Lagos Task force Debunks Report On Seized Vehicles

AgegePulse Magazine

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce) has debunked an online report alleging that the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has directed the Agency to return all seized vehicles in their custody to their respective owners in the State.

A release issued by the Office of the Chairman of the Agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, refuted the claim that the decision was a follow up to a memo he sent to the Governor seeking for his approval to auction all seized vehicles in order to create space for new ones.

Egbeyemi maintained that he was not aware of the purported memo neither did he receive any directive to release impounded vehicles from the Governor, adding that it is irresponsible and mischievous for any individual to insinuate that Governor Sanwo-Olu will give such order.

According to him, “Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is conscious of the provisions contained in the 2018 amended Traffic Law as it relates to the duties of the Taskforce and will never make pronouncements contrary to the provisions of the law”.

While noting that Transportation and Traffic Management play prominent roles in the present administration's T.H.E.M.E.S agenda, the Chairman recalled that the Governor had on numerous platforms stated unequivocally that “should members of his family or cabinet run foul or violate the traffic laws, they shall equally face the consequences of such acts”.

Egbeyemi, therefore, implored the general public, particularly owners of such impounded vehicles, to ignore and disregard the fake news designed to confuse and mislead them into not complying with 'Court Order' on such vehicles in the custody of the Agency.

Protest as SARS officer kills Remo Stars captain

By ‘Dare Odufowokan, Assistant Editor and Ernest Nwokolo, Abeokuta

There is palpable tension in Sagamu town, Ogun State, following the alleged killing of a footballer, Tiyamiyu Kazeem, the Assistant Captain of Remo Stars Football Club, a Nigerian National League side, by policemen attached to the State Anti-Robbery yesterday afternoon while returning home from the club’s weekend training session in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital. Eyewitness accounts at the scene of the incident alleged that the footballer, popularly known as Kaka, was allegedly chased by the SARS operatives before he was shot.

“The SARS operative labelled him as a Yahoo boy and started chasing him. Even when people who know him intervened and told them he is a footballer, they refused to let him be. They chased him until they shot him, wounding him fatally,” an eyewitness claimed. After shooting him, the officials ran away, leaving Kazeem to his fate. He was later rushed to Fakoya Hospital, Sagamu, by sympathisers, where he was pronounced dead.

The Remo Stars Football club announced Kazeem’s sudden passing away on their official Twitter handle. The Nigerian National League side stated that they are doing everything to investigate the cause of his death. “We regret to announce the departure of our assistant captain and defender, Tiyamiyu Kazeem (Kaka). The club is doing everything possible to investigate his ultimately death. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”

Angry residents took to the streets across the town to protest the murder of the footballer who many described as talented and hard working. A close friend of the deceased, Bolaji Soluade, who spoke with our correspondent, confirmed his untimely death and blamed the SARS operatives for the incident. According to him, one of the officers was apprehended by residents after the shooting but was rescued by other policemen before the mob could do him much harm.

Youths in Sagamu went wild with rage when the news filtered to them that the young man who was earlier in the day arrested in Sagamu alive without resistance, and taken to Abeokuta, was allegedly shot dead later by the police halfway into their journey to Abeokuta. It was learnt that quick intervention of senior police officers who moved in quickly to douse the tension saved Sagamu from turning into chaos. This is coming barely 48 hours after a similar protest broke out in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, on Thursday following the shooting of two Hausa traders in Olomoore Market by operatives of the Anti – Cultism Unit of the Ogun State Police Command.

Condemning what it called the unbearable excesses of the SARS operatives in Sagamu, the Pan Remo Forum (PRF), an umbrella body for socio-political groups in Remoland, said the death of Kazeem was “avoidable and needless.” In a release signed by its Organising Secretary, Lookman Banjoko, the forum called on concerned authorities to ensure that the killers of the promising footballer are fished out and punished appropriately.

The forum also condemned what it described as the tiring excesses of the SARS officers, who it accused of always oppressing the people of the town under the pretense of fighting crime and cultism. “This is just as we can categorically tell you that their interest lies more in the financial gratifications and exploitation they enjoy in the course of chasing Yahoo boys, real and imagined. We call on the governor and the police commissioner to rid Sagamu of these killers in uniform before it is too late,” PRF warned.

When contacted, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said nobody was shot dead by policemen. He, however, confirmed the death of a young man in Sagamu who he claimed was accosted by policemen on suspicion of a crime. According to the police spokesperson, the deceased was knocked down by an oncoming vehicle while trying to escape from the officers who arrested him.

The police spokesperson said the young man, whose identity he did not disclose, was accused of always kitting himself in full military uniform to harass and intimidate unsuspecting members of the public in Sagamu, which prompted a police inspector attached to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Abeokuta, to storm Sagamu alone and effected his arrest but while he was being taken to Abeokuta, the vehicle developed fault and had to park it by the roadside.

He explained that while the faulty car was being fixed, the suspect jumped out of the car and tried to run across the road, but a speeding vehicle, unfortunately, knocked him down and he died in the process. He also disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson, had given directive for the arrest of the allegedly erring inspector for investigation to ascertain the level of unprofessionalism exhibited in his conduct towards the victim and recommend appropriate disciplinary action.

#Amotekun: Lagos Assembly accepts Amotekun bill, set for public hearing Monday ...As Hon. Ogundimu Calls for Local Content, Native intelligence For Operation

AgegePulse Magazine

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday accepted the bill in favour of the South West Security outfit, Amotekun, and has fixed a public hearing on the outfit for Monday 24th February, 2020.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, at a sitting of the House, subsequently committed the bill to the House Committee on Information, Publicity, Security and Strategy, headed by Hon. Tunde Braimoh, for public hearing.

The Clerk of the House, Mr. Azeez Sanni, had informed the lawmakers that he received a letter from the state's Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo, on Wednesday 19th February, 2020 on the amendment of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC).

Sanni was subsequently ordered to read the bill entitled House of Assembly Bill No. 5 Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) Amendment Bill 2020 And for Connected Purposes for the first and second times.
The Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade (Ikorodu 1), said that the bill is an executive bill, but that it is predicated on the private member bill that established LNSC, which he said has been working well.

According to Agunbiade, the bill incorporates the concept of a more dynamic and more strengthened security platform than what they had in Lagos State.

"It is meant to energise and strengthen the security that we have in Lagos State based on the challenges in the state and in the South West.

"It tries to create a unit out of the LNSC to be referred to as Amotekun Corps to take charge of security in certain areas such as in the forest, highway and other places to protect us against hoodlums, cattle rustling and others.
"It will have a commander and Amotekun corps would bear harms with the permission of the police. They will cooperate with other security platforms in Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti and Osun states," he said.

He stressed that LNSC has a clause that will provide for Amotekun.

In his contribution, Hon. Oluyinka Ogundimu, (Agege 2), supported the bill and commended the foresight of the Lagos State House of Assembly on the security of the state.

Ogundimu stated that the law covers wider areas and made internal security a priority.
The lawmaker called for local content in the bill, adding that they needed people with native intelligence, and that whoever would be appointed as the Head of the unit should be approved by the House.

On his part, Hon. Olumuyiwa Jimoh, (Apapa 2) said that there is a problem of nomenclature in the bill.

Jimoh stated that the Nigerian Police had been existing before independence and that the people had been talking about their reforms.
"The colonialists formed the Nigerian Police for us in 1930 and we have not made efforts to form our own security force.

"The population of men of the Nigerian Police is small. We should encourage men of Amotekun to be armed and to be able to arrest and prosecute.

"South Africans have their own native police that checkmate other security forces. We can have the military wing of Amotekun in Lagos," he said.

Also speaking on the bill, Hon. Rotimi Olowo, (Shomolu 1) said that Amotekun started in Lagos with LNSC, and that the federal police lacked character as their structure has not helped to suppress crime.

"Security is local and it should be localized. The issue of kidnapping and others give credence to the need for community police.
"They should be allowed to use guns. They can reduce armed robbery attack, kidnapping and others. We should allow more money into the system.
"The recruitment of Amotekun should be localized. They should work in their neighbourhood so that they could apprehend criminals in their areas," he said. Hon. Rasheed Makinde, Ifako/Ijaiye 2 stated that security is local and that the country was getting close to having state police.

"We are setting a pace for other political regions in Nigeria. They can assist when there is any accident on our highways. There would be a collaboration amongst the six western states and beyond," he said.

Hon. Tunde Braimoh (Kosofe 2), who chairs the committee to look into the bill, said that governance is about giving meaning to the yearnings and aspirations of the people.
Braimoh stressed that what the people of the South West wanted now is security.
"People keep talking about Amotekun because that is what they want now. Amotekun emanated from the House with the LNSC, which has now transformed to Amotekun.

Section 14 (2B) of the Nigerian Constitution of 1999 emphasizes security. There are issues in the bill but they would be looked into later," he said.

The matter was also supported by all the lawmakers, who spoke on the matter including Hon. Victor Akande (Ojo 1), Hon. Bisi Yusuff (Alimosho 1), Adedamola Richard Kasunmu (Ikeja 2) and Hon. David Setonji (Badagry 2).

LAGOS BAN ON MOTORCYCLES AND TRICYCLES ; LAGOS STATE TASK FORCE NABS 2 FAKE UNIFORM OPERATIVES

AgegePulse Magazine

The operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce) nabbed two suspects for impersonating Security Officers at Oshodi, Lagos

Speaking on the incident, the Chairman of the Agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi disclosed that while one of the suspects (Monday Job) impersonated a Police Officer using his commercial motorcycle to scout for passengers on restricted routes, the second (Rasak Oloyede) presented himself as an Army Officer using his commercial bus for fraudulent acts along Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

Egbeyemi stated that after their arrest the two suspects confessed to the crime, saying that they indulged in the act in order not to be accosted by genuine security officers on monitoring duties or patrol.

According to him “Our intelligent reports revealed that some dubious-minded motorcyclists are now using fake Nigerian Army/Police uniform to scout for passengers on restricted routes as well as indulging in various forms of fraudulent acts across the State".

He reiterated the directive of the state government which stipulates that all security personnel on an official assignment with motorcycles must be fully kitted in uniform with their identity card conspicuously displayed.

The Chairman also reiterated that motorcycle operators must desist from plying all 475 restricted routes, adding that they must also wear their crash helmets and must possess riders permit for proper identification of the park they belong while plying other routes.

While urging members of the public to be vigilant and desist from patronising motorcyclists and commercial bus drivers wearing a fake security uniform, the Chairman disclosed that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu has directed that both suspects be charged to court for prosecution.

In his statement, one of the suspect (Monday Job) who hails from Akwa-Ibom State, confessed that he bought the uniform from a Police Officer who was deployed from Lagos to the northern part of the country for N7000, adding that he has since been using the uniform to carry out an illegal arrest and extorts money from both motorists and motorcyclists plying restricted routes along Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

"I was hawking before I joined Okada business over a year ago and I have been wearing this Police uniform to arrest and defraud Okada riders and making at least N30.000 to N35.000 daily”, he added.

The second suspect (Rasak Oloyede), who impersonated a Sergeant in the Nigerian Army, said he has been using the uniform he got from a dismissed Army officer to escape check points on roads by Traffic Officers.

He also claimed to be using the uniform to extort money from motorists and making a daily average collection of N25,000 to N40,000 whenever his Volkswagen commercial bus, with the registration number BDG149 XK, had mechanical faults.

PROFLIGACY: N35m car per law maker in the House of Reprsentatives?

AgegePulse Magazine

-----------------------------------
Its ridiculous that  the Federal law makers are insensitive to the plights of their constituents and common man in general.
Is it not absurd ?

In a country where majority of Nigerians live on   0-1-0 meal a day and payment of thirty thousand naira minimum wages is extremely difficult to pay for the states. The law makers' concern is to buy cars for themselves at N35m per one.

It's the height of insensitivity for the House of Representatives  to be thinking of buying such luxury at this present situation of Nigeria. No brazen act could rbe worst than daring the masses. If not , with hunger in the land ,with obvious poverty ravaging common man, they wouldn't have conceived such wastage of people's money.

No doubt, this confirms how profligate majority of our political office holders are.
Without occupying such office, how many of them in the real sense of it can afford such luxurious car?

Not quite long, Gbajabiamila was said to have procured a car of 100 million naira or so for his wife as a gift. Why not ?His membership of the house of Reps for over sixteen years made him buy  such "small car " otherwise ,he would have bought a car of    a billion naira if he has not occupied the legislative position.

This is the  main reason why many of them want to hold public office for life to finance their ostentatious living styles and no other reason.

It's high time that Civil Society as well as Nigerians as a whole start  canvassing for a part time  legislative houses that attract only sitting allowances and our  Constitution amended to that effect.

Majority of the present law makers and their leadership have nothing to offer the good people of Nigeria and the country other than enrichment of themselves.

Nigerians as a whole should prepare  to march on the House of Representatives until this idea of profligacy is stopped.

...Gov Urges Citizens To Pay Taxes To Enable Govt Discharge Its Responsibilities

AgegePulse Magazine

Lagos State Government has reiterated that there is currently no multiple taxation in Lagos State revenue system.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated this during a courtesy visit to Lagos House, Ikeja by the Executive Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service, (FIRS) Mr. Muhammad Nami.

Placing emphasis on startups, the Governor stated that his administration will always improve on the ease of doing business in the State rather than stifle the economy with loaded taxes.

Mr Sanwo-Olu promised to embrace and support the activities of start-ups who are scared of the tax burden associated with businesses.

He also urged Nigerians to pay their taxes regularly in order for the Government to attain a balanced development at all levels, which according to him, include social infrastructure, security among others.

The Governor promised that Lagos State Government would continue with the existing relationship and further collaborate with the Federal Inland revenue Service in sharing information to aid revenue collection and ensure deliverables were met.

Sanwo-Olu lauded the Federal Government for considering the starte up businesses in the exemption threshold on taxation.

His said: “we will make sure that there is ease of doing businesses, especially start-ups, that are always scared that they have multiple taxation. There is nothing like multiple taxation in Lagos.

“It is clear that they are exempted but that doesn’t stop them from doing proper filing and ensure transparent reporting at whichever level of their business.

“We will also use this opportunity to encourage our citizens that it is only when they play their own part as responsible citizens both at the corporate and individual level that the government can come up and discharge its responsibilities.

“Development is by tax and it is only when we collect reasonably amount of tax that we can introduce development both at infrastructure level and more importantly on security so we cannot but ensure that we collaborate and corporate with you," he said.

Responding to the Chairman on the N8.5 trillion target set by the President, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the country has the capacity to generate such amount but warned that it must be done cautiously.

Also speaking on the ongoing Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) 2020 meeting holding for the first time in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu said it was an opportunity to deliberate on the proceeds that State gets from the Federal Government was used judiciously.

He said: "I am sure they know clearly that you can live up to those bills and 8.5 trillion sounds a lot but they know you have the capacity.

The Executive Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, said the aim of the visit was to ensure effective performance of the service in meeting its target and in its request to share information, collaborate in building capacity as well as engage private sector on the Value Added Tax collection.

“We feel without this collaboration, we cannot generate this 8.5 trillion that we have been mandated by the President to generate,” he said.

“Most of the student-inventors have graduated in various fields of study while others have distinguished themselves in entrepreneurship and various self-sustaining vocations. Many have also become employers of labour rather than being employed or job seekers”, he added.

Adebayo, however, urged the students to be focused and shun all vices, pointing out that they should brace up for every challenge because opportunities exist from surmounting difficulties.

The highpoint of this year’s School Invention Platform “SIP” was the presentation of prizes to the First, Second and Third positions respectively in the different categories of Inventions, Poetry, Drama, Choreography and Songs.
