AgegePulse Magazine

Two inter - state robbers who have been breaking into homes and boutiques in Lagos and Ogun State and dispossesing residents of their belongings were on Wednesday arrested by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad in Oshodi after another successful outing.

The robbers, Gbemi Ogunleye, 45, a fairly used cloth seller in Ijora and Ini Effiong, 32, a road side Gala  hawker in Oshodi were arrested in early Wednesday morning after an all night robbery at the resident of one church cleric in Ibafo, Ogun State.

The suspects, in their confessions stated that they break into homes and boutiques in Ibafo at midnight, cart away clothes, mobile phones and electronics.

They added that during the day, they sell the electronic and phones as well as clothes before returning to their respective businesses in Ijora and Oshodi, Lagos.

Ogunleye stated that apart from the fairly used clothes popularly known as ‘okrika’, which he sells in Ijora, he also sells clothes and shoes taken from their victims at night. He maintained that they target boutiques and surveyed the environment days before breaking into them at night.

Effiong in his confession to the police disclosed that although he hawks snacks in traffic, he teamed up with Ogunleye to rob at night.

He explained that he also robs in traffic at night, adding that he has snatched many mobile phones in traffic in Oshodi Oke, Bolade and PWD while hawking snacks.

The two suspects who couldn’t give the specific figure of houses and boutiques they have broken into confessed that their operations have been more restricted to Ibafo and Mowe because they feared they would be arrested if they attempted to rob in Lagos.

Ogunleye noted that he met Effiong in February 2019 in Oke - Koto, Agege. He stated that their discussions on how to survive the nation's economic realities made them team up.

He further maintained that before he met his colleague, he had been operating alone limiting himself to Ibafo and Mowe. “I dont rob or burgle houses and boutiques everyday. Whenever I have money, I buy ‘okrika’ in Kotangoa market and sell them in Ijora, Lagos”.

The suspects disclosed that whenever they want to rob, they would converge in Kara, Ogun State before proceeding to Ibafo around 11:00 p.m to hang around the area before striking their target at about 1:00 a.m.

On their last operation in Ibafo, he said, “we hid in the bush till 2:00 a.m before we could gain entrance in to the house. We used cross bar to shift the burglar - proof from where we entered. We were with the occupants of the house till 5:00 a.m.

We collected 5 mobile phones, N4, 000 and a motorcycle. We were in Oshodi when RRS bike riders intercepted and arrested us in the morning”.

Already, about three of their victims have identified the suspects  at RRS headquarters. One of them, a teenager revealed that the suspects spent more than 5 hours with her and her younger sister while their parents were away.

She added that they parked all her mother's jewellery, clothes and two flat screens before escaping.

Also arrested with the suspects was one Chinedu Onyema, their receiver. He came to Oshodi with N30,000 trying to bribe the police to release the suspects.

Recovered from the suspects were seven mobile phones, N4000 and a motor cycle with the registration number GGE 962 QN

Onyema has confessed being their receiver and that he bought mobile phones and electronics from the suspects.

Commenting on the development, the Commissioner of Police Hakeem Odumosu stated that there would be no hiding place for criminals in the metropolis.

Answering questions from the media at the event, the Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Works and Infrastructure, Engineer Aramide Adeyoye said the present administration is resolute to deliver the 4th Mainland bridge through a process that will build investor-confidence and attract the best bargain for the construction of the highway.

Sanwo-Olu’s Aide rallies support from CEOs, Heads of Govt Agencies

… As Parastatals Monitoring Office Holds Workshop For Heads of Agencies

 AgegePulse Magazine

The Chief of Staff to the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Tayo Ayinde has craved for the support of all heads of government-owned agencies and parastatals in the State towards the realisation of the vision of the current administration.

Ayinde made the plea at the commencement of a two-day workshop organised for the Chief Executives of government agencies in Lagos State, emphasising the importance of a full understanding of the agenda of the State Governor by the helmsmen as well as keying into the areas that are relevant to the mandate of their organisations.

“This is very crucial because the success of this administration would depend on the successful implementation of responsibilities assigned to your parastatals and agencies,” the Chief of Staff said.

He enjoined the participants to take advantage of the workshop and gain full knowledge and understanding of the processes and procedures required for the day to day running of their respective organisations.

“This administration, led by Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, is result-oriented and determined to leave a legacy of unprecedented development that will impact directly the lives of every Lagosian irrespective of gender, religion, tribe or socio-economic background.  I urge you to embrace this philosophy of governance within your spheres of authority and responsibility with special consideration for transparency, accountability and value for taxpayers’ money,” Ayinde stated.

In a similar contribution, the Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Paratstals Monitoring Office, PMO, Mr. Afolabi Ayantayo disclosed that the supervisory roles played by the Office as regards the Parastatals and Agency are not meant to witchhunt, but to work hand in hand with each other so as to effectively coordinate their activities for the advancement of the State.

He said that the Workshop was meant to further enhance the capabilities of the participants to discharge the enormous tasks bestowed on them as heads of various government and semi-autonomous establishments charged with providing various services towards enhancing the quality of life of Lagosians.

Ayantanyo also revealed that since the resuscitation of the Office under the present administration, the Parastatals Monitoring Office (PMO) team has traversed 83 government companies, agencies and parastatals, straddling the nooks and crannies of the entire area of the State.

The visit to the agencies, according to him, was to have first-hand information about the various offices and also advise government about the activities of each of the agencies.

Speaking on the essence of establishing the various agencies, Ayantayo stated that the establishment of the agencies was borne out of the need to decentralise government services and also make it easily accessible to service seekers in a very swift and efficient manner.

“It is simply because the Government desires to make certain qualities of life obtainable for the majority, if not all citizens, through the running of some essential services which, if left to the private sector, may not be accessible, or may be accessible at exorbitant costs.”

“For example, it would be unimaginable to expect the Ministry of Transportation to directly manage hundreds of buses plying different routes on a daily basis, therefore, there has to be LAMATA and LAGBUS,” the Special Adviser explained.

He expressed the belief that at the end of the workshop, Lagos State will have a group of more dedicated, industrious and overwhelmingly confident Chief Executive Officers and Heads of Agencies and Parastatals ready to actualise the vision of this administration as encapsulated in the T.H.E.M.E.S  agenda.

Xmas/New Year Celebration: Agege bans fireworks, orders Street Carnivals’ organisers to seek approval

AgegePulse Magazine

Agege Local Government area of Lagos State has banned the usual deployment of fireworks in celebration of the Christmas and the New Year and ordered organisers of street carnivals in the area to seek its approval before throwing parties.

The directives were contained in a statement the Executive Chairman, Alh. Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi issued wherein he rationalised the orders.

Egunjobi said the local government was motivated by its statutory responsibility of maintaining security of lives and properties at all time and around the clock.

He said while the council acknowledged that it is within the rights of the area’s residents to party, have fun and over indulge themselves during festive periods, it added that the government was not unaware of the attendant violence and crimes that were associated with the occasion, particularly Christmas and New Year celebrations.

“The council recognise that it is well within the rights of people of Agege to celebrate and merry this period, but we must also bear it in mind that violence and other forms of crimes usually peaked during this Christmas and New Year’s celebration.

“Among the causative agents, which we identified at the last held Security meeting of the council are: the street carnival and the use of fireworks during this yuletide. While street carnival provided a breeding ground for rival cult groups clash, not few crimes are perpetrated under the guise of massive fireworks display.

“As a responsible government, it is imperative for us to ensure security of lives and properties of residents, business owners and visitors. In the light of the aforementioned, no street carnivals must be held without the approval of the council while the use of fireworks by individuals or institution is outrightly ban.

Recall that last week, the Council banned the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, from operating in Agege, citing perpetration of violence and the illegal conversion of roads and markets to parks and garages as the reason for the embargo.

Three killed in Lagos brutal NURTW, gang clashes, 75 arrested

AgegePulse Magazine

At least one person was yesterday confirmed dead after suspected cultists went on rampage around Pako, Yeside and Cassette bus stops in Aguda, Surulere area of Lagos State. This came a day after Sunday’s cult war in Ilasa, which claimed another life.

Also, two persons have died and scores of residents injured when members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) clashed in Lagos yesterday. Of the two killed during the ongoing clash was a chairman of a unit in Ijesha, Surulere axis.

The police spokesman, Bala Elkana said police teams from the Special Strike Force on Social Miscreants, Rapid Response Squad, Area C Command Surulere, Aguda and Ijesha Divisions were mobilised to the scene and the situation brought under control, adding that “75 suspects from both sides were arrested.”

It was gathered that the incident started in the early hours of Monday when some group of boys trooped from Mushin to Aguda and started shooting gunshots sporadically in an apparent attempt to call out their rivals.

An eyewitness, Felix Ogwezi, told The Guardian: “We initially thought it was a robbery incident. But we later heard that they were cult members. We all had to run for our lives. We understand that the fight is between two cult groups but we appeal to the Lagos State government to deploy able combatant security operatives to these troubled spots and stop these unnecessary deaths over gang wars.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser, Information and Strategy to the council chairman, Lanre Oguntoyinbo, said the unrest, which occurred in the Pako area of Surulere, a boundary area between Coker/Aguda LCDA and Itire/Ikate LCDA, has been brought under control.

In the other development, it was gathered that the clash over who controls NURTW in Ijesha started on Sunday night between factional members of the transport union, leaving residents to panic and scamper for safety. The clash, according to a member of the NURTW, was orchestrated by one of the unit chairman, who aimed to overthrow the incumbent Ijesha branch chairman.

The PPRO, Elkana confirmed that two people were killed in the clash, which began on Sunday. According Elkana, on December 15, at about 11:41 a.m. police received a distress call that there was a gun shot at Pako, Aguda Canal. On getting to the scene, police found the body of one Alagodo ‘m’ 27 years old, a follower of one Eluku who is currently in prison over violent crimes.

AgegePulse Ad
“On December 16, at about 08:30 a.m. some hoodlums from Ijesha, in what looks like a revenge mission stormed Aguda in large numbers with cutlasses, bottles and stone and other dangerous weapons. The hoodlums destroyed about 22 shops and vandalised some vehicles. Some hoodlums from Aguda equally reacted. One of the hoodlums from Aguda known as Timileyin Odulana was injured by the hoodlums from Ijesha. He was rushed to Military Hospital, Yaba, where he was confirmed dead,” he said.

Son of the late Oba of Lagos sentenced to death for murdering his benefactor and taking over her business

AgegePulse Magazine

Adewale Oyekan, the 50 years old son of Oba Adeyinka Oyekan, Oba of Lagos, who died on March 1, 2003, has been sentenced to death alongside a former domestic servant, Lateef Balogun, 27, for the murder of Sikirat Ekun, a 62-year-old businesswoman and politician.

According to the prosecution, the prince hired Balogun for N6,000 to murder Mrs Ekun. The convicts, who have been in custody for seven years, murdered Mrs Ekun by strangling her and throwing her corpse in a 1,000-feet well in her home.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that according to the prosecution led by Akin George, the convicts committed the offences at 1.00a.m. on October 17, 2012, at the home of the deceased located at No. 5, Babatunde Lalega St., Omole Phase One, Lagos State.

The prosecution said that the deceased was a restauranteur who knew Mr Oyekan due to her friendship with his late mother. “To render assistance to the prince, Mrs Ekun employed him as the manager of her restaurant.

Balogun, the second defendant, was a former domestic staff of Ekun, who was employed by her to take care of her elderly father,” Mr George said. He submitted that Mr Balogun’s employment was, however, terminated following a dispute with Mrs Ekun.

“The convicts conspired, killed the deceased and threw her corpse in a well within the premises of her home, and took over her businesses and property including a bus which was sold for N170,000.

When any inquiry was made by family and friends about her whereabouts, Mr Oyekan informed them that she travelled to Abuja for the Ileya (Eid-el Kabir) festival. .

He passed this information by sending a text message from Ekun’s phone. However, following worry from members of her family and after an extensive search, her corpse was found in December 2012, by well diggers and firefighters.

The convicts had placed a generator, a gas cylinder and other household items on the corpse to conceal it in the 1,000 feet well,” he said. The trial at the High Court began on April 14, 2015.

In addition, they have littered the entire area with indiscriminate dumping of refuse and waste materials. It is interesting to note that none of the owners, occupants and illegal business operators have any permit from the State Government”.

He reiterated that immediately after the expiration of the 'Removal Order' on Thursday, 21st of December, 2019, the operatives of the Agency will embark on a clean-up exercise in the area as well as clampdown on all criminal elements disturbing law-abiding residents within Marwa waterside and the entire Lekki axis.

The Chairman also implored all illegal occupants of any of the government lands/properties across the state to immediately vacate same as anyone caught would be seriously dealt with in accordance with the law.

In a related development, operatives of the Agency have impounded 98 illegal commercial motorcyclists found plying restricted routes at Ikorodu and Agric Bus-Stop.

According to the Chairman "The Agency had issued several warning to these illegal commercial motorcyclists through their various associations to desist from plying 475 restricted routes including highways and bridges across the State".

CSP Egbeyemi confirmed that the combined efforts of the Agency with other Police formations as directed by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police CP Hakeem Odumosu would drastically  reduce the menace of motorcycle operators on restricted routes across the State.

He however warned members of the public not to patronise illegal commercial motorcyclists on illegal routes as both the rider and passenger are liable if arrested.

Yuletide: Sanwoolu drops One Lagos Fiesta, opts for one-day Greater Lagos Festival

AgegePulse Magazine

The popular One Lagos Fiesta, which used to entertain Lagosians and visitors for good eight days across five venues during the yuletide season will not happen this year.
Instead, the Governor Babajide Sanwoolu-led government has rebranded the concept into a leaner, one-day event that will hold only on December 31.

The event for this year is now tagged Greater Lagos Festival, picking its identity from Sanwoolu’s main campaign tag-line – Greater Lagos.

Sources within Alausa say at the moment the details of how the Greater Lagos Festival will be organised is still sketchy. But an official promotional clip from the government on Friday morning gives a hint that the main thrust of the festival will be the crossover night display of fireworks and a “first of its kind drone show” at the Eko Atlantic venue for the Victoria Island zone.

A source close to the seat of government told TCN that the Eko Atlantic end of the festival, where the governor and most cabinet members are expected to attend, is fairly concluded to have a concert, fireworks display and the drone show, with food courts within the premises.

But the shape of what to expect at the other venues in Ikeja, Ikorodu, Epe and Badagry are still being fleshed out along the possibilities of a few road shows before the main cross-over night concert.

The One Lagos Fiesta under Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was designed as an improvement over his predecessor’s Lagos Countdown show, which held only at the Bar Beach in Victorial Island on Dececmer 31 to celebrate the arrival of the new year.

The OLF started in December 2015 as a five-day spectacular show across the five IBILE divisions in Lagos State in line with Ambode’s promise of inclusive government and the need to develop the creative industry capacity in areas like Ikorodu, Epe and Badagry, which hitherto had no major end-of-the-year event that spanned several days.

Following the success of the maiden edition in 2015, the fiesta was expanded to eight days across the five venues the following year to become Africa’s biggest end-of-the-year open-concert show with 40 musical concerts across five venues simultaneously, commencing from Christmas eve, December 24th and lasting till the wee hours of the new year.

That template was sustained in 2017 and 2018 as well to give Lagosians their most memorable yuletide celebrations ever.

The first official hint of a scaled-down festival this year was given in October by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Arts and Culture, Mr. Solomon Sanu, while delivering a goodwill message at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) at Landmark Events Centre.
At the ceremony, he had promised Lagosians “an exceptional display of fireworks” to celebrate the end of the year.

Similarly, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Diaspora and Foreign Relations, Mr. Jermaine Sanwoolu, said last month that the fiesta had been rebranded as GLF in order to give it a new image that identifies it with the new governor and current administration.

A one-day festival on December 31st therefore eliminates the 40-concert template, drops the Lagos Grows Talent component of the fiesta which gave opportunities to young, fresh talents to be discovered across the state and also knocks out the Kiddies’ Section, where children play and are entertained from morning till 6pm free of charge before the main concert starts each day of the fiesta, across the five venues.

By far the biggest disappointment, however, will be the loss of activities and revenues to local traders, artisans and budding artistes especially in Babadry, Epe and Ikorodu whose sustenance for the last few months of the outgoing year and first months of the new year had depended largely on the proceeds of their sales from the eight days of OLF in the last three years.

However, a reliable source told TCN that Governor Sanwoolu should be commended for not totally jettisoning the idea of an end-of-the-year show.

“You know this is his first year and things are still a bit rough. You should understand that OLF was one of Ambode’s biggest successes and the new governor will also want to stamp his own identity on the project, knowing he cannot afford to drop the ball as far as entertainment and tourism are concerned. Rather than see what has happened as a diversion, please let’s see it as continuity with a slight variation. Afterall you can see that Governor Sanwoolu is still running with the brilliant initiative of ‘Ready. Set. Work’ in the Education Ministry, among others, which is also an Ambode initiative.

“I think by next year, the new concept would have been fully formed and every part of Lagos can return to the benefits they derived during OLF,” the source said.

In a letter signed by the council chairman, Alh.  Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi, to notify the road workers union of the ban, the council said it took the decision to stop alleged conversion of its markets and streets in the area to motor parks by the union accusing members of the body of perpetrating violence and causing gridlock and nuisance.

Churches To Pay Government N21,000 Naria For Each Marriage — FGN

PFN Reacts, Reject Law

AgegePulse Magazine

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), has rejected the newly introduced marriage certificate law by the federal government.

The Buhari led government had, through the Ministry of Interior, recently announced a compulsory N30,000 charge licence for Christian worship centres for the conduct of statutory marriages in churches and N21,000 for each marriage certificate.

The PFN described the policy as exploitative and an attempt to commercialize Christian marriages in the country. The National President of PFN Rev.(Dr.) Felix Omobude, in a statement he personally signed yesterday in Benin and made available to journalist, chided the Buhari led administration and the Ministry of Interior for imposing such anti-Christian law on the church in Nigeria.

To the best of our understanding, the new law is targeted against the Church because the Traditional and Islamic weddings are exempted from paying the new marriage certificate fees,

If the Ministry of Interior is in dire need of funds, it should look elsewhere and should not placing extra financial burden on the Christians and their churches.

“PFN would use all legitimate means to make the federal government to rescind its decision on the new marriage certificate law,” he said.

The Governor reiterated the need for the active participation of all stakeholders in the agricultural space towards mitigating the challenges of food supply and demand in the State, affirming that government cannot embark on the task alone.

He noted that as the State Government continues with its very laudable programmes and initiates new ones, the business of lots of farmers will be improved, jobs would be created and food production greatly enhanced.

Sanwo-Olu said the State Government has developed a five-year Agricultural roadmap with the theme “A Sustainable and Inclusive Growth Strategy with the Citizens at the core”,  as part of the efforts at making Lagos a 21st Century Economy with the agricultural sector playing a vital role in sustainable food security and economic diversification.

According to him, the roadmap focuses on the development of agricultural value chains where the State has competitive and comparative advantages, including the provision and availability of improved inputs, increased productivity and production.

The Governor explained that the State Government has already begun the implementation of various projects in the agricultural space targeted at revolutionising food production and, consequently, reducing dependence on other States for food supply.

He listed some of the projects to include the 32 tons per hour Rice Mill at Imota which will soon commence operations; the Agriculture-based Youth Empowerment Scheme (YES) aimed at breeding a new generation of Agro entrepreneurs in the State and the World Bank assisted Agro-processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support Project (APPEALS) designed to build capacities of actors in Rice, Aquaculture and Poultry Value Chains.

He said that the programme also provides the opportunity of channelling the needed support to smallholder farmers who are actively engaged in the various value chains and are thus able to create further wealth and job opportunities.

“The implementation of this project will significantly improve the standard of living of fish farmers, fishermen, marketers and agro-processors in the State, expand food production by 3%, increase revenue to the State Government in the form of taxes and other levies. This project will also create direct employment opportunities for 1,000 youths, farmers, processors and marketers across the Value Chains through farm expansion”, Lawal said.

….commences mass administration of drugs in Agege, Ikea, others

Lagos State Government is set to commence medical intervention campaign against Schistosomiasis; a neglected tropical disease which is endemic in seven local government areas of the State.

Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi who disclosed this to newsmen during a press briefing held at his office during weekend explained that the State would commence mass administration of medicines for the control of Schistosomiasis in  seven local government areas of the State.

He listed the local government areas as including, Ikeja, Ifako-Ijaiye, Amuwo-Odofin, Oshodi-Isolo, Agege, Lagos Mainland and Alimosho adding that health workers will go round schools, homes and other important places to administer on children between ages five and 14 from Monday 2nd  to Sunday, 8th December 2019.

He noted that the administration of medicines for control of the disease during the weeklong campaign would be carried out by the State government in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, World Health Organisation (WHO) and Mission to Save the Helpless (MITOSATH).

Answering questions on the cause and mode of transmission, the Commissioner explained that Schistosomiasis, also known as snail fever and bilharzia, is a disease caused by parasitic flatworms called schistosomes and acquired when people come into contact with fresh-water infested with the larval forms of flatworms adding that the microscopic adult worms live in the veins draining the urinary tract and intestines.

He further stated that most of the eggs laid are trapped in the tissues and the body’s reaction to them can cause massive damage.

Abayomi listed symptoms of the disease to include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, bloody stool, or blood in the urine with the possibility of death in the case of chronic schistosomiasis.

The Commissioner said that neglected diseases such as Schistosomiasis causes significant implications for the wellness and wellbeing of the society and the people noting that development in any society cannot be sustainable without maintaining the the health of its citizens.

"To eliminate the disease, interventions in the general hygiene of the environment, nutritional status and strengthening public health systems at both the primary and secondary healthcare level would be deployed", he added.

Abayomi explained that the diseases are generally termed neglected because they tend to be slow chronic diseases that don’t force patients to present and do damage slowly.

He added that government has no excuse to side-line the diseases as simple interventions on general hygiene, nutritional status and other basic things put in place at the primary and secondary health facilities can eliminate the diseases.

“We have no excuse to neglect these diseases because simple interventions put in place can eliminate the pathogens. By taking care of our hygiene, nutritional status as well as putting simple things in place will go a long way in eradicating the disease. That is why the present administration has put in place the one health approach to achieve optimal health outcomes," he said.

Abayomi added that the state government would utilise its One Health Approach to improve citizens’ health and strengthen mechanisms that would eliminate neglected diseases in the state

He said that collaborative efforts between ministries of agriculture, environment and health would assist to ensure a well-nourished people and engender a clean environment to resist diseases.

He stressed the state’s commitment to scaling up programmes to achieve optimal health outcomes and also commended partners supporting its efforts to eliminate neglected disease in the state.

The Commissioner urged parents and caregivers to take advantage of the medical intervention and make their children available for the intervention.

Earlier, Executive Director, Mission to Save the Helpless (MITOSATH), Dr Francesca Olamiju, said that the disease commonly affected school-age children who come into contact with it during their daily chores or at play in activities involving freshwater.

She said that from the mapping of the state, seven local government areas were shown to be endemic to schistosomiasis.

Olamiju listed the areas as; Agege, Alimosho, Lagos Mainland, Ifako Ijaiye, Oshodi-Isolo, Amuwo Odofin and Ikeja, adding that seven-day treatments would commence in the areas.

According to her, treatment with Praziquantel tablet would commence on Dec. 2 and would
focus on children aged five to 14 years old in the areas.

She appreciated the state for collaborating with MITOSATH to eliminate neglected disease in the state, and urged parents to cooperate with the caregivers by bringing their children for treatment.

Dr Olakunle Daramola, Director at the Federal Ministry of Health, said that public awareness and commitment to upscale hygiene would assist to eliminate neglected diseases, saying that disease-free society would catalyse development.

Former Lagos Speaker, Ikuforiji bags Ph.D, LLB

AgegePulse Magazine

The former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Adeyemi Ikuforiji is back on the radar with a bang! He’s back with two major accomplishments; He just completed his Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in Leadership at the Liverpool Business School, John Moores University, Liverpool, England.

He was also called to Bar on Wednesday in Abuja, having passed the one year Law School examination.

Apparently with his eyes set for the future, Ikuforiji, who is the longest serving speaker in the history of the State law making body, went back to school to, according to him, seek more knowledge on leadership and management. “The doctorate took me over five years to complete due to the exigencies of my former office and the nature of my research,” he said.

Not a few people were wondering why the former Epe born lawmaker disappeared from the radar in the last four years. Since his defeat in the All Peoples Congress (APC) governorship election in 2014 by Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, who eventually became the governor, Ikuforiji has been largely quiet with a casual interest and low profile in the politics of the state.

And it was obvious that most of his supporters were not aware of his decision to go back to school. Indeed, just few of his friends knew that he was studying law at the University of Lagos and even though he started his doctorate while he was still the Speaker, it never affected the way he presided over the House.

Hence, it’s a double celebration for a man who said he felt fulfilled to have achieved his age-long ambition of obtaining a doctorate degree and also being a lawyer. “You can only imagine how happy I am right now. There is nothing you can’t achieve once you set your eyes on it and you inculcate the necessary discipline. I thank my family and everyone for their support and encouragement”, he said.

Ikuforiji was on Thursday hosted by friends, family and associates in an impressive reception ceremony to celebrate his latest feat.

Speaking at the event, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila commended Ikuforiji for aspiring to acquire more knowledge and enhance self-development.

The Speaker who was represented by Hon Wale Raji said: “I want to felicitate with you. I remember when you were shuttling between Lagos, UK and Abuja and you were complaining of the busy schedule and I asked who sent you? Are you not the one that wants to seek more knowledge?

“I want to appreciate your commitment for self-development, you have done so much in your various endeavors as a banker, businessman and as a politician and you became the longest serving Speaker in Lagos House of Assembly.”

Dignitaries present at the ceremony include Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, Senator Solomon Olamilekan, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Chief Mrs Kemi Nelson, members of the Lagos State caucus in the House of Representatives, among many others.

The Chief Magistrate of the Consumer Court in Lagos Mrs. Dani-Oni issued an order in Suit No. MSC/154/19 for the seal up of the supermarket which was executed by officials of the agency

It would be recalled that Monitoring Team of LASCOPA on a surveillance inspection visited the supermarket earlier in the year and discovered expired products on display in the shelf and issued a Compliance Notice to the supermarket.

According to the Agency, during a revisit, another set of expired products were found on the store and the Supermarket Manager called the bluff of the Agency saying they could do their worse.

The continuous display and sale of expired products by the Supermarket necessitated the Court action pursuant to the promotion of Section 4 of the Consumer Protection Law of Lagos State.

The Agency therefore reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of consumers from all forms of unwholesome products and charged consumable product producers and marketers to prioritize the interest of consumers.
