LASG Set To Proffer Lasting Solution To Incessant Flooding on Akilo Road, Agege
Lagos State Government has embarked on clearing of silts and reconstruction of drainages at Akilo Road, Agege to tackle incessant flooding ravaging the area.
Over the years, residents and commuters along popular Akilo Road, Agege are often thrown into distress due to constant flooding whenever it rains.
Moreover, there has been several efforts on the part of the community to address the cause of the flooding but the unruly dumping of wastes into gutter from different parts of Ogba Ijaye and Agege has continued to block drainages on Akilo Road.
However, the state government in its efforts to ensure a flood free state swiftly responded to complaints of the residents as Lagos State Public Works Corporation have began the clearing of silts and reconstruction of drainages on the road.
The exercise which began last week is still in progress due to the length of Akilo road.
When Agegepulse visited the site, one of the LSPWC supervisors, Mr. Taiwo Akintokun explained that apart from clearing the silt, the agency will also dig the drainages deeper and wider adding that the drainages will be channelled to a bigger drainage on ACME Road for easy flow of water.

"This is a good riddance for Agege LG and Orile Agege LCDA. It is a call to serve and. It shows our ancient council is getting the deserved recognition we've been hoping for".
"I promise to do my utmost best within the limited time before proper election is conducted into various posts in the forum." Said Fayemi.

NNPC Crashes Price Of Petrol, Cooking Gas Nationwide
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has said that their sustained strategic intervention in the efficient supply and distribution petroleum products, has led to a significant reduction in the prices of premium motor spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), also known as cooking gas, nationwide.
Spokesman of the corporation, Ndu Ughamadu, in a statement on Sunday, said a national survey by oil and gas forum, NNPC’s weekly TV programme, indicated that in the last few weeks, the price of petrol has fallen steadily from N145 per litre to between N142 and N143 per litre in some stations across the country.
According to him, NNPC mega and affiliate stations across the country are selling for N143 per litre, while the pump price range is between N142 and N145 per litre in some major and independent marketers in Lagos, Abuja, Sokoto, Enugu, Delta and other major cities.
“One of the respondents in the survey and a manager at an independent fuel retail station in Abuja, Mohammed Abdullahi, said the station currently sells petrol at N142 per litre in line with the prevailing market situation in order to sustain the turnover of the business and to attract more motorists to the station,” the statement read.
“Another independent marketer in Mosimi, Emeka Ikechukwu, said the going ex-depot prices of PMS had dropped from N138 per litre in most depots to N133.28 in NNPC depots and between N130 and N131 per litre in private depots.
“However, the situation is slightly different in Aba and Umuahia in Abia State and Calabar in Cross River state where most independent fuel stations as well as major marketers selling the product at N145 per litre.
“The survey also showed a similar trend of drop in price for cooking gas with the average price for refilling 5kg cylinder at N2,215.96 from the former price of N2,500.00.
“The study further revealed that states with the lowest average price for the 5kg LPG refill were Kaduna and Niger at N2,000; Kogi at N2,005.00; and Oyo at N2,033.33.”
Ughamadu also said the prices of cooking gas have also reduced.
“At the NNPC Mega and retail stations nationwide, a 12.5kg of cooking gas that was sold for N4,500 a few months ago is now sold for N3,800 while other retail outlets sell the same quantity for N4,000,” he said.
“NNPC has sustained its interventions through sustained improvement in the supply of the products and remodeling of distribution channels to address sufficiency issues across the country.”

Eid -el- Kabir: Ambode urges Muslims to imbibe values of sacrifice, love, unity
AgegePulse Exclusive:
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday called on Muslims in Nigeria to imbibe the values of sacrifice, love and continue to foster unity as they join their counterparts worldwide to celebrate this year’s Eid-el-Kabir festival.
In his Sallah message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, Governor Ambode said the period of the celebration was a clarion call for Nigerians to imbibe the lessons of the season such as selfless service to God and humanity, sacrifice and sincere commitment to righteous conducts in their private and public life.
He explained that the significance of the season should be beyond the festivities, adding that as Muslims prepare to offer animal sacrifice in the prescribed days of the festival, the real essence was not in the meat or the blood of the animal but to encourage piety, self-discipline and sacrifice.
Governor Ambode therefore called on all Nigerians to exhibit these values for the good of the country and shun any act capable of heating up the polity or causing distrust among various ethnic groups in the country.
“As we celebrate this auspicious occasion, let us renew our faith in our nation and implore the Almighty God to restore to us those values that place high premium on human life, love of neighbour and sharing even as we ventilate our faith in the unity of our dear country”, the Governor said.
“This period requires more patience, fortitude, tolerance, endurance, patriotism and a greater willingness to make personal sacrifices for the good of all,” he said.
The Governor also thanked Lagosians for supporting his administration, assuring that the Government would continue to do its best to serve the people and promote fairness and mutual tolerance among the populace, irrespective of backgrounds.
While wishing all Lagosians, especially adherents of the Islamic faith a happy Eid-el-Kabir celebration, Governor Ambode enjoined Nigerians in other parts of the country to continue to be their brothers’ keeper.

Governor Ambode, who made the reamrks while speaking to journalists at the end of the Seamaster ITTF Challenge Nigeria Open held at the Molade Okoya Thomas Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, tagged Lagos 2017, said government and all the necessary stakeholders must now invest more in sports to take the country to its rightful place in the world of sports.
He expressed excitement at the successful hosting of the tournament which attracted Table Tennis stars from 22 countries, saying that the development was gratifying and in line with his vision to use sports as a catalyst for growth and development of the economy.
He said: “We are very happy to have hosted this competition. This is the fourth edition and you can see that this year's competition has actually attracted more people and then more countries. The idea is to use sports as a catalyst for the growth and development of the economy.
“It is also a catalyst for tourism and it is my strong believe that we must continue to support sports as a means of allowing us to develop the mental capabilities of younger ones and Lagos State is ready to do that.”
When asked whether he was disappointed that no Nigerian qualified for the finals of the competition, Governor Ambode said on the contrary, he was not disappointed but that the development called for greater investment in sports in the country.
“I am not disappointed at all about that. It’s called Nigerian open and so it’s open to everybody and again we had Nigerians in the semifinal. So, we need to do more work and then more coaching and also develop sports. Government has to support sports thoroughly if you want to see Nigerians in the finals.
“I mean you can see the level of skill-set that the Egyptians displayed here and if we say we are giant of Africa, we have to prove it in all ramifications. So, my believe is that government has to spend more time and money in developing sports in this country,” Governor Ambode said.
Speaking on plans for the competition next year, the Governor promised to increase the price money and also the number of participating countries, saying that as the destination for sports in Africa, Lagos must lead the way in promoting sporting tournaments.
“For me, I am going to scale up the price money to attract more people to come for this competition. So next year, you will see more price money and then more countries participating in the competition. Lagos is the destination for sports in Africa and that is the only way we have to go,” the Governor said.
The overall winner of the competition, Assar Omar from Egypt, went home with $5,000, while the first runner up,Gandhi Sarthak from India went home with $2,300.

Lagos Parleys Investors on Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI)
CLI is designed to harness the great potentials and economic capacity of Lagos.
To ensure the success of the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI) as an extensive and sustainable waste management system, the Lagos State Government has sought partnership with the private sector.
The Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, while speaking at the Cleaner Lagos Initiative investors’ roundtable in Victoria Island on Thursday, maintained that the partnership had become necessary for people to become more responsive and protective in respect of issues relating to their environment.
Adejare said CLI had been designed to harness the great potentials and economic capacity of Lagos by creating an enabling environment for non-governmental agencies, the private sector and the government to harness international best practices in the vital area of infrastructure.
The Commissioner stressed that both the public and private sectors can work together to achieve a common good.
His words, “Today’s roundtable is just one example of the way in which the public and private sectors can work together effectively for a common good. It is expected that working together, we can begin to shift the attitude of the people to be more responsive/protective of their environment through stringent legislation, enlightenment campaigns and strict enforcement.”
Adejare told the investors that for the initiative to succeed there was the need to have a sustainable long-term funding at both the State and Local Government levels to support the efforts needed to reach the State’s goals, stressing that meeting these goals was critical to ensure continued process, development and economic growth.
While maintaining that government had budgetary constraints to fund its activities, the Commissioner informed that, “budgetary constraints and an acknowledgement of private sector efficiencies and know-how were two principal reasons why this administration had taken the economic and political decision to accelerate the use of private sector finance and adopt a Public Private Partnership model in order to deliver solid waste management infrastructure”.
He said that to fund these reforms as a whole, the government had come up with is the Public Utility Levy (PUL) which is a subsidized property-based charge designed to pay for these and other environmental interventions.
“The PUL will be a major contribution to the State’s ongoing efforts to address severe challenges that are unique to Lagos as a result of rising urbanization,” he said.
He maintained further that the money would not be paid into government accounts but would be held in the Environmental Trust Fund (ETF) and managed meticulously by an independent Board of Trustees.
The Commissioner reaffirmed confidence in the competence and capacity of the concessionaires to transform the landscape through the provision of the Transfer Loading Stations, Waste Depots and the provision of Engineered Sanitary Landfills, as well track-able waste bins and over 500 compactors of varying sizes and capacity.

Symptoms and How To Prevent Lassa Fever-
Lassa fever is one of the types of haemorrhagic
fevers that affects human beings and could lead to sudden death.
When caring for patients with Lassa fever, further transmission of the disease through person-to-person contact or nosocomial routes can be avoided by taking preventive precautions against contact with patient secretion (called VHF isolation precautions or barrier nursing methods).
Some of the symptoms of haemorrhagic fever are high fever, serious headache and bleeding from the pores of the body parts which are all characterised by high fatality.
1. Medical presentation and symptoms
These include: High fever; serious headache; pains in the chest region; dry and sore throat; continuous stooling and vomiting; in severe situations, there is bleeding from the mouth, nose and vagina and then death results in later stages.
2. Preventing the disease or transmission
(Mastomys) Rodents and rats are the main vector of the disease. Someone can also be infected from the fluid or blood of an infected person and by shaking hands with people who are seriously infected.
3. Other preventive measures
People should ensure their food is properly covered, either cooked or uncooked. Liquid soap and antiseptics should be used to wash the hands. Also, other rules of regular hand-washing should be adhered to always. Rodenticides should be used to kill rats, while the bush around the home should be cleared regularly. The windows and doors of the house should be closed especially when it is night time.
4. Any body who shows the given symptoms above should report to the hospital immediately in order to prevent people not infected from coming up with the disease.
5. Medical personnel should wear protective clothing, such as masks, gloves, gowns, and goggles; using infection control measures, such as complete equipment sterilization.
