LASEMA Recovers First Y2020 Road Crash at Ile Zik

...'Ember Months' is a Myth-DG LASEMA Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu

AgegePulse Magazine

While still celebrating the successful cross over into the new year, LASEMA Response Team from it's Cappa Base made the Agency's first recovery of the year at  Ile Zik Inward Dopemu, along Lagos – Abeokuta expressway yesterday.

Upon arrival at the scene of the incident for recovery operation in what turned out to be the first incident of Year2020, it was discovered by the Response Team that the containerized truck with unknown registration fell on it's side due to mechanical malfunction, constituting obstruction to vehicular activities along the express road.

However, no loss of lives were recorded, nor were injuries sustained during the successful recovery operation conducted using the Agency's heavy duty equipment - the Super Metro, to recover the containerized truck off the express road.

Commenting on the incident, the DG/CEO of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said that scientifically, this most recent incident has further debunked the mythical assertions to the "ember" months to which a lot of people erroneously attribute road crashes and other disasters.

"Scientifically, this accident of the containerized truck with unknown registration that fell on it's side on first day of the Year2020, did not fall due to the date or months of this new year, rather, it fell due to the fact that the truck developed a mechanical malfunction.

"This incident goes to prove that if this, and other truck owners do the needful in terms of proper maintenance of their fleet, training and retraining of their drivers, as well as ensuring that appropriate precautions are taken, such incidents will surely be averted to it's barest minimum, if not completely eradicated.

" This is why LASEMA is moving on to it's next level of incident prevention this Year2020 with increased enlightenment and even it's catch-them-young School Advocacy programs in order to educate the upcoming generation and inculcate appropriate safety precautions in their lifestyles from their growing years, so that they will not depart from it when they are fully formed".

Going further, Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu asserted that it was important to enlighten the present population of active adults on safety measures, prevention of emergencies and by extension, disasters, continuing that several scientific researches has proven that it takes a minimum of ten years - one decade, to achieve attitudinal change.

" Due to the long time it takes to achieve attitudinal change, it's also imperative that we go beyond this present generation of adults to groom the upcoming generations on safety measures, emergency/disaster prevention, at home, schools, corporate offices, places of worship with large gatherings of people. Today's children are tomorrow's adults which makes it imperative that they must be included in LASEMA's emergency/disaster prevention programs because Emergency/Disaster Management is Everyone's Business".

Aside the LASEMA Rescue Team that performed the successful operation, other responders present at the incident scene  included LASTMA, FRSC and officers of the Nigerian Police Force who were controlling traffic, while the Police also provided security all through the recovery operation.

According to him, Section 1(2), “Pensioner” should be redefined to include all retirees resident in the State from Federal and State Institutions and from both Private and Corporate organizations domiciled in the State;

The Committee also posited that Section 17(c) (i) there is no need for 50% payment by an aggrieved owners over disputed charges before their eligibility to appeal; while aggrieved residents/owners should pay the preceding year’s charges while the disputed charges are being resolved; amongst others.

The Committee however, recommended that as from the commencement of this Law; there should be proper classification of commercial and residential properties in the State for the purpose of levying charges in accordance with the provision of this Law by the property identification officers of the Ministry;

He further recommended that there shall be twenty percent (20%) increase from the fees chargeable before the repeal of the Land Use Charge Law Ch. L79 2015, and the increment referred to in sub-section (1) above shall be renewable every ten (10) years; Pensioner should be replaced with a person who retires from a Pensionable Office; The owner of the property is liable to pay Land Use Charge in respect of any taxable property;

It should be noted that from the date when Land Use Charge is levied on a property in accordance with this Law, the provisions of the Assessment Law, Land Rates Law, Neighborhood Improvement Charge Law and any amendments made pursuant to it shall cease to apply to that property amongst other recommendations.

The operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce) over the weekend began the demolition of all illegal structures, shanties, kiosks and containarised shops at 'Marwa Waterside' area of Lekki, Lagos

Speaking on the demolition, the Chairman of the Agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi disclosed that the exercise became imperative in preparation for the construction of a coastal road which will serve as an alternative route for the Lekki-Epe Expressway and enhance free flow of traffic on that corridor.

According to Egbeyemi, “Illegal business operators like Iron benders, Mechanics, food/fruits vendors and others were served a seven-day 'Removal Notice' by the government to remove their property and vacate the entire area and it expired on Thursday, 19th of December, 2019.

It was an eye-sore as these illegal artisans, food vendors and others littered the entire area with refuse and waste materials.

The Taskforce confirmed that after the expiration of the removal order, the government still gave these illegal squatters additional eight days grace to vacate the entire area before embarking on the clean-up exercise as well as clampdown on all criminal elements disturbing law-abiding residents within Marwa waterside and the entire Lekki axis.

He implored all illegal occupants on any of the government lands/property to immediately vacate same as it would not be business as usual across the State.

AgegePulse Magazine

Two inter - state robbers who have been breaking into homes and boutiques in Lagos and Ogun State and dispossesing residents of their belongings were on Wednesday arrested by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad in Oshodi after another successful outing.

The robbers, Gbemi Ogunleye, 45, a fairly used cloth seller in Ijora and Ini Effiong, 32, a road side Gala  hawker in Oshodi were arrested in early Wednesday morning after an all night robbery at the resident of one church cleric in Ibafo, Ogun State.

The suspects, in their confessions stated that they break into homes and boutiques in Ibafo at midnight, cart away clothes, mobile phones and electronics.

They added that during the day, they sell the electronic and phones as well as clothes before returning to their respective businesses in Ijora and Oshodi, Lagos.

Ogunleye stated that apart from the fairly used clothes popularly known as ‘okrika’, which he sells in Ijora, he also sells clothes and shoes taken from their victims at night. He maintained that they target boutiques and surveyed the environment days before breaking into them at night.

Effiong in his confession to the police disclosed that although he hawks snacks in traffic, he teamed up with Ogunleye to rob at night.

He explained that he also robs in traffic at night, adding that he has snatched many mobile phones in traffic in Oshodi Oke, Bolade and PWD while hawking snacks.

The two suspects who couldn’t give the specific figure of houses and boutiques they have broken into confessed that their operations have been more restricted to Ibafo and Mowe because they feared they would be arrested if they attempted to rob in Lagos.

Ogunleye noted that he met Effiong in February 2019 in Oke - Koto, Agege. He stated that their discussions on how to survive the nation's economic realities made them team up.

He further maintained that before he met his colleague, he had been operating alone limiting himself to Ibafo and Mowe. “I dont rob or burgle houses and boutiques everyday. Whenever I have money, I buy ‘okrika’ in Kotangoa market and sell them in Ijora, Lagos”.

The suspects disclosed that whenever they want to rob, they would converge in Kara, Ogun State before proceeding to Ibafo around 11:00 p.m to hang around the area before striking their target at about 1:00 a.m.

On their last operation in Ibafo, he said, “we hid in the bush till 2:00 a.m before we could gain entrance in to the house. We used cross bar to shift the burglar - proof from where we entered. We were with the occupants of the house till 5:00 a.m.

We collected 5 mobile phones, N4, 000 and a motorcycle. We were in Oshodi when RRS bike riders intercepted and arrested us in the morning”.

Already, about three of their victims have identified the suspects  at RRS headquarters. One of them, a teenager revealed that the suspects spent more than 5 hours with her and her younger sister while their parents were away.

She added that they parked all her mother's jewellery, clothes and two flat screens before escaping.

Also arrested with the suspects was one Chinedu Onyema, their receiver. He came to Oshodi with N30,000 trying to bribe the police to release the suspects.

Recovered from the suspects were seven mobile phones, N4000 and a motor cycle with the registration number GGE 962 QN

Onyema has confessed being their receiver and that he bought mobile phones and electronics from the suspects.

Commenting on the development, the Commissioner of Police Hakeem Odumosu stated that there would be no hiding place for criminals in the metropolis.

Answering questions from the media at the event, the Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Works and Infrastructure, Engineer Aramide Adeyoye said the present administration is resolute to deliver the 4th Mainland bridge through a process that will build investor-confidence and attract the best bargain for the construction of the highway.

Sanwo-Olu’s Aide rallies support from CEOs, Heads of Govt Agencies

… As Parastatals Monitoring Office Holds Workshop For Heads of Agencies

 AgegePulse Magazine

The Chief of Staff to the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Tayo Ayinde has craved for the support of all heads of government-owned agencies and parastatals in the State towards the realisation of the vision of the current administration.

Ayinde made the plea at the commencement of a two-day workshop organised for the Chief Executives of government agencies in Lagos State, emphasising the importance of a full understanding of the agenda of the State Governor by the helmsmen as well as keying into the areas that are relevant to the mandate of their organisations.

“This is very crucial because the success of this administration would depend on the successful implementation of responsibilities assigned to your parastatals and agencies,” the Chief of Staff said.

He enjoined the participants to take advantage of the workshop and gain full knowledge and understanding of the processes and procedures required for the day to day running of their respective organisations.

“This administration, led by Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, is result-oriented and determined to leave a legacy of unprecedented development that will impact directly the lives of every Lagosian irrespective of gender, religion, tribe or socio-economic background.  I urge you to embrace this philosophy of governance within your spheres of authority and responsibility with special consideration for transparency, accountability and value for taxpayers’ money,” Ayinde stated.

In a similar contribution, the Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Paratstals Monitoring Office, PMO, Mr. Afolabi Ayantayo disclosed that the supervisory roles played by the Office as regards the Parastatals and Agency are not meant to witchhunt, but to work hand in hand with each other so as to effectively coordinate their activities for the advancement of the State.

He said that the Workshop was meant to further enhance the capabilities of the participants to discharge the enormous tasks bestowed on them as heads of various government and semi-autonomous establishments charged with providing various services towards enhancing the quality of life of Lagosians.

Ayantanyo also revealed that since the resuscitation of the Office under the present administration, the Parastatals Monitoring Office (PMO) team has traversed 83 government companies, agencies and parastatals, straddling the nooks and crannies of the entire area of the State.

The visit to the agencies, according to him, was to have first-hand information about the various offices and also advise government about the activities of each of the agencies.

Speaking on the essence of establishing the various agencies, Ayantayo stated that the establishment of the agencies was borne out of the need to decentralise government services and also make it easily accessible to service seekers in a very swift and efficient manner.

“It is simply because the Government desires to make certain qualities of life obtainable for the majority, if not all citizens, through the running of some essential services which, if left to the private sector, may not be accessible, or may be accessible at exorbitant costs.”

“For example, it would be unimaginable to expect the Ministry of Transportation to directly manage hundreds of buses plying different routes on a daily basis, therefore, there has to be LAMATA and LAGBUS,” the Special Adviser explained.

He expressed the belief that at the end of the workshop, Lagos State will have a group of more dedicated, industrious and overwhelmingly confident Chief Executive Officers and Heads of Agencies and Parastatals ready to actualise the vision of this administration as encapsulated in the T.H.E.M.E.S  agenda.

Xmas/New Year Celebration: Agege bans fireworks, orders Street Carnivals’ organisers to seek approval

AgegePulse Magazine

Agege Local Government area of Lagos State has banned the usual deployment of fireworks in celebration of the Christmas and the New Year and ordered organisers of street carnivals in the area to seek its approval before throwing parties.

The directives were contained in a statement the Executive Chairman, Alh. Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi issued wherein he rationalised the orders.

Egunjobi said the local government was motivated by its statutory responsibility of maintaining security of lives and properties at all time and around the clock.

He said while the council acknowledged that it is within the rights of the area’s residents to party, have fun and over indulge themselves during festive periods, it added that the government was not unaware of the attendant violence and crimes that were associated with the occasion, particularly Christmas and New Year celebrations.

“The council recognise that it is well within the rights of people of Agege to celebrate and merry this period, but we must also bear it in mind that violence and other forms of crimes usually peaked during this Christmas and New Year’s celebration.

“Among the causative agents, which we identified at the last held Security meeting of the council are: the street carnival and the use of fireworks during this yuletide. While street carnival provided a breeding ground for rival cult groups clash, not few crimes are perpetrated under the guise of massive fireworks display.

“As a responsible government, it is imperative for us to ensure security of lives and properties of residents, business owners and visitors. In the light of the aforementioned, no street carnivals must be held without the approval of the council while the use of fireworks by individuals or institution is outrightly ban.

Recall that last week, the Council banned the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, from operating in Agege, citing perpetration of violence and the illegal conversion of roads and markets to parks and garages as the reason for the embargo.

Three killed in Lagos brutal NURTW, gang clashes, 75 arrested

AgegePulse Magazine

At least one person was yesterday confirmed dead after suspected cultists went on rampage around Pako, Yeside and Cassette bus stops in Aguda, Surulere area of Lagos State. This came a day after Sunday’s cult war in Ilasa, which claimed another life.

Also, two persons have died and scores of residents injured when members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) clashed in Lagos yesterday. Of the two killed during the ongoing clash was a chairman of a unit in Ijesha, Surulere axis.

The police spokesman, Bala Elkana said police teams from the Special Strike Force on Social Miscreants, Rapid Response Squad, Area C Command Surulere, Aguda and Ijesha Divisions were mobilised to the scene and the situation brought under control, adding that “75 suspects from both sides were arrested.”

It was gathered that the incident started in the early hours of Monday when some group of boys trooped from Mushin to Aguda and started shooting gunshots sporadically in an apparent attempt to call out their rivals.

An eyewitness, Felix Ogwezi, told The Guardian: “We initially thought it was a robbery incident. But we later heard that they were cult members. We all had to run for our lives. We understand that the fight is between two cult groups but we appeal to the Lagos State government to deploy able combatant security operatives to these troubled spots and stop these unnecessary deaths over gang wars.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser, Information and Strategy to the council chairman, Lanre Oguntoyinbo, said the unrest, which occurred in the Pako area of Surulere, a boundary area between Coker/Aguda LCDA and Itire/Ikate LCDA, has been brought under control.

In the other development, it was gathered that the clash over who controls NURTW in Ijesha started on Sunday night between factional members of the transport union, leaving residents to panic and scamper for safety. The clash, according to a member of the NURTW, was orchestrated by one of the unit chairman, who aimed to overthrow the incumbent Ijesha branch chairman.

The PPRO, Elkana confirmed that two people were killed in the clash, which began on Sunday. According Elkana, on December 15, at about 11:41 a.m. police received a distress call that there was a gun shot at Pako, Aguda Canal. On getting to the scene, police found the body of one Alagodo ‘m’ 27 years old, a follower of one Eluku who is currently in prison over violent crimes.

AgegePulse Ad
“On December 16, at about 08:30 a.m. some hoodlums from Ijesha, in what looks like a revenge mission stormed Aguda in large numbers with cutlasses, bottles and stone and other dangerous weapons. The hoodlums destroyed about 22 shops and vandalised some vehicles. Some hoodlums from Aguda equally reacted. One of the hoodlums from Aguda known as Timileyin Odulana was injured by the hoodlums from Ijesha. He was rushed to Military Hospital, Yaba, where he was confirmed dead,” he said.

Son of the late Oba of Lagos sentenced to death for murdering his benefactor and taking over her business

AgegePulse Magazine

Adewale Oyekan, the 50 years old son of Oba Adeyinka Oyekan, Oba of Lagos, who died on March 1, 2003, has been sentenced to death alongside a former domestic servant, Lateef Balogun, 27, for the murder of Sikirat Ekun, a 62-year-old businesswoman and politician.

According to the prosecution, the prince hired Balogun for N6,000 to murder Mrs Ekun. The convicts, who have been in custody for seven years, murdered Mrs Ekun by strangling her and throwing her corpse in a 1,000-feet well in her home.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that according to the prosecution led by Akin George, the convicts committed the offences at 1.00a.m. on October 17, 2012, at the home of the deceased located at No. 5, Babatunde Lalega St., Omole Phase One, Lagos State.

The prosecution said that the deceased was a restauranteur who knew Mr Oyekan due to her friendship with his late mother. “To render assistance to the prince, Mrs Ekun employed him as the manager of her restaurant.

Balogun, the second defendant, was a former domestic staff of Ekun, who was employed by her to take care of her elderly father,” Mr George said. He submitted that Mr Balogun’s employment was, however, terminated following a dispute with Mrs Ekun.

“The convicts conspired, killed the deceased and threw her corpse in a well within the premises of her home, and took over her businesses and property including a bus which was sold for N170,000.

When any inquiry was made by family and friends about her whereabouts, Mr Oyekan informed them that she travelled to Abuja for the Ileya (Eid-el Kabir) festival. .

He passed this information by sending a text message from Ekun’s phone. However, following worry from members of her family and after an extensive search, her corpse was found in December 2012, by well diggers and firefighters.

The convicts had placed a generator, a gas cylinder and other household items on the corpse to conceal it in the 1,000 feet well,” he said. The trial at the High Court began on April 14, 2015.

Lagos Gives 7-day Ultimatum To Occupants/Owners Of Illegal Shanties At Lekki Waterside To Leave

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce) over the weekend issued a 7-Day 'Removal Order' to all owners/occupants of illegal structures, shanties, kiosks and containarised shops at 'Marwa Waterside' area of Lekki, Lagos

Speaking on the removal order, the Chairman of the Agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, disclosed that the 'Removal Order' became imperative in preparation for a road construction along the coastal road which will serve as an alternative route for the Lekki-Epe Expressway and enhance free flow of traffic in that corridor.

According to him, “Illegal business operators like Iron benders, Mechanics, food/fruits vendors and others have turned the area into an eye-sore. In addition, they have littered the entire area with indiscriminate dumping of refuse and waste materials. It is interesting to note that none of the owners, occupants and illegal business operators have any permit from the State Government”.

He reiterated that immediately after the expiration of the 'Removal Order' on Thursday, 21st of December, 2019, the operatives of the Agency will embark on a clean-up exercise in the area as well as clampdown on all criminal elements disturbing law-abiding residents within Marwa waterside and the entire Lekki axis.

The Chairman also implored all illegal occupants of any of the government lands/properties across the state to immediately vacate same as anyone caught would be seriously dealt with in accordance with the law.

In a related development, operatives of the Agency have impounded 98 illegal commercial motorcyclists found plying restricted routes at Ikorodu and Agric Bus-Stop.

According to the Chairman "The Agency had issued several warning to these illegal commercial motorcyclists through their various associations to desist from plying 475 restricted routes including highways and bridges across the State".

CSP Egbeyemi confirmed that the combined efforts of the Agency with other Police formations as directed by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police CP Hakeem Odumosu would drastically  reduce the menace of motorcycle operators on restricted routes across the State.

He however warned members of the public not to patronise illegal commercial motorcyclists on illegal routes as both the rider and passenger are liable if arrested.
