot dead at the tin mining site of Razat Community of Kwock, Ropp District, was an indication that some people were plotting to return Plateau State back to its dark days of the past.
“Let me tell you that there is no resting place for the wicked; these evil men would definitely be caught by the law enforcement personnel very soon,” Pam stressed.

He added that the killers of Gyang, Jillim, Lamba, David and a woman named Rebecca at the tin mining site of Razat must be brought to justice to serve as deterrence to other merchants of death planning such heinous crimes.

The Spokesperson of Plateau State Police Command, Matthias Tyopev, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed the killings, saying investigations were on to apprehend the perpetrators.

Court remands two for allegedly killing, robbing man of $80,000

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday remanded two commercial drivers, who allegedly killed a Bureau De Change operator, Victor Thorpe, after robbing him of 80,000 dollars.

The accused, Monday Okoh, 50, and Johnbull Friday, 35, whose residential addresses were not provided, are facing three counts of conspiracy, robbery and manslaughter.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr A.A. Fashola, who did not take the pleas of the accused, said the duo should be kept behind bars pending the advice of the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.

Fashola adjourned the case until Nov. 26 for DPP’s advice.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Unah, told the court that the men, while armed with a locally made pistol and other offensive weapons, robbed the late Victor Thorpe of 80,000 dollars.

Unah told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 27 at about 12.40 pm at Bonny Camp Roundabout, Victoria Island, Lagos.
According to him, the accused, while riding on a motorcycle, double-crossed the commercial bus, which the deceased boarded, went inside, snatched the money, and shot him in the chest.

He said that the late Victor Thorpe dropped his car for fear of being trailed, not knowing that the accused were already monitoring him.
The prosecutor said, “Thorpe was the only one killed in the bus.”

The offences contravene Sections 222, 297 (2) and 299 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

CHINESE CONSORTIUM TARGETS EARLY 2019 FOR WORK ON 3050MW MAMBILLA POWER PROJECT – PRESIDENCY

President Muhammadu Buhari has received assurances from the Joint Venture Partners assigned to construct the 3050 Megawatts Mambilla Hydro-electric Power Plant, that all processes leading to the start of work would soon be completed to pave way for the commencement of the project early next year.

At a meeting Thursday in Beijing with Professor Lyu Ze Xiang, the President of CGCC, the construction company, President Buhari asked to be briefed on time lines for the commencement of work, following his highly successful meeting with the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping.

The Nigerian President, who likened the Mambilla to China’s Three Gorges Dam, said given the significance of the project to Nigeria’s socio-economic development, there was a need for its speedy completion.

“I am very pleased with the concern you have shown for the significance of this project,” he told the head of the construction giant, adding, “I would like you to ensure its speedy completion.”

Xiang informed President Buhari that Nigerian officials and the project consultant would meet in two weeks to address the questions raised by President Xi for more detailed and updated feasibility and sustainability studies. He said a team had already been set up to work on the financing aspect.

“We fully understand the importance of this project to the economic and social wellbeing of Nigeria. In two weeks, we will sit down with the parties for the economic and sustainability analysis. It would take about four weeks to conclude the update,” he assured.

According to the lead contractor, “pre-commencement work,” would thereafter begin, dealing with access to site and putting in place the necessary support infrastructure such as power, water and transportation.

“Our target is to commence the project early next year,” he told President Buhari shortly before the Nigerian leader’s departure at the conclusion of his six-day official trip to China.

Resumption Date: LASG to sanction erring schools

Deputy Governor of Lagos State and the Superintendent of the Education Sector, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule has reiterated the need for all schools in the State, both private and public, to comply with the School Calendar jointly agreed upon and resume on the 10th of September, 2018.

Speaking at the Education Sectoral meeting on Thursday, Adebule frowned at a situation in which some private schools open a week before or after the agreed date and warned that any school found in breach of the rules will be sanctioned appropriately.

While looking forward to welcoming students, pupils, teaching and non-teaching staff back to school for the Y2018/19 academic session, she said the adoption of a uniform calendar makes for proper planning and ensuring that pupils and students attend school for the number of days required in the term.

The Deputy Governor commended teachers for working tirelessly to prepare the children for leadership, adding that the State Government will rededicate herself to their training, welfare and reward for excellence.

She advised children in the State, whether in public or private schools to devote more time to their studies; shun all vices including internet fraud, hooliganism, rape, examination malpractice, alcoholism and drug abuse.

Adebule also promised that the government of Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode will continue to do everything possible to improve service delivery in the public schools and ensure that private schools also deliver quality services to pupils and students

Osun Guber: Ogunbiyi, Adeleke unities ahead of elections

The crisis between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, and Dr Akin Ogunbiyi has been resolved.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki announced the reconciliation between both parties on Wednesday.

In a post on his Twitter page, Saraki wrote: “Following marathon meetings today in Abuja, I am pleased to announce that we have a signed agreement between PDP gubernatorial candidate, Senator Adeleke and his rival, Dr. Ogunbiyi.

” As we approach the September 22, 2018 governorship election, our party moves forward as one.”

Ogunbiyi narrowly lost to Adeleke, polling 1,562 votes as against Adeleke’s 1,569 and had file a petition against the Senator’s victory.

His camp had since then accused Adeleke of rigging at the primary election conducted by the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson in Osogbo.
