Protect women against abuse, Ambode urges Govs

...As Ajimobi, Aregbesola, Dickson, others underscore women's role in nation building

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday acknowledged the resilient nature of women and their strategic role in national development, saying that it was important for concerted efforts to be made to protect them against abuse and anything that can inhibit their progress.

Speaking at the 2017 National Women Summit of Oyo State Officials' Wives Association (OYSOWA) held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Governor Ambode said women are endowed with God-given abilities to get stronger no matter the circumstances and equally make positive difference in the lives of others even at their detriment.

The Governor, who attended the event alongside his wife, Mrs Bolanle Ambode, said the least to appreciate women is for efforts to be made to create space for them and fight for their rights.

According to Governor Ambode, "The least we can do to appreciate our women and reciprocate their resilience and sacrifice is to give them all the support they require to achieve their dreams.

"As a Governor, I am strongly committed and determined to create the space for our women and protect them against abuse and everything that will inhibit their progress.

"This is my commitment and I believe, it is the same for my other colleagues, including my brother, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State whose support for his darling wife has made this event a reality."

While describing the theme of the summit which is “The Resilient Woman: Making a Difference,” as apt, Governor Ambode said it confirmed the hidden strengths of women which keep them going even in the face of most difficult challenges.

He added: "It is this resilience that has made the woman the warmth and bond that keeps the family together.

"This is very graphically expressed in the words of Eleanor Roosevelt who said “a woman is like a tea bag – you cannot tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water”. Our women have shown that they are not only strong but resilient, hardworking, gentle, loving and beautiful.

"Over the years, the indispensability of women in governance has continued to be appreciated and recognized particularly in this part of the world. In Lagos, whenever I have the opportunity I always say this; if you want a job done well, give it to a woman. Women make the difference," Governor Ambode said.

Besides, Governor Ambode admonished women to positively deploy their skill set in any given position for the betterment of the country.

In their lectures, former Vice President of Zimbabwe, Dr Joice Musuru and former First Lady of Liberia, Senator Jewel Howard-Taylor, who were the keynote speakers, said African women must be inspired to do more even when the challenge appears insurmountable and also have the desire to make positive transformation.

They also advised women to be real, create their own stories, never give up and mentor the next generation of women leaders.

In their goodwill messages, Governors Rauf Aregbesola (Osun); Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa) and the host Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) all underscored the importance of women to nation building, saying any society or organization that position women other than the frontline role is destined for failure.

They also called on women to revive the tradition of productivity and responsibility to the country in their children, saying such would bring about a better society, better nation and better people.

2017 Community Day Celebration: Lagos Takes Governance To Grassroot

The entire 20 Local Governments Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas of Lagos State will today come alive with the celebration of 2017 Community Day.

The state government through its Ministry of Local Government and Communities Affairs had earlier announced that this year's community day celebration will be decentralized to further enrich community participation in all the nooks and cranny of the State.

Hence, AgegePulse gathered that Agege LGA and Orile Agege LCDA are set to host members of the community at their respective secretariat to mingle and review progress made by government and other stakeholders in nurturing the networks of families and individuals with common interests.

Speaking at a press briefing recently, the Special Adviser to the Governor of the State on Community and Communications, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, disclosed the decentralisation is targeted at increasing communalism by the various communities in the state.

He however, commended the over 3,900 CDAs in the State for initiating various self-help projects and for complementing government’s efforts in their various localities. He said the Ministry of Local Government and Communities Affairs had compiled the various needs of communities in the State through a need assessment survey it conducted recently.

Bamigbetan said: “The monitoring, evaluation and feedback roles of CDAs in project initiation, execution and delivery, the visibility accorded the CDAs in the organisation of government programmes, the renewed guidelines to local governments emphasizing the consultation of, and partnership with community development associations as a code of governance of this administration and many more.”

Today's Celebration will be followed by the grand finale at Adeyemi Bero auditorium, the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, tomorrow.

Idowu London Shoemaker
It is hightime the popular cliché in Nigeria that “No Food For Lazy Man” was rewritten to suit the female folks as women are no longer taking the back seat role in the quest to provide family needs. Meet a female professional cobbler (Shoe maker), Idowu popularly known as Idowu the London Shoemaker. Idowu met one of AgegePulse Magazine's Correspondents at Majaro Street, Ajegunle, Agege where she revealed how she developed joy in a predominantly men's job.

Idowu the London Shoemaker is a household name to many residents of Agege most especially Orile Agege area. She is married with kids. But her marital status and gender are not enough to discourage from doing opposite gender's profession better than them.

She said she had tried her hands in so many trades to make ends meet but wouldn't achieve breakthrough in them. “I have learnt so many vocations ranging from fashion designing, hairdressing, trading and many more without success in any of them. Some people around had tried to lure me into illicit trades like prostitution because of my predicament but I always made them realised that my travail is just a phase that I will definitely overcome”, Idowu revealed.

Fortune smiled on Idowu when according to her, she received a divine call from God that she should venture into shoe shinning trade. “Since then, it has been a success story”.

On how her newly found endeavour has been putting food on her table, Idowu narrated that she makes an average of N1000 daily. Interestingly, she made over N2000 at the spot where AgegePulse had the brief chat with her through voluntary donations by people who were touched by her story.

Adebule advises students to keep abreast of global current affairs

AgegePulse Magazine

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Oluranti Adebule has called on pupils and students of public schools in the State to always arm themselves with information on happenings around the world as a way of deepening their knowledge and make informed decisions on issues that affect their development as individuals and group of people.

The Deputy Governor gave the advice at the finals of the Year 2017 Lagos State Government Current Affairs Quiz Competition, held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.
She explained that the State Government came up with the competition on current affairs because of the observation that there was a lapse in students’ performance in the area as revealed by their response to questions posed to them during the Science, Arts and Craft Exhibition and Talent Hunt organised as part of the activities marking the Eko@50 celebrations.

According to her, the world is now a global village and there is the need to keep abreast of happenings all around the world to guide the people in taking an informed decision on issues bordering on development.
“We stand to learn from scientific, technological, social, economic and political developments the world over, this will surely influence how we make decisions and respond to issues as they affect us as individuals and group of people” Adebule stated.

The Deputy Governor expressed delight at the level of improvement exhibited by the students, expressing the hope that the competition would create healthy rivalry to ultimately develop the standards of education among participants in the competition.

“There is no gainsaying that , Lagos State Quiz and Debate competitions have over the years produced many very brilliant students who have gone ahead to study their courses of choice in various institutions of higher learning both at home and abroad and I am positive that this brand of the competition will further help our students to learn fast and be abreast of the happenings around them,’’ she said.

While reassuring the public of the State government’s commitment to the implementation of sustainable educational policies, Adebule disclosed that 18 libraries in public schools have been renovated and upgraded to provide unlimited access to digital content on the online portal.

In a keenly contested quiz competition, Isaiah Joseph and Olaniyi Ibukun from Ansar –UD -Deen Senior High School, Falolu, Surulere emerged overall best winners in the Senior schools' category, while Lagos State Model College, Kankon came second.

Similarly, in the Junior Schools category, Adedokun Salamat and Adedokun Abdullah from Lagos State Junior Model College, Igbo Nla came first to defeat Elegbede Mustakim and Sholuade Adebayo of Aje Comprehensive Junior School, Sabo, Yaba.

In the Primary School category of the competition, Ireti Primary School, Apapa represented by Ajisebutu Samson and Ndubusi Edith defeated their counterparts from Federal Housing Estate Primary School, Victoria Island with a slim margin of 18 to 16 points.

The winners were presented with gifts and trophies to encourage better performance in subsequent editions.

LASG intensifies efforts to ensure food safety for Lagosians

The Lagos State Government has established four main sub-committees for the implementation of activities on food safety in line with National guidelines and International best practices.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Primary Health Care, Dr. Olufemi Onanuga disclosed this in a keynote address at the maiden meeting of the State Food Safety and Hygiene Management Committee held recently.

Onanuga who listed the sub-committees to include Advocacy and Social Mobilization, Training and Capacity Building, Partnership and Resource Mobilization and Monitoring and Evaluation said that the committees are expected to develop operational activities in line with the National Policy on Food Safety and its Implementation Strategy as well as International best practices.

“I hope that the reports of activities of this committee will help to develop a very strong basis for an enviable implementation strategy that will be all-encompassing and achieve the result of ensuring safe food for all Lagosians,” he remarked.

The Special Adviser stated that the National Policy on Food Safety and its Implementation Strategy is a document that has been clearly developed along with its implementation framework by the Federal Ministry of Health in conjunction with Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
He said the Ministry of Health has embarked on various activities to strengthen its food safety programmes through active routine inspection of food handling/processing establishments and implementation of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP).

“HACCP is a systematic preventive approach to food safety from biological, chemical, and physical hazards in production processes. It designs measurements to reduce these risks to a safe level by putting in place stringent actions and strictly monitoring and controlling each process,” he remarked.
The Special Adviser observed that there has been a tremendous growth in inspection coverage of the food handling industry in the State as a total of 1,651 inspections were carried out in 2016 representing 63% coverage against 55% coverage recorded in 2015.

While giving his assurances that the level of coverage in 2017 has increased, he noted that food establishments in Lagos State have already embraced the implementation of HACCP and all its pre-requisite programmes with a view to assuring safe food for all Lagosians at all levels.

Lagos to shut down Oba Akran Avenue Ikeja for carnival

Olamide, Lil Kesh, Small Doctor, Queen Salawa Abeni, Malaika and Tope Sax amongst others to entertain guests

AgegePulse Magazine

The Lagos State Government on Sunday said plans have been concluded to stage this year's edition of the Lagos Street Carnival scheduled to hold on December 3 along Oba Akran Avenue in Ikeja. The Special Adviser to the State Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Adebimpe Akinsola, in an interview with newsmen, said the venue of the carnival would be shut down but adequate preparations have been made for alternative routes to mitigate the impact of the road closure on motorists and residents.Dubbed, “Lagos Street Party’’ in its maiden edition last year, the event has grown into a carnival to mark the start of the end of the year activities, celebrate the multi-cultural nature of Lagosians and reposition the State as a formidable cultural destination.

Speaking on security arrangements already put in place, Akinsola said, "We like to assure Lagosians and visitors that efforts are in place to ensure that the venue and environs are safe and incident-free”.“We expect more visitors this year and a lot more will be coming.

In terms of security and crowd control, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture is not working alone. We are working with the police, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Fire service, LASAMBUS and the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA). All of them are onboard and people are not going to see Oba Akran on Monday in a dirty state,” Akinsola said.

She expressed optimism that the event will witness an overflow of people of diverse cultures from all over the State engaged in merrymaking to usher in the Yuletide season.

"That was how it was done on the Island and this year we are bringing it to the mainland and of course next year, we would be looking at another location because the aim of government is to take this carnival all around Lagos,” she added.

She reiterated that through project T.H.E.S.E which stands for Tourism, Hospitality, Entertainment and Arts and Sports to achieve Excellence, the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode is committed to repositioning

the State and ensure excellence in the true sense of the word. While urging everyone to participate and enjoy the entertaining activities lined up for the carnival, the Special Adviser said: "the carnival is not only just for adults alone, the children will have their own corner where they can have fun.”  The carnival which has a line-up of artists including Olamide, Lil Kesh, Queen Salawa Abeni, Malaika and Tope Sax amongst others will start from noon until midnight on Sunday.

Ambode boasts of two years achievements without increasing taxes

AgegePulse magazine

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode said that his administration would take necessary steps to eliminate any incidence of multiple taxation in the State, especially at the local government level.

The Governor, said the tax system in the State must be presented in such a way that would be clear to all and sundry.

He, therefore, tasked Professor Sanni to use his tenure in office to address issues relating to multiple taxation, noting that his administration was able to achieve the level of infrastructural development in the last two years without necessarily increasing taxes.

“You know the citizens believe strongly that the way and manner we structure our tax system is done in such instance that we are doing multiple taxation within the local government and the State. That’s one aspect that we think that we can create some kind of partnership to be able to say that in no distance future that nothing exists in Lagos that relates to multiple taxation. I would like that aspect to be something of interest in the course of your research.

“In the last two years, we have seen the level of infrastructural development that we have put in place without necessarily increasing the taxes or levying citizens to pay more taxes. You have seen development taking place in the midst of recession.

“The only way to sustain this growth will be coming from the aspect of how we can sustain the revenue model that Lagos State can use to drive this growth and development in the State”, Governor Ambode said.

The Governor also said that there was a need to grow the financial template of the State.

Lagos could take to secure the next 50 years.

Sustain selfless service to humanity, Ambode tasks religious bodies

...Religious leaders are significant in the development of the State - Gov. Ambode
...Your policies positively touching lives, PFN tells Gov

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday commended religious leaders for upholding religious tolerance in the State and complementing government efforts in offering essential services to the people in critical areas such free medical care, provision of shelter and assistance to the needy.

Governor Ambode, who said this at Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja when he received the leadership of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) led by its President, Dr Felix Omobude on a courtesy visit, said it was on record that in the last two and half years of his administration, there had never been any major religious or ethnic crisis, while religious bodies have also been complementing government, just as he urged them to sustain the selfless service they have been offering to humanity.

He said: “I want to thank you on behalf of our administration. In another two days, our administration will be two and half years and it has been two and half years of sincere religious tolerance in this State. It has never been like this before; we have never had any disagreement between or among the religious groups or even among our people on a tribal note and that also show that God is present in Lagos State.

“Religious leaders are significant in the development of the State and I can say it easily. There are too many things that even our policies do not cover and a strong part of the civil society is our religious bodies because in areas where we cannot give shelter, we cannot give advice and we cannot give comfort, you have always been there.

“There are so many things that the churches are doing that are beyond spiritual. There are churches that are feeding people; they are taking care of health of the people; they are taking care of maternal mortality issues, taking delivery of babies where there are no hospitals and thereby complementing the efforts of government. That in itself deserves to be commended and I must say a big thank you to all our religious bodies. I must also inspire you on. What you are doing is not going unnoticed.
I take note of everything that our churches are doing and I commend you most sincerely from the bottom of our hearts.”

He said as a sign of celebrating and appreciating the religious tolerance in the State, the State Government would uphold and sustain the interfaith parley which started last year, saying this year’s edition will hold in coming weeks.

Besides, Governor Ambode said the modest achievements of his administration were a product of the discipline learnt from religious fellowship, and assured that no stone would be left unturned to make life comfortable for residents.

“We like to touch humanity which is the whole essence of governance and that is why we are here. We will continue to do it. The electorate decided that somebody should come and represent and take care of their interest and that interest we are ready to sustain, we are ready to uphold; it is more about them not about us and I think at the end of the day, this kind of visit gives me inspiration that we are doing it in the right way and I want to assure that we will continue to work for the interest of the people,” he said.

Earlier, Omobude said they were at Lagos House to deepen the relationship existing with government and to identify with Governor Ambode.

He said the PFN leadership is thrilled by what God had been using Governor Ambode to do in the State, saying the massive infrastructural renewal and various policies were having positive impact on the people.

He said the church must not only criticize government officials when they do wrong, but also commend them when they are working in the interest of the people, adding that of a truth, the giant strides of the State Government deserved to be commended.
He also assured that PFN would continue to partner with government at various levels especially on matters relating to development of the country.

Shun Cultism, Drug Abuse, Truancy - Hon. Egunjobi Advises Youths

In a bid to nip the prevalence of youths involvement in all forms of social vices in the bud, the Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, Hon. Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi has advised youths in Agege and Lagos State to eschew the act of drug abuse, cultism and all forms of social vices.

Egunjobi stated this at the National Campaign on cultism for Secondary School students across Agege LGA which was organised by Agege Local Government in collaboration with Lagos State Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs.

He recalled that youth empowerment was a major agenda on his manifesto during the chairmanship electioneering process adding that his administration is working tirelessly towards eradicating the nefarious social menaces such as drug abuse and cultism prevalent among Agege youths.

The youthful council boss reiterated that efforts are being put in place to engage the youths in various vocational trainings such as Computer Training, Cosmetology, Hairdressing, Catering/Hotel Management, Computer Engineering, Bead Making which would help students/youths to become useful to themselves and the society at large.

“Our administration will organize sensitization campaign and workshop, purposely to let the youth be aware of the dangers in being a secret cult member, its negative effects on them as a person and on the society at large.” Egunjobi asserted.

The Council Medical Officer of Health, MOH, Dr. Akintayo who advised the students to desist from consuming hard substances such as narcotics, cultism, and other illegal activities, said the social vices can truncate the brighter future that God has created for them.

Speaking with Agege Pulse Magazine, DPO, Isokoko Police Division, SP Ayuba NAS, he said crime rate in Agege has drastically reduced to nothing as a result of the monthly security meeting with other Security Agencies and  stakeholders.

He added that the police division is partnering with the youth in order to gather intelligence on how to checkmate the excesses of the evil perpetrators among the youths.

Head of Administration LGA, Engr. Abass, HoD WAPA, Mrs. Odetola, Mr. Ali Ahmed, NDLEA Commandant among other notable dignitaries were all present.
